WotLK Beta: We Have 5 Pet Slots!

Okay, I spoke too soon when I said there were no obvious changes in the new beta build, build 8714. Check out this sexy screenshot:

WotLK Beta - Stable Master with 5 Pet Slots

That’s Kaet’s stable … with three pets in the stable, plus one empty stable slot, and one empty slot out with her.

For a total of five pet slots.

You must purchase the new slots from the Stable Master just as you did the first two stable slots you bought. I don’t know if the price on the first two has changed, but the new ones are a fairly reasonable 50 gold and 150 gold.

  2. Styfios: Umm … *abashed voice* I released them. *talking very quickly* Only in the beta, you understand! But I needed the space because it’s hard to keep up with 25 families when you only have three slots and I wanted to play Mania normally with her cat so Kaet was put on family-watching duty and I still had to copy over another copy of Mania anyway to try to keep up with more families better and I didn’t know they were going to expand the stable so soon! *big breath*

As it is, I have Mania #2 in Outland and Kaet (normally) in Howling Fjord, and each released all their normal pets to tame harder-to-reach families. These extra slots will give me a bit more leeway there, which is good.

  3. OH please please pleeeeeeeease let this be one thing that makes it to the actual release!!!!!

And yes, you can go wild and release and tame whatever you want in the beta and know that it’s not going to muck about with your actual in game pets. I’ve been told I need to give up my 55 boar and just go retame one when I’m 70 – and then it’ll automatically be lvl 65 and I won’t need to push it up those 10 lvls. That’ll be nice actually. Er, not that I’m going to be releasing that boar until I’m sure that’ll be the case in actual release.

  4. I don’t consider 150g reasonable but I’m an engineer lol anyways thats compared to TBC gold prices who knows in WoTLK

  5. Finally, the long awaited expanded stables! *Throws confetti*

But, dang… my two hunters are gonna have one heck of a time leveling up five beasties each x_x. I guess I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that Bliz perhaps makes it somewhat more easy to level our furry, scaly, slimy, ect. buddies!

  6. Whether this is old news or not, I’m not sure, but in the latest Beta build, the Ravasaurs in Un’Goro are tamable. Beast Lore shows them as tameable, and when I tested taming one, I was successful.

  7. Yeah you don’t have to worry about leveling up the pets now – if you have a level 70 hunter and go tame a certain level 9 pink tallstrider – that pet once tamed is BAM – level 65.
I hope to soon be surrounded by masses of hunters with unique and random pets.
Variety, it is a nice thing!

  8. omg, omg, omg, [doing the happy dance]!

True, it’s been pretty easy for me in the past to keep at least 2 pets within 2-3 levels of my own but keeping 3-5 pets leveled could be challenging. So long as Blizzard keeps the 5 stable spaces when WotLK is released … I am up for the challenge!

  9. .-. That two headed hound still bugs me, I wonder if Kurken will ever be made tameble. Ah, stable slots, stable slots, stable slots, I wouldn’t care if they cost me 1k gold to obtain, they are most welcomed. <3 /dance

  10. 50 and 150 gold isnt too bad. It makes you pay for um but doesn’t kick you in the crotch to do so. I’m good with it like this. And I’m totally stoked to see it. Can’t wait for Wrath.

  11. I would not mind if stabled pets were kept within five levels of the Hunter, even stabled. To explain. . .say a Hunter stabled a pet at level ten and went off to fill up their slots. While the Hunter continued to level, those pets would start leveling alond with the Hunter beginning at Hunter level 15.

The way things are set up now, the Hunter will just release and retame something. I hope that makes sense.

  12. I think the basic idea for the cost increase is to even it out, to make it more likely that you will have high level pets, and only need to tame high level pets by the time you aquire that much money. So far Mania is reporting that pets in the stable don’t auto level, but that may change later.

  13. I’m just saying that I like the pricing more or less. While I might wish it was less I”m not going to cry with it where it is now.

As a side note I REALLY wish people would stop saying “I wouldn’t care if it was 1000 or 5000 Gold”

If they read that too often, it WILL be 1000 or 5000 gold!

50 and 150 is not chump change but it’s not weeks of grinding and waiting either. It’s nice. The last two slots will be had by pet collectors and deep playing hunters. Most surface lvl hunters or ones that don’t focous on their pets will only have the first two.

Myself? I’m getting both the new slots with in 10 minutes of Wrath loading on my PC.

