Mystery Warpstalker

Black Warp StalkerSpeaking of belated news, a hunter named Zuty sent me this picture of a warpstalker some months ago. He’d run across it and wanted to know where he could tame one.

But so far as I know, this particular warpstalker appearance cannot be tamed. So does anyone know where this handsome fellow came from?

Blatantly photoshopped. Look at the blood elf’s hand, it is infront of the nameplate, this does not occur ingame. Also there is somthing funny about the tooltip and the pets nameplate, ingame it is over the pets midsection, not its head.

  2. JayCanuck - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:21 am EDT

    I think it’s the Skettis summoned mini-boss/mob.

I believe the only reason it isn’t currently tamable is that it’s lvl 72. With WotLK, that restriction would be gone

  3. JayCanuck - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:23 am EDT

Update: I missed that the beast lore tooltip showed it as lvl 70. That picture is either photoshopped or taken from a private server, plain and simple.

  4. Snowstrider - August 6th, 2008 @ 2:56 am EDT

Yeah, it looks like it was photoshopped, the Warp Stalker beast lore tooltip has a border around it showing a completely different area (looks like there’s a skeleton in the bottom middle of the screen it was taken from)

  5. Mania - August 6th, 2008 @ 3:03 am EDT

Obviously it’s a compiled picture that places the Beast Lore information on a nicely posed screenshot. That doesn’t mean much one way or the other. But posting these sometimes turns up info I didn’t know about before, so it’s worth asking if anyone knows anything about it.

  6. marzix - August 6th, 2008 @ 3:35 am EDT

on a side note: i wish they still had the blood red warpstalker that were in the flying mount only areas in where ogrila was eventually placed. too bad they were 71-72 at the time or id of definitely gotten one of those.

  7. Shrezt - August 6th, 2008 @ 3:51 am EDT

Actually, JayCanuck was correct in his first assumption.

It’s being reported as tameable, only ineligible due to level difference as of Burning Crusade.

The only issue attempting to tame in WotLK beta is collecting the Time-Lost Scrolls. I am not however 100% sure if you require the quest (or completion of it) to summon her specifically.

  8. Zulmoka - August 6th, 2008 @ 4:18 am EDT

Note also, on top of all the other evidence brought up so far, that it’s diet consists of meat. Warpstalkers don’t eat meat :P

  9. Awlbiste - August 6th, 2008 @ 4:51 am EDT

The skin is definitely that of Gezzarak the Huntress ( http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=23163#screenshots:id=57988 ), however whether that screenshot is real or not I personally can’t say.

  10. Maree - August 6th, 2008 @ 5:06 am EDT

Not real. And Gezzerak is lvl 72.
But maybe we’ll be able to tame her in Wotlk.
Have anyone tried to Beast Lore her? Does it say ‘tameable’ ?

  11. Maree - August 6th, 2008 @ 5:07 am EDT

Nevermind, Shrezt already answered that >.>

  12. Darknez - August 6th, 2008 @ 5:51 am EDT

So.. has any one thats in the WotLK beta tried to tame it, or used beast lore to see if it remains tameable?

  13. Keilden - August 6th, 2008 @ 6:34 am EDT

So what other beasts are tameable but to high level? To the BeastLoreMobile!

  14. Kavu - August 6th, 2008 @ 6:56 am EDT

Warpstalkers in fact eat fish and fruits, don’t they?
this one’s tooltip shows “diet: meat”
    fake!

  15. Darknez - August 6th, 2008 @ 7:04 am EDT

    A filter on WoWhead.
    http://www.wowhead.com/?npcs=1&filter=minle=71

Shows anything thats level 71 onwards (some are in ranges between 68-72 etc so ignore those!)

  16. Nimizar - August 6th, 2008 @ 7:31 am EDT

On an utterly off-topic note, I finally got around to taming myself a devilsaur (Tyrantus in Netherstorm) on the beta server. I renamed him Bandwagon :)

  17. Darknez - August 6th, 2008 @ 7:33 am EDT

    Grats to you Nimizar ;)
I thought MrT would be more apt :D especially if it could have a mohawk.

  18. Keilden - August 6th, 2008 @ 7:35 am EDT

Some of the creatures om the wowhead link are untameable for other reasons. So we need some kind of maniac that is in the beta that can check around.

