I Tamed a Devilsaur!

Kaet with White Devilsaur (from WotLK beta)Now *this* is a pet!

Mind you, Kaet is a dwarf, and my new pet did shrink quite a bit … but still — that’s one tall lizard.

He’s got a couple of problems, though. He doesn’t have a proper run animation — he just walks really fast. And he kept his heavy thudding footsteps (although thankfully he doesn’t actually shake the ground when he walks). He has a roaring animation he does when he’s sitting around idle, but it has no sound … so it rather looks like he’s coughing up a hairball.

My little devilsaur comes with Growl, Cower, Bite, the resistances, and Monstrous Bite (Rank 1):

Your devilsaur ferociously bites the enemy, causing 4 to 6 damage, and boosts its own attack power by 5% for 12 seconds. This effect stacks 3 times. (25 Focus, Instant, Melee Range, 10 sec cooldown)

He uses the Ferocity talent tree and doesn’t appear to have any special talents.

Oh, and by the way — Kaet is completely untalented. So while it is likely that devilsaurs are exotic pets, it’s not currently linked with the 51-point Beast Mastery hunter talent.

(By the way, my thanks to Shinryu Masaki for e-mailing me about the devilsaur & chimaera news mere seconds after it appeared. *grin*)

Well, I tried — I’ve hit all the chimaeras I could find (I didn’t run into any of the rares) and not one of them can be tamed. And I’ve got to go to bed now — I’m falling asleep in my chair. :> But I’ll see what I can find out tomorrow if you guys don’t hear something before then.

I briefly chatted with Mania last night during he quest to check out tameable pets.

    I can confirm that
    The Kurken
    2 headed dogs in SMV
    Chimeras in SMV
    Arakkoa Protectors in BE
    Basilisks in Terrokar
    Fen Striders in Zangar
    Lightning Bugs in Zangar
Are not tameable as of yet. Still looking though.

“I tamed a Devilsaur” sounds like the name of a B movie. :)

However, I have a feeling a lot of people will want one though. There are, what, four of them in the game right now :)

    But very cool :)

Nevermind the Mage, I can hear the MT in Vent already “WTF is THAT!”. I nearly gave one of my guild’s tanks a heart attack when Bestial Wrath first came along; first time he even noticed any pet other than an owl. *grin*

This guy ‘though… actually tempts me to go try my hand at PvP. *HUGE EVIL GRIN*

  31. Ryuu - July 29th, 2008 @ 10:23 am EDT

5 actually if you count the one in Northern Netherstorm. Tyranus or whatever his name is. There are 4 in Un’Goro Crater. Black, white, 2 Tan ones - 1 of which is King Mosh.

  32. Seidouyumi - July 29th, 2008 @ 10:29 am EDT

    Ryuu-

Oh, there are four of them wandering around Un’Goro? I’m usually running away too fast to notice what’s chasing me other than it’s huge, it bites hard and it’s elite!

Every so often I go back and kill the elite guys who killed me leveling up.

  33. Suzi - July 29th, 2008 @ 10:46 am EDT

This guy ‘though… actually tempts me to go try my hand at PvP. *HUGE EVIL GRIN*

lol, I was just thinking Tsani how this would be perfect for PvP… Imagine the terror at seeing that running towards you!

I’m confident that not every other hunter will spec BM or go for the 51 point talent. Even those that do, I imagine many will be interested in different types of Exotics or will just have the talent for the pet talent points.

Personally I’d love a Devilsaur, but I’d go for a different colour. Then again I’d be tempted to go for many available that are currently untameable. Which reminds me - do we think the Chimera will do frost damage with one head and lightning with the other?

Btw, someone on Wowhead comments said about the Devilsaur spell: Everytime your devilsaur uses this spell he grows larger.

I’d love to know if this is true or not… and with Bestial Wrath… mmm!

Now Im gonna have to start praying so the size doesnt get shrunk when this goes live :D

  49. Nyx - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:11 pm EDT

You know, they’ve said we’ll be getting no new stable slots in Wrath… that sucks.

But I’m told that if you look at the new windows for our mount and non-combat pet spells, there’s also a tab that says… pets. [Non-combat pets are Companions in this system.]

So maybe Blizzard told the truth without telling any truth at all? What if our pets are going to become spellslots in this new window?

    Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease, oh pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease.

  50. PepsiJedi - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:13 pm EDT

I wonder what happens if you tame an exotic pet, then respec from BM to the other trees — will the pet be unusummonable until you spec back?

  52. Ryuu - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:40 pm EDT

It feeds on clefthoof and gronn.

  53. Kindinos - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:48 pm EDT

What I want to know is, what do you feed a devilsaur?

    Why, casters, of course!

  54. DarkWolff - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:50 pm EDT

“What I want to know is, what do you feed a devilsaur?”

They usually eat PCs when in the wild.

  55. Mania - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:51 pm EDT

    Heh!

Looks like they just eat meat, actually.

  56. Kindinos - July 29th, 2008 @ 1:51 pm EDT

As for what happens when your respec away from BM, Ghostcrawler, the Hunter Beta Representative/Class Dev posted:

As far as what happens if you have an exotic pet and respec, most likely the pet’s talents will just reset. Yeah you get a free pet respec out of the deal, but it’s not as if it’s free since the hunter has to respec. Any exotic pets in the stable won’t be lost, but you wouldn’t be able to get them out of the stable either. If you have an exotic pet at the moment you respec, then it will probably be dismissed (but not abandoned) and you won’t be able to summon it again, forcing you to go swap it into the stable. (Or abandon it if you’re THAT kind of hunter.)

    From a previous ManiasArcania article:
    http://www.maniasarcania.com/2008/07/28/more-on-exotic-pets/

  57. Keilden - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:03 pm EDT

Why would you want your Devilsaur to eat anything other then meat?

  58. Warfish - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:06 pm EDT

Why, when I think of the Devilsaur as a Pet, do I get flashbacks from the movie “Galaxy Quest”, the scene where the summon Gir’ig’nak (The Rock Monster) into the room of Soldiers and he stomps them all.

Whats that Mr. Rogue? You’d like to kill me? SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!

Stomp! Stomp! Stomp! Nom Nom Nom…….

  59. Featherkitty - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:10 pm EDT

I PRAY BLIZZARD THAT YOU DONT SHRINK THE DEVILSAUR WHEN WoTLK COMES LIVE PLEASEEE DONT PLEASEEE IM BEGGING

  60. Agravaine - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:14 pm EDT

My guess about respeccing seems to be correct…

I want an ability to tame ghotly pets like the Grimtotem Spirit Guides and that ghost owl circling around the Honor Hold tower! :(

  61. Palladiamors - July 29th, 2008 @ 2:19 pm EDT

Agravaine, at the moment the word is that when you respec out of beast master, your pet is dismissed and cannot be resummoned, but you can stable them. Once stable you can not un-stable them.

A ’spell’ book of pets would definitely be interesting. I still think we need a limit of like, I dunno, twenty or something, but a limit none the less! *Grins*

  62. Veyska - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:17 pm EDT

You have to admit, if we get a “spellbook” of pets that increases how many we can have tamed, that *technically* isn’t giving us more stable slots. Technically… <–> Have to wait and see I guess. :-)

  63. ChaosZereul - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:26 pm EDT

I will say this, I am beyond stoked to be getting a Devilsaur, but I’m also kinda pissed. I spent the last week raising up a Raptor since Ravagers are gonna be Cunning now. Now this lovely creature comes around. All that effort, wasted.

Oh, well, I’ll see you all in Un’Goro

  64. PepsiJedi - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:39 pm EDT

Well you do realise that it’s not really wasted? You’ll have your raised up raptor for two or three MONTHS…

I’m lvling up a second hunter as we speak and every time I spend gold to train him or tame a goofy pet just for one pet skill I say “Ok well, I won’t have to do this in months, but I’m not going to play for MONTHS with an inferior pet just waiting on it”

It’ll be worth it ‘now’ and untill LK comes out. So don’t see it as a waste. Just look on it as “The last time I”ll have to buy this skill or the last time I have to tame the ONE PIG in the world that has gore 7, just so my ravager can learn it…. sort of thing.

  65. Vish - July 29th, 2008 @ 3:59 pm EDT

    http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/articles/untameables.php

Since exotics have been confirmed (sort of) to only still be beasts, these are the only existing untameable beast families in-game. I reckon they will be added slowly with each beta patch, as they will all need to be given animations, stats, abilities, talents, etc.

Want to see an exotic tank pet, but I dont see much potential of that from this list.

    Hydras can be cool though.

But still I’m really looking forward to taming the white/purple Devilsaur since it will match well with my Warp Stalker. =P

  81. batgrl - July 30th, 2008 @ 1:00 am EDT

Heh, I’ve only just now realized - I can no longer go kill those big giant dinos in the crater - not if they’re legit hunter taming fodder! I have to admit to enjoying any revenge killing of those guys, just because they always seem to easily sneak up on my lvl 50ish characters when I’m questing in the crater.

I really hope people start taming and keeping them - can’t see enough of those big guys as pets, wandering around cities. (You know they dream of going all Godzilla over the place too!)

This is a great sign that Blizz is listening to us, as we want BIG pets. I know every hunter will have one come release day but after a month or so there will only be a few of us who are loyal to our Devilsaur :)

All we need is a kodo/cleefthoof or a huge dinosaur to tank.

Though I doubt there is a healer pet on the horizon, that would be to op in groups, or is there?

  96. Ansawa - July 31st, 2008 @ 12:55 pm EDT

People talking about the worms–I’ve noticed there’s a new worm skin in the Wrath model files that’ve been making the rounds, the Jormungar worms.

They’re PRETTY. Like sea slugs. I really hope those end up as exotics at least.

I don’t think sharks or threshadons can happen, simply because they live and are very water prominent creatures. Heck, watching a shark or a threshadons sorta swim in the air, or along the ground would be funny, though!

I don’t see anything wrong with making water beasts tamable, but making them only usable in water - rather like having a tanking pet, a dps pet, etc. Perhaps they’d have to make the other pets more prone to drowning (they can drown now, though it’s only happened to me once, when I was AFK).

My main has Hook of the Master Angler, from winning the fishing contest, so she can turn into a fish whenever she’s in the water. It would be cool to have a hammerhead as a companion.

On the subject of the Devilsaur and Monstrous Bite (Rank 1), it’s difficult to see how a spell with a 12 second duration and a 10 second cooldown can stack 3 times, but I guess that’s just something which hasn’t been fully thought-out yet.

  100. Elwindas - August 1st, 2008 @ 1:07 pm EDT

The Monstrous Bite thing is simple. It last for 12 seconds but has a cooldown of 10 which means the second bite goes off before the first expires. This refreshes the duration of the first bite and stacks to 2. The third would refresh the second and stack to 3. Repeating this over and over, you would think that the Devilsaur would have the extra 15% AP constantly. However, pet miss rates (especially for boss fights) are around 10-12% even talented. This means that the Devilsaur WILL miss some Monstrous Bites which means the buff will expire before the next bite refreshes it. The AP buff will be lost and the next bite will start the cycle again. I suppose you could be very lucky and have your pet not miss many, therefore keeping the buff up near constantly.

i saw on that one link that the cooldown is 7 seconds not 10 but maybe final one be 10

    Oh emm gee….
I know about devilsaurs and i probably will be the one amongst so many hunters in netherstorm, waiting for Tyrantus…
(Luckily i have epic flying mount and Tyrantus spawns very fast though)
And i think i will never leave a devilsaur again. I am all about dinosaurs - two raptor pets and a raptor mount. And now, omg, a simply, TREX over there.
Imagine the doom of opposite arena team when you open the door and your Devilsaur runs towards a rogue or mage… gnome. Mhehehe.
I wonder. How it will look with me. I am a bloof elf female character.. near Trex it will look quite cool, think personally. Not the one girl to mess with i guess xD

Cooldown is 7 seconds if you have 3/3 Longevity, 10 seconds otherwise.

  104. Dairar - August 5th, 2008 @ 3:58 am EDT

Mania, according to petopia, Chimeras ARE tameable in this Beta build… But only Nuramoc in Netherstorm. Could you confirm this for us, please? >:D

  105. Mania - August 5th, 2008 @ 4:03 am EDT

Dairar: Yes, Nuramoc is the only tameable chimera in this build, according to Ghostcrawler. There should be more in the next build.

Keep in mind that with as much news coming out of beta as there is, I don’t always make it back to correct previous posts. :> Your best bet is to check the more recent posts and see if more recent information is available.

well a ironhide devilsaur is blue but they r perrty hard to find u have to find a ironhide devilsaur if u aren’t 65 or higher cause ironhide doesnt have any knockback abilities tyrant will kick u and u have to start tame again and regular will stun u and u will have to start tame again the hard part about taming these though is that u cannot stun them while u tame them or else u start tame again i also reccomend u get the kurken the two faced dog that is lvl ten when u tame it it automatically gets to ur lvl and it fricken pwns people that r at ur same lvl
