Name That Pet: Caelima’s Bat

Caelima with her new bat.A young and adventurous Blood Elf hunter named Caelima is looking for some advice naming her new bat. Caelima writes:

Recently I decided that I was going to go with a flying pet and not an owl. So after two or three days of carefully weighing the options between Carrion Bird and Bat I choose bat. So I got a few higher level friends to take me into RFK. I was hoping to find and tame the Blind Hunter but no such luck so I got a regular Kraul Bat.

The type of name I am looking for is something that is serious, possibly based on mythology or the meaning of the name. I do not play on a RP server but I do like a keep a back story for my toon. Caelima is a young Blood Elf hunter. She remembers the day her father and 3 brothers went off to fight the Scrouge and never returned. She remembers the feeling when the Sunwell was destroyed and every day after that. She always had a great knowledge of animals and a love for them. So she choose to become a hunter when she became of age and to ensure her people’s survival and rise to power once more. Caelima is a strong-willed Blood Elf woman with ideas of her own and a knack for getting herself into trouble.

My play style is simple, I’m normally the send pet in auto fire and keep at a range type. There are times though when I love to go in with my two weapons and melee the bugger out of things. Thank you for this. I really have trouble coming up with names for my pets.

We are glad to help! So what’s a appropriate name for this young Blood Elf’s bat?

My personal favorite name for a bat is Vlad. Just seems kind of bat-ish to me. Or maybe Stella,Luna, StellaLuna, or something like that (reference to the children’s book about a bat Stella Luna)

    screama

My ZG bat is named Guano, Always thought that was a clever name for a bat.

I like Vlad as well, since Vlad the Impaler was the name for the real Count Dracula, it invokes the image of a vampire and has a sort of gothic feel associated with it that fits well with a bat

I’ve always thought bats should have time-related names for some reason, so I was thinking Epoch or Elapse. I spotted another hunter with Blind Hunter once and he had named him Beta.

I think it is awesome that you take such a great and personal interest in something such as the name of your pet. I do too.
It is really hard to come up with a name that isn’t common, as well as, being personally reflective.
I have 9 chars on one realm and play them all actively, I have a hunter who has 2 pets and I have a personal zoo of pets here at home.
Personally with all my pets, in~game and in~life, I have found that it is best not to rush a name. Spend time with and getting to know your pet and their individual talents and personalities.
I now have 24 house cats and they all perfect fitting names. It just takes time. Good Luck

When it comes to bats, I think of Dracula and all of the chars in the movies.
Interview with a Vampire or Braum Stroker’s Dracula would be a good place to look, maybe.
    Again, good luck.

Mythology-wise isn’t many bat-gods I’m aware of but there are two Mayan ones I know of. Zotz is the one I’d go with, he’s the god of caverns and bats. Then there is Camazotz who was an early cult-worshiped, evil semi-bat god. Mayan myths tell of this beast being defeated, so I am guessing they whipped out this cult themselves.

    We like the name Needle.

  11. Bobo & SgtPork - May 24th, 2008 @ 9:02 am EDT

This is more of a funny name, but what about “Belfry”?

  12. Caelima - May 24th, 2008 @ 9:41 am EDT

Foresti, Thanks for those suggestions I really do like them. I just have to choose between the two, I had thought about Robin (as in robin from batman). I thought that would be kinda funny myself but not sure how many people would have gotten the reference.

Skreeaweh - thats how the bats screech sound to me

  14. Ahran - May 24th, 2008 @ 1:10 pm EDT

I am still thinking of a name to my ghost saber. It does matter how I name it and Bob just didnt please me enough.

When I look at flying pets I like to think about their element. Due to the fact, that they fly or ” glide through the wind “, I would call it Zephyr. Zephyr is the Greek god of the west wind. I have a wind serpent with that name, and I think it fits just perfectly into its theme.

Going through mythology, there are three names I like to use, if I want to show the power of my pet. For a Big brute, that does not fly and have no connection with the Sea, I call it Behemoth (The worlds largest creature in the book of job) If it lives in the sea or have connections with it, I call it Leviathan (the biggest creature in the sea).

