One Single Chimera – Updated!

Classdragon & NuramocGhostcrawler just posted an interesting if somewhat frustrating teaser on the WotLK Beta Hunter forum:

I really hate to mention this, but there is currently a single chimera that is tamable and he might even be a rare spawn. I feel bad making you run all over the world trying to find him. Next patch there will be many more.

So off we go to search! First person to send me a screenshot of this bad boy as a pet gets a … well, gets their screenshot posted here.

[Update] Glassdragon found him! It’s Nuramoc, the rare level 70 chimera from Netherstorm. I’ve added the pic above — but be sure to click on the small version to see him in his full-sized glory! (Nuramoc, not Glassdragon, although he’s in there too.)

Chimeras are a Cunning pet (that is, they use the Cunning talent tree) and their family skill is Froststorm Breath. Like devilsaur skill, there only seems to be one rank so far:

Froststorm Breath (Rank 1): Your pet simultaneously breathes frost and lightning at an enemy target, inflicting Frost and Nature damage and slowing the target. (40 Focus, Instant, 30 yd range, 10 sec cooldown)

Wow — those two heads are really handy!

Ah, also, they eat meat.

Deidare: Did you not get my e-mail about that? I wondered why you hadn’t said anything, but if you didn’t get the e-mail then that would explain it. :>

  5. Maree - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:38 pm UTC

My bet is on The Razza!

  6. Wolfington - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:44 pm UTC

How ’bout that purple/silver one that sometimes rezzes in Netherstorm? He’s rare elite.

  7. Deidare - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:44 pm UTC

@Mania haha oh lol you sent me an e-mail well that would exsplain it im sorry my lab tops the one with the e-mail and i dont use it often so when i get to it ill read it.

  8. Darsh - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:46 pm UTC

According to Wowhead, there are two Chimera’s flagged rare. The Razza, as Maree mentioned who is a Rare Boss in the arena outside DM, and The Evalcharr, a rare in Ashzara. If its one thats already in game, its most likely The Evalcharr as I doubt a boss would ever be tameable.

  9. Darsh - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:50 pm UTC

Hm, on second thought, he said a single Chimera that he *thinks* may be rare. That implies to me that its a named/unique, but could possibly not be rare.

3 other possibilites come to mind.

Brumeran, a named Chimera in Winterspring that’s the objective of a horde quest
Chimaera Matriarch, I *believe* this is a unique mob, and only one will spawn at a time.
Lord Lakmaeran, a tough boss during the AQ questchain, but I doubt its him for the same reasoning as The Razza.

  10. Maree - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:52 pm UTC

Okay, I went Wowhead hunting, and found 3 rare chimeras.
    http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=20932 Nuramoc Wolfington mentioned,
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=11497#same-model-as The Razza I mentioned, and
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=8660#comments The Evelecharr (something like that)

    Happy hunting!

  11. Maree - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:53 pm UTC

Darsh beated me to list all the chimeras =P

  12. Hydra - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:53 pm UTC

Drash, you say bosses aren’t tameable, but Ghamoo-ra(from BFD) is tameable. So he’s worth a look.

  13. Mania - August 2nd, 2008 @ 3:56 pm UTC

*nods at Darsh* I was thinking the same thing about named/elites.

Unfortunately I’m not at all sure I can check the Razza. And the Evalcharr doesn’t seem to be up.

  14. Deidare - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:00 pm UTC

Man if you cant tame razza…. i mean look at him hes prettey cool but Ghostcrawler did say that they mite fix the stuff in a patch right so hey mabye he will be tamable

  15. warhammer - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:07 pm UTC

I’m in front of Evalcharr now and still not tameable.

  16. Mania - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:11 pm UTC

Glassdragon found it! It’s the outland rare in Netherstorm. Pictures incoming.

  17. Deidare - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:13 pm UTC

  21. Gazak - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:23 pm UTC

I don’t know if they’re listed elsewhere but I thought I’d mention a couple rare beasts we couldn’t tame before that I’ve come across:
    - Swiftmane, a zhevra in the Barrens
    - Ironeyes (or something), a basilisk in Shimmering Flats
    - Ooze, cool-looking yellow worm in Dustwallow
    - Hissperik (or something), a nice blue-and-black basilisk in the Desolace
    - Antilas, a hippogryph in Azshara
    - And, finally, I remember seeing a rare chimera in Azshara called The Evercharr or something like that. So get on that.

