I’m an Odd Hunter
Last night my husband and I went to a small send-off for a friend who is moving to Oregon. One of our friend’s friends was wearing a J!nx rogue shirt, so the conversation quickly turned to WoW. The rogue wandered off after a bit, but I was left talking to another guy, a friendly survival hunter who does a lot of raiding. He’d heard of Petopia so I got to show off a bit. (I love that.)
It was nice talking to another hunter. But I think I puzzled him a bit also. “Do you raid?” he asked. And I said no. “Well, do you PvP?” And I said no. “What do you do?” And I tried to explain how I like to play, which is strictly solo and involves a lot of random research and sounds fairly pointless to most players, I know. Thankfully it was loud and there was beer and I think I managed not to sound too crazy.
But at the end of the evening, as we were headed out, he pulled me aside with a serious look on his face.
“So, I have to know,” he said.
“Yes?”
“When you log into WoW …”
“Yes?”
“What do you do?”

Well, you, Manias, exist on another plane of existence than the rest of us mortals. If any of us were to discover what you do do, our heads would explode.
I thought I was the only hunter who’d rather solo than raid…
I don’t raid. Or do instances. I grind rep (10 exalted so far, working on 3 more) and do dailies so I can afford to collect JC recipes. :) But I do occasionally hit the battlegrounds.
What you do is have fun =P
I grind rep, farm non-combat pets, look for fun and rare pets(<3 Petopia), solo, is survival, has pets without growl, farm money, get drunk and STILL have fun ^_^
3 cheers to Mania for not being like the rest of us
Heh.
That’s pretty funny.
I don’t have the time to sit down and do an instance usually (though it was nice of blizzard to shorten the outland ones) much less raid on a schedule. Maybe after the kids are grown there will be time but right now WOW is what I do in my spare time and with a family I don’t have much and it isn’t consistant. I do love to PVP in the bgs though.
LMAO
I know a guy with a rogue T-shirt….
omg he goes to my school and he looks all weird like a rogue,,, once i saw him wearing that shirt i just called him a geek and he laughed..ahh
i love WoW people…
I love this blog i’ve been reading it ever since my school blocked petopia, the WoW community site, and wowwiki
Your interesting Hunter talks are what motivated me to level a Hunter Mania…
and now i have a 43 hunter on Detheroc and i oughta tell you hunter is the right class for me
^.^
Well I want to raid but can never find the time to finish any instance let alone a raid so I PvP a lot but I do enjoy taming beasts! Call me crazy for taming hellish things like Deathskitter then abandoning him. I like going through that much hated process and then doing it again. But I mostly PvP.
I play the same way that you do, Mania. When someone asks me what I “do” in the game, I’m usually a smart ass and say, “I have fun.” :D
as for a hunter, petopia helps me alot, so in all honestly, someone has to help us hunters in need, so we dont get stuck with the wrong pet and die all the time. gl soloing mania.
Back in my college years, I played EverQuest and was a member of a hard-core raiding guild. I will never be that involved in a MMORPG ever again. I love that I can log into WoW and just…play. Play how you want to Mania, and be glad WoW is a game that lets you do that.
Like you, I would not be considered a “serious” player. I much prefer solo. I soured on BG’s long ago and I really don’t like putting up with the greed and attitudes that many players have in instances. I am not in pursuit of the perfect weapon or the best armor, instead I love to adventure, explore and interact. I have two high level characters (1 horde and 1 alliance) and I help my guildmates and anyone else who needs it. I have a great time!
Lol sounds like me… i do random stuff ill grind rep or do dailys .. pvp once in a while but i get bored… i like exploring places like hyjal CoT if airport whatever …ill fly radomly around or play hide and seek with guild members.. i only raid when a guild is looking for 1 or 2 more people and ask me specificly to join them.. but even then i have only been on a few raids
heh that’s pretty good Mania. Much like when I tried to explain many many years ago to some folks (over a period of 10 years, that included my own mother) what I ate because I was a vegatarian.
Well, I don’t eat:
beef, fish, pork, meat in general.
well, what DO you eat. ‘everything else’ :)
and STILL folks would ask, but what do you EAT. you HAVE to eat meat, right?
well, I do now, but not from pressure, mostly from laziness, but it was amusing trying to explain what other edibles there are in the world beyond a hamburger.
indeed, you stand as a guiding light for we who do not PvP, BG, RAID, or any other group required efforts. Sure, pain sometimes to get stuff you’d like to get (trying to get someone to show up so you can free the mate on the road to neutral with the netherdrakes can be a LONG wait. but then, so is earning 5k for the rediculous costs to learn to ride).
good story. thanks.
