Help Needed: Gutripper

GutripperOver the past couple of months I’ve gotten several e-mails about some interesting behavior from Gutripper, the elite windroc and capstone of the Windroc Mastery quest line in Nagrand. Each time, I make a note on my to-do list to head out there and tame Gutripper myself to check her out. But so far I haven’t actually made it …

So I’d like your help. If you have tamed Gutripper or if you have any inclination to do so, I need to know more about the following:

  • According to Peloquin (and Kaz’kah the floor-sweeping owl), the tamed Gutripper has a strange habit of flying very low to the ground when following her hunter.
  • Torito from Cenarius tells me that: “Gutripper can fly” and “fight in the air against Nightvane or Onyxian in the second phase”. She can also apparently “jump from a tower in AV — no more stairs for this pet!”
  • And Ket Shi, who has been extremely helpful in keeping the Petopia database updated, has been looking at creatures like Gutripper and the Monstrous Kaliri who exhibit “true” flight and how that might affect tamed behavior. He writes: “Maybe it is possible she doesn’t really “fly” properly as to mess up the scripting, or has no one given her thorough examination?”

So … anyone here hunt with Gutripper? What can you tell us about her movement? Is it special and different? Does she tend to bug out?

  1. I don’t have Gutripper, but I have a bird I am not using. I will abandon that and try out Gutripper. Especially if it turns out it can fly from AV tower to AV tower. :D

  2. I heard from a guild-hunter that Gutripper doesnt have a persue-path like other pets, she ignores obstacles… might not be true, its some months since I was told that

  3. Randomly I only just saw the size bug with Gutripper on Quel’Danas recently – I know the bug has already been reported, but I really thought it was patched. I saw a hunter with a pet called Gutripper, looking just like Gutripper, but more to the point – the same size as Gutripper pre taming. (Husband has screenshots, will have to get those from him) After the hunter with him died and then respawned and revived his pet – the size was gone and the pet was normal sized again. The hunter was acting very strangely the whole time though, so we still think something odd was up there. (Hunter didn’t feign death when attacked by 3 mobs, kept meleeing even when the chance to used ranged was there – kinda odd in a lvl 70.) I know that this size bug is all over the place still – but I keep hearing about it more with Gutripper in the gossip – though this was the first time I’ve actually seen it happen. And of course this is probably just a different bug than the one you’re talking about, but I thought I’d toss it in anyway.

I have a couple of characters almost to the point of the Kill Gutripper quest – or I could just swing by his area and see if he’s acting oddly. I know that for a long time he would bug out and get stuck in the area and be unkillable – but I haven’t seen anyone on my server complain about that in Nagrand general chat of late, and in the past people would give a heads up there when it would happen. Thought that was also fixed in a recent patch, but my memory’s bad on patch notes.

Meanwhile I’d love to see screenshots and fraps of Gutripper fighting Nightbane in flight, not that such a thing couldn’t happen, but I’d love to see it! Not sure it would help in the fight all that much. The AV jump thing should be easy enough to test though. Looking forward to hunter reports on that.

  4. Sorry, duh, the only bug out you’re talking about is post taming.
I’ve killed Gutripper on so many alts that I’m still fixated on the “bugs out when attempted to kill” thing.

  5. I’m afraid to admit that I don’t pay any attention to owls of any kind. After Skettis I have a sort of grudge against them. I did try to tame Gutripper on more than one occassion, but she would always kill my pet and even killed me at least once (at level 70), so I gave up. I can’t say I’m too inclined to tame her now cause she looks too similar to my Dire Raven, but it would be interesting to see these bugs.

  6. Gutripper herself is an interesting tame. She is immune to frost and freezing traps, and hits hard, so living for the entire tame duration is an interseting little game in and of itself. She flies over an area in northwest Nagrand, lands and ‘walks’ back to close to the mountain path, then flies back. Considering going back and taming her now that I have better gear and ten thousand hit points…..

  7. Just tamed her and tried it out near Halaa, on the water eles under the bridge, if their close enough, she glides down the mountain side as if flying when going to attack! I’m gonna send you my screenies of it in a sec.

  8. I jumped out of the towers in Garadar and it followed the ramps down, i’m going to go try the water elementals and see what happens there

  9. I also went up to skettis and sent it after a flying bird, but it jsut gave chase on the ground, it did fly down to the elementals nearish halaa but Oz says that his birds go ‘fishing’ like that too when he plays his hunter so as far as i can tell its a regular bird . im going to aggro one then fear it, to see if it wont fly away with the bird after it

  10. when i feared the skettis bird and sent gutripper at it the feared bird stood there, and didnt really run … so unless some one else has other methods of testing im out of ideas

  11. I can verify that mine flies close to the ground. He actually has gotten stuck in a few places on Aldor Rise, where myself and other pets have no problems getting through…

I’ve used Eyes of the Beast, and my owl falls like any other pet off of the Rise ;) (was chasing a friend on her flying mount)

I will see if I can drag him in on an Instance, though the tanks hate owls (and its been a while since I visited Ony…)

Oh, and Palladiamors, I recommend popping around 14K health ;)

  12. Yeah, I tamed Gutripper and he seemed odd..He was in the ground..He was walking really slow, and when I took controll of him and jumped, he was flying!..At a very, very slow rate..I thought it was cool, but got rid of him when he began flying off cliffs to attack enemys..

