Saturday was the big day for hunter news at Blizzard’s World Wide Invitational in Paris, but now that the event is over we’ve got some reports filtering in from players who attended the event and went hands-on with Wrath of the Lich King.
One hunter (who wishes to remain nameless) wrote me today to let me know what he found:
I attended WWI and was able to check WotLK on the Demo Stations. I just wanted to tell that at least one new Pet Family will be around: Moths. I found some tameable ones in Borean Tundra. Their skin was red-ish. They had an ability called “Serenity Dust”. Level 70/71 Crabs could also be found. They have an ability called “Pin”. Their skin was the usual sand/beige-ish.
Moths! Amazing! And only one expansion late. *grin*
If anyone else out there was able to attend the WWI and check out the state of the hunter, please drop me a line and let me know what you found.
ZOMG! CRABS and a FAMILY SKILL!!!
I’ve been waiting since beta for that.
A revolution in diversity pets is coming…
All hunters rejoice!
Moths…. um….. really?
Not for nothing but.. crap. We’re probably only getting two or three new familys and one is Moths?
That’s ….. severely disappointing. I mean… Moths? *shakes head* Not that flappy pets aren’t annoying enough all on their own but…. another flappy, … moth?
Man they better have Wolverines and crap…. if all we get is moths I’m gonna be PISSED.
I guess Moths are better than….. um…. well I can’t think of anything Moths would be better than. That’s gonna take up residence on the bottom of the list of ‘will never tame’ pets for me…
I’m all for diversity, but… “killer attack lvl 70-80 Moths?” Pardon me while I die of yawning mixed with laughter at the concept. “Oh no the moths are coming the moths are coming! Hide your clothes! Break out the moth balls”
pretty sure the moth will have some sort of status affecting dust ability and maybe a poison mist or something. sure a lvl 80 moth with just the abilities that are in the game NOW would be boring but im guessing they intend that to be a utility/debuff type pet.
Totally naming my moth Butterfree.
moths, and crabs with powers? this is cool.
Unless you team up with a fire mage, you know how moths are around flames. :)
I’m not saying there’s ____noone____ that would use them. But I’ve played wow for over a year now and I can count the number of people I’ve seen with crab pets on one hand and have fingers left over. Bats too…. arn’t moths just more of the same?
And yes I’ve seen the 3 or 4 cloud type pet skills leaked. I think that’ll get them a bit more play but still. Hunters don’t usually get their pets for that sort of thing.
I really hope the big bad new exciting pet of the expansion isn’t a frakin’ moth.
Personally, I think Hunters should be able to tame ANY beast in
the game. Unless there was a Lore reason why a certain specie could
not be, it makes no sense why I can’t tame Giraffes, Zebras, Moths,
Grubs, etc.
Well, tbqh, I bet most pets that are unusual for Hunters to have will become VERY popular in WotLK, especially for Beastmasters. I mean, pet talent trees? Crabs, turtles, bears, even croclisks with a Tanking spec as a BM Hunter? That’s gonna be insane! Just imagine: Hunter pets MTing for 5 mans in Northrend! I KNOW I have a lot of Beastmasters drooling right now.
PepsiJedi quotes …
“Man they better have Wolverines and crap…. if all we get is moths I’m gonna be PISSED.”
“I’m all for diversity, but… “killer attack lvl 70-80 Moths?” Pardon me while I die of yawning mixed with laughter at the concept. “Oh no the moths are coming the moths are coming! Hide your clothes! Break out the moth balls!”
… Couldn’t have said it better myself!
Whats wrong with moths? I think they are a very pretty pet, and would be relaxing. They were tameable when they first came around in TBC, but got cut. Odd that sporebats didn’t, when they suffered from the same lack of skills.
Pepsijedi, I don’t think you understand the storm coming fully. IF Blizzard goes through with this massive undertaking of pethood, then every pet will have its own place, and that place will be right where the hunter wants it to be. The trees speak for themselves: Tanking, DPS, and utility. Now, IF I am reading this right then each tree will teach the pets a different line of skills and abilities, meaning that each family of pets will bring to bear its own blend of stomple to the party. I harbor no massive hopes that each and every skill will be unique: I fully expect to see a lot of the skills do the same thing, only with different names. But if this level of sheer pet LOVE makes it to live, we may no longer have laughable pet families. Might wanna think twice before laughing at moths, lest you find yourself with a face full of wing blast.
And I think utlity will focus mainly on slows, stuns, and knock back attacks, as well as disarms and such. That being said, the mysterious supplier of Manias info mentioned that taming those two pets brought about those pet skills. If I had to wager, I’d say that the whole pet talent concept is in mid-making phase. We’ve seen rank one of some fairly impressive skills from various places, after all, but no pet talent info has been uncovered.
