WotLK Beta Build 8714

The Wrath of the Lich King beta realms were updated this evening to build 8714. The update was pretty small on the client side: only about 22 MB, but of course we don’t know how much might have changed on the server.

I’m going to do a quick pass over pet talents and pet skills, but data miners aren’t reporting any changes so far and I don’t see anything obvious. Leave me a comment if you hear about a change!

[Update] Okay, there are some interesting changes in this build — like our expanded stable! And I should have mentioned that in this post, but I was so excited I went and made a whole new post for it instead. Ah, well. But still, if you hear about any other changes please let me know!

[Update #2] Although I haven’t yet had a chance to play with it myself, this build also includes the first pass of a built-in threat meter. That’s kinda neat … but way, way neater is the fact that underlying information about threat has apparently been opened up completely to add-on developers. That’s great news for hunters because it means we will soon be able to get exact numbers for threat generation from all sorts of pet abilities.

[Update #3] And they brought back pets aut-assisting on Defensive. Yay! I like that feature. It does need to be toggle-able, though.

Mania could you go check and see if Chimeras are tamable? I wish I had access to the beta so I could go around taming awesome pets but alas I’m not that lucky.

Maybe Im probably not the first person seeing this but Chimeras are now listed as a pet-chategory on wowhead. Whats next Griffons from hinterlands, Fireflies, Fen Striders from Zangarmarsh or maybe a stomping Clefthof :)

The Outland chimeras are (still) not tameable, and the server is restarting. I’ll go check the old world when it comes back up.

mmh, think I read that on wowinsider.

Here’s the link to wowhead btw. :)

How do you get into the beta? Been wanting to try for a while

The built in threat meter is a wonderful idea. I’m glad that Blizzard is not as limited in vision as, say, Microsoft in opening up that to the add on developers too.

I’m hoping for wyverns and hippogryphs to be tamable personally ;)

Any hints to new tameable “exotic” pets except the devilsaur? For example, are the chimeras in Winterspring tameable?

On a related note, is there already new (blue/epic) dragonscale leatherworking stuff (past skill level 375) available from the respective trainers?

@Darknez … It would be really a huge deal to be able to tame wyverns or hippos or even the Griffons in Hinterlands. I think even if they were deamed “exotic pets” Blizzard would be forced into creating a questline to give you the ability. I honestly do not believe they will allow this, because it will open up a HUGE can of worms. I really do not believe Blizzard wants to have to deal with the hunter community spamming forums about “why can’t I make my pet into my epic flying mount?”. They have already had this since day 1 with land mounts.

@nobbie … I really hope we do not see any further profession additions to any profession until they start really testing raid content and start itemizing the end game. We can judge from past history that there will be a token “mid level” piece of armor and then some gold sink raiding level epic pieces. I would really love to see these crafted pieces get upgrades in each tier ala the BS methodoloy instead of seeing Shadow Priests in full Shadowweave until they got T6.

All that being said, I do not want to see any thing about any other profession besides the DK Runeforging and Inscription for a month or so. It is extremely easy to add content to professions to make them viable over the course of the expac. Its hard to create an entirely new craft. There were some issues with JC in the early portion of BC, but they remedied that extremely well in the end. Lets wait and see what they can do with another profession before we start waiting for those raid level recipes from the current ones.

    Nissi-

I’m not sure about the whole ‘why can’t I make my pet my epic flying mount’, but there IS a big problem that you missed in there. I think, with the exception of a small population of Gryphons in Hinterlands, most require an Alliance character to be able to declare war on the Wildhammer Dwarfs. It would be similar to the whole issue of Olm the Wise. I think, though I’m not 100% sure, that passed neutral (that is friendly or above), you can’t declare war on a given faction, thus making it pretty much impossible to tame one if you are Alliance.

I’m honestly not sure about Chimerae as tameable, though I know it’s going to happen.

