Petopia Updated with New WotLK Pets

Last night I finally figured out how to get the WoW Model Viewer to work with the WotLK beta files.

I promptly took pictures of all the new pet skins I could fins (the ones that didn’t crash the model viewer anyway) and tried to match them up to the pets I have seen so far in my wanderings.

And the result is now posted on Petopia!

As I mention there, it is very likely that I have made many mistakes with these new pets — especially what they look like. It’s hard sometimes to get a good look at a creature when you can’t tame it and it lives in a strange, dangerous, oddly-lit land. So if you see any mistakes please let me know and I’ll get them fixed as soon as I can.

At this point, I’ve only explored a couple of zones — and I know I missed areas in those zones as well. So this is by no means a complete list of new pets. I’ll be adding to it as I go. And of course I let you know about new stuff here as well.

So when you have a chance, check out the WotLK New Pets page on Petopia.

My hands-down favorite so far? Surprisingly, the white spiky worg. I didn’t expect to like these guys, but I really do.

  1. Ehrm… Are the Spire Scarabs up for taming with the exotic skills?

And they’re not even included in the “can’t be tamed” section of Petopia :O :P

Would be cool to have a beetle running around next to you… Would prolly call him Lennon or Ringo or such :P

  2. I think I may go tame and level my corrupted blue crab from the coast of durotar again.

I don’t like how the snake is the same skin as the ZG one. Makes my scotty a lil less unique ;[

  3. @ keilden

Yep, Spire Scarabs are most definetly (sp?) beasts. You can beastlore them, scare them… etc etc…

Plus, it says so when i mouse over ;)

  4. I can’t wait to tame an eagle for my Tauren hunter! Now to come up with a suitable name for him/her in the meantime, hmmm …

I noticed on Petopia today that a tamable version of the eagle model was removed from the WotLK pets roster! Do you believe Blizzard will make all eagle models untamable by the time WotLK is officially released?

  5. Blizzard sure made one odd choice with moths when they decided the blue flutterers should not be tameable. This means that any hunters would have to tame the level 1 moths and level them up 5 times (because of the new auto-level thing) rather than being able to tame a level 10 (prettier) moth immediately. It doesnt make any sense to me, especially because you can tame the moths with exactly the same skin in Netherstorm at a higher level anyway.

  6. Remember that its still Beta. So some beasts that are untameable now might be tameable when it goes live.

  7. I have to say, eagles seem like a very appropriate bird for Tauren to be taming.

I’ll admit, I’ve always thought it would be kind of amusing to have a moth pet, ever since I first saw them in Terrokar. The thought of sending a big fluttery moth to attack someone in PvP just seems funny.

And of course, one of my first thoughts was of a scene similar to this in a battleground:

  8. Just went through the Grizzly Hills, Zul’Drak, and the Dragonblight and found a few more tameable beasts (and some untameable). I will be sending you another list with screenshots soon.

  9. Mania, can you tell us if the new “spikey” worgs have the same animations as the old wolves or the old worgs? As in, do the new spikey worgs sit, scratch themselves, and howl, or do they just stand there doing nothing? Are there any new animations in any of the families?

  10. The talk (again) about being able to choose our pet’s talent tree made me think of something I was turning over in my mind last night.

I know they’ve said they’re getting rid of the loyalty mechanic, which–while it will allow hot-swapping of pets, which is I GUESS a way of expanding our stable slots–seems kinda an overall loss for the feel of the hunter class for me. I’d like it if they could KEEP the loyalty mechanic, but with the following changes:

    1. Leveling loyalty should just take time the pet spends with you out and active, not experience (or “virtual experience,” at max level) gain. It seems weird that time should be the bottleneck to loyalty at low levels, but XP should be the bottleneck at higher levels–so just make it time.
    2. There should still be six levels of loyalty. Raising a pet’s loyalty should still reduce the amount you need to feed it to keep it happy. Letting a pet sit at unhappy long enough to go to 0 loyalty should still make it run away.
    3. Talent points SHOULD NOT be tied to loyalty, nor should ability gain. These are fine as proposed.
    4. However, one of two things should happen at max loyalty:
    a. The pet receives one or two more talent points. Not so many to make it unbalanced, but kind of an extra “here you go” for people who’ve had their pets for a long time. (This would be my second choice.)
    OR
    b. You get a one-time-only chance to pick a different talent tree for your pet. Thus you could have Cunning cats and Tenacious dragonhawks. Once you make this change, it’s final–you cannot switch your pet back to its natural tree or any other tree for any amount of gold. (This is my first choice.)

