Name That Pet: Corynthian’s Cat

Corynthian and CatFinal Name: Yukionna

I have to admit: the pure white Frostsabers of Winterspring have always been some of my favorite cats.

So I’m pleased that Messyah (frequent commenter here and also the blogger behind WoW Jones) has written in looking for name suggestions for the newest pet of his Tauren hunter Corynthian.

Read on for his great back story!

After what seemed to be a lifetime of traversing the plains of Mulgore, the Sands of the Barrens, the lush jungles of Feralas, and so many other utopias of Nature, a chill rose up Coynthian’s spine as his hooves set foot in the frosty snow of Winterspring. The trees were lush with snow-covered leaves, the ground was exceptionally hard and laden with wispy trails of drifting snow. He could sense the many new creatures to discover… to hunt. Something else called to him upon the wind. Something mysteriously wicked and beautiful.

As the creatures grew more powerful and more menacing, so did grow the skills and ambition of the prominent Tauren Hunter. Fighting through the Furblog and Yeti, the fragile yet deadly Chimera and the bears and other menacing inhabitants of this beautiful land, this thing continued to call upon his attention with a constant haunt. The winds grew colder the further he travelled north, but he continued on through the blistering air.

As he reached the the northern-most part of the trail, just beyond the icy-blue mist stood a strange formation of rock and snow. It was a sloped rock, very large in size with a slight curve at the front. It was as if the very ground was standing tall and proud. Suddenly, a cracking sound snapped his attention away from the natural wonder. His keen eyesight revealed something… a prowling beast approaches and his trusty friend Kermit was not by his side.

Quietly, Corynthian set a trap for this mysterious beast. After fine preparation, the ritual for taming began and out from the prowl came a beautiful cat, white as the driven snow. She charged the chanting hunter in a defensive rage, but as she approached him the trap was sprung. He continued to chant his soothing words to the primal beauty as she lay motionless in his trap. The ice barrier that held her at bay broke free, and just as this happen the ritual ended. His mystical words in Taurahe soothed her natural fury, setting her at ease of his presence, no longer seeing him as a threat. He knelt down and fed her a piece of cured fish from his bag.

This was the force that called him, that weighed heavy on his mind while taking each step through the Winterspring snow. She called to him, perhaps in hopes to prey on his warm flesh, but time has told a different tale. This white beauty sought adventure as her chosen hunter always has, and together, they will explore the many lands that lie ahead. They are one now and in unison, they walk the future’s path.

I’m afraid it’s going to take a really special name to measure up to that. But I know you guys can do it! *grin*

[Later]

Well, that didn’t take long at all! A lot of us were quite taken with the name Yukionna — and so was Messyah! He sent along a picture of his character Corynthian with his newly-named cat.

First thing that came to mind, and relates to the story well I think … “Menace”

  2. Crimsontusk - May 26th, 2008 @ 2:59 pm EDT

Articuno, FrostWhisker, Tundracat (you know like Thunder Cats- the show =) )

  3. Ametrine - May 26th, 2008 @ 3:26 pm EDT

Coming out from the snow to prey on those that seek to tame her, and falling in love with them instead of claiming their lives…

Yukionna. The snow-spirit of Japanese mythology that would claim the souls of men who died from cold. There is no better name.

  4. Casdia - May 26th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm EDT

Shanaiyu is what comes to mind. It has no meaning that I know, it just popped into my head.

  5. Xable - May 26th, 2008 @ 5:01 pm EDT

name has to have 2 parts, first part should be Ice, Frost, Snow, etc and last part claw, bite, tooth.

    Ex: Frostbite

I completely second the idea of Yukionna as a name for such a beauty. I always favored the solid white cats of Winterspring myself but, when I found Rak’shiri on my hunter at level 57 all changed and I sadly, docked my level 57 solid white for the beautiful Rak’shiri.

Though Rak had a bit of a ’sex’ change and was named into the name of Long, following after my love for the game Bloody Roar and my love for the character Long the Tiger in it. It is amusing how… when I am on my hunter and I tick someone off they go out and tame one of the purple sabers and name it Shenlong just to show HEY we know who you got your name from!