Now for a flying creature I call it: Ziz
The Ziz is a giant bird in Jewish mythology, said to be large enough to be able to block out the sun with its wingspan.

    Hope it helps you somehow

    good luck with your pet

I suggest Blood, Foulwing or something like Nightshadow (was the first thing that came to my mind when I thought of a giant bat silhouette against the night sky).

  16. Xable - May 24th, 2008 @ 8:21 pm EDT

    Name him Guano

    (cookie if u understand why)

if you don’t, well its Bat Poo

  17. Kerub - May 24th, 2008 @ 8:37 pm EDT

Dracula (which means “Son of the Dragon”)
his own countrymen he was Vlad The Impaler, Vlad Die Tepes (pronounced Tee-pish)
the Turks call him Kaziglu Bey, or ‘the Impaler Prince. …

KazigluBey would be my choice for a bat

  18. Hypnotic - May 25th, 2008 @ 12:49 am EDT

    Quijibo — just because.

  19. Fireshade - May 25th, 2008 @ 2:57 am EDT

How about Modi the Norse god of warriors (Berserkers in particular)I think that would fit well if you are a BM spec. and use beastial wrath.

  20. Kualus - May 25th, 2008 @ 4:02 am EDT

Well, I like the names Camazotz, the bat god in maya mythology and Khorne, the the Blood God from Warhammer, for a bat pet, but that’s my opinion, though :-). Well, hope you find a nice name for your bat :-)!

  21. Korzak - May 25th, 2008 @ 11:58 am EDT

I like something related to the idea of the Sunwell, but memorializing the loss of it. The call of “Remember the Sunwell!” rings in my ears whenever I talk to Blood Elf NPC’s.

However, since bats are dark, especially that model, how about Eclipse?

  22. nobbie - May 26th, 2008 @ 6:53 am EDT

There’s a children book from German author Otfried Preussler, which tells the story of a young boy who becomes the apprentice of a dark sorcerer living in a mill. At the end of his education, he can finally beat his evil master and free his girlfriend as well as his comrades.

The name of that boy is “Krabat”, so I would name that Kraul Bat “Krabat” :)

  23. Syrelil-Sentinels - May 26th, 2008 @ 11:03 am EDT

Blindeye. It’s what I name every bat of mine. 0o

  24. Drakkena - May 26th, 2008 @ 5:21 pm EDT

I’m not sure if they are avaliable names but if you want to go with the notable type of name I would suggest one of the names of the Named Bats in game. Such as

    Duskwing
    Ressan
    or Shadikith

You could also use Jeklik (High Priestess from ZG, and controller of bats) as a name as well if you wish to go for something more… ‘god/goddess’ like x3

    I’ve always for some odd reason named my bats, when I tamed them after certain things that seem to click for them *shrugs* It all really depends, such as when I tamed a Eastern Plaguebat I named it Plague ^^;

  25. Pyranadil - May 27th, 2008 @ 7:53 am EDT

    name Him Sonar =D

  26. Selcarea - May 27th, 2008 @ 11:58 am EDT

    BloodLust
    Rabies
    Magenta

    good luck with name!

  27. Stephf - May 28th, 2008 @ 1:45 am EDT

    Flappy!

…How did that come to mind?

  28. Messyah - May 28th, 2008 @ 11:56 am EDT

    I have two suggestions…

    1. Chocula after Count Chocula, of course.

    2. Ping which is the term used for the blips on Radar/Sonar, which is how bats see/hear.

  29. Arezi - May 28th, 2008 @ 1:25 pm EDT

I like when people such as us search for the perfect name for our toon pets, because really, they are so much more than that. After all, what would the many BM hunters be without them?
I renamed Humar the Pridelord, Azizi, and theres a story behind it (besides rhyming with my hunter’s name :P). I left Humar’s name tag blank for a long time before finally stumbling over the perfect name. Since most RL lions reside in Africa, I picked an African name. Azizi translates to “Precious One.” I find this to be a perfect name for a BM hunter’s pet!

    Nosferatu (vampire).
If you want female, Bathory (real-life countess who was drinking blood and bathing herself in it because she believed it would garnt her eternal youth, at least I think so).
