Name That Pet: Snowstrider’s Raptor

Final Name: Blackice

Today we have a bit of a challenge! Snowstrider, a troll Beast Mastery hunter from the Madoran realm, writes:

I don’t actually roleplay, but I do like making a backstory and occasionally speaking from my character’s point of view. I recently tamed Goreclaw the Ravenous and am finding it hard to pick a suitable name for this sleek beast.

My first pet was a Gray owl by the name of Frostwing, and I was hoping to continue naming my pets with a snow-feel to their names, but such a name doesn’t quite seem to fit an obsidian raptor found in the swamps of Kalimdor.

I prefer to solo unless I really need to get gear or do a certain quest, and I dislike PvP, preferring to let others mind their own business unless they really start to annoy me (I have yet to get truly annoyed at anyone in game, though a night elf brought me close to the brink).

Thanks in advance for your help!

So … in-character and snow-themed, but appropriate for a swamp-dwelling obdisian raptor. This should be fun!

  1. Robert Frost has a poem called “The Woodpile” about walking in a frozen swamp. Maybe something from here.

    Here is it:

Out walking in the frozen swamp one grey day
I paused and said, “I will turn back from here.
No, I will go on farther–and we shall see.”
The hard snow held me, save where now and then
One foot went down. The view was all in lines
Straight up and down of tall slim trees
Too much alike to mark or name a place by
So as to say for certain I was here
Or somewhere else: I was just far from home.
A small bird flew before me. He was careful
To put a tree between us when he lighted,
And say no word to tell me who he was
Who was so foolish as to think what he thought.
He thought that I was after him for a feather–
The white one in his tail; like one who takes
Everything said as personal to himself.
One flight out sideways would have undeceived him.
And then there was a pile of wood for which
I forgot him and let his little fear
Carry him off the way I might have gone,
Without so much as wishing him good-night.
He went behind it to make his last stand.
It was a cord of maple, cut and split
And piled–and measured, four by four by eight.
And not another like it could I see.
No runner tracks in this year’s snow looped near it.
And it was older sure than this year’s cutting,
Or even last year’s or the year’s before.
The wood was grey and the bark warping off it
And the pile somewhat sunken. Clematis
Had wound strings round and round it like a bundle.
What held it though on one side was a tree
Still growing, and on one a stake and prop,
These latter about to fall. I thought that only
Someone who lived in turning to fresh tasks
Could so forget his handiwork on which
He spent himself, the labour of his axe,
And leave it there far from a useful fireplace
To warm the frozen swamp as best it could
With the slow smokeless burning of decay.

  2. Wainfleet is a bog in canada(thus fitting the cold and swampy bit) also wain makes me think waining light effects and fleet makes me think fast. For a dark colored(wain) raptor(fast) that belongs to a snow named hunter and was found in a swamp it seems like a decent fit.

  3. Coldblood.

It’s snow-ish (or at least cold), it holds true to the raptor (being a reptile and all), and you don’t have to have any background knowledge about poems or Canadian swamps to get it. :p

  4. Coldfangs
    Frostbringer
    Nicarao :D
    Deathstrike
if you are german player: Gezeitenzahn

  5. NeedsMittens?

  6. The bane of my winter driving - BlackIce.

  7. Second BlackIce!

  8. Slash
    Gore
    Rumour
    Whisper
    Truth
    Deception

  9. quagmire or slough would be good choices considering where (s)he is from.

  10. I like Blackice and Coldblood, not sure if I want my raptor to be permanently stuck with either name, so please keep the suggestions coming!

  11. frostbite? hmm.what about the names of weird swampbourn diseases that result in chills instead of fevers?

  12. IcySwamp, Frozen, Muck

  13. slushy

    frosty

    freezey

    milkshake

    Mr. sniffles

  14. Tundra might work, but then again, Obsidian, “ice like” volcanic glass doesn’t sound half bad either.

  15. “Rex”…Seems fitting that a troll would name a pet that way.

    Going along the “snowy” theme.

    “Coldclaw”
    “Icytalon”

Or maybe something that truly fits an NPC with a personality. A unique name…

    “Drakken”
    “Kellukton”
    “Babyjesus”

How about this though for awesome roleplaying? Get a frostwolf pet, such as the ones from AV and then get the AV mount. You can play it as if your pet and your mount are actually the same NPC.

  16. how about fridgedrunner or icydeath?

  17. I like Blackice that crap can kill ya just like yer raptor.

But since you prefer to be a loner (kinda like my self) how about

    Lonewolf
    Polerclaw
    Shiver

  18. Blackice is awesome..I also say Frostbite sounds pretty fitting too. =D

  19. Hmm…Coldfang?

I have no idea *rubs head*

  20. Frozenknight
    or Frozenight
    IcyDeath
JacktheRipper….a play on his killing maiming with claws plus a little more emphasis makes him Jack frost. : )
    JackFrostRipper
    JackFrost

  21. AVALANCH… a force of nature to be reckoned with. Usual contact with and avalanche is death, sometimes fast, sometimes slow but always the same result. Death.

  22. ok tired.. but I did spell it right the second time.. I do like blackice.. or is that hate it since I live with is more months of the yr than I care to think of right now. Polarclaw and Frostbite are nice too.. but and avalanche! lol good luck. lots of nice names to choose from. Let us know when you decide.

  23. Freon

  24. Coldtalon?
    Icyfang?
    Snowanger?

  25. Hm… cold… damp… and a Raptor…

Chilblain. A frostbite-like affliction that can occur when extremities (usually feet, and Raptors are best known for the huge foot-claws) are given prolonged exposure to cold damp conditions.

  26. I finally picked Blackice as his name, since it fits his color, though chillblain might’ve been better, I’m happy with ice

  27. darkice

  28. Ember
