WotLK Beta Build 8681

The Wrath of the Lich King beta realms have now been updated with build 8681.

There’s almost nothing new in the patch notes, except a note that the Calendar feature now works, and explaining the changes to mounts and non-combat pets that we heard were coming last week. (The calendar is neat: it shows in-game events like holidays and the Darkmoon Faire, and allows you to add your own events as well.)

But that’s not all the changes, of course.

The existing mounts and pets currently have a small problem — all of them say they have 0 charges, so you can’t learn them. Buying new ones seems to work, but hopefully they’ll fix the old ones for us. :>

Apparently the barbershop is operational now, although I haven’t seen it yet.

There is a new PvP button on the bottom bar, squeezed in between Social and LFG. It brings up the PvP panel that used to be a tab on the Character Info panel. I think it was squeezed out by the new Tokens tab (which is currently broken).

As far as pets go …

  • Exotic pets do not seem to be implemented yet.
  • My talent points were all refunded but my pets were not.
  • The pet talent trees now have an obnoxious background.
  • The bug with the tooltips that said they required too many talent points has been fixed.
  • And there are a bunch of pet talent changes, although most are pretty small. Let’s list those by tree …

Shared Pet Talents:

  • Dash/Dive now says it works for 16 seconds and has a 32 second cooldown.

Cunning:

  • Mobility now reduces the cooldown of Dash/Dive by 8 seconds per rank, which means that you can bring the cooldown down to 16 seconds — exactly the length of the effect.
  • Wolverine Bite now says it does 330 damage instead of 5 damage.
  • Owl’s Focus has a greater chance of a free special ability: it’s now 15%/30% instead of 5%/10%.

Ferocity:

  • Loyalty has been renamed Bloodthirsty (and has a new icon). It now increases happiness by 5% when it triggers instead of 10%. (Health is unchanged at 5%.)

Tenacity:

  • The Stamina boost of Blood of the Rhino has been increased slightly (to 2%/4% instead of 1%/2%).
  • Improved Growl has been renamed Guard Dog and now generates 10% happiness in addition to 10%/20% additional threat when your pet Growls. This gives the Tenacity tree a way to regen happiness without food.
  • Roar of Fortitude has been replaced by Roar of Sacrifice: Your pet absorbs damage from the friendly target up to a maximum of 50% of the pet’s total health. Lasts 12 sec. (60 Focus, Instant, 40 yd range, 3 sec cooldown)

There may be some other pet changes — certainly testing the family skills will take me rather longer — but that’s what I see right now. I’ll try to get Petopia updated as fast as I can and update you on any other changes I come across.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Can’t wait to see if new pets are included in this update.

Can’t wait to see if the new hairdoos are too.

Biggest nerf – Roar of Recovery now restores 20% of your mana instead 40 :///////

  7. Mania - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:41 am UTC

I’m checking devilsaurs now. The 51-point BM talent is still marked as NYI, though,

  8. Mania - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:59 am UTC

Tyrantus, the devilsaur in Netherstorm, Beast Lores as tameable. But he’s level 71 and I forgot who I was logged in as and took Kaet, who is still only 70. So she’s headed to Un’Goro to try there.

Hmm, is it just me or did hunters just get given a PW:Shield that scales with Stamina?

  10. PepsiJedi - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:07 am UTC

Ok. I’m a bit excited.. if you tame one Mania, can you tell us how much he shrinks? Clearly he’ll shrink ALOT but roughly how big he is once tamed?

WoWhead also now shows Chimeras as tamable (Cunning): http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?pet=38

    I … uhh … *awed look* I sorta just tamed a devilsaur.

Picture incoming as soon as I get someplace where the light isn’t so bad for screenshots.

    Sweet!

Per wowhead Chimera are now available to be tamed as well. :)

I’d vastly prefer pterrodaxes as a new flying pet, hopefully we’ll get that as another exotic..

  15. Shinryu Masaki - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:23 am UTC

Wait… if you just tamed the Devilsaur, does that means that it’s not an exotic pet? Or then again maybe Blizzard will allow hunters to tame them without the talent just so they can test them out.

  16. Deify - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:26 am UTC

Seems pretty exotic to me :P but spells aint fixed yet:
Your devilsaur ferociously bites the enemy, causing 4 to 6 damagem and boosts its own attack power by 5% for 12seconds.This effects stack 3times. (7 seconds cooldown)

  17. Nimizar - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:29 am UTC

I’m guessing Mania was 51 BM when she went devilsaur hunting :)

Also, are devilsaurs Ferocity like raptors? I was thinking of grabbing a raptor to try out, but if I can get to 71 (only a few quests away) and snag Tyrantus instead…

I guess I will find out when you put the new post up :)

  18. Shinryu Masaki - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:30 am UTC

Devilsaurs are listed as Ferocity on wowhead, while Chimera are listed as Cunning. Nothing for Tenacity pets though.

  19. Mania - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:37 am UTC

Devilsaur details in the next post: http://www.maniasarcania.com/2008/07/29/i-tamed-a-devilsaur/

I’m going after a chimera next.

  20. Nimizar - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:40 am UTC

@Deify – those stats are for rank 1. There was a similar thing back in alpha, when the new family skills initially went in with only one rank, then once Blizzard were happy with the effects, later ranks were added.

  21. Mania - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:43 am UTC

Nimizar: Thanks for the clarification on the skill there. I was wondering.

  22. Stranger - July 29th, 2008 @ 4:26 am UTC

Something different (updated) on wowhead pet page:
1.Family ability of cats (prow) and warpstalkers (warp) were gone. Would Bliz change these two family abilities beacuse they are less useful when compared to others’?
2.Lightning breath (of windserpent) has 10sec CD now. (previous no CD)

  23. Mania - July 29th, 2008 @ 4:37 am UTC

As it happens Mania has a cat and a warp stalker in the stable right now, and after the patch they still have Prowl and Warp (respectively). So I don’t know what’s going on there.

Lightning Breath getting a cooldown wouldn’t surprise me, though, since I believe it was the only family skill without one.

  24. Nissi - July 29th, 2008 @ 5:04 pm UTC

    @Stranger/Mania

Giving Lightning Breath a CD makes me one unhappy camper. I have had a Wind Serpent since taming Washte Pawne in the Barrens. I realize that having a focus dump in the form of the new Bite makes them a bit better in some terms, but WS hunters used LB as their focus dump. The ability is not overpowered in its current form. Unless they change back LB’s scaling to original BC numbers instead of its current nerfed form, a CD on it is completely unwarranted.

I have just been able to come to grips with the fact that I am going to have to say goodbye to my cat in Wrath due to it getting completey $#$@%#@ed with its family ability (Blizzard please expand the talent trees and make Prowl trainable). Now I am going to have to give up my favorite pet I have had and leveled with since the virtually the beginning of my hunter career because they nerf their reason for being?

  25. PepsiJedi - July 29th, 2008 @ 5:52 pm UTC

Nissi you do realize that just because they have prowl ((I too use a cat sometimes and I too, never use prowl)) doesn’t mean they can’t use the entire other DPS tree stuff? Your cat will still kick butt. Even if you never use the family skill
