Several readers have written in today to let me know that Wowhead has added some interesting tools for hunter pets including:
- An all-in-one pet comparison table,
- A pet skill training calculator,
- And a 3D pet gallery.
I wasn’t able to get the 3D gallery to work quite right (the Java viewer in particular keeps crashing my browser), but I was able to get the pets to render in 3D. This is a handy feature if you need to see, say, the underside of a sporebat and you don’t have the WoW Model Viewer handy.
(Thanks to Bloodsail Admiral Volcan, Kurasu, and Defiler for writing in to let me know about this.)
The skill calculator is very handy. But the rest is on petopia for ages already. So i still use petopia rather than wowhead when it comes to pets
Java viewer…? The pet model gallery only uses the flash version of the model viewer. What was the problem exactly?
Was excited, when I 1st heard about it, on Wow Insider. But (after I looked at it) now I’m not really. Unlike almost all of the other Talent Tree updates, except for Hunters and Pallys, does not do it right, in the way “Wrath” will do to it.
When i saw this i was kinda disappointed because it didnt feel like anything new. all the talent trees show are what you already do with points but in talent tree form and everything else i use petopia for. the 3d view was neat but the pics on petopia work well enough. Pet info on wowhead felt like fast food, i’ll just come home to petopia and get a hearty meal when im hungry for pet information.
The pet calculator is fairly nice but to me it just feels like everything was stolen from Petopia. :( I’d still come here for information anyhow though even if I do like wowhead.
Keep in mind that all the basic information we have on pets comes from WoW itself, so (outside of specific screenshots, writing or layout) it doesn’t make sense to talk about the info as stolen.
Having said that, I will also add that I find Petopia’s arrangement of information to be more useful, but then of course I would. *grin* Regardless, it’s always good to see more sites adding tools for pet-obsessed hunters.
Incidentally, Petopia does host a nice Flash pet skill calculator.
I liked the 3D viewer my self. I love Petopia and wouldn’t leave it for the world but being able to see the backs and tops of pets was a nice little thing. Some pets look different from behind and as you’re going to be seeing their backs 90% of the time it could be important. Some ravagers for example are orange or purple on the front but have black back plates. Something you wouldn’t know from a face shot. And its always nice to be able to spin um and enlarge them and all.
I’ll still be using petopia for 99.9% of my pet needs but if I ever consider a new pet’s look, I might swing over there as well to get a GOOD look at it.
So, WoWhead, in their bid to grab up every bit of info they can under their own little banner, took your ideas (including the Flash talent calculator), tweaked it a vit to fit their name over yours, and threw it on their site, adding a 3-D gimmick to cover their asses in case they got called on it.
Bad show, fellows, bad show indeed.
Heh, I think most people know to go to Petopia for the most up to date information. I think the link is there in many of the quest comments – I definitely remember seeing it on Thottbot. I think the only thing I’d add would be a few more links to your blog – just because it’s here that we get the breaking news first. Or the RSS feed. Otherwise Wowhead isn’t going to be my resource for pets either – just quest info.
A 3D pet gallery is only of use to me on the day they give us the ability to put some kind of collar or armor on pets or something – like dressing room. Which I probably wouldn’t use – unless of course I could get one of those really punk spike’d collars – that’d look right on my flamingo, I think!
Oh and I like the Petopia skill calculator layout more. Seems better organized for what I’m going to put points in first.
I will be coming here for the foreseeable future, if for no other reason than I like the interface better here.
I find it amazingly ironic how much people on WoWhead raised a stink about WoWDB borrowing so much from their site, but when WoWhead takes stuff from here almost verbatim, they say nothing.
Hypocrites.
Heh. I was excited, until I realized most of this information, if not all, is already on Petopia. A page I have bookmarked and visit every day. The only neat thing was the 3D beast displayer. I’m still a little disappointed. Petopia is still much better for Hunters interested in pets.
Mania, you do a much better job for us hunters out there. The wowhead “hunter love” as wow insider put it is a waste of time and effort on whoever built it. Keep up the good work, milday.