  14. Well, I’m only level 33, and I have all 3 of my pets at level 33. I think it is pretty easy to level up a pet. Just fight in areas that have mobs at the lowest level you can get exp at. The pet levels up faster than the player, so it is pretty easy to level all 3 up that way. At this point,I would say it would even work for 5 pets…. but I won’t know that till the WOTLK is released. Anyway, I have had my pink tallstrider (Mazzranache) foralmost 20 levels now, and I plan on keeping it no matter what. I think Clutchmother will deffinately be the lesser seen tames tallstrider because it is a pain to tame. Also have my pet Zarakh ready to go. Had it since level 19 and it is my favorite pet. So, now witht he new stable spaces,i don;t have to get rid of any top get the Ape I want. lol

  15. Oh my god.

    Oh my freakin’ GOD.

The second I load WotLK, those slots are MINE.
I have long been annoyed somewhat at being fickle-minded with pets. I’ve knocked down my favourites to two (Dire Raven and Rak’Shiri) and upon hearing this and being of the huntress-persuasion, I am dancing off the walls here!

…ayup, I’m one very sad dwarf hunter, I know XD

I hope this remains in the final release and is not Blizzard’s way of poking us in the eye with a sharpened spear.

Hmm…now I have to work out what pets I’ll be getting from here on out…!

  16. Oh yeah, while I am here…. does anybody know if the extra stable slots become available only after loading WOTLK? or do they appear instantly without the upload like the family abilites? Just curious to know.

  17. Er, Dweezill, not to sound harsh but level a bit. Around about sixty five you’ll start to understand the problem with leveling pets.

  18. Dweezill: Good question about whether the new slots are restricted to hunters who buy the expansion or not. Unfortunately we beta testers have no way to test that — so we’ll have to see if a Blizzard poster knows. I’m going to guess, though, that they will open all the slots to all hunters. But it’s always possible that they’ll restrict it.

  19. Palladiamors,
You are correct. I don’t know about leveling at higher levels… yet. I have only been playing this character for a couple weeks, so I have been leveling nicely… would be higher if work didn;t get in the way. Just wanted to point out how I have bee doing it thus far. Not trying to sound like a pro or an expert. just wanted to voice my experience so far. Oh yeah, hunters are by far the funnest class I have played with so far…. and I have tried them all.

  20. *Chuckles* Its alright Dweezil. Just that once you get up in the levels it can be hard to keep even one pet up with you, let alone three. Or five.

  21. I am just excited that I get to keep all3 of my critters. I love my spider, tall strider, and black lion(least favorite). Yeah, Humar isn;t as cool Zarakh to me. lol Just hit level 34 but pets are 33, naturally. Once I leveled, had to stop for the night. I am giddy with joy at the new stable slots. Now I see why all the “oldschool” hunters complain because they had to leave a spot open to learn new abilites. At least we won’t have to do that anymore.

  22. I only see one downside to having more stable spots, and it really has nothing to do with gameplay. I just think with all the stable spots, you are not going to see very many “unique” pets around. Since nabbing Mazzranache and Zarakh ( I keep forgetting to say he is a spider, for those who don’t know), I have not seen another player with them. Given the new abilities and more stable spaces, I think having a truly “unique” pet that no one uses will be a thig of the past. But, it is something I can easily live with.

  23. YESYESYES!! Pleaseeeeeee Blizz keep this PLEASEEEEEE…. Ohh this would be the best.. I can finally tame the beatss I’ve wanted <3

  24. The new 2 slots leave me to tame 4 new pets. I’m going into Wrath with myghost wolf Kiba only. The only pet I plan to tame so far is one of those white saberworgs, and maybe a chimaera, but that’s it.

New talents, all the families get awesome abilities AND more stable slots? Wow, we hunters are getting so SPOILED hehehe! <3

  25. Dweezil, I only leveled two pets on my hunter on the way to 70, so I could get the skills needed without having to give one up. In the low 60s, it was a bit easier to keep them both leveled than it was 40-60 due to the large amount of XP that was needed to level, but when I hit level 66 and one cat was not quite 64, I gave up, went to 70, and am just now catching her up.

When Wrath comes out, the best bet would probably be to ding 80 and then go tame whatever you want, because anything under 75 will be that much closer to the level cap. (Anything 75-80 you could tame as you go, though.)

  26. I’m so stoked about all these changes, and hope they make it in the final version of WotLK.

And seriously, its about time we got more stable slots, autoleveled pets, plus pets that come with skills and talents already built in instead of the tedious process of having to trap, tame, and release every time we wanted a new pet skill. And exotic pets for BMs! Considering how large the hunter class is playerwise, there is really no reason for Blizzard to keep ignoring these issues.

