Name That Pet: Kerub’s Serpent

Kerub with her serpentFinal Name: Níðhöggr

Another Name That Pet request from an RP realm, and this one is from Sentinels, where I keep my Alliance characters. But Kerub is Horde, an Orc hunter with a serpent that needs a name!

Kerub writes (in character):

I was tracking beasts down that day, learning what I could of them, feeding them ’til their bellies were full to show my appreciation of them, then letting them loose to run back with their kin in the wild. I wandered all over Azeroth, and the scattered lands of Outlands. There was one last skill to learn normally held by some snakes in Shadowmoon.

But my life mate and friend Ozrac said, “No Kerub, here, let me take you somewhere special.”

Well he was fierce as he was handsome, and well I cant say no to a handsome orc such as he, master of elements, to take me some where special, and he added “I also have a picnic basket full of ale and rare meats.” No way I could say no.

He took me through Stranglethorn past the cats that many flower-smelling night elves favor. He pointed at one panther in particular and said “That’s it.”

I scowled at him.

He laughed, his teeth glinting white. “No, it’s a joke, dear. Not a cat. Those are for night elves. I have something else. Something more to your liking, and it will match your well-scarred skin tone.”

I blushed, “Well lead on then, Shaman!”

He took me into a thicket past some goblins, up a hill past more cats, until the jungle opened to giant troll ruins. “Let me kill them for you, my dear. Their blood will decorate my hammer in honor!”

He waded through the trolls and fought them with honor and ferocity. It was turning out to be quite the romantic date! The trolls unhonorable blood spilled over the stairs and he said with a charming smile, “Lets go, my love, the way is clear.”

We walked inside to find more trolls and some blue-black serpents, but to the left to my surprise was one of the most beautiful serpents I had ever laid my eyes on. He looked fierce and aggressive. Ozrac pointed to the left. “That is the one that is for you! Isn’t he magnificent?”

“Yes,” I said with much enthusiasm!

“But first we must clear out a few of these trolls in our way. Shall I go first, or should first blood be yours?” I smiled. He did know his way to a lady’s heart.

I shot first and the fight was difficult, but we cleared the trolls. Blood, sweat all over us and the ground, and we fought together in love. What could be better!

We got to the snakes. There were three; I pulled and trapped the one that looked to be the strongest and the most fierce! While he was trapped we killed the others in another hard-won battle. Another trap and my quarry held fast! I started my words to the snake in its spirit language that we learned from the mighty noble Tauren, and soon he broke from his trap as my companion. I fed him ’til he was full and he was mine!

Ozrac looked at me, smiled and hugged me, covered in his own sweat and the blood of trolls. I smiled and kissed him on the cheek. “You make a girl happy.”

He smiled knowingly then pulled up a basket that smelled of meat. “Shall we have our lunch? There’s a nice spot over there …”

[end of story]

Sentinels is an RP server, so I’m looking for a suitable name maybe Trollish or Troll-like, or something that has more to do with his taming. I’m just slap out of names, though Oz did suggest I name any spitting snake ‘Johnson’ … it’s not really what I’m looking for.

Whew! That’s a great story. And a snake with that kind of backstory needs a special name. So what’ve ya got?

Oh! OH! I have this snake! (unfortunetely I still haven’t named him, but it’s great luck that someone is naming him now!!!)

Something like Suncrown, maybe in Trollish, but when I first saw someone with one, all I could think of was “jem” so maybe that in Trollish… To bad I don’t know trollish.

I take my troll (and troll pet) names from the loa, the vodou pantheon. A good name for a snake might be Dumballah Wedo, the serpent god. Ayida Wedo or Erzulie are also associated with serpents, but those are female names. Ogoun or Sobo Kessou are great warrior names.

  3. Sunflower - June 16th, 2008 @ 11:08 am EDT

I like the name Tezcacoatl…means snake king :)

First off, what a GREAT story!! =) Kudos on the time and effort put in to it!

Secondly, aren’t the flowers that NE’s sniff on orc graves? Hehe…I had to ;)

Lastly, than name. I’ve always like Quetzelquatal (I’m sure I butchered the spelling). May be too long, so Quetzel or something along those lines. The Mayan/Aztec/Incan cultures would have some great serpant related names, might be worth looking in to.

I think that is a great story! Well done! How about Tazazik? Im not good at naming snakes, but it sounds trollish to me, without using “‘”

Had one of those once. Named her Mertseger. Some egyptian goddess of death and flowers i think it was. Just remember she was associated with snakes.

