Name That Pet: Coralei’s Tallstrider

Coralei and her unnamed pink tallstrider.Final name: Phoenicopter

Coralei, a young Blood Elf hunter from the Icecrown (PVE) realm, is looking for help finding the perfect name for her pet tallstrider.

I have been watching this section of your website since I stumbled upon it, I love reading everyone’s ideas! Now, I realize that someone has entered their pet just like mine, but I didn’t click with any of the suggestions, maybe after my story is heard they will be able to help me.

Now, I come to you in need of help! At level 10, I decided to take my Blood elf away from the beautiful woods of Eversong, and venture to the great plains of Mulgore to tame the pink flamingo, Mazzranache. He is the most unique beast in the game, and I had to have him! Just looking at him I can see personality. Well, needless to say, I am now level 40… and I cannot think of a name good enough to suit him! (I noticed many people consider this beast a girl for being pink I suppose, but I have always considered it a male … Anyway, I guess male or female names will do.) This being my first pet, I am going to keep him forever! I have never seen a level 70 Mazzranache. I get compliments and comments/questions about him all the time! But what to name him?

My game playing time is spent mostly solo, hence why I rolled a hunter. I have yet to find an easier class to solo with. But when I do run groups, I want my pet to be apart of the team, and stand out, with a name that is FUN, perhaps easy to say/read, and full of personality! I was thinking something along the lines of a famous flamingo (either a real one somewhere, or a cartoon character), I love European names, so maybe the word Flamingo in another language? Whatever, I am not picky, I am up for ANYTHING! SO let me have it!

I’m no so sure I would tell this crowd that I was up for anything, but … Well, let’s hear those suggestions!

ooo after you get it named (or before), stop by the wetlands and do the pet gender test.

  2. Firewing - June 2nd, 2008 @ 3:54 pm UTC

    yeah.

    But how about…

    Fandango
    Sunburn (cause they’re vibrant pink?)
    Mazza (lol)
    Ognimalf
    Jones

  3. Bobo & SgtPork - June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:00 pm UTC

My BE hunter, Roger, has this guy, named “Floyd.”
    “Pinky” or “Pinko”?
What about “Flamenco,” like the dance?

    I. Scientific Classification.
    A. Class Aves (birds).
    B. Order Ciconiiformes.
    So, maybe “Ciconi”?

    C. Family Phoenicopteridae.
Flamingos are the only members of the family Phoenicopteridae.
Last suggestion: “Phoenicopter,” but I forget if names are limited to 10 or 12 characters . . .

Whatever you choose, you’ve chosen a very handsome bird!

  4. Anders - June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:12 pm UTC

    Name it Mazzranache

    The easy and obvious choice

  5. Kurdor - June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:55 pm UTC

    …pet gender test?

Take some part of its anatomy and add a -y. Clearly the lazy way out.

    Beaky
    Necky
    Leggy
    Weird-wing-mounted-naily

    You get the idea.

  6. Wolfington - June 2nd, 2008 @ 4:57 pm UTC

I like simple(ish) names. Sarge (sargeant) is one of my fav’s, but, well, that might not fit for a pink bird. (It DOES fit, however, with a red hyena. <3 my Sarge…)

    How bout…
    Stilts (come on, TALLstrider…)
    yardbird ^^
    Plastic
    Tacky (you know it’s true)
Potato (because I am peeling potatos right now.)
    Soldiar
    Flowergirl

Not the BEST names, but I just can’t name things that are, well, pink.

  7. Shanrei - June 2nd, 2008 @ 7:26 pm UTC

call it SnuffleHuffle or something really cute, because thats what Mazz is! =D

  8. Deathris - June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:37 pm UTC

    How about:

    ColonelSanders
    Mullet
Plastic (what the cool yard ornaments are made of)
    Kitsch
Gnome or GardenGnome (another popular yard decoration)

and I like Yardbird from above.

  9. Leuko - June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:50 pm UTC

Ah, another pink one! My 2nd hunter tamed the grey/blue/red one. Fun and unique pet, especially at higher levels. :)

    Names:

    PeptoBismol
    Bubblegum
    HippieChick (doublemeaninglawl)

I named mine after a fruit, but I can’t think of any that’d remotely resemble the color of that bird. I dunno…

    Watermelon ?