  22. Gazak - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:24 pm UTC

Oh, nevermind you found it. Nice!

  23. mugungo - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:25 pm UTC

let me re phrase my question a bit :P , what are the specifics of its family skill?

  24. Rutina - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:25 pm UTC

I’ve added the other info that Glassdragon sent me to the post (faimly skill and diet). I need to get this stuff up on Petopia now as well.

  29. Jeg - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:34 pm UTC

    Many Gratz Glassdragon!!!

  36. Farseer Lolotea - August 2nd, 2008 @ 7:01 pm UTC

I’ll be very happy when Wrath is finally out and I can work towards getting one of these guys for my hunter.  (Draenei + exotic pet = win.)

However, I think I’ll stick with one of the blue-and-white ones like the Evalcharr or a Chillwind.  Nuramoc’s unique purple coloring is nice, but the Outland chimera model is overall rather ugly.

  37. Stephf - August 2nd, 2008 @ 7:41 pm UTC

I really hope they make more Chimeras tameable, they look like a good pet

  38. Schadenfreude - August 2nd, 2008 @ 7:47 pm UTC

Ha! I thought it might be Nuramoc. I hate that guy.

  39. Concrete - August 2nd, 2008 @ 8:06 pm UTC

Nuramoc. Man he’s messed me up getting motes or mining nodes.
Hope we get better pet skins.

Sign, seems blizzards idea of “exotic” is plan jane mobs that are currently ingame and their only exoticness is that they’re normally untamable.
where is the totally new pets like the new wolfs?

  40. Forest - August 2nd, 2008 @ 8:09 pm UTC

*drool* :O it’s so cool! I wonder what other exotic pets there will be. Talbuk lol! XD (joke)

I think Basalisks will be an exotic pet, & have something like Crystal Gaze like the ones in STV, & maybe even Diemetradons! :O

  41. Glassdragon - August 2nd, 2008 @ 8:18 pm UTC

It is a cool pet, been having a lot of fun with it. Until now I have stayed away from the Cunning pets as I am usually only interested in raiding/dps pets.
The Froststorm Breath can hit incredibly hard, and has a pretty long range.

    @Concrete:
I am sure there will be. I am actually liking the Wooly Rhino models, it would prolly be a tanking pet, and it looks cool.
I just hope that there are 2-3 Exotic Pets per tree, giving hunters a bit of variety.

Thank god for more stable slots, cause mine are all reserved already. :)

  42. Palladiamors - August 2nd, 2008 @ 8:43 pm UTC

If I remember right, its already been stated that next build more chimeras will be made tameable. I think Numa was more of an easter egg for observant hunters. Further, and bad news for any non-beast masters, is that they will be implimenting the fifty one point beast master talent soon, so exotics will only be tameable by them. But for the moment I think they wanted testing for their first couple of exotic pets.

  43. Dweezill - August 2nd, 2008 @ 9:40 pm UTC

Yeah, the chimera loosk really cool, and he is deffinately powerful…it looks like he is too powerful to me. Yeah, I still like the old pets and the old pets look like they won;t be needed if the other “exotics” are as powerful. I kinda thought Blizzard would try to even the pets’ “usablity” a little bit with the expansion, but it looks like they are just making some families even more powerful. What’s the point in having more than a pet or two if the pet or two that you have are amazingly powerful. I realize that all pets are supposed to have their own uses some for PvP, some for PvE), but when something this powerful comes along, why do you really need to swap out. Ah well, I’ll just keep my spider and get my bum kicked. And I was really hoping fror an even playing field

  44. Selesti - August 2nd, 2008 @ 9:45 pm UTC

Ah chimeara’s, eh? I might just grab one of these babies. Get me all, or almost all flying pets. :D I really hope the birds that look like the tauren flight form become tamable…I’d love to have a matching pair of “druids”. I’m sure there will be new models available and not just old pets suddenly made tamable. I do agree that the white chimearas are probably the prettiest…and will probably be what I’m getting. I’m all ready leveling another hunter so I can tame more beasts.

  45. Gogey - August 2nd, 2008 @ 10:29 pm UTC

Glass, how much exactly does froststorm hit for? I like numbers :]

  46. Ceron - August 2nd, 2008 @ 11:40 pm UTC

Just tamed on the Northrend Beta Realm at 11:37pm EST. Good luck to those hunting him! Going to post pics soon.

