Name That Pet: Nirvana’s Owl

Nirvana with Aslan and unnamed OwlAnd speaking of alts, today we have a request from a player who is leveling her fourth hunter, a Draenei with a penchant for white pets.

I recently rolled an alt in an attempt to revive my interest in World of Warcraft, which has become increasingly stale over the past few months. This isn’t the first time I’ve embarked on the path of the Hunter (Nirvana is my fourth), but I am determined to take it all the way to 70 this time =) That said, Nirvana has successfully brought back my passion for this game. I enjoy collecting the rare and the beautiful … namely, the white beasts of the world.

White is a color as sacred and pure as the relationships my hunter holds with her pets. Nirvana already possesses the white lion Echeyakee, named Aslan, who has been companion and guardian since level 16. She is vehemently protective of her pets, her determination to defend them matched only by their equal will to shield her.

I’m looking for a name for the second addition to Nirvana’s family: the white owl Olm the Wise from Felwood. I’m looking for a name to fit such a beautiful and graceful creature, perhaps even taken from fantasy like her cat’s name (Aslan, as most of you will know, is the lion from the Narnia books).

So … mythical, pretty, and not humorous =) Gender is unimportant at this point, as I’ve yet to develop a personality and story for my white owl. A tall order, but I know you guys won’t let me down!

I’ve always had a thing for white pets myself. I’m sure we can come up with something great for Nirvana.

I have had many owls, and I have named almost all of them Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt. If you end up preferring a male name, why not just keep Olm?
    Good luck, and good hunting!

I suggest Cobain since your name is Nirvana. It may seem cleche’, but its very fitting.

  3. Blork - July 2nd, 2008 @ 4:32 pm EDT

howbout Alabaster since you like the white of it all.

  4. Niabi - July 2nd, 2008 @ 5:08 pm EDT

Evenstar from Lord of the Rings. It translates to “Evening Star”.

  5. RabidCoqui - July 2nd, 2008 @ 5:13 pm EDT

    Bubo!

I believe that was the name of the little owl in Clash of the Titans. :)

After searching for a minute I also came across a couple owl names:
Archimedes - The Once and Future King
    Hedwig - Harry Potter

    As far as non-owl names:
    Chil - The Jungle Book
    Gwaihir, Thorondor - Tolkien

While looking this up I also came across another name that makes me want tamable penguins reeeaaaalllllly bad: OPUS!!!!!

“Ooltewah” A town in Tennessee, whose middle school mascot is the owl.

“Owsley” A chemist during the 60s.

“Golconda” In the White Wolf Vampire games, the transcendent state sought by some vampires (similar to your character’s name in meaning).

  7. Nirvana - July 2nd, 2008 @ 5:58 pm EDT

Ooh, I do like Hedwig. I’m a big fan of the series but I’d completely forgotten that Harry’s owl was white too =) Plus over time as I’ve leveled, I’ve started to think of my owl as a she (I’m 68 now, woot!)

I’m also fond of Evenstar. Heh, this isn’t gonna be easy.

  8. tigger - July 2nd, 2008 @ 6:51 pm EDT

    i really like archimedes.

  9. Caljar - July 2nd, 2008 @ 7:12 pm EDT

Kaepora Gaebora - The owl who guides Link in Ocarina of Time

  10. Nachtwulf - July 2nd, 2008 @ 8:23 pm EDT

Sadly… if you try to name your pet Hedwig, you’ll find it blocked out.

Other nonallowable names I’ve run into are Whitemane and Herod (but strangely, Mograine seems to be okay…)

You could probably bollix the spelling some, if you still wanted to use it… but I suspect someone in good ol’ Rowling’s lawyer pool has made Bliz block out the legitimate spelling of the name.

  11. Kurdor - July 2nd, 2008 @ 8:50 pm EDT

“Pallas” - meaning white, pale. Denotes nobility. It’s also a title given to Athena specifically in the Greek pantheon, “Pallas Athena”, for a variety of reasons.

Also, she’s the goddess of wisdom, and one of her animal symbol is the owl, so that helps. :p

  12. Kurdor - July 2nd, 2008 @ 8:51 pm EDT

“and her animal symbol” I meant. ><

    I blame the internets.

  13. Tvae - July 2nd, 2008 @ 9:03 pm EDT

Snow - After an owl in the first book in the Redwall series.
Ice - Just cause it’s cool, and close to snow.
    Crystal - See above reason.
    Hikari - Light in Japanese
    Shiroi - White in Japanese

Also, of those said, I like Evenstar, especially if you’re trying for something from fantasy.