  10. Hypnotic - June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:50 pm UTC

    Ok ok, here we go:
    Tobias
    Gabriel
    Coco
    Eco
    Jabberjaw
I also like the name Flapjack.
Or if you want something really crazy:
    Kiantoogoo

  11. Soweilu - June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:44 pm UTC

My Tauren hunter had this pet and the pet seemed kind of comical so named it Raspberry. But really wanted a lion so ditched it for the white lion.
Also maybe Strawberry or Fleur or Anthea which is to do with flowers.

  12. Darc - June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:09 pm UTC

“”ooo after you get it named (or before), stop by the wetlands and do the pet gender test.”"

What the? Pet gender test…? Is there such a thing? If so please tell me more, i’m very intrigued!

  13. Casdia - June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:20 pm UTC

    Crayola
    Cardigan
    Corsage
    Rosebud
    Romeo
    Othello
    Hamlet
    Mixen
    Remo

    Pink names:
    Fuscia
    Magenta
    Amaranth
    Carmine
    Cerise
    Coral

  14. hyena84 - June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:30 pm UTC

perhaps something else related to aquatic stones/jems/crafting materials since you have the word coral in your name?or sunburn.they remind me of sunburns with army boots and mowhawks…

to Darc: it involves going out to the shipwrecks in the wetlands and aggroing the undead mobs till they give the pet a specific debuff.this results in them changeing to an undead (forsaken) modle thats transparent.
the problem with the test is that it seems to be set to female by default for all beasts/pets except male lions and warlock imps.even male druids in animal forms are said to show as females…

  15. blah - June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:35 pm UTC

    Cassanova

  16. toque - June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:36 pm UTC

    pet gender test!

take the pet to wetlands, on the coast there is a ship with undead pirates. They cast a spell to turn you (and your pet) undead. Your pet will take the form of a male or female human undead. So that’s how you tell.

  17. cloudmonkey - June 2nd, 2008 @ 10:59 pm UTC

You said you think he’s be male. How about Chippendale after the male exotic dancers?

A couple more masculine names that might work:
    Pinkerton
    Jeaves

  18. Kerub - June 2nd, 2008 @ 11:32 pm UTC

My little girl named hers ” Tak ” from the little guy in the vidio game tak and lok its cute shot and easy to remember!

  19. Mania - June 2nd, 2008 @ 11:32 pm UTC

cloudmonkey: I accidentally deleted the comment where you asked me to let your comment through the spam filter, where it kept getting stuck, so the rest of this won’t make any sense to anyone but you or me. :> But there you are!

  20. Cobroso - June 2nd, 2008 @ 11:33 pm UTC

    thdmnflmngo LOL

  21. Bobo & SgtPork - June 3rd, 2008 @ 12:08 am UTC

If it was October, I’d suggest “Awareness”

  22. cloudmonkey - June 3rd, 2008 @ 12:08 am UTC

    Thanks, Mania!

One little correction of my entry: the final name should be Jeeves.

  23. Mazil - June 3rd, 2008 @ 12:52 am UTC

    Candy :)

  24. Darkbander - June 3rd, 2008 @ 12:58 am UTC

    MahnaMahna!

    Doo doo de doo doo!

  25. Tahlian - June 3rd, 2008 @ 1:10 am UTC

My Tauren huntress named her Mazzranache “Agador,” after Hank Azaria’s character in the movie “The Birdcage.”

A friend of mine did indeed use Fandango, which I’ve always liked.

Re: the “pet gender test” – it doesn’t work. I know this for a fact because in my mid-20′s, I had tamed and was using Humar the Pridelord, a very obviously male lion. When in the Wetlands working on that quest, the curse debuff turned him into a female undead. I think it’s set to that model by default for most – if not all – pets.

Screwy, yes, but what can ya do?

