Name That Pet: Halfdragon’s Ghost Saber

Halfdragon, a young Blood Elf hunter from Ysondre, sent in this request:
So I recently rerolled a BE hunter. I did the taming quest, got a dragonhawk and hated it. After realising it had caster stats (thanks to the handy Petopia website) I read the Choosing Your First Pet: Eversong Woods guide. I got an Elder Springpaw and have leveled it all the way to 26 or so.
I had a Ghost Sabre on my previous main (A NE hunter) and thought, why not? I will get another one. It spawned on the first statue. I love it, I have leveled it to my level (currently 29) but can’t think of a name for it. I want a name that mostly represents how he is, ya know, ghostly.
So please, name my ghostsabre!
We should definitely be able to do ghostly. *grin*

Phantasm or Pneuma (Ancient greek for spirit)
Tonrar - Inuit for “ghost”. That’s what my ghost saber was named but I had to release him :(

Ariel - the airy spirit from Shakespeare’s Tempest. I’d have named my Ghostwolf that, but it doesn’t sound wolfy enough. :p
Here’s a few suggestions…
1.) Cataclysm
2.) Serene (Completely clear)
3.) Diaphanous (So thin as to transmit light)
4.) Sheerkhan (Sheer: So thin as to transmit light)
5.) Gossamer (Which was the name of the famous monster from Bugs Bunny where Bugs exclaims, “Monsters are such interesting people.” - The word also means, “Characterized by unusual lightness and delicacy”)
And for something funny/clever:
1.) Cthru (”See Through”)
2.) Invisipuss

Hmm, I love all of the name’s. (I thought it would take like 1 month before Mania would put it on the site *Grin*) Hmm,I actually think i will go with either half visible or halfcat =)
Drake is another word for Dragon.
Halfdragon and Pendragon might work too.
I usually like meaningful names for my pets. Often, the shorter, the better (unless I’m going goofy). Looking at it, ‘Veil’ comes to mind. Or maybe ‘Mist’. If you don’t mind the Hercules connotations, ‘Aeolis’ was the term for the controller of the winds and ruler of a floating island.
Just a couple thoughts off the top of my head.
Banshee, Myst, Vanish, Mirage, Shade or Shadow.
I named my ghost saber Khazper, I might have preferred Khazpurr though.
Hey, my ghost saber is named Banshee! I didn’t even think of that ’til now.
My 31 Troll hunter has a ghost saber.. Took me a while to name it too. I went with Penumbra. From the Latin words paene (almost) and umbra (shadow). Also the partially illuminated area between the darkness and light of a solar eclipse, and if I remember correctly it was the name for the spirit world in White Wolf’s World of Darkness (Vampire, Werewolf, etc.) rpg.
I’ve had a couple of Ghost Sabers over the time, ive got like 4 hunter now to try different pet types out ^.^ my main has never had one though, (he does have the ghost wolf tho so its not such a problem) but yeah, all my Ghost Sabers have been called Stelmaria, which is from the dark Materials trilogy, Lord Asrial has a snow Leopard Daemon (if ive lost anyone at this point go buy the books, i fully recommend them) .. and his is called Stelmaria, so i figure, a ghostly half see through snow leopard…. Stelmaria ^.^ it fits :) either way, nice choice mate and /cheer /salute to Mania for the continuing good work, you’re an inspiration to us all :)

Some others could be etherial (sp?) or a play on that word

My ghost saber is named Selina.
Took it from Selina Kyle, Catwoman from the Batman comics.
Mine’s name is “Boo” for the obvious “ghost” reference, but also because our cat IRL is named the same (after King Boo of Mario fame: http://www.mariowiki.com/King_Boo) and I thought it was fun to have him in the game too. :) Took me forever to name mine too, I was really picky about a good “ghost-ish” name.
I have that cat on one of my hunters, and after much thought named him Boreas. (Boreas = god of north wind, messanger of winter.)

Tolkien’s Elvish language is a beautiful one…much like the cat.

When I recently found (on Petopia’s) that the Ghost Saber was tameable I immediately began researching names. The one I chose may work for you as well; Kaibyo.
It is japanese for Ghost Cat. It is short and rolls well off the tongue (KY-bee-oh).
BTW: Dragonhawks are SWEET for farming lowbie instances as their Fire Breath attacks every 10 seconds in a cone.
My Ghost Sabre’s name is Negligee. Why? Because she’s see through and kind of flimsy.

I named my ghost saber Phantom..
My ’saber is Nemesis, in large part because RP-wise, he actually IS a spirit of vengeance that sought out an angry young draenei hunter and decided to hook up with her. Which is made worse by the fact that was exactly what she was looking for, and thus he was named Nemesis. (In draenei, but I believe in letting my pet’s “display name” be something in English so I don’t need to explain why my pet is named “mrghrlghrghrlgh” or whatever the in-game “translation” algorithm spat out. XD)
ANYHOW. I’m surprised no one has suggested “Spirit” yet! Anima, Spiritus (Latin), Pneuma, Psyche (Greek), and Ruach, Neshama (Hebrew) are some other choices. Noumenon — “a thing in and of itself” would be a fun one, as is its more common antonym, Phenomenon (a thing perceived). What’s interesting about Noumena (plural of noumenon) is that they technically cannot be observed, since the act of perceiving them renders them phenomena, since they come to us through the lense of our senses.
So there’s some dorky philosophy jabber for you. :D
My BElf hunter is 70 and has had her ghost saber since 20. He just dinged 70 a day or two ago and the poor thing is still named Cat! My alliance hunter has a Winterspring tiger named “Epic” because he was her first purple. Before she got to 60 and picked up the Winterspring tiger, she had a crab for 50 levels named “CaptCarl” from PeeWee’s playhouse. (A crab just seemed perfect for that name/personality.) Both Epic and CaptCarl were names that just *fit* so perfectly they were assigned immediately. So I keep hoping for that with poor nameless Cat. Hopefully before WotLK!
My Dranei hunter’s ghost sabre is named Schroedinger, after Schroedinger’s cat, the famous illustration of the quantum law of superposition. Schroedinger’s cat was both existent and nonexistent at the same time, which describes the ghost sabre very nicely, IMO.

Well, I happen to have a level 64 hunter. She had one of these leveling, eventually I got rid of it. At 63, I decided I really wanted one again. After a while of thinking, I came to Dahlia, not only a GREAT name that I’ve always loved, but also a murder case. The cat IS ghostly, soo. Who knows. She could have been murdered and sent back to me, for a safe keeping of sort. :3
