I Need a Little Break

I don’t know if it’s obvious, but I haven’t been playing much WoW lately — or anything else, really. I need a little break to recharge my batteries … and to prepare for the long upcoming season as we move towards Wrath of the Lich King.

So I’m going to be around just a little less for the next week or so. I’ll continue posting hunter pet news as I ran across it (and feel free to send me tips on anything I miss) and I’ll continue to post Name That Pet features (until and unless I run out of them), but I won’t necessarily be able to keep up with my usual goal of at least one post per day. This slowdown will probably only last for a week or two, but I wanted to let you know what was up.

It’s good to take a break sometimes. I’m particularly lucky in that I can take a break and still participate in the hunter community via you guys.

Heh, we all hit that point some time. Don’t force yourself to get back into WoW, believe me, it only makes it worse. Just relax, enjoy yourself with other things for a bit. Go out on some dates with your husband, just take it easy. WoW will always be here, as will fans of your blog and Petopia. No need to feel rushed into coming back.

“I need a little break to recharge my batteries …”

Obviously Mania is really a robot or AI program, and needs to be reformatted.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ve heard this many times in the recent weeks. Those people have all put WoW on the back-burner to test their hand a Age of Conan. I see how it is. Mania doesn’t love us anymore. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! :*(

    LOL, j/k. Have fun recharging.

Mania - One of our guildies left WoW to play AoC. Sad.

AoC isnt a good game you guys will see people running back on wow,at least AoC does not diserv the “ultimate WoW-killer” title,Warhamer online could be better but NOT AoC

  8. Jayhawk - May 22nd, 2008 @ 3:58 am EDT

    Stay sane =)
Better to take the odd break than to burn out, neh?

Meh, if anything Aion: Tower of Eternity will be a WoW killer. I mean have you seen the graphics? Not to mention the ranger class looks really sweet. You guys might want to check info on it. BTW apprently Rangers will be able to turn into Wolfs!!!! That is just sweet IMO

    Sigh. . .

Ok, for those of you doing the usual ‘WoW’s impending Doom’ stuff. Vanguard was suppose to kill WoW. Vanguard died almost at launch. I’ve been around WoW for almost three years now and I’ve seen games come and go and still nothing beats WoW.

OK, first of all, the graphics are an issue, but for the opposite reason. Those ‘killer’ graphics require an equally killer outlay of money to upgrade a person’s system. Age of Conan isn’t as bad as Vanguard in this direction, but it will still have a lot of people cringing at the idea of spending hundreds of dollars to upgrade just to play. Blizzard deliberately low balled their specs in order to allow the most number of people to play the game.

Warhammer Online has been delayed AGAIN! This is the third or fourth time, and that doesn’t include the first time the project collapsed. Apparently, the Beta showed some major flaws in the set up. Not to metion the fact that the graphics are high end, and the format is highly PvP.

Given that this is the first time I’ve even heard about Aion: Tower of Eternity, either you’re being sarcastic, or that game’s just going to die due to the lack of word on the street.

So far, Mythic is being good about not rushing their product, but nearly everyone else has been. Age of Conan went to market with a horrible UI, and a lot of major flaws in it. It was a rush job. Warhammer Online, though, may end up delayed so many times that the end product fails to meet player expectation. Blizzard made a game that is, on the whole, solid. Oh we quibble and kvetch about the tiny details and how we think the various classes should opperate, but the reality is, you can still get to level 70 without feeling like you’re stuck in the mud. Yes, WoW is now geared more for the causal player, but then, that really is the secret to their success. So long as this is the way it is, WoW will be around for a long time.

Oh yes, enjoy your vacation Mania.

  12. Carawn - May 22nd, 2008 @ 8:43 am EDT

    Enjoy the break :)

By the way, Jayhawk, as I recall it’s better to burn out than to fade away…

Mind you, the guy who said that lost his head a little later, so he could have been wrong :)

Mania enjoy your break, you deserve it.

Seidouyumi, if you ask me Mythic is one of the best game making companies out there, it’s a shame they aren’t as large as blizzard. They believe in true customer service and being honest with their customers, unlike blizzard. As far as being pushed back so many times.. there is this little game, you might have heard of called Half-Life 2, that people waited 5 years for and it still sold amazingly. I wouldn’t count on Warhammer delays effecting it’s sales.