  26. Maree - June 3rd, 2008 @ 3:13 am UTC

Got a flamingo on one of my hunters as well; named him Soccothrates, after http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=20886

About its gender, I myself are pretty sure he’s a dude.
Here’s a quote from the quest Mazzranache: “As fortune would have it, while traveling across the plains, I encountered it, and it took a nasty bite from my shoulder. He was as terrible as my grandfather described”

If you want a female name anyways, I only got 1 thing to say. Barbie.

  27. Angelakane - June 3rd, 2008 @ 7:41 am UTC

    Rosie
    Tamarian
    Corola(like the car: Toyota Corola)
    Leethah(a) (leet hah(a))
    Akasaki
    Heart(y)
Azrael(ironic seeing as your tallstrider doesn’t look like an angel of death)
    Qtypi(e) (cutiepie)

Meh all I can think of atm

  28. Boven - June 3rd, 2008 @ 8:15 am UTC

When my hunter was level 10, I saw Mazzranache and ran right off to buy the next stable slot so I could tame him. He was the first of my pets to hit 70. Mine’s named Peck, since he seemed to do a lotta that while being tamed.

Anyway, some of the names that come to mind are:

    Rose
    Yardbird
    Rouge
Vice (as an obscure reference to Miami Vice)
    Coral
    Red
Scree (hey, that’s what he says when he attacks)

And since I can never resist showing it off, here’s some artwork that was done of my hunter ‘n his flamingo:

    http://img155.imageshack.us/my.php?image=mazzhunterok2.gif

  29. Messyah - June 3rd, 2008 @ 9:38 am UTC

    I suggest…

1.) Tuscadero (As in Pinky Tuscadero from Happy Days)

    2.) Bubblegum

3.) Corella (As in Corella DeVille from 101 Dalmations)

  30. Ket Shi - June 3rd, 2008 @ 10:43 am UTC

If you would count your tallstrider as a girl, I think that Rosa would be a cute name.

  31. Kahlua - June 3rd, 2008 @ 11:18 am UTC

    Candlyfloss

    Bublegum

i have mazzarache on my hunter also and named her Beakaboo ( play on peakaboo) i find that name really funny and have had many laugh in dungeons do to that name

    PinkyColada

  32. Yvelle - June 3rd, 2008 @ 11:49 am UTC

LOL, this post is perfectly timed. I was thinking of sending in a request for my tauren’s Mazzarache too. :P

I’m kinda liking Coral, so I’ll second that one. Are there any pink gemstones?

    Other suggestions-
    Pinky
Beauty (altho doesn’t really work for a male name)
    Sanders (as in Colonel Sanders)
    Screech or Screecher

  33. Ryno - June 3rd, 2008 @ 12:42 pm UTC

Quartz is sometimes pink, in terms of a mineral.

But the final name should have a -les ending, imo (Spazzles, Pinkles, etc).

  34. nobbie - June 3rd, 2008 @ 12:56 pm UTC

That’s simple: Rose, Rosemary or Rosa :)

  35. Verace - June 3rd, 2008 @ 1:50 pm UTC

Actually, the 101 Dalmations’ referenced name is “Cruella de Vil.” (not Corella)

  36. Coralei - June 3rd, 2008 @ 2:03 pm UTC

Wow, so many choices that I like more than I thought I would! You guys are great. Ok.. The ones that stuck out to me the most:

Phoenicopter (Thx for all that info Bobo!)
    Flamenco
    Chippendale (lol)

Maree – Thanks for that quote!! That pretty much sums it up in my eyes as well.

I also didn’t even realize my name had a gem in it, lol.. That would be too cool! To go with Coral or something…

So many CHOICES!!! Keep em coming I’ll decide by the end of the day hopefully. :D

  37. mazzranache - June 3rd, 2008 @ 2:13 pm UTC

ognimalf (flamingo backwards) or drib (bird backwards) maybe knip (pink backwards)

  38. Kiromi - June 3rd, 2008 @ 2:49 pm UTC

i say name it Hilton. I don’t know why but it seems funnyXD

  39. Mosseater - June 3rd, 2008 @ 2:50 pm UTC

I’ve tamed Maz twice now. Adorable.

I used the names Fernando and Ferdinand. They seemed to fit. Fernando is my favorite, though.