It’s not that outrageous. With a game world as large as WoW, exploration is half the fun. As a hunter with a pet, it’s fairly easy to do too.
im quite fond of just seeing how far i can get in an instance with just my pet.i think iv only been on a whole 2,maybe 3 raids,in the 2+ years iv been playing wow…
*Chuckles* Looks like they beat me to it. You enjoy the game for what it is, Mania. A game. You don’t need heavy gear to prove that you’ve been some place. Your sense of satisfaction comes more in discovery, both of abilities and such, and in mechanics. Nothing wrong with that. Don’t let some one brow beat you into thinking thats a bad thing. I, and I’ll wager a lot of people who read your blog, respect and like that about you. Do your thing, Mania. Let everyone else do theirs, and don’t let what anyone else says or think about you bother you or change one thing about you. Nuff said.
Sounds like me. I dislike PVP and hate battlegrounds. What I love is exploring and interacting with the environment. I’m one of those who tries to do every single quest in an area before I move on. (Well, at least the first time through!) I enjoy taking my time and having fun.
As in real life one finds only after speaking up that there are many all simular. I too am an odd hunter…only lvl 61 – the comming of age my guild always says. But have no interest in raids or BG’s. I enjoy helping others in the game more than completing my own quests. I just love the exploration, challange and total interaction with others in the game. I have 3 odd hunters…2 alliance and 1 horde. “Cheers” as the dwarfs say, “to the odd hunters in WoW”
I am a lvl 70 tauren hunter on the server Staghelm, i am the exact way, i love just exploring the wilderness and finding new things i can do. im not to fond of PVP but i do have a few pieces of PVP gear. I am the guild leader of a AWESOME guild and we are currently working on Raiding, but im not really hardcore about it. more or less for the guildies who want some gear lol. My guild is set up for those who want to level up and have friends to spend time with and talk to on WoW. All higher ranking members are screened for those who really do helping there fellow man (or Cow, troll, dead guy, steroids abuser, or future fashion designer lol) My guilds name is and if you are looking for a nice friendly guild with a huge surplus of hunters, you can check us out lol. oops sorry didnt mean to advertise for the guild, but anyway. there are alot of us that are like you :) keep up the good work and you are not alone
I also love to solo. I mostly solo or duo with my wife and occasionally group up with real-life friends for a 5-person instance.
I was disappointed that Blizzard nerfed some of the outdoor elite mobs like Old Sooty and the elder saltwater crocolisks. I enjoyed testing myself to see at how low a level I could kill them.
I’d love to see challenging instances for just solos or just duos that have loot and rewards comparable to those of 5-person and higher instances. I’d really love to see some unique pets only available in such instances.
You’re not the only one, as you can see from all the replies. I don’t do PvP or Battlegrounds (never even visited one). I don’t raid, I only do instances I can two-”man” with a friend. Mostly I either solo or play with this friend (we got a whole bunch of alts by now ;) or I’ll be fiddling with perfecting my addons…
I think we must be glad WoW actyually allows us to play like that. =)
I play the game in a very similar way as well.
I enjoy playing many different characters and seeing what each class has to offer, trying to get tradeskills up (I have a character for each tradeskill at 375, except blacksmithing), playing the AH (the “people pay *that much* for my stuff? Wow!” effect), doing the occasional reputation grind (as long as they don’t involve instances). One of my characters got a netherdrake mount yesterday – the hard part being getting a group for that showstopper quest, Zuluhed the whacked. I really hope that any WotLK reputation grinds that are promoting solo play are not going to have some showstopper 5-man quest thrown in the middle (like the netherwing quests now).
