WotLK: Liveblogging Borean Tundra

So I’ve finally set off for Northrend! After some difficulty getting on the boat, I landed in Valiance Keep on the outskirts of the Borean Tundra. As I wander across this dangerous new land I keep running across all sorts of interesting little things, so I thought I’d just sort of keep track of them here, stream-of-conscious like.

  • Hey! My gorilla eats bread! That’s new — and welcome.
  • Bloodspore Moth (Level 69): A pretty boring red/beige moth.
  • Moths eat cheese, bread, fruit and fungus. I forgot to check that before.
  • Tundra Wolf (Level 68): Ooh! One of those new weird spiky worg models. This one is light grey.
  • Oops. Bad idea to go AFK to type up a blog post in the middle of an unknown, dangerous land.
  • Aigh! A Scourge Plague Spreader is dropping scourge on my head! (It’s a floating platform. I can see I’m going to die a lot here.)
  • Rockfang (Level 72): A named (but not rare or elite) black spiky worg. Probably involved with a quest. Cannot be tamed.
  • There’s nothing out on thesebeaches. And ironically, the icebergs are larger above the water than below it.
  • I need 1,256,500 total XP to go from level 70 to level 71.
  • Heh! When I entered the Pal’ea subzone, the edges of my screen fogged up.
  • I was just killed by Kel’Thuzad.
  • Landing Crawler (Level 68): A nice white crab. Non-aggressive.
  • Sand Turtle (Level 70): White turtle. Also non-aggressive.
  • Shoot! We lost the world server.
  • We’re back! Turtles also now eat bread (in addition to fish, fruit and fungus).
  • I found an Unliving Swine, with the Dire Racoon look, but it’s undead and not a beast.
  • That’s interesting: Nedar, Lord of Rhinos, is a level 72 Elite humanoid who is riding around on his kodo “Lunchbox”. Each of them is individually targetable.
  • I’ve just run across a bunch of camps filled with hostile “Loot Crazed Hunters”. Cute!
  • Oh, it looks like the crazed hunters are part of a Nessingwary (or rather, anti-Nessingwary) quest line.
  • There are kodo everywhere, and elekks that say they are placeholders for woolly mammoth. Also caribou. None of these can be tamed.
  • Carrion Condor (Level 71): Extremely neat birds that flap arund or perch on rocks, but cannot be tamed.
  • I’ve been mining Cobalt as I go. It’s a very pretty deep blue stone.

Well, that looks to be about it for the Borean Tundra for today. I’m sure I missed a lot, and of course Blizzard is probably still making changes and may add or remove creatures anyway. Next up is Sholazar Basin … but not until I get some real work done.

  1. No there’s no release date. She’s playing in the Beta test. “unofficial” release date ESTIMATES say November. But blizzard hasn’t even said that much. That’s just gleaned from time frames with BC, and what best buy and amazon and game stop have for their pre orders. But ___NO OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE__ has been announced by Blizzard. Heck they haven’t even started selling tickets for blizzcon yet

  2. I do have a question, we have wolf people and can tame wolves, we have scorpion people and can tame scorpions, we have pig people and can tame boars, we have crab people and can tame crabs, we have hyena people and can tame hyena’s, we have bird people and can tame birds…. LK has Wolverine people…. Have you seen any Wolverines running around Mania???

  3. Yeah they’re the first and only “new pet” so far. The moths were “supposed” to be tameable in BC but there was something they couldn’t resolve. They apperently fixed it.

Not only that but I think they’re DPS Pets too. lol

  4. Ah, I love reading your blogs mania

    =X
There’s something quite distinct about them (not really sure what)

thx for keeping us hungry wotlk people updated
    ;P

PS tell me if you see any new tameable pets because i’m really eager about the new pet families :X

  5. Wolf people: Worgen
    Scorpion people: ????
    Pig people: Quillboars
    Crab people: Makura
    Hyena people: Gnolls
    Bird People: Arrakoa

Can anyone enlighten me about the scorpion people? All I can think of is flayers in outlands, and it’s a bit of a stretch…

  6. The Scorpion people are in outlands, In hellfire. I haven’t played alot of outlands stuff yet but I had a quest to go into a valley with them and light some fires and stuff. They had the claws and the tails and everything. Very Scorpiod.