Finally, something curious. If pet skill points are gone, then how are we going to rank up our pets individual skills? Will speccing deeper give them to us, or will we learn them from pet trainers? My money is on the second. Learn it from talents, then learn additional ranks from the trainer, like regular abilities.
DIBS ON CALLING MINE MOTHRA!
To those that are doing pre-emptive dishing on the moths, wait till WLK. Crazy things could happen like, say what if the moth became THE min/max pet of choice?
enh, just saying don’t berate till we see what crosses the finish line.
Actually if the pet had fangs and claws I’m sure it’d be a lil more attractive to some folk – moths and crabs are at the lower end of the fierce scale, usually. But look at it this way – they’re not going to bring out all the new hotness at this show. They want to have some critters waiting in the wings to surprise people with. So if this is as “unexciting” as it gets – not a big deal. And honestly, how can you people feeling let down not see the potential of Mothra jokes? Geez, is only Maevet up on the great Godzilla fu possible here?! I for one am going to be taming a moth just to check out what the new skill is like – even if I don’t need to learn it. (I’ll probably name mine Gamera.)
What I’m amused by was that just a few weeks ago I was mentioning to someone in Terokkar “Isn’t it odd that there’re all these giant moths all over the game and they can’t be tamed…but there are moth non combat pets?” Plus it makes sense – after all, hunters can tame spiders.
Besides if they’d shown anything remotely cat, wolf or bearish just as many people would be immediately saying “yawn, we’ve seen that before!”
moths… actually, when playing through the BC content for the first time recently i thought the moths looked very cool. sadly untamable, but still.
my only problem is, wouldn’t the thing just fly off and flutter around the nearest lightsource? rubbish.
I think alot of people misunderstand (or are too deep in dream land) on the whole pet talent tree thing. My gorilla did pet tank BF at level, but Ramps didn’t work so good because of the mobility needed on the last boss. Blizzard is making a new tank class, (Death Knight) and I doubt tanking tree pets will get so much love nobody needs player tanks. Tank pet’s skills will likely be designed for the solo or small party questing. Damage tree pets will be for pvp/raids. Utility tree pets will prob become the most demanded for 5-10man for added control/debuffs etc.
Every hunter will need one of each and will have just enough slots to do just that.
Although I do hope they give us a 4th slot just to have one free to experiment with. “My Spider has [Web Encase], but maybe I’d prefer a spore bat’s [Blinding Spore Cloud]” or “My Bat has [Fearful Screech] but I’d like to see how a Owl’s [Talon Grasp] is disarming.”
Again, I personally think most groups will be looking for hunters with utility pets, perhaps more than even a straight damage pet. When seeking groups it may very well be more about the pet more than the hunter. “LF1M Hunter with util moth or sporebat only …. pst if interested”
Another reason I think utility pets will be the emphasis in WotLK is because we won’t have to worry with our shot rotations anymore. What will we be doing instead? We will be micro managing our pets.
I’d take a moth. I’m for bugs of all kinds.
I’m going to have to agree with Palladiamors here about moths. Even though they may not be as “ferocious” as other pets, they look absolutely incredible. Have you ever seen those blue moths flying around in Netherstorm and even on Bloodmyst Island? If moths become tameable in the next expansion, they would easily be the best looking pets hands-down.
It would be really sad if the shimmery dust around the moths’ wings went away when tamed though. umm… but what do moths eat..? I’m imagining clicking Feed Pet, then my bag to open for food…and Oops! Mothra has eaten Imbued Netherweave Bag.
Moths . . . okay, you can have Mothera, but can I tame a Devilsaur to be Godzilla?
Crocolisk I love those! I would love for them to tank…but I can’t stand the hissing it drives me nuts! Blizz stop the hissing PLEASE MAKE IT STOP! MAKE IT STOP! They would be a wonderful tanking family if they weren’t so freaking annoying.
Oh I get it about the talent trees, but I agree that they will be smaller scale. A pet tank is not going to be waltzing Matilda in Kara on it’s own. It’ll be a tank for soloing (( kinda like what people use pets for 99.9% of the time while soloing)) the DPS will be more for raiding and dungeon or soloing if you’re good. The utility will have (( pardon the phrasing)) The junk that didn’t fit directly into dps or tank. It’ll be the weird little third tree that, just like predicted above, you’d need to be the 3rd or more hunter in the group to need a pet to do those abilitys.
My complaint wasn’t about the pet trees, I get it. Pets will be more buildable but will roughly have the same skills. I get it.
Mine was. “Ohhhh killer attack moths. Scaaaaaaarrrrry.” *snort* They’re butterflys with furry faces. I’m just not scared of butterflys. You sneeze at um hard and their wings snap and they die. That coupled with the fact they’re another flappy pet (( which are universally annoying as 40 hells)) just doesn’t thrill me. Flappy pets have a way of getting in the way, flapping. Filling your screen with the wing animation and making it hard to target and what not.