I have a simillar point of view at WoW as you. I do pointless things. Yes i PvP, raid, and all that stuff a little. But those things are not that interesting for me. I go fishing, i often just sit in Thunder bluff talking to my guild for hours, we play hide and seek, and all that random stuff. I like this way of WoW a lot more that those pros that get 30000 kills on their chars in a few weeks, get full t6 in a while and that. That has no point, thats not fun. I play WoW to get to talk with friendly guild community. And even better, i brush up my English here. So be sure you are not the only guy here who likes such a way of nonsense wow
I’ve been playing since WoW launched, and two days ago scored my first PvP kill… leading my friends to ask what I’d been doing all these years. I told them I’d been seeing the world :)
I don’t raid… or pvp… I play alts… lots and LOTS of alts ;)
Whatever it is you do all day on wow, we love you for it!!! you’ve made this amazing website and compiled so much useful information, i’m sure others wouldnt have the patience to get even just one pet family done. We all owe you for your hard work! :) besides, its a game, its fun to just do whatever you want. also ive heard that too much raiding eventually becomes like a horrible chore that youre always stuck with.. hehe, luckily my guild and i are too big of sissies for the raids, so we will just occasionally go to kara for a good buttkicking contest. and no, we usually dont supply the foot!
I play solo 99.99% of the time so add me to the “odd” list.
I can only play for 2 hours a day, and I can only log on after 10pm uk time, so as you can imagine I never get to raid :)
I do the odd instance, am getting into PvP and run around a lot doing as many quests as I can find. I wish I had the patience to grind rep. I’m thinking of levelling up a brand new hunter on a PvP realm just to see what my tolerance level is like :)
Love the site Mania. Thanks a lot :) :)
Q: What do you do?
A: I hunt.
I too, normally do soloing. Some other players think I’m odd because I’m mostly speced in survival and instead of using my bow, I commonly use my sword/daggers. I went into a kara instance and did my usual technique of using melee-when suddenly another player said “A melee hunter?!” He didn’t seem too happy since I was the only hunter in the group. A fellow hunter in my guild once dubbed me the “Hunter That’s A Warrior Wannabe” :)
What do you do? – heh what don’t you do for the Hunter community and its pets?
You’ve only created the most awesome database for Hunter pets and created an awesome blog to follow to boot – not only do you have fun – you help us have fun too!
Thanks for what you “do”.
Your “oddity,” as you describe it, is what endeared me to you. I had been using Petopia as a reference for some time and figured the person behind it must really be passionate about pets. There is no way this person would have any other time to do anything ingame except for playing with, researching, and testing hunter pets.
When I saw that you had a blog, I subscribed without reading a single post. I knew I’d love what you had to say… this player passionate about pets and having their own kind of fun in Azeroth.
Your “oddity” is normal for a lot of your readers.
I often interrupt criticism of other players in global chat channels and support them with “play the game your way.” Who cares what anyone who is not paying my fees thinks!
I hate pve. I don’t like arena but play the minimum 10 games to collect gear.
I like to bg and level unusual pets to 70 and then discard and level another even though it drives me crazy! Have even leveled the same pet to 70 more than once. Have 2 70 hunters. Horde of course
Demand more pet slots every day!
Agree with what everyone has said – just wanted to add – your post and the comments here make me feel a lot less alone in what I enjoy in the game too! I raid, pvp and instance a bit – but mostly I like to just wander and take masses of screenshots of the interesting things I see in game. I consider leveling/questing as just a means to be able to play tourist in other zones more easily.
I would love to raid and do istances on my hunter, but my server sucks and everyones an a-hole when it comes to grouping. I.E. I am one of the only people in lfg most of the time, and people only raid with real life friends that play wow >.< and refuse to let me raid with them. So all I seem to do now is rep grind and pvp, not many people pvp on my server ether… got to love those groups of raiding alliance roaming outlands leaving bodys in their wake. I guess im a wow loner, perhaps I need to find some rl wow friends.
I suspect one of the things your acquaintance does NOT do, when he’s NOT logged into WoW, is read Mania’s Arcania. :D
yeah…i am an odd hunter too, i play on scilla a pvp server and bg mostly. that is more challenging and more exciting then raiding to me. well actually i am afraid of raiding and playing in groups i am anti-social in RL and i am anti-social in wow lol. i am mainly afraid of being the cause of a wipe.i play for my story, like just this morning while in redridge trying get some new pet skills i was attacked by an alliance lvl70 hunter and a lvl 61 warrior and i actually killed them both while using a lvl 8 boar lol. anyway i love to solo 5man instances that i couldn’t do before the burning crusade. i have done BRD and strat…though i have not killed baron rivendare yet.i am curently trying to get all of the pet skills and yes i am using this site. so thanks for all you have done here mania.
