Name That Pet: Celestarry’s Blackwind Sabercat

Celestarry with CatFinal Name: Elendil

Celestarry is a level 70 Night Elf hunter with a stable full of cats. Her latest find, a Blackwind Sabercat from the Skethyl Mountains, is in need of a name! Celestarry writes:

Celestarry is my first toon to hit 70. As a Night Elf hunter, I love spending time with my pets (all cats). I am especially fond of trekking around looking for interesting places to visit in Azeroth. I love having the companionship and the protection. My cats have saved my butt more than a few times. So I treat my cats with respect and affection.

One of my dear WOW friends, who knew I love cats, told me about the elusive Blackwind Sabercat found up in the Skethyl Mountains between Terokkar Forest and Shadowmoon Valley. I took my new flying mount on a scouting expedition in search of the Blackwind Sabercat. I finally located a pocket of them, stabled my current cat, flew back and tamed one of these beautiful beasts for myself. What fun!

So now I am in search for an awesome name for him. I am looking for a name that represents his beauty, mystery, power and nobility. I named my first cat, a Nightsaber, Comet to be in sync with my celestial name. My second cat is a beautiful Frostsaber Pride Watcher. I named her Glacier as suggested by someone who said looking at my cat was like staring into the blueness of a glacier (how poetic!). I loved that imagery and I would love a name like that for my Blackwind Sabercat.

Let’s see … beauty, mystery, power and nobility … and poetic imagery. Well, we’ll see what we can do!

    Hum, I think maybe:

    Titan
    Nightshade
    Polaris
Reversi (You know, since he is a reversed white tiger?)

    My two cents!

Sabrefang, thats what i usually name my cats.

Blackice, dunno just seems cool and well black is for the black and ice for the white.

Maybe Orion. in mythology he was a hunter, killed by artemis and made into a constellation.. so it has to do with stars and huners >.>; Alternatively you could simply go with Artemis, who was a huntress also.
Selene is a name i like using for owls, as it means moon goddess, but it could easily fit such a cat as well.
Or..here’s some random name parts to mix and match. In elvish “Elen” is star, “mor” is black, “vanim” beauty, “val” power. So you could make up combinations like Mor’elen black star, Valimor, and so on..

I love Orion, that seems to fit so well. Selene also fits well, but I vote Orion.

I just jumble a bunch of letter together, i came up with Nyuki, Nakree, Ryshe, and more. (What i do is start with jumbles like this “ghwifgyhwiez” and take out letters that dont dont fit, or rearrange them to make them fit, to make a name out of that jumble could be maybe, Gyzif) Thats my thought at least, hope it helps.

hmm, i go for StripeFang, in a different language, but or just Stripefang
(sorry for the lame name, never tamed a cat)

“Spot” would be too cutesy . . . I’ve got a troll alt that went to Darkshore and tamed one of these at low level, named him “CrosseyedTom” . . .

“Bái Hǔ” is the Chinese tiger constellation, the Japanese is “Byakko,” Korean: “Baek-ho,” Vietnamese: “Bạch Hổ.” It’s a white tiger, tho. Don’t seem to be able to find the name of the Chinese Tiger God . . .

How about Obsidian? It’s a black mineral that occasionally has white flecks in it, called “snowflake obsidian”.

  9. cloudmonkey - May 30th, 2008 @ 9:07 pm UTC

That’s one of my favorite cat skins. My first character, a night elf named Leaf, tamed one of the Darkshore cats with the same skin and named it Briar.

    Other possible names:
    Moonlight
    Moonshadow
    Dapple

I’d just call it sable myself sounds pretty decent to me

  11. cyrus - May 31st, 2008 @ 1:11 pm UTC

    I suggest: Imperator

  12. Celestarry - May 31st, 2008 @ 2:33 pm UTC

Great suggestions so far …. I especially like Blackice, Orion, Byakko, Obsidian, Moonshadow, Moonlight and Imperator …. so you can see I am having a difficult time deciding … I will let you know what I decide …

    What about Fidchell? =D

  14. Shirubia - May 31st, 2008 @ 4:39 pm UTC

Well, just as some info, the Pet of the guy at the top of the frostsaber rock in Winterspring, its a Predewatcher named Glacier :)