I think the moths will fall into the exact same place as the bats do now. Neat in concept but give me something that can kill and looks wicked, instead of just flaps around annoying like.
How many people do you see running around Org with Bats? Ever? In over a year of playing I might have seen 5? And one or two of those was probably the result of a wand around halloween when you can turn into one. How many crabs have you seen running around with people? I’ve seen TWO hunters with crabs in over a year of play.
Yes I understand with the talent trees the pets with out good skills and what not will come more to the fore, but I honestly don’t belive we’re going to see a dramatic upswing of cosmetic pets flying around.
More over, more than once people have said Moths were “Supposed” to be tameable in BC. So this isn’t really a revolutionary move. They’ve had over a year to fix what ever bug (ha ha) that kept them from being in BC, and now they have. Poof fixed. So we’re getting a BC tameable critter late. not a LK Tameable critter early.
As an aside… the mothra joke is already played out… and the thread is only 22 posts long… in game it’s going to be incredibly old. incredibly quick.
well, i quite frankly think that the moths will be good for instances (along with sporebats, maybe share same skills?) because they may be like a pet pally, ever think of THAT? after all, the moths in terrokar near that cenarion building did make a contagious aura that reduces stats, what if they have buff ones too? what if they have a “reduces threat” or “increases spell damage by 4″ or “all enemies within 10 yards become infected with…” i think moths will be great pets.
Well that’s neat, I’m really not gonna tame a Moth…ever…to be honest. When I want some big and in your face, it won’t be a Moth. I hope those strange wolves that got leaked months earlier are tameable. That’s what I want to tame.
Cool to know a new pet, but uh Moths just aren’t gonna be what I’ll tame. Plus, I hate bugs >=o
Zomfg. I guess I’m really weird but… I was /so/ disappointed when you couldn’t tame those absolutely gorgeous blue moths from the Draenei starting area. Or the brilliant colored one in Netherstorm. Yay! Dude. I’d wander around with one just for the pretty.
From the class panel Q&A (which most missed because the it wasn’t scheduled at the time it started):
Since quite a lot of mobs are still running around called “[PH] TASK: 4357824″ (placeholders), they’re not at this stage yet. Given the way they develop the game, I’d take anything currently in the alpha with a “pinch of salt”. Likely it is just an idea they are playing with, and may or may not make the release.
Actually, Pepsijedi, you’re probably talking to a lot of people who have seen or remember Attack of the Killer Tomatos. There is nothing as innocuous as a tomato, and still, we are afraid that they will attack and kill us in our sleep.
Heck, some of the most dangerous things in the world have neither fangs nor claws.
I’m still crossing my fingers that, one day, non-scorpid Silithids will be tamable…
A man can dream, darn it!!!!11!
if you think moths are a bad pet choice, here’s somthing to help change your mind. I think that serenity dust ability is going to be similar to the pacifing dust ability from the ones in terrokar, which basicly locks out most of your opponent’s abilities. pretty useful for getting a shot with a long cast time off, or just getting away
And actually as far as being scared of pets…wait…people are actually scared by pets? I mean, I’ve been killed off by hunters in bg and arenas, had the occasional “ugh a spider” moment – but I don’t look at pets and think “oooo, scary!” Nice coloration, maybe or nice animation – but never “eek, am skeered o yr pet! must run frm epix look o it!!!”
But maybe that’s just me.
And actually I saw several bats this week. One more than one server.
Bah, should be ON more than one server.
“I’m still crossing my fingers that, one day, non-scorpid Silithids will be tamable…”
YES
I want a wasp.
http://wotlkwiki.info/index.php/Hunter Has some information, about possible pet abilities. Look under “Pets”, it has “Serenity Dust” and “Pin” descriptions.
Basalisks should be tameable and should have somesort of freezing/paralyzing ability
Yes! A family skill for my crab Buster! I was hoping crabs would get an attack with bleed damage, but Pin sounds very interesting.
Now that I’ve thought about it more, though, there will probably be a lot of hunters at least trying out crabs for Pin. I liked being unique. :(
Well, that’s just peachy. I have a ghost wolf in one slot, my standard “been-with-me-forever” white lion in another… I guess I get to level to 80, tame everything for new pet abilities, and then go back and level a moth ten levels.
Blizzard not giving us new stable slots is the dumbest restriction in the entire game, and I’m counting the thirty-minute cooldown on Shield Wall in this.
letgs petition Blizz to give us more Stable Slots, and to rename “Abandon Pet” to “release” or “let go”. abandon sounds so cruel and negligent…
Hmm, a couple thoughts:
1. If Bliz is going to go in depth enough to let you customize pet talents, why can’t they make armor customization for pets? I think kit would be so epic to gear up my cat.
2. Turtles are going to make a comeback. Shell shield already makes them great tanks for soloing and with a talent tree for them, you would be easily able to makje up for their damage and speed loss.