And I don’t see why these changes shouldn’t happen…its not like its going to make or break all the other classes in WoW for hunters to have two extra pets, or not have to tame to learn new pet skills, or no longer spend tedious hours grinding lower level pets up…if anything it just makes for a happier hunter population! (And happier hunters, WoW players=more money for Blizz. So yeah, it pays to listen to us.) And well, if the other classes are jealous that we can now tame Devilsaurs…haha, they need to roll a hunter to get their own. :D

  27. Ahh~ I absolutely cannot wait for this. I love hunter pets, only reason I became a hunter and I’m looking forward to all the updates i’ve been seeing so far (I am not picky). More slot’s? I can’t think of a true hunter who would complain! The price is fair (Or at least I think so.) , although I know someone who thinks it should be higher (Bah, Mages :P). I am happy! Probably the best update I’ve seen so far, besides my first time looking at wotlk hunter talent tree :P. I look forward to reading more about hunters in the future :)

  28. nah, there are still unique pets…/cuddles ghost wolf

it’ll just be nice to see pvp’ers with something then King Bangalash, I swear it drives me crazy. Wolves will actually be good for pvp, omg. /love And I finally get a moth! Been wanting one since I first saw em!

I think these changes will mean a lot more variety in pet usage, by people other than us super pet lovers.

  29. I have a question, not relating to stables but the pet auto leveling to 5 levels below you… If you’ve already tamed a pet, and it’s lower than 5 levels below you, will it auto level anyway? Or do you have to retame it?

  30. To Shrinlah

At the moment, it has been confirmed that stabled pets who are more than 5 levels below your current level will not auto-level once taken out of the stables, thus meaning you would have to re-tame said pet once Lich King is released. This may change however, so we will all just have to wait and see what happens.

  31. I rather like tracking down odd creatures to tame just so I can learn extra skills, a bit like the appeal to having unique/rare pets. Hmm .. maybe blizz could introduce non-combat pet skills we could track down and learn? Travel the world and learn silly stuff.

It’s not all about min/maxing for combat, y’know?

  32. I can only say “Finally”, and probably “OMG yes yes yes yes”

I was a bit worry about the issue that probably cat´s won´t be a great DPS family, and I would NEVER release my faithful KIBA. Now, with more stable slots it is not a problem anymore.

  33. @Niabi: regarding the auto-levelling of stabled pets, the only thing we know at this point is that they don’t currently do it as part of the character copy process or when a pet is taken out of the stables in the Wrath beta. Blizzard haven’t said anything one way or the other as to whether or not this is going to change, but since it would be pretty easy for them to hook the auto-levelling code up to the stable master as well as to Beast Taming, that is what I eventually expect them to do.

  34. Score, I can keep all my old critters and STILL get an Ancient Core Hound if/when Blizzard makes them tameable.

I’m still genuinely surprised to see this happen, but it’s probably the best news out of Wrath Beta so far.

  35. I was worried I’d got the wrong end of the stick before but I am so glad it’s the news we were all hoping for! 5 stable slots and no more keeping a spare to learn pet skills, yeehaw! If I was excited for Wrath before it’s nothing to how I feel right now! :D

This is like my hunter dream come true. I never wanted to be able to tame unlimited pets, but I just wanted a few more… I was concerned I’d not be able to have an Exotic pet without giving up the pets I’ve grown fond of, but thankfully it seems that issue is solved.

The only thing I’m confused about is the auto-levelling. If you tame a pet so its 5 levels below you and keep levelling while it lags behind (because you’re questing or it had been stabled some of the time) will the gap just get wider and wider like it does now? For some reason I was under the impression that if you went too far ahead again it would catch up to within 5 levels. Now I’m just confused. :p

  36. I think Dweezill has learned one of the best parts about being a hunter. That is why I enjoy playing them, you can have your very own pet of whatever kind you like.

The new stable slots will be great for people busy in the endgame doing PvP, solo, and raid activities with different pets. Similarly, casuals will be able to keep a few more pets that they enjoy playing with. Another point is that we won’t have to have a flexible spot to train pets and learn new skills. We can actually use all of the slots for pets we want to keep.

  37. I saw someone mentioned ravasaurs were now tamable. (The raptors in Un’goro, once untamable for no good reason…)

If this is the case… has anyone tried taming the pterrordax yet? I’m just curious.
