Name That Pet: Aaranay’s Wind Serpent

Aaranay with Wind SerpentFinal Name: Beanpole

Today we have a letter from Aaranay of Uldaman:

Dear Mania & Fellow Mania’s Arcania Readers:

I really enjoy reading the ‘Name That Pet’ segment because I am so terrible at coming up with names for my pets. I usually have to rely on my friends to suggest names for me, which I think they are probably getting tired of doing (I am picky, so it’s rare I hear a pet name that I like within the first try or two). A bit about me …

I am a 70 Night Elf BM Hunter who up until recently swore by my faithful cat, Firecracker. With an open mind I sent him to stay in the Stormwind Kitty Hilton while I went and found myself a Wind Serpent. My first one was redish-orange and after getting him halfway through level 67 I decided he just didn’t seem like a good fit. I released him and went back to find a nice aquamarine serpent. With him at full loyalty and being a hair away from level 70 as well, I still have not found a name for him.
I can be a goofball sometimes, so silly names are perfectly fine (I have an Owl named Dr Who). I don’t really get into role playing, but I would consider a RP type name for him if it felt right.
Than you for the help, Wind Serpent and I are really looking forward to the suggestions :)

Anxiously Awaiting Suggestions,
Aaranay & Wind Serpent

Let’s see what we can do!

Since he’s a wind serpent, how about something like… OnceBitten? Or TwiceShy?

  2. Ryno - April 25th, 2008 @ 8:10 pm UTC

    ElectricLime
    Neon
    Dynamite
    Sparks

All I can think of at the moment, hehe…

  3. MiT - April 25th, 2008 @ 8:47 pm UTC

    Aaranay….hmm.

Could always do the backwards ‘Yanaraa’, which doesn’t sound too bad at all.
    Voldemort
    Nagini
    Parsel(mouth)
The Ouroboros, also spelled Ourorboros, Oroborus, Uroboros or Uroborus (pronounced /ˌjʊəroʊˈbɒrəs/ or /ʊˈrɒbɔrɔs/), is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon swallowing its own tail and forming a circle.
    Serpentes
Asclepius (from rod of asclepius, first aid symbol)
    Tnepres Dniw (wind serpent backwards)
    Stenperdwin (anagram of wind serpent)
    Taser (for lightning breath)
1.21Jigowatt (or whatever variation you can think of)

  4. Wolfington - April 25th, 2008 @ 9:06 pm UTC

I have seen several serpents like that, and the name I have liked most was “Artemis” goddess of the hunt. Of course, if your pet is a guy, then that wont work..

    “Gizmo”
    “GreenWings”
    “GreenThunder”
    “Aqua”
“Uraeus” (Serpent in the headdress of Egyptian kings)

    Thats all, good luck naming!

  5. Faeldray - April 25th, 2008 @ 10:01 pm UTC

Hmm…I’m thinking “Slane”. Or “Yarrow”. Or “Asphodel”.

  6. 9400 - April 25th, 2008 @ 10:12 pm UTC

I like Artemis (goddess of the hunt, but it’s a name for females and males), or Akatosh (Dragon God of Time in The Elder Scrolls).
Talos works too(Another Elder Scrolls God, he’s like the equivalent of Zeus).

    That’s just me.

  7. Seidouyumi - April 26th, 2008 @ 12:00 am UTC

Ok, since you have an owl named Dr. Who, how about naming your Wind Serpent The Master after Dr Who’s arch-nemisis.

My two favorite pets are named Anko, a Serpent and Hinata, a Dragonhawk.

  8. cloudmonkey - April 26th, 2008 @ 12:24 am UTC

Smaragd–It’s an old name for emerald.

  9. Chanman - April 26th, 2008 @ 12:52 am UTC

I named my wind serpent Zephyr, but I also like the names
    Zeus
    Jupiter
    Sparky
    Airy

  10. Cobroso, Hunter Extroardinare - April 26th, 2008 @ 1:27 am UTC

  12. Kanaan - April 26th, 2008 @ 4:02 am UTC

    A silly names:
    LimeOfDeath, KillerBrocolli, PoisonIvy

  13. Acidulante - April 26th, 2008 @ 7:15 am UTC

If spaces were allowed, I’d call it Mr. Slithers. As they’re not, how about Bananas? Or Rondo? Or Fangsworth?

I think I’ll tame a ravager and call it Fangsworth.

  14. Seidouyumi - April 26th, 2008 @ 8:47 am UTC

    Cobroso-

:) Another Dr. Who person. I grew up with the series. My favorite pets are all named for characters in various anime series except for my Carrion Bird. He’s named Igor in part as homage to Terry Pratchett’s Diskworld.

BTW, Emerald and variations there on are always good. Fang is another one. Hebi is Japanese for Snake. Kiba is Japanese for Fang.

On the silly side, you could name him Politician.

My brother in law has a snake named Mr. Burns. My sister has the matching snake and named her Ms Bouvias.

  15. wolfingtons - April 26th, 2008 @ 11:29 am UTC

hi i was thinking kiba, (fang) warserphant, spikebean,or maybe aquabean,

  16. Goldwarte - April 26th, 2008 @ 12:29 pm UTC

What about “SLJackson”? As in “Snakes on a Plane”…as in flying snakes = wind serpent?