I was actually going to suggest the Midgard(world) serpent, Jörmungandr to you Kerub. That is what I named mine after. Níðhöggr is actually a serpentine creature living under ground, feeding on the roots of Yggdrasill(world tree). Jörmungandr is the Midgard serpent, a gigantic, demigod sea-snake capable of wrapping itself all the way around the world. He and one of the most powerful norse gods, Thor, eventually fight to the death. Thor wins but also dies shortly after from the snake’s powerful venom.

Id have to say… As being a RPing hunter on Feathermoon i think having a good background pet story is important. Unfortunately im a night elf with the son of Bangalash. XD I named him Sargatogu. Now for a snake name i would say…. “Sempatoru” or “Kinatu”. The names i make up for my pets are all made up by me. If you can’t think of any -really- good names then try thinking up of your own names. I would suggest reading up on the Warcraft history, it has helped me a lot for thinking up on names.

  17. Tala - June 16th, 2008 @ 10:40 pm EDT

I think you should name it either Helgrind, which means ‘Gates of Death’, or Kazerian….That one is just a random name I like. :)

  18. Wykea - June 17th, 2008 @ 4:54 am EDT

    Kwyjibo.

Try Copperhead, because it matches the metallic coloring of your serpent.

  22. Angelakane - June 17th, 2008 @ 11:53 am EDT

I’ve never played on a RP-server so I don’t know much about the naming politic only that it’s not allowed to offence in any way. So I suggest Nagina from the Harry Potter books.

  23. noeyed - June 17th, 2008 @ 12:06 pm EDT

what would you name a Raveger then?

  24. noeyed - June 17th, 2008 @ 12:10 pm EDT

Ravager* And sorry for the D-post. But I’m really eager to name my pet, and I’m out of ideas….

  25. Petlover - June 17th, 2008 @ 12:18 pm EDT

I used to have this same snake. An old guild of mine ran ZG, and after we were done, I noticed there were a couple of snakes alive, so with the help of a couple guildies I tamed this beauty. Sadly, I no longer have him. But keeping with my food theme (hee hee) I named him Caramel because of his coloring. Afraid I don’t know any trollish names…though I do have a troll shaman named Vashira…maybe you could use that.

  26. Tahlian - June 17th, 2008 @ 1:08 pm EDT

    Let’s see….

From Egyptian mythology, there’s Apep the serpent.

From Kipling, there’s Kala Nag, which means “Black Snake,” as well as “Nag” and “Nagaina” from ‘Rikki-Tikki-Tavi.’

I like the idea of using the names of the Voodoo loa, if you can find one that suits you and your scaly friend.

  27. Niabi - June 17th, 2008 @ 9:04 pm EDT

I tried to find actual names of serpents from literature or mythology. These names, I think, most closely resemble the “trollish” theme you are requesting. I also provided the links for each name so you could research more into the meaning and story behind them.

    1. Uktena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horned_Serpent)

    2. Nehebkau (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehebkau)

    3. Ratumaibulu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratumaibulu)

    4. Renenutet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renenutet)

    5. Atum’Kaa (made this one up on my own, Atum is Egyptain and Kaa is from the smake in Disney’s “The Jungle Book”)

    6. Naja (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naja)

  28. Earthstomper - June 17th, 2008 @ 9:45 pm EDT

Heh funnily enough there is a good troll name mentioned in WoW.

Ula’tek the snakegoddess of the trolls.

Now I don’t know if your companion there is Ula’tek herself but I think it might be a good RP springboard as for how your snake earned such a prestigious name.

There’s some information about her on WoWWiki: http://www.wowwiki.com/Ula%27tek . They also have links within the article to other snake related troll gods. Worth a looksee. Hope this helps! :)

    Arbok!

  30. Nimizar - June 20th, 2008 @ 2:57 am EDT

Ouroboros is always an option when it comes to naming snakes…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros

  31. Shantanna - June 20th, 2008 @ 1:56 pm EDT

I once had a purple-pink snake which I named Azalea, but that won’t fit here. How about Burek? Your name backwards ;) Or maybe you could name him after one of the troll camps, like Tkashi or something…
    Great story, by the way!!

  32. Casdia - June 21st, 2008 @ 11:27 pm EDT

Sagendo: is the nameof one member of a fictional species of giant two-headed snake known as the Amphisbaena in the series being written by my friend. She is known to swallow immortals to punish them.