I love petopia and the wowhead stuff wouldn’t replace it for me by far, but I’m a bit amused by some of the replies above. You people are acting like Petopia is the only site in the world or something and that this information is stolen. There’s thousands if not millions of wow websites out there guys. The information comes from the game guys. Same place that Petopia gets it. I love petopia I tell all my friends about it. It rocks and stuff but Wow head didn’t “Steal Petopia’s stuff! Oh the Hypocrisy!!!!” it just added a hunter section to the stuff it already had. The 3D viewer is new and it DOES let you see how the pets look on all sides and what not, which, is better than a standard static pic. Nothing wrong with either one but a full out manipulatable 3D version of each skin is nice. I wish Petopia had it then it would be 100% top in every single catagory. But no one’s saying the wowhead site is better. It was put up as “Another” Pet resource for us. I’m pretty sure no one’s going to kick in your door and block Petopia on your computers if you look at the wowhead site once in a wile. Mellow out. Use one or both for your needs.
I’ll be using petopia for 99% of my needs but when I’m concidering which skin of a new pet to get I might bounce over there AS WELL and look at them in 3D and close up and from different angles.
Doesn’t mean my love for Petopia is any less. It’s just using all resources at my beck and call to make a choice.
you want hunter pet info, you come to petopia. Always have and always will do and always will tell every other hunter i talk to about it.
I live petopiea and will allways come here for my pet needs. I like it here its more down to earth and friendsly. People actually talk to each other here and the people who run it actually respond to posts and their fans. GOTTa LOVE IT!!
Besides they dont have a special place to help each other name the unnameable. I love helping other hunters find names for their little buddies, every pet needs the right name and some times ya just need help finding it.
Ok they screwed up the pet talents in a totally weird way i mean for Example- If you fill a boars bite, dash, gore, and charge to there max you cant put anything in growl! I mean what the heck?!
Ok tell me that the pet skill training calculator you have up there mania isn’t how you spend your pet “talents” because other wise a cat could only know one attack move if you wanted it to know dash, growl, and prowl thats not good and i really makes no sense to me, can you tell me?
@Deidare
Pet’s can only learn up to 4 active skills. If you try to teach Growl to a boar that already has Bite, Dash, Gore, and Charge (for the record, Dash and Charge are on the same cooldown, no use training both) you will get an error message saying your pet can’t learn anymore skills.
As for the wowhead stuff, the only thing I found nice was the all-in-one pet comparison table. The talent calculator looks messed up, and while the 3D gallery is nice, using the model viewer myself I don’t see any use for it.
And I honestly didn’t like a lot of the comments posted on their forums about this. Seeing people say that now Petopia was trash and obsolete didn’t make me feel good. I love Petopia and Mania’s Arcania a lot, even if I rarely post. I just think it’s wrong to see all those weirdos getting excited over old stuff and bashing this place.
“Ok they screwed up the pet talents in a totally weird way i mean for Example- If you fill a boars bite, dash, gore, and charge to there max you cant put anything in growl! I mean what the heck?!”
That’s due to the inability to have more than 4 active skills in the pet bar at once, I believe?

Petopia FTW!!! Always!!!
However, I think that Wowhead is trying to get some stuff in place for WotLK. All they have to do now is rearrange the trees they’ve already got, and “Presto” completely updated for Wrath as soon as Blizzard releases it. In that case the trees will prob be nice to have, since the entire training system will have changed. For now though, it is completely redundant information to Mainia’s stuff over here.
If there is one tree per pet as some suggest, then wowhead’s trees will still have limited usefulness. However, if each pet gets 3 trees to choose from, it would be nice to see a whole build before actually spending the points.
As far as who stole from who? I am thankful that Mania has often linked to resources that may be useful. I am also most thankful for the HOURS that Mania has spent in unique research into hunter pets. I plan to continue using Petopia as my FIRST source for any pet info I need.
Hey, i have a suggestion… Making the Pet search into a mod, that you can enter the peremiters, and then Search, then paste that stuff into a chat window, or macro, etc. If you could get a mod started, like that, just linking to the webpage for info… It woudl be a hit!
@Shinryu Masaki
Ok thanks i really didnt know that my hunter may be level 70, but i never taught my pets more than 4 skills but i always thought you could learn them all. And yes i agree on you being mad at the negative comments towards Petopia its a great site so say it sucks, then that means you do!
