Name That Pet: Iggletron’s Soulflayer

Iggletron & Wind SerpentToday’s Name That Pet request comes to us from Iggletron from Dragonmaw. Iggletron writes:

This is my level 66 hunter alt on Dragonmaw, whom I’ve been enjoying very much (I’m a complete petaholic!). This hunter will soon be renamed Iggletron, a name I’ve used in the past, which I think reflects my goofy side. I don’t RP, and my character does not have much of a back story. I myself am a pretty laid back player overall, but prone to both moodiness and humor, if that helps at all ;b

I’ve tried windserpents before, and liked them, but the ones I had picked just weren’t the right fit. The Soulflayer in ZG was the model I had my eye on (in addition to greatly preferring Azeroth windserpents to the Outlands variety, I thought this serpent had the most beautiful skin overall), but I didn’t get around to taming him until level 65.

This guy was a difficult tame. I worked hard to tame a Soulflayer, only to give it a name that just didn’t fit, and had to abandon him and tame another. I’ve gotten this one up to level 64 and loyalty 6, and am anxious to name him! I’ve been through a thousand pets, and the type of names I pick are all across the board. My current pets are a ZG raptor named Muldoon (Jurassic Park reference) and a ZG serpent named Zulara. This guy finishes out my ZG trifecta, and is a pet I’m hoping to have for a very long time.

I’m extremely picky about names, but since I’m at a loss as to what to name this pet, I figured all of the commenters on this site could help :) Names I’m NOT looking for are names that have direct references to lightning, storms, thunder, electricity, flying, wind, air, the color blue, etc. I know that eliminates a lot of names that might first come to mind for a wind serpent, but I’m definitely in search of a name that is not cliche, and a name which matches the grace and dignity of this pet. :)

I REALLY don’t like Japanese/Anime pet names! :b However, I really like German/Russian/Scandinavian type names.

I am leaning more towards a male name, but feel free to include female names as well. I hope you can help, and I thank you in advance! :D

We’ll see what we can do!

    How about Rodelschlitten!
It’s the German word for toboggan! :P

Or maybe Schwierig which is like tough or with difficulty.

    I have a white windserpant

named him Spurm. Wouldn’t let you put sperm :(

For your pet I think a great German sounding name would be “Kaiserlich”

Kaiserlich means Imperial In German, conforming with the grace and dignity you were looking for…… and even sounds a little “electric”, even if you are not leaning in that direction : )

    Good luck with choosing.

Hehe, I’m awfully picky with pet names too!

I just looked up the “Snakes on a Plane” wikipedia article for some random inspiration… and it turns out that the study of snakes is called “Ophiology” (from the Greek ophis, meaning snake).

So maybe “Ophis”, “Ophios” or “Ophio”? :D

Or also from that article: “Venin” (venom in French).

    Zmey…
A Russian word for dragon, although I know Wind Serpents aren’t dragons, seeing as they’re my favorite family. But most people call them dragons all the same =P

Windschlange also works, apparently a direct german translation of Wind Serpent

How do you feel about Aztec-inspired names? The winged serpent concept comes (via D&D) from the Aztec winged serpent god, Quetzalcoatl. I’m not saying you should definitely name yours that (probably not very original, but definitely very long), but pick an Aztec word or a combination of letters that have a lot of “tl”s in them, throw in some Xs, Qs and Cs for good measure and you have something pretty original :)

Demyan – a Russian name that means “true friend” :)

I just wanted to say grats on the awesome Windserpent, I have that same one too! I named him Eltanin after the brighest star in the constellation Draco =) I find “celestial” names like that to really work in tune with that pet, maybe you would too?

I have a dark blue wind serpent too.

I tamed mine all the way from wailing caverns, and I’ll admit this was lazy of me, but I called him dreadfang (after the Deviate Dreadfang that he was before I tamed him).

Just a warning, if you do call it dreadfang, expect everyone to shorten it to fang >.<

How bout Ragnir, Thurgin, Fjore, Sungard, Himlaeld, Mjolner, Hugin, Lojun or Eldaregn?

There all old Scandinavian names from pre-Viking history. I usually like these kinda names cause im Swedish and since i got a dwarf hunter, i like the viking inspiration.