  7. Clawed arms, stinger tails, bug guys((yes I know scorpions are arachnids)) that walk on 2 legs bipedaly. That’s close enough for me. lol

    http://www.wowwiki.com/Rock_flayer

Wowwiki even calls them ‘primitive huminoids’ You might not track them on the “Track humanoid” Radar, but they still serve as “scorpion guys” for me. Sides, it’s not a taxidermic statement. I was just saying we have alot of animals we can tame for the animal guys that we have. I’m hoping like crazy we get wolverines too. :)

  8. @Ryai: Actually, the only rock flayers who AREN’T classed as humanoids are the ones on Netherwing Ledge. Everything else is humanoid, not beast.

    /themoreyouknow…

  9. Rock flayers are indeed humanoids (and tracked as such): http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=16929

Not sure what K’T is up to in Borean Tundra, but I also got stomped by him and his goons while exploring.

But, Valiance Keep… does that mean you’re exploring with Kaet instead of Mania? If you’re playing alliance side, which server?

  10. Nimizar: Yes, Kaet on Northrend (PvE). Mania hasn’t copied over yet.

[edit] Scratch that — she’s copied now. I’m using the name Maniacal, also on Northrend.

  11. Re Scorpid people, there are large humanoid Scorpids in Ahn’Qiraj. General Rajaxx was one. The Prophet Skeram was also an ‘insect’ humanoid although he had 8 legs…so maybe was more of an Arachnoid. Azjol-Nerub in Northrend is the other site of the Aqir as opposed to Silithus which we have already seen. Nerubians can also be added as spider people. So yes there are loads of insect people out there.

  12. Re wolverines: I’m not so sure about this one. I hope I am wrong but there can be a lot of confusion around wolves and wolverines because of the way they are spelt. From what I understand the faction in question are linked to Arugal who was involved with the Worgen. This is part of the ‘faction war’ between the new Murloc race and the Wolvar. I can see Wolverines as beasts being on the table because they live in tundra in areas similar to the lowlands of Northrend. But I can’t see Arugal suddenly switching from wolves.

For the animal fans among you wolverines are mustelids which are related to badgers otters weasels and mink and are are totally different species to wolves.

  13. We sure got alot of Animalpeople. But we need Mothman. He could appear on one of the pvp bridges just befor they are about to break.

  14. @ Kurdor, With the fact that pets auto lvl to within 5 lvls of the player’s lvl, you don’t have to have a “new” gorilla. And I’m praying they give Thunderstomp new ranks automatically each 10 lvls through to 80. (they got a new rank at 40 and 50 in live, but not 60 and 70)

  15. I never really bothered to see if they were humanoids or beasts >.> I was always just interested in ‘that is a mob that I need to kill NOWNOWNOW’ I only track humanoids in pvp lol. But that’s a sorry excuse from a hunter lol.

Rudda: I hope it’s not just Thunderstomp that gets new ranks, but Poison Spit too

  16. THere is some sort of trivia addon that a friend was using, it had a question about Grizzly Hills that said it had “Wolves, foxes and even snowy owls” so I am looking forward to that.. Keep your eye out for Fox and spotty black/white owls!

I ment wolverines, I know what they are. :)
Wolvar, are wolverine people. Not the worgen.

At the top. If you look you can even find models that move on different websites.

I know about the worgen and argul but those are different. The wolvar are a race of (( To quote a blizzard emploee “lil wolverine dudes”)) and are based on bipedal wolverine peoples. You can distinctly see the face markings (( and in other shots the tails))

Wolverines are indeed no relation to wolves (( other than being mammals)) and yes are in the weasel family.

I want a big pet wolverine for my hunter to sick on other things and make bite the face. :)

  18. Yay, I was SO hoping you’d get into beta because these are just the kind of “on the scene” notes that I’d want to know about! There are going to be a lot of happy crab owners I think.
