Name That Pet: Wykea’s Scorpid

Wykea and ScorpidWykea, a young Tauren hunter from the RP realm of Kirin Tor, has asked for our help naming his pet scorpid, previously known as Death Flayer.

Stop by Kirin Tor server someday, and you might meet Wykea. A bit absentminded socially, this young bull nonetheless knows that focus is important in battle. But, like anyone, he has his quirks. He loves “collecting” unusual pets. Rare colors, odd behaviors, he loves them all, and is determined to find the perfect rare pet, even if it takes him to the ends of the world and back.

To this effort, while completing his rites of Hunter training in Thunder Bluff, Wykea caught wind of sightings of a rare black scorpid some called “Death Flayer” out in Durotar. Intrigued, he set out for Durotar, specifically to catch the rare animal. He ran for what seemed like days, until finally, he spotted the beast. Twice he failed to lure it to his side, but finally, he succeeded! Third time’s the charm!

But he knew that, while quite intimidating, such a name as “Death Flayer” was just a bit too ominous or his tastes. But, as absentminded as he was, he was utterly boggled on a suitable name for such an exotic creature…

((This is not the only “rare” creature I plan on Wykea obtaining - later, I’m aiming for one of the featherless green raptors, which I’ve already decided to name “Jadeclaw”.))

Death Flayer is one of my favorite scorpids, so I hope we can find a great name for Wykea’s new pet!

My brother had this one for a while, I don’t remember what he called his death flayer, but my suggestions are:
    Pinchy
    Redback
King (as in scorpion king) or Serket, if you want the name of the real pharoah scorpion king(s)
    Skorpios
Manticore (ok, the only part of a manticore that is scorpion is the tail — but still I like the name)
    Devil
    Armortail
    Fattail

    Slowdeath? sounds good i think

  3. Leuko - June 11th, 2008 @ 8:38 pm EDT

Kerub– I used to have a bright red spider named PainfulDeath. :) Right on!

    Wykea– Names:

    Fury
    Pox
    Pokey
    Bitsy

Someone on my server had the same pet (black scorp), but he named his IPinchButts. It always made me chuckle, but I don’t think it’d be appropriate for an RP server.

My old scorpid’s name was “Toxin.”

  5. hyena84 - June 11th, 2008 @ 9:03 pm EDT

i hear some (if not all) species of scorps in the real world glow under a black light.not sure if that helps any.i think the glowing scorpid blood item ingame is because of that…

  6. Wykea - June 11th, 2008 @ 10:08 pm EDT

hyena84: Indeed they do glow. In fact, the
    http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/skins/skin_scorpionskinblue.php
is the exact same fluorescent teal color that scorpions IRL glow in blacklight!

    GO KT! REPRESENT!

and as for names…the scorpid looks like a kind of lava-shelled creature to me, so the names I came up with reflect that.

Fireclaw, in a similar vein as Jadeclaw

Caldera/Caldero (calderas are basically big volcanic craters, like Yellowstone)

Volcanis (i may have to take this for my hunter….so if you ever see a red windserpent flying around KT named Volcanis, you’ll know it’s me.)

    uhhh

    Ruby or Rubin or Bloodscythe…

Telson is what a scorpion’s stinger is called. I’ve always thought that would be a good name for a scorpid.

Because scorpids seem rather graceful the way their claws sway back and forth, you might try something dance-related like Flamenco or maybe Castanets.

    Lilpincher

Scorpids are rough to name, I know when I was a very new hunter I had “death Flayer” for a short while and I struggled with a name for days.. I finally settled on Venom. I know, I know.. Sooo original.. But hey.. Give me a wolf or cat or even my current hunters Ravenger named Starfire and I got skills :P but I was young heh..

I vote for Caldera, It fits well :) Good Luck W.

    How about “Motley”?

  17. Arinde - June 12th, 2008 @ 1:28 pm EDT

I have had that one and called it Sting, not because of the singer but just because it is what they do :).

  18. Messyah - June 12th, 2008 @ 4:56 pm EDT

If you are a comic book fan, you should appreciate the name Stingpin, obvious a dirivitive of “Kingpin”

  19. Tribute - June 12th, 2008 @ 7:38 pm EDT

    Gangerine, Arsenik or Strictnyne…

    All deadly poisons.

  22. mandm413 - June 13th, 2008 @ 4:38 am EDT

I ran my dwarf at level 20 over to get that scorpid long long ago when he had a 1.? attack speed. I called him clawbaby, not sure if that name works for you but thanks for bringing back some fun memories.

  23. Kahlua - June 13th, 2008 @ 7:15 am EDT

Or keep it simple and name him Sting :)

  24. Boven - June 13th, 2008 @ 8:11 am EDT

When my hunter was a young’un, I tended to name pets based upon stuff they did. His pink tallstrider was (and still is) named Peck. He had a crab named Pinchy. Stuff like that. His first scorpid was named Stingy. After the fact, I realized that might be read by others that he was a miserly scorpid or something.

Fortunately, scorpids have other attributes that can be put into names:

    Sting (or variations of it)
    Pinchy
    Skitters
    Venom
Arthur or Arthro (playing off the fact scorpions are arthropods)
    Arach (as in arachnid)

  25. Mania - June 13th, 2008 @ 2:22 pm EDT

Stingy the Miserly Scorpid is great! Although perhaps not quite the tone Wykea was looking for. :>

As it happens, my first Alliance character to make it past level 10 had a black and red scorpid named Sting. It seems to be a popular choice.

  26. Wolfington - June 15th, 2008 @ 10:10 am EDT

    Volcana
    Volcanic
    Volcapinch
    Firestorm
    Acidfire

    BLackclaw
    Blackheart
    Acidiya

    Mustache
    Stache

    Have fun.

  27. Brecconary - June 16th, 2008 @ 2:16 am EDT

Oh man, how come no one suggested the best name ever?

    Fluffy!

  28. Ashataris - June 16th, 2008 @ 6:10 pm EDT

I named my crab chopstick, sounds silly i know but no one else has that name!!! I do like the name fluffy… But for your scorpid I vote Caldera….

  29. Cryptography - June 17th, 2008 @ 9:23 am EDT

A’a… a form of lava that is made of many very sharp rocks.. kind of prickly and sharp like your scorpid.

  30. mike - June 25th, 2008 @ 4:30 pm EDT

    Onyxfang

  31. Ghostlyarrow - July 8th, 2008 @ 10:22 pm EDT

I’m coming up with Silithid names…
    Creeper, Swarmer, Invader…
Or something with “Drone” in it, like those Hive Drones in the Silithid Hives: Onyxdrone, Stingdrone, what else.