Kudos on the Highlander quote, Carawyn, one of my personal favorites.

Now back to being off the subject. WoW is a good game. Currently, it is sitting on just being a good game. When it came out, it was amazing in all the right ways, but as time has passed, its sort of fallen out of that. You can throw the ten million mark at me, and with good reason, but the reason for that is fairly clear. For one, it can run even on fairly low end machines, like Sei pointed out. Two, its easy. As in, a monkey could be trained to play WoW (And probably do better then half the people I stumble across). That makes it accessible to everyone, and in truth, fairly enjoyable. To suppliment and really expand on both of those, though, Blizzard has pushed it world wide. WoW is out in how many languages now? I think they slipped in Yddish a while back, for goodness sake!

That being said, I don’t think what kills what will come from without, but from within. Blizzards single minded focus on arenas is already starting to make a lot of people uncomfortable, and I’m not to pleased myself about the entire balance of the game being shifted for a later day addition that shouldn’t warrant mass changes that screw with standard PvE and PvP. I’m not into the whole e-sport thing, and I think most WoW players would agree. The other huge, HUGE strike against Blizzard, and one that has me eyeing Warhammer fairly heavily, is their almost total lack of customer service. I’m not asking for giving every whiner everything they want. I am not asking for breaking the game for a single class. I am talking about communities as a whole requesting things, and things that wouldn’t be game breaking or what have you, basically being told to STFU. Rudely. I am talking about people reporting bugs, or people making detailed, intelligent arguments, being once again rudely told to bugger off. It goes deeper, but I have hijacked poor Manias thread long enough.

  15. Palladiamors - May 22nd, 2008 @ 2:30 pm EDT

Double, but Sei, I would much, MUCH rather a game be delayed and done right, then for it to come out filled with bugs, broken mechanics, and overall crap. They can delay it as long as they need to, I’ll wait for a good game from people who listen to their customers.

  16. mandm413 - May 22nd, 2008 @ 4:26 pm EDT

WOW will continue to have millions of customers for years to come but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a large decline if a fun STABLE game comes out. If another game like shadowbane were to come out with a world building system and full time PVP you would see numbers drop in WOW the secret to WOW has been its stability. Shadowbane was the most fun game I have ever played but it crashed constantly when you had large groups fighting. No one will stick with a game that lags badly or crashes your system due to whatever so don’t look for WOW to diminish anytime soon because anyone who can’t play the harder online games will stick to WOW where you don’t have to have great skill to succeed.

  17. mandm413 - May 22nd, 2008 @ 4:27 pm EDT

Sorry got distracted, enjoy your break Mania and thanks for all you have done and do do for our community.

  18. sr7olsniper - May 23rd, 2008 @ 12:43 pm EDT

Well, I was not being sarcastic. If you have ever heard of Lineage 2 then you should at least check the info on Aion. And yes, Mania I as many playes in WoW take breaks often. I was on my hunter the other day and for some reason i decided to get him full S1. I did, however i burned an entire week and now i cant even log into wow without feeling lame. So for that reason im also taking a break. Hope you enjoy your time off!!

  19. Sasha - May 24th, 2008 @ 4:29 pm EDT

    Mania

Kick back and relax, enjoy yourself sweetie, the hunter love will still be here when you get back.

Take it from me, I’v been on a break this whole expansion because I had to switch servers after breaking up with my X. Its been PvP ever since. You know, despite shifting from hardcore raiding to PvP, its been alright.

SURE I MAY NOT be back on Chogall raiding Hyjal and BT with my old friends. However its been a great coasting experience. I also don’t have to put up with idiots in the new guild claiming that Iv never seen the inside of MC ect. (Despite I have T2 safely locked away in the bank, as well as AQ and Naxx mementos)

    Yet you see.

Taking a break is awesome. All that crap doesn’t matter anymore and it becomes all about you. I hope you take a wonderful break, and know that the hunter community respects YOU. And we know the data that you collected on pet threat is TRUE, and always will be. I hate how blizzard just dismissed your hard work to try and save face.

Your a MVP of the hunter world, and you darling, deserve a Wow-cation.
    Enjoy yourself in the sunshine.
