Name That Pet: Elouran’s Owl
Elouran, an eloquent female Night Elf, sent in the following request for help naming her owl.
I am certainly an avid believer in keeping the first pet you tame - even if that pet ends up becoming your “secondary” later in life… So obviously, choosing a name is a delicate matter - as it can only happen once, and will be stuck with you for the rest of your character’s existence.
Elouran’s introduction into the world of taming creatures began simply enough - though something she did not expect to happen certainly had. Once she had learned her new skill of how to tame a beast, she quickly set out to tame her first friend - a nightsaber of sorts was her goal, passing by all the spiders creeping across the ground, and ignoring all the passive owls flapping about noisily in the forest. Making sure to tame the beast of greatest skill - she watched and waited in the shadows of the leaf-cover, and examined all the nightsabers she could - sure to notice any weaknesses or sicknesses that the individuals might have.
For the longest time she even ignored the great grey owl perched quietly, watching her. But as time passed, and daylight started to pierce the sky - she felt that she would not find her nightsaber this night, but perhaps the next - and she thought she would travel to the inn and rest. But one can never imagine the inner-workings of one’s mind, nor the mind of an owls. As she started out her long walk back to the inn, the silly creature followed her - silently flying from one tree-branch perch to the next… and her decision was made.
Perhaps it was the smell of meat in her pack that lured him to her, though it did not get the notice of the nightsabers.. or perhaps it was her odd behavior which peaked his interest - she may never know. But what she does know, is that he will be a loyal friend for life - a guardian of sorts, always to watch out for her in silence. His fierce claws will always be there to defend her, and his quiet presence will always be there to comfort her, no matter where her journeys may take her.
Obviously, this story is RP based - but he is the first pet Elouran has tamed, and should be the last, save for training - and when he “molts” to the vibrant plumes of the “Avian Ripper”… but all the same, I’d like to have him with a good name. Preferably one that is not in English - or, at least sounds fairly “elven”.. I tried looking up several names.. “Amin” for example, the Arabic word for “friend or guardian”.. but such a short name didn’t seem to fit… Perhaps something with a “K” somewhere in it?
I’m sure we can come up with an eloquent name for such an eloquent night elf!

I would suggest a Finnish name, as I think they sound quite unusual and have a kind of “elven” touch sometimes. So how about “Ilmatar”, a goddess of air from the Finnish mythology? If you’d like something with a “k” in it - how about “Mielikki”, the goddess of forests and healing?

I’m also a Night Elf hunter, so here’s a few names for your pet… “Lirimaer”, “Mellonamin” (My friend), “Astalder” (Valiant One), “Nikerym”, “Khila Amim”. Well hope you find something you like!

Aloorok.
That was based on absolutely nothing and I think it sounds good. Maybe something with ‘rok’ at the end of it. Hehe.

Elu’runak

I have always enjoyed the language of ‘elves’ and when I first encountered the internet, I found this link:

Being a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien, I have forever since used this resource over the years of my internet activity. Perhaps you might find something there that will seem interesting, considering its a dictionary from Elvish to English and vice versa.

WoW Wiki has its own listing of known words in elvish, both in night elf and high/blood elf dialects. I’d recommend those before a LotR elvish guide, myself.

You could try using the naming trick Mania posted a while back to find what “Guardian” or something similar is in Darnassian.

Yes and no. Grey owl in the sense of “an owl which is grey” would be “graue Eule” but grey owl in the sense of an owl species’s name (like snow owl) would be “Graueule”. Only the latter I would use as a name.
Recently I named my owl “Minerva”.

When I had my first owl (Olm the wise, Rare White owl in Felwood) I thought of the perfect name. Athena. It’s the greek goddess of Wisdom..as Owls are often thought to be Wise. Everyone seemed to enjoy it..but I soon moved on to find other pets. Good luck!

Akela, Kiele, Kaede.. or not with K’s, and sort of english, but names that in my mind fit an owl: Iona, or if the “i” looks like an L is a problem, Fiona. Owls also being nocturnal, perhaps Luna. Since that is kinda over-used, you could try variations of it. such as “Trelune” for a boy owl, ‘Kaeluna’, or “stella luna” was the name of a bat in a children’s story. or look up gray in elvish, and attach that to it. great pet choice, i love the gray owl’s blue beak. :)

This was my first hunter (night elf now lvl70) and dropped my first pet - cat from Teldrasil called Carnedd - a long time ago and been thru a succession of pets since.
Now I have also have a dwarf called Scrumpy. He had a black boar as a first pet (which he still has) and has since picked up a Ghost Saber (Spook) and this week collared the rare spawn black wolf Snarler from Feralas which I’ve called Hemingway. I will not be changing any of these from now (lvl42)!
Name for you owl: you could go for Tylluan which is Welsh for owl :o)