  14. cloudmonkey - July 3rd, 2008 @ 1:01 am EDT

    Sleet

  15. Niabi - July 3rd, 2008 @ 2:08 am EDT

Another name I could suggest is Zenith which means “the highest northern point”. A good, strong name for a white owl.

  16. Noba - July 3rd, 2008 @ 9:30 am EDT

For a female, “Selene” is the name of a goddess(may have actually been a titaness) of the moon. Owls being nocturnal hunters and all, it seems to fit. A long time ago I used to have an owl by that name.

  17. Nanase - July 3rd, 2008 @ 10:39 am EDT

A pretty female name for a white pet is ‘Koyuki’ (meaning ‘little snow’)

  18. Joonces - July 3rd, 2008 @ 12:35 pm EDT

I named my owl Archimedes. But I definitely saw him as male. Owls are great pets.

I like other peoples suggestions of:
    Artemis
    Selene
    Evenstar

    Tough choices!!

  19. Yvelle - July 3rd, 2008 @ 1:27 pm EDT

I always liked the name Nichodemus for an owl’s name, but that’s definately not female. How about Celestial (as in “belonging to the heavens”) or just Celest? I like someone else’s suggestion of Selene. Very simular to that, is Serene or Serenity.

I love the white owls. Very good pet choice! :)

  20. Choo - July 3rd, 2008 @ 3:07 pm EDT

Curse Blizz for blocking out Hedwig!
I feel like sueing them now, but I won’t.
I’m trying to levle one of the snowy owls from Winterspring but I’ve already picked a name for my lovely pet. =)
I ended up calling her Powder like powdery snow.

I also like Kaepora Gaebora, but the name is too long, even without the space. You can end up naming her “Kaepora” OR “Gaebora” but it doesn’t really fit considering Kaepora Gaebora is a boy, first of all and second, Kaepora Gaebora is brown. But true to the fact, he is a owl! Just a annoying one. :3

  21. Choo - July 3rd, 2008 @ 3:55 pm EDT

This is a add-on to my above post for I just thought of it.

Try and find a name that means “Snow Spirit” or “White Spirit” of some sorts.
It would probably fit perfectly with a snowy colored owl. :3

  22. Wolfington - July 3rd, 2008 @ 11:21 pm EDT

Hedgwig? (I don’t know how to spell it…)
    Artemis is good..

    Or..
    Niveos — snowy
I had a white owl named Niveos ^^ Kinda matches your name too. (both start with Niv at least..)

Now all you need is a white hyena ^^

  23. fatman - July 5th, 2008 @ 12:55 am EDT

    Evenstar is good.

    Try:

    1> Wisdom
    2> Thought
    3> Silence

  24. Toomoonz - July 5th, 2008 @ 2:10 am EDT

Namastae, it goes along with your Eastern naming theme, it pretty much means hello, goodbye, and great to see you in the most purest and transcendental form. Or you could name him after a friend from wow who went off to war to help his brothers and sisters in the armed forces… your call.
    -Toomoonz and Drockan

  25. Brian - July 5th, 2008 @ 8:58 am EDT

most pets ,depending on who owns them can take a name directly from greek myth!
if the owl is in your opinion female name it artemis and a boy could be apollo

  26. Senitel - July 6th, 2008 @ 2:15 pm EDT

Olm (cause that is his name b4 u tame him XD)
    Snow as previously
Since the owl u got is part of the cenarion circle how bout Elune, shes the moon goddess and the moon is white ain’t it?
Bjarn (no clue where i got that is just kinda popped into my mind)

  27. Senitel - July 6th, 2008 @ 2:16 pm EDT

    Previously stated*

  28. Ghostlyarrow - July 8th, 2008 @ 1:45 pm EDT

    Since it’s white, and it’s an owl… something ghostly…
    “Spirit” would be good.
But what I really like is “Ancestor”.

  29. Yossir (w/ Torc & Ravioli) - July 9th, 2008 @ 7:41 pm EDT

How did you get a picture of both your pets?

  30. jua0z - August 10th, 2008 @ 1:36 pm EDT

i know its not as ‘unique’ as the other names suggested, but i think Mac is a pretty good name for your owl

  31. Phoel - October 14th, 2008 @ 5:30 pm EDT

Bjarn is the name of the white bear that roams the area south or Iron Forge. Nice bear to tame if you’re into white, but the name is already there.

I have the same owl skin but from Winterspring. Also got Shy-Rotam from the same area. I like Koyuki if yours is a she.