Aside from Yukionna I would suggest a couple others that I see suiting such a pretty feline

Jadis, named so after the White Witch of Narnia. I think it suits this lovely cat as well, more so because of how she lured her prey in and yet failed to do anything but become a loyal pet by his side.

  7. Ametrine - May 26th, 2008 @ 7:21 pm EDT

Jadis? Damn, I was gonna suggest that one too, not just Yukionna, but I couldn’t think of the White Witch’s given name for the life of me.

Now I like Jadis better. Hell, I wanna name a child that, not just a game pet.

Hmm, lemme think. Roma comes to mind because it’s pretty. But why not something like Rasha or if you wanted a longer version of that: Rashaviji. Kipcha, Larka (names from a book called The Sight) seem to fit.

    Shiro ~ japanese for “white”
    Icicle
Talah ~ Darnassian/Thalassian for “death”(I know you are a Tauren but well it seems like a Tauren name too=P)
    Mu’sha(or Musha) ~ Taur-ahe for “the moon”

Also great background story and please let us know what you decide

  18. Featherskiss - May 27th, 2008 @ 12:42 pm EDT

Yukionna is the most stunning name so far for the beauties of winterspring. Good choice on this lovely to accompany you on your many hunts. Good luck and Good hunting.

  19. Silinvhine - May 27th, 2008 @ 4:10 pm EDT

Luna - Moon, color of it, short and graceful.
Whisper - stealthed and secretive. Keeping prowl?
Shiver - you have to admit its witty IE: Shiver hits you for 40 points of damage.

  20. Danifae - May 27th, 2008 @ 4:54 pm EDT

    I really like Yukionna.

Another idea: Snowdrift, since you mentioned drifting snow in your background :-)
    Or perhaps: Twillight

  21. Elyas - May 27th, 2008 @ 5:58 pm EDT

I hav to agree Yukionna is a very nice fit.

Another option is Skadi (sometimes spelt Skathi), who is the norse goddess of winter, sometimes also said to be the goddess of the hunt.

“She is definitely not a Goddess who will take any crap from her followers. Like winter, she can be harsh and unforgiving, or gentle and beautiful, depending on the weather/her mood.” - Quotation from

    hmmm, link didn’t work, the above quote is from this page;

  23. Oturiel - May 27th, 2008 @ 6:23 pm EDT

I rather like the intrigue of the original calling…

How about Mystique, Siren, Augury (as she was the answer to the unknown question), or Kismet (fate)?

  24. Firewing - May 27th, 2008 @ 6:34 pm EDT

Lure, Fantasy, Prophecy, Trance. Trance is actually good. =)

    Gypsy! /pats self on back

  25. Polashuzz - May 27th, 2008 @ 8:17 pm EDT

    Lasercat!!!

  26. Sasha - May 28th, 2008 @ 12:20 am EDT

“Yukionna. The snow-spirit of Japanese mythology that would claim the souls of men who died from cold. There is no better name.”

    Well said!

  27. Guthorm - May 28th, 2008 @ 1:08 am EDT

    Jadis Ftw lol

  28. Stephf - May 28th, 2008 @ 1:46 am EDT

    Artic?

    Seems nice…

  29. Wolf68 - May 28th, 2008 @ 5:26 am EDT

Xable already suggested Frostbite, what seems to be an obvious name for a white cat from Winterspring (besides, that name was the winner of a contest I ran good two years ago to find a name for my cat).

Do you know the goddess Auril from AD&D? She is also known as the Frostmaiden and Icedawn.

  30. Birdsoong - May 28th, 2008 @ 7:33 am EDT

Yukionna seams perfect but if you like something else…

    Pearl (White, Precious, Beautifull)

  31. Axlrose - May 28th, 2008 @ 9:35 am EDT

Bastia, Quite appropriate as a variant of Bast, Egyptian Cat God.

  32. Kerub - May 28th, 2008 @ 3:02 pm EDT

Pearl would be a lovely name for a cat!

  33. Mania - May 28th, 2008 @ 3:50 pm EDT

Messyah let me know that he’s chosen Yukionna — and he sent a pic of his character Corynthian with his newly-named cat, which I added to the post above. Thanks, everyon!