  13. Actually my Frostsaber has started to jump with me down from stairs and ledges. I recently noticed this when grinding Ogres in Nagrand in the tunnels of the elite ogre Cho’nall (something something)…

  14. I’ve had Gutripper for some time. Specially in Azeroth, it flies very low and very SLOW. It often got behind and despawned when I was running around helping friends.

  15. Just tamed one today, it is flying slower and more graceful than normal owls and yes it is following me when i jump down things not just flying round them like other pets. It seems to glitch when this happens though like it gets stuck for a while but then catches up with me later. Pretty cool in some ways I guess but I think it is a glitch rather than a feature so Ive got a feeling it will be “fixed” soon enough. Think I’m going to get a white one and level it now :) that or the gold one from setthek.

  16. every so often my pets will jump down to a lower ledge with me.it doesnt seem to matter what species they are and its kinda random.its nice when they do that instead of trying to go around and aggroing half the area but it does seem rather glitchlike…

  17. I have a Gorilla that will jump off towers and off ledges with me, it doesn’t matter the hieght either though he takes fall damage with me. I thought maybe it was just something Blizzard did in the last patch as I wasn’t here when it was done and I havent gotten around to reading the notes.

  18. I have trachela and a dire raven as well as a ripfang, and the behaviour described here – jumping off ledges with me (as long as they’re not too steep), flying low occasionally, and falling behind to the point that they occasionally despawn (and I think I missed an aggro >_<) – happens to all 3 as of late… So I don;t think it’s specific to any one pet, though Gutripper might be exhibiting more of this.

  19. I am ‘Peloquin’ and sadly I have to say Kaz’kah the Low Flying Owl was released in order for me to tame a Dire Raven. It’s worth pointing out that the raven didnt exhibit any of this behaviour at all. However, I was unaware of the Nightbane thing. Does she pull aggro when she does that?

  20. Sorry can’t edit my comment but just an update: I re-tamed Gutripper.

This does seem to now be fixed. I thought she was still diving toward enemies, but this could be my imagination. I tried to replicate the screenshot I sent earlier, and to me it does seem she’s flying a little more normally.

For the ‘acid test’ I flew us both up to one of those floating rocks in nagrand, used eyes of the beast and flew her off the edge.

She plummetted to her doom. :(

Still a really nice pet though and fun to tame. Think I’ll keep her this time.

  21. this might have something to do with it. one thing i’ve picked up on while playing my hunter is when i walk off a ledge, my pets take the stairs, etc. if i jump down, they “jump” along following me. noticed this since the last patch… but i could be wrong or just coincidental.

  22. I had her at one time, and I can say that she did fly through the ground, so low sometimes that I couldn’t see her feet. I abandoned her after a while. (Thats all I noticed though)

  23. I’ve noticed the cliff jumping thing too with my pets. But it seems if I drop, they drop; if I jump, they go around. Though I did have a really weird (and inconventient) insident with a warp stalker. I was doing the netherwing quest to kill transporters while standing on one of the many floating rocks. I pulled the mob and as he was flying down, pretty close but not quite over the rock, my warp stalker ran to attack and ended up warping over the edge to his death. :( I managed to kill the guy alone, but it was really wierd at the time.

  24. I think this is true, what others have said about the de-spawning. Mine never used to, but my girlfriend her hunter has problems with her cat. It will fall behind and despawn randomly as well, never had this problem on my 70 hunter so far though. Don’t know about that other stuff though, good luck finding good info.

  25. Hi just an update, I released the gutripper and tamed an avian darkhawk, and the 2 owls animations for me are totaly different they also have different placements in height and distance from my character as well. Also this own seems to do the same as my wolf and run down things rather than drop down, though I am keen to see if jumping off things rather than dropping makes a difference, would be cool if it does :) would save some trouble now and again lol

  26. I tamed Gutripper last night to test this out… So far I haven’t been able to replicate any of these things.

  27. I really appreciate the work that everyone is putting into this! It’s not entirely clear to me what’s going on with Gutripper, but certainly this is a faster way to become confused than waiting for me to do it myself. *grin*

  28. I have gutripper, cat from darkshore and scorpion from shadowmoon. I have noticed with Gutripper and scorpion will not keep up with me while I run unless aspect of the pack on. My cat that I have had forever will keep up with me no matter the situation.

As for the following down ledges. The cat and scorpion never follow down they go around. Gutripper will usually follow if I jump off.

  29. Interesting. I have her (no not this bank alt, but my huntress :) )and have not seen any of this. Of course to be honest, I generally don’t watch for these kinds of things – I wouldn’t remember them from day to day anyway. She was a hard tame. Died a lot of times, till I got lucky and everything just clicked. Never had an owl before but I find her nice to use for soloing and daily’s.

  30. hi again, I guess this is a dead subject now…. :( Gutripper hit lvl 70 last night and I noticed yesterday (yuppers, wrote myself a note to look at her and see if she does odd things)that when she was 69, she was following me as I jumped down ledges, and slow and fly low and up, etc. But when she dinged 70, that stopped. She now hunts for a path down, keeps up with me and acts like a normal nerfed pet. Glad you are back, Mania :)