I’m debating whether I should post this on suggestions, or pester someone actually in beta to add it as a reply to the “loyalty system” thread in the hunter beta forums. ;)

  11. Again, thank you Mania, Nimizar, and Serenas/Luxatra for all the information for us starving non-beta goers. *Grins* To everyone flipping out about the non-tameables, relax for now. The beta has just come out, there is still plenty of time for fine tuning. Plus, the fifty one point beast master skill isn’t even implimented yet. They aren’t entirely done with our class, so we get to sit back and see how it pans out. That being said, I was looking over it, and Beast master better get some really interesting pets with that exotic pet line. Every other class and talent tree, and I mean EVERY other one got an actual spell or ability to use. Beast masters are literally the only talent tree with a passive ability as a fifty one point. That being said, it also has the potential to unlock several active abilities for our pets, and to allow us access to some truly unique pets of our own. Let us hope they do right by the beasties and their masters.

I know have…… a rather interesting image of a devilsaur and a moth fighting….. stuck in my head….

  12. Thanks Nimizar… now that you mention it, I do remember it being mentioned that caster pets would go away. I sure hope they don’t forget that commitment!

  13. Can anyone confirm if previously trained lower-level pets are automatically bumped up to 5 levels from your current, or does it only kick in for newly tamed pets? In other words, will a 70 Hunter with a 23 cat (for example) have it bumped to 65 when you log into the beta?

  14. I THINK Mania confirmed that the pets stored in her stable were not bumped up to five levels below her. Can’t recall for sure though.

  15. Yes, Mania confirmed that her low-level … ghost saber? I think it was, didn’t jump up to five levels below her when pulled from the stables.

  16. i really like the eagles, their beautiful. also seeing the color dark Brown on something else than a bear or owl makes me smile, ive always wanted a dark brown wolf.
BUT the worg models are so boring and im not dumping anny of my 3 pets.
still hopeing for 1-2 more stableslots! man..id pay 100g+ for only one extra.

  17. YES! FUCK YES! *swear words* I’ll stick with BM no matter what in Wotlk! I dont care if I’ll do lousy dps, I WANT A MOTH PET! and the new worg-wolves-things look awesome! I bet every single hunter is getting one and calling it Fenrir or Fenris..heck Fenrus! I might even reroll male be hunter and get him such a worg and call it Fenris and him Tyr (after the god who got his hand bitten off, if you didnt know)

  18. Is there any video of some of the new pets? I’ve searched youtube with no results. These new worgs are pretty sweet and I’m dieing to see how they are animated. I now am actually looking forward to WOTLK. :D

  19. omg, can we please stop being “huntards?” Yes, the worgs and mage hunter skins look awesome, but since every pet family now has it’s own standard ability, we have to take that into account. Wolf family only has Furious Howl which, let’s face it, sucks. If it had a better duration, power buff, and enough range to affect the hunter, then it wouldn’t, but as it is it’s one of the worst family skills for solo play and group pvp. The only reason to have a wolf is if you do a lot of raiding and want to bring some raid utility to the group via your pet, but even then, worms with Acid Spit or Tallstriders with Dust Cloud (if it works on raid bosses) are a much better choice. Same goes for Prowl. It was fun in pvp, especially for Nelfs with Shadowmeld, but with so many other really good family abilities, like Monstrous Bite for Devilsaurs, and Tendon Rip for hyenas, and the wasp’s poison cats are going to get knocked out of their #1 popularity spot.

Let’s please think our pet choices through carefully and not give people reasons to call us Huntards.

  20. @ Shanrei you don’t have to be BM to tame moths or wolves. BTW, if you get the right talents and pet skills, a BM hunter can out DPS a MM any day.

  21. Goosegrease: I’ll accept that the term huntard has some utility for a hunter who causes other players trouble through his or her lack of knowledge, but I do not accept the use of that term merely for a non-optimized hunter. My choice of pet will have absolutely no effect on you.

  22. very true, and I apologize if I sounded harsh. I’m really just trying to help. Hunters could be the most powerful class in the game, but a lot of people get distracted by some of the “flashier” things we do and miss out on the finer points of play. I’m just really tired of our class getting dumped on by people who think pets are “gimmicks” rather than a perfectly acceptable and unique gameplay mechanic. Don’t get me wrong, those skins are totally awesome, and I really wish blizz would give the wolf family a better ability. As it is, I’m definitely going for a Devilsaur for solo because of it’s massive damage output, and a wasp for pvp. it’s still a ferocity pet so it’ll do good dps and that poison and armor redux ability will really piss off the other team. I’m looking forward to finding out exactly how much worms’ Acid Spit reduces armor by, and am eagerly awaiting the Rhino family ability to be released.

  23. *nod* Yeah, I completely understand. And I too am very anxious to see fina and exact numbers on pet abilities. Until then, too much is just up in the air.