I do want to quickly point out that the nian- or two headed hounds- are not core hounds, and only come in two individuals- The Kurken and Omen. Omen is, incidentally, a Demon.

Yeah, I was never interested in riding my pets anyway… Never expected the ability, and I don’t see why we should let those that complain stand in the way of increasing our range of pets.

However seeing as Chimerae will be tamable, I don’t see any harm in letting other large beasts of flight become tamable… I agree with Seidouyumi that it would be difficult to get Gryphons as they are currently all friendly to us (as far as I know) and the Wildhammers are no longer a listed faction.

How about hydras then? I wouldn’t mind one of those :P

  12. Seidouyumi - August 2nd, 2008 @ 11:42 am UTC

Of the non-tameable beasts out there I would say that the probabilities are good for Chimerae, Hydrae, Basilisks, Diemetridons, Mana Wyrms, Worms, Pterrodaxes, Stags, Talbuks, Tripods, and Zhevra.

Another thing about Gryphons, Hippogryphons and Wyverns is that they are all highly intellegent creatures. They are either on par with, or just below human intellegence and, thus, would not be tameable. Typically, Wind Riders and Gryphon Riders form life long bonds with them from birth in order to be able to ride them.

  13. Darknez - August 2nd, 2008 @ 12:15 pm UTC

I read somewhere that Chimera are guardians of nature, friendly with night elves… however I’ve never seen a nice one in the game!
Whether that classes them as intelligent I don’t know…

I don’t know if deer/horse-like animals would be tameable, but I’m all for variety.
    We shall see soon enough…

  14. Seidouyumi - August 2nd, 2008 @ 12:26 pm UTC

    Darknez-

Chimaerae are listed as ‘sentient’, but not intellegent. They do have a strong bond with the Night Elves and are extremely territorial. They do tend to protect areas, and once protected Nordrassil.

  15. Darknez - August 2nd, 2008 @ 4:12 pm UTC

    … but… Pinky’s intelligent, and tameable.
I’ll hear nothing about pinky not being intelligent! :)

(Pinky being the pink plainstrider, at least thats what I’ve been told he’s called by my fiancee)
    More like beaten into submission…

Seidouyumi – The Wildhammer faction was removed a while ago, and they were incorporated into the alliance so currently all gryphons are alliance friendly. I don’t think Gryphs or Wyverns or Hippogryphs should be tamable since they already serve as faction taxis and are already mounts ingame. The odd exception to this ofcourse are the giant bats that serve as undead taxis, but my guess is that these are far too big to be pets and the bats that are tamable atm are the max managable size ( but then we get devilsaurs…gah well that puts a spin on it).

  17. Nimizar - August 4th, 2008 @ 1:53 am UTC

Since the 2.4 patch, dragonhawks are used as both pets and mounts along with bats. That said, I also don’t expect to see gryphons, wyverns or hippogryphs as pets – there are more interesting options out there.

  18. Cullen - August 4th, 2008 @ 10:39 am UTC

Really, being a mount shouldn’t necessarily exclude a beast from being tamable though. Netherrays, cats, wolves and raptors are all tamable and mounts.

  19. Darknez - August 4th, 2008 @ 11:32 am UTC

I’d like the option to be able to tame more things even if some people may never want them. Nothing wrong in having more choice available.

Hell, I’d even try one of those snakes you can get in WC (for example)

Here’s a wild idea… one I am sure will NOT be added… but it would be fun. All the little critters that people use as target practice (cows, snakes, frogs, skunks, squirrels… the list goes on), why not make it so hunters can trap them and sell them as “vanity companion pets”. It would be kinda nice for hunters to have a way to make a little extra cash at auction. besides, the vanity pets I would like are never at auction. just thought that may be kinda fun. I know, it has nothing to do with this, but still,I like the idea.

I was wrong.. there are Gryphons that are neutral to Alliance – ‘Wild Gryphon’ at the entrance to Hinterlands from Hillsbrad Foothills.