  40. Noba - June 3rd, 2008 @ 3:04 pm UTC

Boven- adorable drawing! i love the tauren’s expression.
hmm, names.. well, for the bright color perhaps Crayola. Valentine. Tropicana?
Other thoughts are of flamingos… Didn’t the beverly hill billies have a flamingo by their pool? I dont know if it had a name or not though. The game Donkey Kong Country had a flamingo boss named Necky.
A pink flamingo often represents vacations, so maybe something like Oasis, Paradise, Serene. One last thought, maybe Victoria, because of victoria’s secret’s ‘love pink’ thing theyre doing.

  41. Thranos - June 3rd, 2008 @ 4:20 pm UTC

Name him Harley, Tonka or Hemmi. I think that a tough name for a MALE Flamingo would great.

  42. Thranos - June 3rd, 2008 @ 4:22 pm UTC

    Another thought is LEGO.

  43. Wolfington - June 3rd, 2008 @ 4:36 pm UTC

    Boven — cuuute drawing!
    Lets see.. Thinking pink..
    Rose
    binkypinky (or Pinkybinky)
    Floral
War (’cause a pink tallstrider does NOT make you think about war.)

yeah, I still can’t think pink.
Hey, just thought of this — Name it “ThinkPink” ^^

  44. Shirubia - June 3rd, 2008 @ 6:39 pm UTC

Just keep the name Mazzranche on it :)

Or like a friend named his: ”GayPride”

  45. Ichigo - June 3rd, 2008 @ 6:53 pm UTC

I still think that the best name (and which is the name of mine) for the Pink Flamingo is Fabulous.

  46. hyena84 - June 3rd, 2008 @ 8:24 pm UTC

theres a jem tourmalin (i think i spelled that wrong) thats sometimes found colored like watermelon with one half of the crystal pink and the other half green.
theres unakite to.but thats more mossgreen with bits of white/clear and a rose pink/brick red in it.
there pink diamonds, rose zercon, star rubys, fire opals, and i cant think of anything else right now.
coral itself is more the skeletons of tiny aquatic animals then a true jem,but its still used in rl jewelcrafting.perhaps something pearl/aquatic related would be an interesting name option?or maybe a desert flower?some cacti have bright pink parts…
if you get a purple one later.theres a shell thats white and a LOVELY purple.(wampum?mom says its a cohog shell)its used in jewelry…

corse none of those really sound very masculine now that i think of it.every time i get one i consider it male to for some reason.great, now i wanna nother one…

  47. Mike O'Neal - June 3rd, 2008 @ 9:51 pm UTC

    ******Pet Gender Test********
Thank god i thought i was the only one who knew. All other hunters usually look at me and shrug it off.
Through my years of huntering every animal as others have said turn out to be female, save some examples Sian Rotam (spawned white lion, sorry if i named its mate instead) King Bangalash is a male though both tethis and the panther are both females. It seems like only those animals directly referred to as males via quests or lore determines the males even things such as Patriarchs are still females heh. So since i always have standard pets they’re all female names.

  48. Moonwolf - June 3rd, 2008 @ 10:49 pm UTC

Here are some alaskan native (Tlingit) words

    cháas’: salmon, (humpy, pink) (n)
    xeitl: thunderbird (n)
núkt: male or dusky grouse (n)

Have fun…I love comeing up with odd names for my pets too. Got a warp stalker named Kek (its one of the egyptian gods of chaos)

  49. Avary - June 4th, 2008 @ 4:20 am UTC

    Butch.

  50. Steadfast - June 4th, 2008 @ 5:03 am UTC

We have a pink Mazzeranche on the Sha’tar called…

    Lilythepink

  51. JakofBlaides - June 4th, 2008 @ 9:58 am UTC

possibly something ironic. Old Blue, or Pheonix

  52. Beastkeepa - June 4th, 2008 @ 10:27 am UTC

hmmm if only gnomes could be hunters …. ^^

    Takky (tacky)
    Strawbewwy (just sounded cute)
    Frommyyard
or just carry over the name Mazzranache, if you do the quest in Bloodhoof the mob itself has a pretty cool background

  53. Asariah - June 4th, 2008 @ 11:22 am UTC

I don’t know why it came to mind, but:

    Bubbalicious or Bubbavicious :D

    Like the gum!

