Petopia Updated with WotLK Info

Since the WotLK beta has just opened, we’re being flooded with new information right now, and so I’m using the blog to help keep all you cutting-edge hunters up on the cutting edge of pet news. But I can’t leave Petopia behind!

So I’ve added a new WotLK section to Petopia — or more properly, expanded the small section that was already there.

For the moment things are a bit patchy: I’ve posted the pet-related items from the beta patch notes and all of the data we have on pet talents (including layouts mocked up by my lovely husband, since I don’t have any screenshots of the real trees yet). But the pages for new pets and pet skills are sadly empty right now. (And they will stay that way for a few more hours, at least — I’m exhausted!)

And my computer is groaning under the load of downloading 1.88GB of WotLK beta, so I’m headed out to dinner while it finishes. Feel free to comment here or e-mail me with any cool info you run across and I’ll do what I can with it when I get back.

  1. Frotes posted on the Beta Hunter forum:

“Spider has a 2min cd range web for 4 sec
Raptor has a 1min cd bleed attack
Turtle has a 3min cd 50% shield wall for 12 seconds
Hyena has a 20 sec cd tendon rip for 6 sec
Flamingo has a 20 sec cd dust cloud which gives a target 30% miss for 8 seconds
Bears have a 10 sec cd swipe”

    I assume Flamingo means tallstrider.

  2. These are the new/changed non-talent-based skills. Existing skills that have not changed are not listed, but they’re still available (examples: prowl, thunderstomp, lightning breath, etc.)

Universal Skills: Every pet can now learn Growl and Cower.

Bad Attitude (rank 6): 25 Focus, 5 yard range, 3 min cooldown. Snap back for 81 to 115 damage at any target that strikes you for the next 2 min.
    Crocolisk.

    Bite (rank 11): 25 focus, 5 yard range. 120 – 170 damage.
Bat, Boar, Carrion Bird, Crocolisk, Dragonhawk, Hyena, Nether Ray, Ravager, Serpent, Spider, Turtle, Warp Stalker, Wind Serpent and Wolf.

    Claw (rank 11): 25 focus, 5 yard range. 120 – 170 damage.
Bear, Owl, Cat, Crab, Raptor, Scorpid and Tallstrider.

Dust Cloud: 50 Focus, 20 sec cooldown. Kick up an obscuring cloud of dust, lowering the chance for enemies to hit by 30%. Effects last 8 sec.
    Tallstrider.

Gore (rank 9): 25 Focus, 5 yard range, 10 sec cooldown. Gores the enemy, causing 37 to 61 damage. This attack has a 50% chance to inflict double damage, or triple damage if used during a Dash.
    Boar.

Nether Shock (rank 6): 30 Focus, 20 yard range, 30 sec cooldown. Instantly lashes an enemy for 49 to 69 Shadow damage. Also interrupts spellcasting and prevents any spell in that school from being cast for 1 sec.
    Nether Ray.

Pin (rank 6): 80 Focus, 5 yard range, 20 sec cooldown. Pins the target in place, and squeezes for 162 damage over 6 sec.
    Crab.

Ravage (rank 6): 80 focus, 5 yard range, 1 min cooldown. Violently attacks an enemy for 81 to 115, stunning it for 2 sec.
    Ravager.

Savage Rend (rank 6): 25 focus, 5 yard range, 1 min cooldown. Slashes the enemy with the raptor’s talons for 49 to 69 damage, and causes the target to bleed for 20 damage every 3 sec sec for 15 sec. Successful critical strikes with this ability temporarily boost the raptor’s attack power.
    Raptor.

    Smack (rank 11): 25 focus, 5 yard range. 120 – 170 damage.
    Gorilla.

Snatch (rank 6): 40 focus, 5 yard range, 1 min cooldown. The bird of prey grabs the enemy’s weapon with its talons, causing 49 to 69 damage and disarming them for 6 sec.
    Owl.

    Bear.

Swoop: 35 focus, 8-25 yard range, 25 sec cooldown. Your pet swoops at an enemy, immobilizing the target for 1 sec, and adds 25% melee attack power to the pet’s next attack.
    Carrion Bird.

Tendon Rip (rank 6): 25 focus, 5 yard range, 20 sec cooldown. Tears at an enemy’s legs for 49 to 69 and reducing movement speed by 50% for 6 sec.
    Hyena.

Web (rank 1): 80 focus, 20 yard range, 2 min cooldown. Encases the target in sticky webs, preventing movement for 4 sec.
    Spider.

  3. Blue Post:

“We’re still working on implementing this particular talent. The talent will allow you to train a different “class” of pets which we’re calling “exotic” right now. Only hunters with this talent will be able to train those pets. They won’t necessarily be “stronger” (though will all have unique abilities that you can only get from exotic pets), the extra power you should get from the talent will be from the additional pet skill points (pet talent points).

    Devilsaur anyone?”

  4. The talents listed by Darkautumn look *very* interesting! I really look forward to exploring the different pets and classes. I hope it won’t change too much so that I’ll be wanting to replace any of my pets. I’ve grown really attached to my ripfang and trachela. The tanking tree looks super interesting tho!

    - But I can’t help but notice that “If a hunter tames a pet that is more than five levels beneath their own level, the pet will then have their level increased to five levels beneath the hunter’s own level.”… So those hunters that struggled to get to Eversong Woods to tame the beautiful red lynx and brought it all the way to 70 with them will now no longer have a special pet! Anyone can head up there, tame a level 7 lynx and instantly have a level 65! Awww :o(

  5. You can tame moths now? They where never tameable before. Those Royal Blue Flutters in the Dranei area where always very elegant looking, though it seems like they lost their blue dust trail somewhere since.

  6. Yeah in the never post moths show up as DPS pets. I will so get a moth and one day let it face Ragnaros to see if the flame or moth will win.

  7. Last time I checked, moths got Serenity Dust – a self-HoT for the pet. The AoE threat could be useful, and it’s an additional tool for keeping them alive, but it seemed a bit underwhelming to me.

Also, the “Smack” on Dark’s list is a focus dump ability similar to Bite and Claw (i.e. the 3 are identical other than for their icon and name), for those pet families where neither Bite nor Claw was appropriate. The gorilla family skill is still Thunderstomp.

  8. Anyone seen the skills for the Sporebat? always wanted one, but they we’re so useless…

And any new pets in Northrend? those buffalo thingies with the antlers looked kinda cool :)

  9. Regarding Northrend pets, Ghostcrawler said they prefer to build all the new areas first, then go back over them to pick the beast families they want to make tamable.

I think the shoveltusks would certainly be a good option as a new family to make tamable.

  10. Can you check if differnt pet families have different modified base stats? Do cats still have +10% dmg, -2% health, etc? Or is it a completely level playing field now, with the talents making all the differences to stats?