  19. Darknez - August 6th, 2008 @ 8:44 am EDT

You’ll have to have a Mania and not a maniac in that case… ;)
My invite obviously got lost in the ether!

  20. Seidouyumi - August 6th, 2008 @ 9:11 am EDT

Ok, this is definately photoshopped. The Blood Elf has been cut into the shot and stands out distinctly. Also, the tooltip is overtop something else. Lastly, the mouth is too pink to the the only Warpstalker with this skin. Nice creation though.

  21. Fearmdemon - August 6th, 2008 @ 9:40 am EDT

i call bull on that screenshot…theres a few things wrong with it…
    1) the name is offset
    2) the Beast Lore is taken with a skeleton in background, maybe Terrokar by the colors
    3)Warpstalkers dont eat meat lol

  22. Corbetti - August 6th, 2008 @ 10:06 am EDT

[Off topic] I wish the thripp (thunderbug) that has invaded my monitor was tameable…

    `

Anyone care to adopt it? Or at least come up with a name for it?

  23. ManiacFive - August 6th, 2008 @ 11:37 am EDT

    @Corbetti

Man your comment made me laugh, I have one dead and one alive thunderbug trapped in my monitor at the moment. If i line up the comment just right with the dead one Its like a family. I have named them as such…

    Bastards

  24. Scott - August 6th, 2008 @ 12:21 pm EDT

Photoshop - I could go with the idea that maybe they just stuck in the tooltip to try and show additional info on the pet, except that 1) the pet’s name is waaay off center as fearmdemon pointed out, and 2) there is no way something classified as a warpstalker is going to show a diet of “meat” (again as others have noted).

It looks like the guy may have gotten a guildie to take two screen shots of the same spot (from same camera angle); one with Gezzarak in it, and one with Schlauch standing there with his (white or green) warpstalker, probably after the fight, then just do a simple copy/paste to overlay the screen section with Gezzie over the space containing his pet. Unfortunately the faker misremembered the mob’s position by a few feet and so you get this kind of clumsy mockup.

The tooltip meanwhile was taken at some other time and so it couldn’t be added as cleanly - and again the fact that the tooltip itself had been tampered with either means the poster was intentionally leaving an obvious giveaway or was smoking something at the time… :)

  25. Mania - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:08 pm EDT

I’m trying to remember if warp stalkers ate meat when they were first introduced in the Burning Crusade beta. Does anyone remember?

Keilden: “To the BeastLoreMobile!” Haha! I love it. :>

Darknez: Thanks for the Wowhead filter, but … I think Petopia’s filter might actually be more useful in this case.

    Nimizar: Awww .. cute!

  26. Rikaku - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:45 pm EDT

    Mania:
No, Warpstalkers did not eat meat. They ate Fruit. I remember that distinctly because I’ve travelled with a wolf and cat all my levelin’ times, and had bagfuls of it. But then when I tamed a Warpstalker, I had to go searchin’ high and low for a fruit vendor XD

  27. Kurdor - August 6th, 2008 @ 2:55 pm EDT

I can’t believe no one thought of this hunter just replacing the skin files of one warpstalker with another. To me, that’s probably what’s going on here. It’d allow a legit screenshot, at level 70, with minimal photoshop.

  28. Shrezt - August 6th, 2008 @ 3:08 pm EDT

How many would consider this “faked” I wonder?

    And here’s the reference.

  29. Alyrria - August 6th, 2008 @ 4:26 pm EDT

Well, Shrezt, there’s a difference between bugs showing up in beta and obviously Photoshopped screenshots. :P

  30. Darknez - August 6th, 2008 @ 4:41 pm EDT

    Sorry Mania :(
I think I was getting overly excited because there are more results on a WoWHead scan… but doesn’t mean any of them were tameable.
However I was also hoping that additional mobs that were not tameable before are now indeed tameable but I need some lacky thats in the beta to find that out for me. :)

Plus I didn’t know the facility existed on petopia even though its my browser homepage!
    I am in your mercy…

  31. Dulin - August 6th, 2008 @ 4:41 pm EDT

    Scott @ 24:

Nope, it’s a total composite. Gezz was never at that location, because that location is in Shadowmoon. Skettis doesn’t have roads.