    <3

  54. Mosshoof - June 4th, 2008 @ 12:13 pm UTC

    Placido

Like Placido Flamingo on Sesame Street.

  55. Sarai - June 4th, 2008 @ 12:47 pm UTC

I have him on my lowbie hunter. Named him….PinkChicken :P

  56. Volcan - June 4th, 2008 @ 1:34 pm UTC

I have a level 67 Mazzranache, and my whole guild knows him. I could barely find a member of my guild that doesnt know who my “Snappah” is ^^

Many people also call him “Pink Floyd”

Chewgummy might also fit his colour, in my opinion

  57. Coralei - June 4th, 2008 @ 1:44 pm UTC

Oh gosh, this was harder than I thought! BUT I made a decision….

    Final name:

    Phoenicopter

YOU GUYS ROCK!!!! These suggestions are definitely going to turnover to any other pet I get… There were a few that I just LOVE, I wish I could name him more than once LOL!

  58. Boven - June 4th, 2008 @ 2:26 pm UTC

Coarlei, here’s to hoping that you and Phoenicopter will be together to 70 and beyond. Tallstriders may not be the greatest endgame pets, but I still bring Peck out now and then when defending Crossroads or just to show him off in town. When he was my first pet to hit 70, he went into the battlegrounds with me and was nicknamed the Flamingo of Death.

Just to give you an idea how much he’ll grow by the time he hits 70, here’s another picture. That’s level 70 Peck on the right and a level 10 Mazzranache who’d just been tamed next to him.

    http://img505.imageshack.us/my.php?image=2pecksyp2.jpg

  59. Mr. Perfect - June 4th, 2008 @ 4:23 pm UTC

Just throwing it out there, but Mazzranche is a male. If you do the one Tauren starting quest you’ll get a little bit of back story on him.

  60. Mania - June 4th, 2008 @ 7:30 pm UTC

Thanks for letting us help, Coralei. :> I’ve updated the top of the post with your choice.

  61. Tempric - June 4th, 2008 @ 11:00 pm UTC

I know you already decided, but I like the name Turbo for a tallstrider. It works for boars, too.

  62. Coralei - June 5th, 2008 @ 2:43 am UTC

Thanks Mania!!! I couldn’t have ever picked that name without you guys. tee hee hee.. Thanks again!

  63. Petlover - June 5th, 2008 @ 11:06 pm UTC

Great name. This bird was also my very first pet (sadly, I no longer have him). He is the one who started my whole “naming pets after food” thing. I named him/her PinkLemonade. :D

  64. Yvelle - June 6th, 2008 @ 1:36 pm UTC

Boven – Thanks for sharing the pic of the 70th and 10th lev Mazzranches! They’re so cute when they’re tiny, especially next to the huge taurens! XD

  65. Nathanial Beil - June 6th, 2008 @ 4:48 pm UTC

I had Mazzranche on a low lvl hunter before. I named mine “Birdo” after the pick Dino on Mario that spit eggs. I liked the name and others commented me on it.

  66. CGelose - June 7th, 2008 @ 1:22 pm UTC

I happen to like some name from different mythologies.

    Myan Mythology has
Camulatz – A bird that ate the heads of the first men.

    Chinese Mythology
Sachamo – large bird with horse legs, commonly found in the eastern side of the United States. Controls minds, and has razor sharped talons, made for killing. Likes to feed on fish, and bears.

    Buddhist mythology
Garuda – enormous predatory birds with intelligence and social organization.

    Aztec Mythology
Quetzalcoatl – a god of wind, creativity, and fertility, frequently depicted as a Feathered Serpent.

Just a few thoughts. Every once and a while you run into someone in the game who gets your pet’s name (I’m not sure if that’s good or just a true geek test) but it is funny when it happens.

  67. Valias - August 11th, 2008 @ 6:53 pm UTC

    flossie
That is the most many name, inspiring far in the hearts of men
    holy crap…

    its flossie…

    RUN!!!