  47. Rikaku - August 2nd, 2008 @ 11:46 pm UTC

Dweezil, the chimaeras look strong, but also keep in mind they’re probably going to be “Exotic” in the actual release. Exotic will be something more BM exclusive. Most people still won’t play with Chimaeras or Devilsaurs because again, it comes down to your playing style on which pet you choose. =)

  48. Glassdragon - August 2nd, 2008 @ 11:57 pm UTC

    @Gogey:

Some really nice crits, low 4k, but thats without Cornered or Feeding Frenzy active, so that could go 7k or more in theory. Normal regular crits are around 3k more or less.

  50. Palladiamors - August 2nd, 2008 @ 11:59 pm UTC

I think, as always, there will be a period of time right after Wrath releases when EVERYONE will have an exotic pet except for the hard core MM an Survival specced people. As the months roll on, you’ll see a decrease in the number of devilsaurs/chimeras/what have you, until it balances back out again. Thats the way it always goes. When felguard were introduced, you couldn’t so much as move in Stormwind without seeing seven.

  51. Ceron - August 2nd, 2008 @ 11:59 pm UTC

those are pics btw, sorry it said something about a spam filter when I posted. O_o.

  52. Palladiamors - August 3rd, 2008 @ 12:04 am UTC

And more on topic, ain’t no way frost storm will go live with that kind of damage, not being 40 focus, 10/7 second cooldown, and 30 yards. That is insane, but would be great.

  53. Seidouyumi - August 3rd, 2008 @ 12:20 am UTC

Chimerae look nice, but they’re not my cup of tea. Or Devilsaurs for that matter. I really want a moth though. I’m really hoping that they’ll make the low level blue ones tameable too.

  54. Ceron - August 3rd, 2008 @ 12:34 am UTC

Glasshunter, how in the world is your chimera doing that much damage?

  55. Ceron - August 3rd, 2008 @ 12:35 am UTC

    *Glassdragon

    Ugh I’m sleepy.

  56. Ryai - August 3rd, 2008 @ 12:49 am UTC

The only times I’ve ever seen Nuramoc was when he’s bugged. Three times. >.>

But I’m not really interested in that outlands model, or any of them tbh, what I can’t wait for is to tame a blue-white chimera, <3 them.

But first Devilsaurs and now Chimera’s.

And Wooly rhino? If they are tameable, awsome :D

  57. Kristy - August 3rd, 2008 @ 2:58 am UTC

Really love how much Epic damage they do. But I doubt I’m gonna get a Chimera. Devil saurs are more of what I like. Wooly Rhinos eh? Wow, surprised Mania hasn’t seen/posted about them yet!

  58. Ventix - August 3rd, 2008 @ 3:27 am UTC

I’ve just checked and Vilewing Chimera are still not tamable.

  61. Seidouyumi - August 3rd, 2008 @ 11:31 am UTC

    Kristy-

That’s because most of the wooly Rinos are, right now, Elekks. The Elekks and Kodos are being used as place holders for the larger beasts until their models are ready.

This is as of the last time I had heard anything, which was a bit ago, admittedly.

  62. The Wild One - August 3rd, 2008 @ 11:51 am UTC

I want to tame an Elekk.

    Trample Rank 1
    60 Focus 10 yd range
    Instant 30 sec cooldown
Your pet enrages, trampling all enemies within range.

  63. nobbie - August 3rd, 2008 @ 1:01 pm UTC

Did anyone manage to find and tame Numaroc on the European test server “Coldarra” already? I’ve patrolled his spawn locations a couple of hours now, but no chance. I’m also wondering if there are two different builds of the last patch, as the MMO-Champion talks of build 8719 while the EU build is 8714. Could it be that this single chimera doesn’t spawn in Europe atm?

Regarding the spawning of rares in general, do I need to farm other mobs in the known spots for a while until such a mob pops up, or does it spawn regardless if anything is getting killed in these areas? Thanks!

  64. loljen - August 3rd, 2008 @ 1:13 pm UTC

I myself have also been trying to find him on coldarra, i’ve been searching most the day, and killing every mob around where he reportedly spawns. So much that i dinged 74 ><. no luck yet though, and im very close to giving up. the only time i would suggest trying is after a server restart

  65. nobbie - August 3rd, 2008 @ 2:15 pm UTC

According to the popular WoW databases the respawn time of Numaroc shouldn’t be very long, though. Even if someone else tamed or killed it just a few minutes before you, it should be back within a couple of hours.