    Consider it…

I know you said you aren’t interested in names that directly reference lightning, storms, etc., but I still thought I’d offer the name Tsorovan. It means “storm” in the Old Tongue language from the Wheel of Time book series. I doubt many people would recognize it as being from a book though, and it sounds pretty cool.

Here are some names I found that are of German or Scandinavian origin. I think they sound dignified and graceful.

    Male names:
Adelmo – Old German, noble protector
Ademaro – Old German, glorious in battle
Gunther – German, a bold warrior
    Hastings – German, swift one
Kasimir – German, the great destroyer
Ragnar – Scandinavian, a wise warrior
Vilhehn – Scandinavian, a strong and resolute protector

    Female names:
Luana – German, a graceful warrior maiden
Richelle – Old German, Old English, brave one
Zelinda – Old German, shield of victory

    I hope these help!

  14. Yog - August 5th, 2008 @ 1:39 am UTC

    I’d call him Mittens!

  15. Vap - August 5th, 2008 @ 1:54 am UTC

I always liked wind serpents. what really got me started on them was when i was roming around the barrens for my first time and saw this huge skull like cave. at the time i had no idea that it was an instance but I went inside anyways. i noticed right away that they where all elites and i was thinking what the hell is going on? then i saw a smaller serpent 5 lvls lower then the others (lv 11) and at the time i had no pet and just reached the lv of 11 so i started time the beast it was very close but i got him after a few trys. I saw that he came with a lightning attack and way back then i loved FF (final Fantasy) and named him Ramha it suited him perfectly i found over the coming lvls and being an elite he was stronger than the rest.

I know this story was long for just saying a name but w.e i wanted to say it lol

I hope this helps on finding a name for your pet.

I have the same pet and I named mine Tesla, after Nikola Tesla, the scientist who did a great deal of work with electricity. He was a man way before is time and inventor of many gadgets that we are still trying to understand today.

I can’t help but think that DonCornelius would be a good name. I just can’t help but think Soouuuulllll Flayer! when I see those serpents.

    Man, I’m showing my age.

  22. LIndalas - August 5th, 2008 @ 10:37 am UTC

I would go with Lindorm. It is true that it is a non-flying, usually sea-dwelling snake/dragon, but it is a great name of Scandinavian heritage. For more info and alternative spellings, check out wikipedia.

  23. irwinn - August 5th, 2008 @ 12:29 pm UTC

My Soulflayer’s name is Biscuit! :)

  24. Vajarra - August 5th, 2008 @ 12:59 pm UTC

I have a Raptor named “Vesper”, I like it because it reminds me of “viper” and it means an evening star.

  25. Kai - August 5th, 2008 @ 5:15 pm UTC

Windserpants are very good. I have a white one myself and I mjust say being a MM hunter, out of my three pets my Windserpan Raijin holds the best agro. I guess lightning breath just really makes mobs mad XD

  26. Shirubia - August 5th, 2008 @ 5:40 pm UTC

Well, my hunter twink doesnt has exactly the same pet, but close (She has the Deviate Dreadfang).

I named it ”Sapphiron Jr.”… was trying to get a silly name, but one that would also reflect its power (Since sapphiron was a bitch at 60, and it still is a 70!)

  27. Ajimad - August 5th, 2008 @ 11:31 pm UTC

    Blitzkrieg

  28. Blasterion - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:26 am UTC

    honestly with no irony Soulflayer

  29. Fireshade - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:45 am UTC

Barra meaning Shadow or Aphyon meaning death

  30. Keilden - August 6th, 2008 @ 1:53 am UTC

Or you could name it Solid Snake.

  31. Tashi - August 14th, 2008 @ 9:30 pm UTC

For some reason, Shadowsong came to mind…
    I also like Mittens <3

  32. Ghostlyarrow - August 25th, 2008 @ 11:00 am UTC

    Shadowglider
Facemelter (Soulflay similar to Mind Flay which is refered to as the SP facemelting… pretty farfetched, I know).
    On the idea of Hakkar:
    Deviate
    Insanity
    Bloodspiller
    Consumption