  17. beastfury - April 26th, 2008 @ 12:57 pm UTC

    Dont Tase Me
    lol

  18. Kerub - April 26th, 2008 @ 2:23 pm UTC

well for aomw reason i like the name “sparrow”

  19. Rebecca - April 26th, 2008 @ 3:30 pm UTC

How about Hakkar, the name of the Wind serpent god?

  20. Rodoan - April 26th, 2008 @ 3:42 pm UTC

Hmm, can’t believe I’ve not seen any named connection to the Aztec Quetzalcoatl, since the wind serpents practically scream that their creation was inspired by that feathered serpent.

Consider reducing a word by a few characters, leaving the imagination of the other players to fill it in. For example, my panther, Rudyar, named for Rudyard Kipling. Perhaps that could also work for a mouthful like Quetzalcoatl, something like say, Quetzal for short.

And since I mentioned Kipling, his two deadly cobras from “Riki Tiki Tavi” come to mind: Nag and Nagina. I believe I heard that “Nag” is actually the word for snake or cobra in India.

And if you want the humorous names “DeathBreath” sums it up nicely.

  21. Danticss - April 26th, 2008 @ 3:53 pm UTC

    arcticos – random thought

  22. kalabus - April 26th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm UTC

first of all Id like to say those are all prety decent choices however due to recent events of blizzard removing my pet name and providing me a violation of policy email, Ive come to find out that pet names can only be composed of one word names ….. how lame my pet Name was SheGaveMe wich due to someones complaints was considered to be a horible name. feel free to name your pet this. I know I liked the name

  23. Bobo & SgtPork - April 26th, 2008 @ 6:13 pm UTC

@kalabus – If Blizzard ever pulls that #$%@ on SgtPork, they can kiss my dorf butt bye bye /PO’d!

    As for the windserpent,
“Ixnay” to go with Aaranay, or
“Mopiac”, My Other Pet Is A Cat =)

  24. kalabus - April 26th, 2008 @ 8:28 pm UTC

Im not kidding I got the email to prove it. happened on shadow council server last night, some seventy priest named tolasen did the complaint. get she has nothing better to do than govern the way others play wow. as for the serpent quetzaqoatl Im not sure I spelled it right, feathered serpent god for the aztec empire. very befiting of this game

  25. Mania - April 26th, 2008 @ 9:22 pm UTC

kalabus: Shadow Council is an RP server, isn’t it? And just because I am curious, what kind of pet is it? And how did you find out who filed the complaint? (Blizzard doesn’t normally tell you that information, as I understand it.)

  26. Seidouyumi - April 26th, 2008 @ 11:29 pm UTC

Shadow Council is an RP server. On RP servers the rules of naming are a lot tighter than they are on other servers. So, Kalibus, unfortunately, the name you chose violated their rules regarding names creating sentences, and on an RP server, they will enforce that.

Bobo- Sgtpork is just fine. So long as his name isn’t a sentence, they cannot force it to be changed, and it isn’t offensive by a long shot.

  27. Nyx - April 27th, 2008 @ 2:30 am UTC

Seidou, naming policy also does not permit names with titles, such as “Queen” or “Captain” or… Sgt. Learn2read TOS, I guess.

It’s not a particularly funny name [Captain Pork would've been funnier], and it could indeed be reported and changed.

Oddly, I tend to play an RPG as an RPG, so my names tend towards that proclivity.

  28. kalabus - April 27th, 2008 @ 12:03 pm UTC

The person who filed the complaint told me before hand, all she said was thats the worst pet name ever and the next day pet was done for.

  29. aaranay - April 27th, 2008 @ 12:35 pm UTC

I want to thank everybody for the help. There are a lot of great suggestions in here and I am up between several already :)

  30. batgrl - April 27th, 2008 @ 12:44 pm UTC

Aaranay – I also had to hop in just to cheer over the naming of your owl after Dr Who – longtime Who fan here!

And to second Rodoan’s and Kalabus’ suggestion of Quetzalcoatl – I haven’t seen that around yet, at least not on my server anyway. And I always stop to look at the windserpents, just to marvel at how large they are in comparison to other pets – at least they always seem larger. I haven’t seen anyone with one of the lower windserpents that have been leveled up to 70 – anyone know if they’re as large as the Outlands ones? This is the kind of thing that makes me want to level up a pet – just out of curiousity to see what it would look like at 70. Wish there was a way to tell the size increase. (Is there?) Oh and that color is one of my favorite shades too – great jade green.

  31. Jayhawk - April 27th, 2008 @ 1:27 pm UTC

    Emerald?
Or for something more silly Absinthe?

  32. Seidouyumi - April 27th, 2008 @ 2:05 pm UTC

    Nyx-

You are correct, and I stand corrected on this. In terms of pet names on a normal server, it may be one of those discresionary issues where the GM’s may decide that it isn’t offensive and it is alright because this isn’t a character. There have been a few cases where someone has been reported and the decision was that something that they said was not offensive or that their name or pet’s name was alowable. It would be nice, however, if they did make it a bit clearer when it comes to pets.

  33. Tempric - April 27th, 2008 @ 4:29 pm UTC

    Skydancer, Blitz, Jadewind

  34. aaranay - April 27th, 2008 @ 7:44 pm UTC

I tried Hakkar, but it was “reserved”, probably due to a named in zul’gurub having that name :(