For the name, I personally like ”Isis”, that’s the name of the Egypt mother-goddess… and the name of the cat of the Catwoman from the Batman series.
Other names could be Aurora (The white stripes kinda remind me to the northern lights) or Nightslayer (Yes, like the Rogue t1)

  15. Kerub - May 31st, 2008 @ 8:39 pm UTC

well on the Egyptian theme Sekhmet was a goddess of among many other things.. lions

  17. Guthorm - June 1st, 2008 @ 1:00 am UTC

i named my humar the pridelord Onyx, which is a black type of quartz i belive

  18. Meurdok - June 1st, 2008 @ 1:49 am UTC

Ryuk is a Shinigami, or god of death in the Death Note series. Dunno, kinda sounds fitting. :]

  19. Morgrimsson - June 1st, 2008 @ 4:45 am UTC

Asterion was the name of the minotaur in the legend of Theseus and the Minotaur and the name actually means “Ruler of the Stars.” A fitting name for a powerful, mysterious beast and companion to a hunter with a celestial name :). I’ll try to think of some others for you – good luck and good hunting!

  20. Celestarry - June 1st, 2008 @ 5:33 am UTC

WOW – what awesome suggestions – Asterion, “Ruler of the Stars” is very intriguing as is Onyx and Oblivion

Will let you know what I decide – but you guys are great – I have told several people about this site.

    Thanks for your thoughtful suggetions

Speaking of “Asterion”, Anesterian Sunstrider was the last king of Quel’thalas and father of Kael’thas Sunstrider. Now that’s a fitting name for a kitty if there ever was, named after a king ;)

  22. Regis - June 1st, 2008 @ 9:30 am UTC

Argh, that’s supposed to be Anasterian

  23. Torta - June 1st, 2008 @ 2:34 pm UTC

    Dice

  24. Emowin - June 1st, 2008 @ 2:43 pm UTC

I like what they named him in the frist place
    “Blackwind”

  25. Rabidsponge - June 1st, 2008 @ 11:01 pm UTC

  26. Kahlua - June 2nd, 2008 @ 6:44 am UTC

Celeste, a little play on your own name

    Heavenly

    Auberon, king of the faires

Nostariel, means noble king in elvish

Rhavaniel, means wild one in elvish

    Shantih, means peace in Latin

Vardainel, is an Exalted goddess of the elven kind

  27. darager - June 2nd, 2008 @ 8:52 pm UTC

to go with Meurdok just the name shinigami sounds pretty cool..just got into deathnote myself but anyway um:

    Saber
Moonkin (might confuse a druid or two)
    Swiftnight

or back on deathnote, there is a charcter by the name of “Light”kinda cool name since the cat itself is dark
    well thats my input

  28. Soweilu - June 2nd, 2008 @ 9:49 pm UTC

If I had that black tiger I’d probably name him Galaxy.

  29. Kahlua - June 4th, 2008 @ 4:22 am UTC

Just thougth of a simple but, what i think good name
    Roary :)

  30. Bunkey The Monkey - June 4th, 2008 @ 1:55 pm UTC

For some reason, your cat looks like blackvelvet to me….the contrast of the white stripes on black fur.

Moonshine would be an amussing name that plays off of your name 8)

Celestialroar would be another play off of your name.

Lastly, your picture gives the illusion of dusk or nighttime, so how about nightshade or nightwind…something along those lines.

  31. Celestarry - June 9th, 2008 @ 12:18 pm UTC

Thanks again for all the great suggestions. I had a difficult time deciding which one to use.

The final choices were among Mor’elen, BlackIce, Obsidian, Orion and Asterion.

I decided it would go with an elvish name and so was going to use Mor’elen. However when I tried to enter that name, it was rejected – I am guessing that the apostrophe was not allowed.

So the name I did finally chose for my Blackwind Sabercat was Elendil – which is Elvish for “Star Friend” – which I thought was very fitting. It is also a name that comes from my favorite books – the Lord of the Rings series.

So my cat is now named Elendil. Thanks again for all the help here and good hunting to you all !