  66. Kristy - August 3rd, 2008 @ 3:48 pm UTC

    Sei, “place holders” eh? Okay…

  67. Nimizar - August 3rd, 2008 @ 6:58 pm UTC

Wooly rhinos showed up with at least first cut real models late last week (look more like clefthoofs than kodos). The elekk and oversized Peanut models running around Northrend are placeholders for mammoths.

  68. Demonshirubia - August 3rd, 2008 @ 7:12 pm UTC

    My, hello, new pvp pet.

  69. Zepnic - August 3rd, 2008 @ 8:06 pm UTC

    nobbie,

There was a blue post stating that the new build was going to be 8719, it was later edited and corrected to 8714. MMO-Champion probably didnt update thier news.

  70. Nissi - August 3rd, 2008 @ 8:26 pm UTC

    @Dweezil …

I really do hope that these pets are powerful. There really needs to be a reason for them. While I really have come to dislike the new pet talent trees for a similar reason to the whole “that pet is still better than this pet” thing, exotic pets need to have a reason for being the 51 point talent. The extra 5 points really are not worth it for anything more than survivability of the pet, which is just not worth the 5 points in my opinion.

If the pets are average, you will see a lot of 51/20/0 hunters running around with Chimera and Devilsaur for a while, then in about a month you will see more Raptors, Wind Serpents, Ravagers and Wolves running around again. If they are what they should be and get a health/armor/damage modifier and a decent (yet not overpowered) ability, then we will see a lot of them. That being said, you are going to see alot more Gorillas, Turtles, Bears and Crocodiles running around as well. Overall the pet changes are great, I just wish they’d rework the pet talent trees into less of a pigeon holed “one family” talent spec system.

  71. Deathbang - August 3rd, 2008 @ 8:59 pm UTC

Honestly I could see froststorm going live with that damage it hits about 2k average in the right conditions crits for 8k and slows? Completely OP BUT it can be RESISITED. Its a Frost/Nature spell which means with the right gear and a druid it will become completely useless. Insane damage? Yes. OP? A little, but the fact that it can be resisted lowers that. Thats one reason I never got into wind serpents, unreliable.

  72. zifero - August 3rd, 2008 @ 9:39 pm UTC

Well this is cool, but i wonder if Hydras are next, anyone think its a possibility?

  73. Palladiamors - August 3rd, 2008 @ 9:44 pm UTC

Hydras, basilisks, diemetradon, and pterodaxx’s all seem like possibilities, but we will have to sit back and see what happens.

  85. Deathbang - August 4th, 2008 @ 12:37 pm UTC

I like the devilsaur ability better. low focus cost and it stacks effectively resulting in a 15% AP buff. For a level 80 Devilsaur that is a huge buff meaning that instead of needing froststorm to proc in order to get high dps your getting insane dps on every hit.

  86. Fangmaw - August 4th, 2008 @ 1:20 pm UTC

This is gonna b awesome! ive always wanted 2 tame a devilsaur and a chimeara, now all i need are a wyvern, a dragon and a new snake and all my dreams hav come true!

your all forgeting about kodos they need some love to

  89. Dweezill - August 4th, 2008 @ 4:41 pm UTC

Well, I am personally hoping for Oozworm (Dustwallow Marsh), Kurkus (Amethyst Isle), and the Hippogryph (Ashenvale). I doubt I will get them, but I am hoping. If “exotic” is inclusive to only three families,I personally won’t go that far in the tree fopr the ability. I will stic with my spider (Zarakh look), pink tallstrider (Mazzranache look), and black lion (Humar). I’ll just add the rare silver gorilla (forget his name) and the blue scorpion as my two newbie pets. Just hope “exotic” gets a bit more variety than 3 families. Otherwise, it won’t be worth the talen points to me.

  90. Seidouyumi - August 4th, 2008 @ 5:40 pm UTC

One of the possible exotic pets is the Proto-Drake since it has been listed as a beast and was tameable in the Alpha from all the reports.

Do not forget that there might be some exotics that we haven’t seen or heard of before due to them not being currently in the game.

  91. Bradagore - August 4th, 2008 @ 6:30 pm UTC

On Seidouyumi’s subject – we’ve not heard anything about new tameable species from Northrend. I’d thought at around this point in TBC we already knew about Ravagers and the like. Is this because they’ll do a pass later and set various beasts as tameable (exotic or otherwise) or are the exotic families the “new” pet species in WOTLK?

And if the former, what new beasts are there out there on the beta that look as though they might be decent pets?

    @Dweezil:
