Final Name: Scylla
Many of you know that since starting my dwarf hunter Kaet, I’ve developed a real soft spot for crabs. (And yes, people laugh at me every time I say that!)
But today’s request, from a Night Elf hunter named Estaron, is another great example of the growing legions of crab hunters.
Estaron writes:
I normally can name my pets but I recently tamed a crab and just cant seem to name it. I roleplay sometimes and have created a little backstory to it.
Estaron is not your regular hunter.
He is a night elf who enjoys exploring new areas and dislikes killing living beings.One day Estaron was in an area of Desolace that had a suprising amount of naga. One naga had a crawler as a companion. The crawler had clearly been neglected and was in pain. Estaron was dead-set on helping this crawler and with a shot to the head the naga fell to the ground. As the crawler came to Estaron’s side he knew he had found a companion for life.
A simple, touching story. Let’s see what we can do for Estaron and his crab.

Naga like name? Emmm clawscale.
A couple of Google and Wikipedia assisted ideas:
“Quanbumi” (from Cancer Quanbumi, the official name for US rock crabs)
“Sapidus” (from Calinectes Sapidus, meaning ‘beautiful swimmer’ and ‘savoury’, the official name for the US blue crab)
“Scylla” (from Scylla Serrata, the official name for mud crabs)
I quite like the rhythym of “Estaron and Scylla”

or Scrabble – it’s how they crawl around making “scrabbling” noises and it works crab into the name
or Ophelio – a kind of crab – Google Deadliest Catch Ophelio
I could come up with more … but I’ll stop here.
I started a Draenai alt hunter and you have to train a crab for your level 10 quest. I went back and got another one, I love hunting with it! His name is Carl. Carl Crab. It’s got a nice rhythm to it, don’t try to deny it! This weekend I’m off to enemy territory in search of exotic breeds of crab to get him some company, he likes the redheads! Wink wink!

Pinky? (Making Estaron “the Brain”)
Chitok? (“chitin” + “tok tok tok”, with a nice “Chinook” similarity… Chinook Salmon being about the same color as the crab)
Nagani? (“naga” + Voldemort’s pet)
Archiebunker? (old crabby guy)
I keep thinking of the sounds the lobstrocities in Stephen King’s Gunslinger novels made.

etc. You’d have to look at the books to see how they were spelled exactly. I think they had hyphens like Dod-a-chuck
my hunter is a crab-hunter. Mine is called “OldBay” but i like the earlier suggestion of Scylla. Another reason the crab should be named scylla: scylla was one of the most impressive monsters in The Odyssey of Homer. While Odysseus was not a wanderer by choice, Estaron seems to have embraced the wandering and exploring lifestyle.

I exhausted my clever crab names when I named mine Buster Crab. Of the suggested names, I do like Scylla best.

What’s always stuck out in my head about the crab is the noise they make. So I would suggest -

My first permanent pet, on my first WoW toon (Nelf huntress – created feb. 15th-ish 2005) was a blue-shelled crab from the beach of Darkshore right outside Auberdine. I thought crabs were cool, so I tamed it and named it Xvoorha. (Don’t ask – I don’t know why!)
One of my coolest memories of really-REALLY old-skool WoW is of me “parking” Xvoorha on the road heading south-east out of Auberdine and shadowmelding at the edge of the forest. Along comes a little gnome – obviously as new to the game as I was, and starts talking aloud to the crab!
“Oh, what’s this? An abandoned pet? How fascinating. Ha ha ha!”, he sort of goes – my memory’s a little foggy on the exact wording, but this was roughly what he said… I just sat there hidden and giggled to myself. I also found it quite amusing that Xvoorha just LOVED being served crab meat… Ugh! :P
Anyway, I soon got annoyed with my little crab because it was so slow, and it wasn’t very effective. Of course, this was back when hunters SUCKED, so I shouldn’t have expected too much. :) I ended up abandoning it in the middle of Stranglethorn Vale at level 36 in favor of (the very very ugly, IMO) King Bangalash. This was back when he was turbocharged though, and I put up with him being butt ugly simply because he was about 10.000% faster than poor ol’ Xvoorha. :(
I didn’t like him though, so after Blizzard adjusted pet chase speed to all be the same I tamed a stranglethorn tiger instead, and after that, Humar. But I still miss my old crab. I should have travelled back up to Darshore first before letting him loose; he’d been king of the beach there, at level 36! But I imagine he swam back there on his own, and now lives with a harem of crab-esses serving his every need… :)
My last crab was named ‘Cake’. I love that name for crabs. Or sandwhich…

@9 rehnkvist: Mine, a happy Maryland Blue crab named BluDeBlu is in reality from Darkshore just like @19 Faar but I tell everyone I found him in Old Bay. :) It was pretty fun running the disguise midsummer quest on Zoram Strand along with him!
Since Scylla won, if Estaron ever spends time pairing with another hunter, the other pet absolutely must be something with Bite-3 named Charybdis. Rock, meet Hard Place!