“I thought I was the only hunter who’d rather solo than raid…”
Nope. :P
I once swam around Teldrasil.
I sorf of know exactly what you do, when you are online xD
Somehow, I still feel that one the most epic experiences in the game is getting that unusual pet from the must unlikely location then you just hit level 10.
What do I do?
I raid.
that … and show 24 of my friends what beast mastery dps means, by topping the dmg done charts.
Hahah, I get the same thing sometimes.
‘What do you DO?’ I sit a lot in Nagrand leveling pets, and its a mystery to all everyone why i basically live there.
From Pre-BC to now- I went from being a solo hunter, to a pvp hunter, to a raid hunter, and now it seems I’m starting over again. I’ll log on just to go tame and level pets I haven’t had yet (or had before even) I LOVE going to instances for the really tricky tames, even for pets I don’t intend on keeping. I love that part of the game.. It’s like a challenge that only us hunters get to enjoy. So I salute you Mania, and proudly stand with you.
I’m an odd hunter. =)
I absolutely AGREE!
I play the same way, with lots of ‘wandering’ and ‘seeing whats going on’.
I do dailies for income and for levelling the pets that I try out.
(an aside – the Blackwind Sabrecat is awesome!)
I dont PvP execpt for rare actions in Halaa. INstances, same, basically never.
Raids, well, ditto.
I have done full spec BM, full MM, and am using a 19/0/42 Surv profile and am really enjoying it!
Enough babbling…big cheers from Ranthol 70 Surv Hunter on Amun’Thul
I dont feel like such An Odd Hunter anymore… thanks
Nothing wrong with soloing, Id preferr that than raiding, because my guild is full of morons hehe.
I hope Kris doesnt kill me for this..
Thank you! I now know I am not alone, thank you, thank you, thank you. WOW is my work release and my time to get together with my grand daughter and daughter and her hubby.
Some of the questions I get are – Go into instances? – “Nope.” Raid? – “Heavens no, lol!”. Get into a group and pvp? – “Go away, pest. You’re becoming boring!”. Well, you don’t play WOW – “oh yes I do! I solo, run my alts thru the low level dungeons that I want to do, and make my gold for the elite flying mount!”. Join my guild? – “gwaf, you’re terrible!”
So, if anyone is ever on Sentinels and see a Bloody Elf huntress, say hi, but beyond that, please don’t expect much :) Good hunting to ya’ll.
Wow, what a comfort this thread is!
Frankly, I’m sick of grouping and all the drama it entails; be it a dungeon/raid, or PvP. I mess up a lot, and seem to be the only one who can deal with it (and the fact that I find wipes hilarious doesn’t help matters, either — not that I try to get everyone killed).
I love soloing, whether it’s exploring, questing, seeing how far I can solo an instance, riding aimlessly around Azeroth, etc. Even today, I thought “I don’t think I’ve ever been to Durotar” (I’m a NE hunter on Hakkar), so I spent my afternoon turning down TK invites, just so I can finally say that I’ve been to Jaggedswine Farm and Orgrimmar. It’s a big world, and there’s plenty to do, and experiences to be had. I want to play to relax and have fun, and my purposeless escapades do just that.
Glad I’m not the only one!
Sorry for being so long-winded. Hunters rock!
I’m an alt-aholic, I have some 32odd toons, just on the American server, and now 5 on Euro servers. Thirteen of those are hunters!!! One 72, a few high 20′s, one lvl 34, the rest are under 20. Everyone of them has a unique pet, be it a Horde with an Alliance pet, or an Alliance with a Horde pet, or rare spawns/unique, such as Deathclaw on my Tauren hunter \(^o^)/ I don’t have time for spending hours in an instance, or waiting for a group to get itself together! Nor do i care enough to met someones specs for raids, etc. I collect non-coms, mounts, and the strange and the wonderful! Fortunatly my main guild is very understanding. I usually only run low lvl’s through instances, or if I need a bit of fast cash I might burn through a low lvl instance. This site is my favorite site (that and Thottbot) I get tired of reading the forums which make it sound like you HAVE to have certain gear, if you don’t you must be a failure! So thanks Mania *hugs*
Oh ya, and I have a picture of my lvl 72 hunter with one of every family, except Devilsaurs, and Spiritbeasts (soon though, I hope). A million thanks Mania, don’t know what I’d have done without this site!