I’m not to sure about your preference to an “elven” name, but I can give you name from a mythology “Icarus”
Actually, I have a Gutripper. I named it “Wing Zero”. It’s from an anime from Japan “Gundam Wing”.

hmmm… owl names. here are a few i thought up.
harfang (an obscure name for an owl)
Saw Whet (after a kind of small owl)
stealth
night wing
skyshadow
stormcloud
moonwing
ratcatcher
screech
minerva
orbit (as in the eye socketm as well as in flying around something, cool double meaning)
threesixty (for a head spin, not that owls really go a full three sixty, but it sounds cool)
I saw one hunter once who named their owl mouseslayer I laughed when I saw it.
FirstChAoS - May 7th, 2008 at 1:14 pm EDT
sorry,. didn’t read the backstory to see it had to sound elven, my bad.
Shirubia - May 7th, 2008 at 5:54 pm EDT
Cuate in spanish means friend, in the meaning of ”Bro!”
You could just replace the ”C” with ”K” and leave like Kuate
Emowin - May 7th, 2008 at 5:56 pm EDT
Soarnak
Ithora
Illoonrah
Curskin
Just same slightly eligant/elvish sounding names that just poped into my head. Illoonrah an obvious referance for “Illoon” the goddess that the night elves often refer to in the phrase “Illoon be priased” I’m not sure if that is the correct spelling for it or not.
Kwaniahin - May 7th, 2008 at 6:11 pm EDT
Amicus=friend in Latin
Ala=wing in Latin
Vigilo=watcher in Latin

The correct spelling is Elune ^^ So Illoonrah would be Elunerah.
It’s still pronounced Illoon though.

I am an undead warlock who has always revered the spiritual Tauren of Mulgore. One of the bankers in Thunder bluff is called “Atepa.” I think that’s a nice name. For that matter, why not “Cairne?”
Emowin - May 8th, 2008 at 3:28 pm EDT
Thank you for the spelling correction Wolfington my spelling has allways been…shall we say lacking lol. But at least you got what I meant.

Owls are known for their wisdom, and in myths, are seen as teachers and keepers of great knowledge…
And the Darnassian term for a respected teacher is “Shan’do”…
Trei - May 9th, 2008 at 12:12 am EDT
IIRC owls are actually far from wise, the common ones just usually seem like they got the wise old man look.
Peter - May 9th, 2008 at 5:53 am EDT
“Mellon”
Is Sindarin (tolkien elvish) for Friend :-)
Have a look at http://gerth.adsl.dk/sindarin/viskat.asp for more Sindarin if you want to :)

I don’t know about a name for your pet, but one word that doesn’t have a ‘k’ in it is “piqued”, as in “…it piqued my interest…”. Not “peaked”. HTH.
Elouran - May 12th, 2008 at 1:19 pm EDT
I would like to touch on a few of the names mentioned that really really got my attention. :3
Astalder - valiant one, this sounds quite nice to me. :3
Aloorok - liked this one, especially with the sharp “rok” at the end of it, and the rolling sound that I get with the beginning of “aloor”. It does sound quite “elven”, and has that sharp “K” I was looking for. :3
Elu’runak also sounded quite nice to me, for the same reasons that Aloorok did, though without being able to put a apostraphy (sp?) in the pet’s names - Elurunak… I suppose that would work just fine as well, but it doesn’t seem to quite roll so nice for me off my tongue. I suppose if I shortened it to Elurnak it would work.
Soarnak also seems like a very good choice, gives me the impression of “flying” - along with that sharp “K” again. It even rolls quite nicely, giving it that elven feel. :3
Atepa sounds awesome! Though, not for this owl perhaps - but.. when I get an alternative (defensive) pet, such as a wolf - probably one of those Coyotes near Thunder Bluff, I shall certainly name him Atepa. ^.^
Honestly, when narrowing it down - I ended up with both Aloorok and Soarnak, and was forced to flip a coin! Aloorok won. ^.^
Thank you everyone for your help, advice, and input.. Now that my own is named (Aloorok), I shall be able to play on without guilt of having a faithful companion named “Owl”.

Being the Legend of Zelda fool I am I named my owl “Kaepora” for that owl that helps Link along his quest. Kaepora sure has helped me out of quite a few pickles and I just love him too much to let him go. I suggest Silentwing or Violetfeather if someone hasn’t said them yet to match your owl’s personality or habits.