  32. Scott - August 6th, 2008 @ 4:43 pm EDT

    @Kurdor:

You’re right that swapping skins would allow a legit looking screenshot to be taken, but I think the reason no one mentioned that previously is because this is not a legit looking screenshot.

  33. Ceron - August 6th, 2008 @ 5:11 pm EDT

    @ Shrezt

I’m more of a paint shop pro type of person so if I did get the notion to pull 1 of these stunts, it would be done in a horribly obvious fashion. :-P

That screenie you posted is directly from the Wrath Beta client.

Mania check your email! New Tamable pet!

  34. Chris - August 6th, 2008 @ 5:39 pm EDT

At one time there were some red ones up in Bladespire…level 71 or so. Got pulled I suppose when they put in those dailies up there.

  35. Ceron - August 6th, 2008 @ 6:09 pm EDT

Here’s an authentic pic of said Warpstalker in the fake photo posted above.

    http://i38.tinypic.com/9av0jd.jpg

Yes it is tamable(as of the current beta patch). As you can see, he hits like a truck. That crit wasn’t even from the reduced armor from Tame Beast. I was just trying to get a beast lore screenshot and possibly tame. I’ll come grab him after raid time.

  36. Ansawa - August 6th, 2008 @ 9:51 pm EDT

OMG, Gezzarak will be tameable? *_* DO WANT.

But yeah, screenshot looks v. fake.

Also, I know for certain that the sporebats (not the toxic ones, the Serpentshrine Spore Bats - level 72) in SSC are tameable, Thrall’s summoned ghost Dire Wolves (72) are tameable, and the Phoenix-Hawks (72) in TK are tameable.

That is, they’re flagged Tameable in Beast Lore. The Dire Wolves are friendly to players of either faction, so I doubt they could be tamed.

I do habitually use Beast Lore on any beast-type mob of a tameable family when I’m raiding. ;) So if we want to make such a list, I can provide information.

  37. hyena84 - August 6th, 2008 @ 10:59 pm EDT

i wonder if anyone has checked to see if the “mark of shame” bebuff from that one quest would let you tame one of thrall’s wolves?

  38. Selesti - August 6th, 2008 @ 11:49 pm EDT

I’d love it if Gezzarak became tamable. Purple is my favorite color. :D Otherwise, I’m very happy with my new green warp stalker, Midori.

As for the photo, this is an obvious shop. The arm position being the biggest give away to me.

  39. Zoblek - August 7th, 2008 @ 8:46 am EDT

If Gezzarak the Huntress (http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=23163), maybe Phase-Hunter
(http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=20906 ), in Arcratraz tamable, too?

  40. Zuty - August 7th, 2008 @ 11:17 am EDT

Wow, lots of comments on this. I was wondering when Mania would put this up :P
Any way, I found this picture online some time ago during TBC but before WotLK beta (Might have been around Alpha, IDK when that started). I had two pictures, one of the pet and hunter and the other of the tooltip. I used MSPaint (not PS) to cut and copy the tooltip into.
Also, I am not a Hunter (70 Troll Shaman), but my GF plays one and when she saw this she got excited about it and wanted to know where it is from.

I just wanted some info. I know my computer had other pictures of that same hunter with different skinned pets, I will need to see if I can find them and send them in. Remember, I did not take these pictures I just found them.

  41. batgrl - August 7th, 2008 @ 11:32 am EDT

Actually even with it being a photoshopp’d shot it’s still been a great conversation in here Zuty! I think a bunch of folk now have this on their To Tame list once we can level up higher than 70 in the expansion. I vaguely remember this beast, but only as something I gave a lot of space to when I was questing in that area on my squishy priest - now I want to go back over there and sightsee a bit.

Also - I love the name Bandwagon for a devilsaur!

  42. thepalelady - August 7th, 2008 @ 12:39 pm EDT

idk were it comes from but it looks cool !!!

  43. Zuty - August 7th, 2008 @ 10:31 pm EDT

Looks like it can be tamed, great news for me and my GF!
Happy hunting and lets hope it stays that way at launch.

    ~Zuty
