Name That Pet: Kurasu’s Obsidian Raptor
Final Name: Kuroshi
Kurasu, a hunter from Emerald Dream (EU), as written in looking for help finding the perfect name for his obsidian raptor.
Kurasu writes:
I don’t play on a roleplay server, but rather like you do, I have internalized character story and concept. Comes from a long life of playing tabletop RPGs, I guess. :)
Kurasu’s one of the sterotypical hunters. He hunts for the challenge and the skill of it. He is the sort who likes to be noticed, and so he has never really owned a pet that wouldn’t turn heads. At least, not for long.
My primary pet is my beloved Suresh, the Deviant Moccasin that I picked up back at level 23 and have kept until this point (and until the end of time). However, it became obvious to me after looking at things that, while he is fantastic in a lot of smaller instances and parties, he’s probably not going to hold his own in a raid. In addition, he rules in world PvP (poison spit FTW!), but in arena his lack of dash will be a problem. So I decided that I would get myself a second pet: an arena pet.
But what kind of pet should I get? I tried a lot of them. Ravagers were powerful, but too ugly for me to stomach keeping around for long. A spider was a fun companion for a time, but I got tired of it after a while. Olm The Wise was a good catch, but the ‘owl’ never caught on for me. I’ve never been a cat person (no offense to the cat-lovers out there!), so my experiment with keeping around Siam-Rotam didn’t work out. Besides, after seeing four white lions in one day, I was sick of him!
It was on a trip through Dustwallow Marsh that I got my inspiration. I had missed the FP at the goblin town, so had gone to pick it up. There was a wanted sign posted for one ‘Goreclaw’. Curious, I took the quest and looked the raptor up. And what a gorgeous creature he was! I never liked the spiky look of the Outlands raptors, but the coloration of the Azeroth ones mostly bored me. This was one that had both: color *and* lack of spikes.
The one issue: he was 39 and I was 62 at the time.
Undaunted, I decided that I would capture him and make him my own. And obviously, at my level, this was an easy capture. But my raptor needed a lot of leveling. Fortunately, my training in kiting meant that he could just potter along beside me while I got him XP, and after two long, grueling days of almost steady grinding, Goreclaw, now ‘Raptor’, was level 62.
Which leaves me where I am today: walking around with a gorgeous obsidian raptor with the name ‘Raptor’. This will never do! I’m asking for a little help in getting him a good and proper name.
For information, my naming style up until now has been mostly flippant, or pick-and-choose. My dragonhawk I got from the Blood Elf newbie area was ‘SuicideRun’, or ‘Suey’ for short. My longest extent with a boar was with Bellygrub, who I named ‘Boaring’. My tauren is walking around with ‘WarFlamingo’, the pink tallstrider. Suresh, on the other hand, was a special pet who deserved a special name, so was named after an Indian god.
So how about it? Do you think you can get me a proper name for my raptor? Something to indicate a feral, deadly, rapacious creature? At least, that’s how I always view him.
Here is Kurasu and his raptor posing in the Blasted Lands.

Beautiful raptor! With the turquoise beads and the feathers, I’m thinking something Amerind . . . “Meeskoe,” Cheyenne for “Rascal.” Playful, meaningful, and I think goes well with “Kurasu.”
You have already mentioned his name a few times in your letter… Whenever my hunter tames a rare/named pet, I let them keep the name… who am I to rename my companion.
I never could understand why these raptors wear jewelry…
As far as a name, Grimlock. :) I haven’t really noticed if there are hundreds of Grimlocks running around but if I ever end up with a raptor that’s what I’d use.
Kurasu- Life.
Shi- Death.
Thus- Life and Death.
Never mess with a woman who owns her own Japanese dictionary lol.
Seidouyumi is really Seidou Yumi or Bronze Bow.
I agree with Anders, Goreclaw sounds feral, deadly and rapacious!
Hehe, I got this for my 70 hunter, grinding it up now, just recently, and was puzzling too what to name it.
A few ideas I had were:
Shade
Rancor
Not much at the moment, but again, hehe, I’m still looking. I’ll be sure to check back here often in the future.
Why not “Velociraptor” ? Sounds generic, but it’s the latin name for the fast but dangerous dinosaur.
Jabberwockee/Jabberwocky
after http://www.jabberwocky.com/carroll/jabber/jabberwocky.html
On my hunter when this raptor first came out I captured her because I agree she’s the best looking raptor available to players.
I named her Malystryx and kept her around for quite a while. Got the name from Dragonlance.
GL picking a name.
I agreee with the people who say keep goreclaw, its a good raptor name or for simplicity why not just Claw?
Raptor is just the shortened version of Velociraptor which is now used to describe the majority of the dromaeosaurid dinosaur family, for which Jurassic Park is to blame. (sorry to be picky but I’m a palaeontologist by trade:))
I also tamed this raptor, she was quite the pet! but i had to let her go cause she was too low lvl (and i did not really want to lvl her up) but she was a pretty good pet! but anyways lol, one of the names i like best for this color of raptor is “obsidia” cause its goes with her coloring ^^ and well thats the only name i can think of lol good luck nameing your raptor ^^
Dvalin,
I have no doubt that you get into the same kind of mood I do when people get their history blatantly wrong lol. I’m an Historian by trade, grew up with a huge interest in Paleontology though.
I still like mine Kurasu and Shi- Life and Death.
If you want a really unigue raptor, seek out the green raptors in Wetlands. The only raptors with no spikes or jewelry.
As for the name, though…
Yeah, stick with Goreclaw.
personally i like the name Shi that was mentioned and the reasoning behind it :D
lilbits 55 hunter of Laughingskull
Bitesize 54 ravager life long companion
I’ve got two ideas.
1. Obsidian. I know, kinda basic, but I just love that word.
2. Fungeki. Japanese for Fierce Attack, I believe. One of my personal favorites.
Aw, everyone comes up with cool japanese names.
The only japanese word I know, are “kawaii neko”
And I doubt you wanna call your raptor Cute cat -_-
Oi, but I got another idea: Tame a purple raptor and name him Barney! :D
If we’re going with Japanese, and you’re a dwarf which makes your raptor look much bigger. I’d name him Gojira (Godzilla)
My troll hunter tamed that guy soon as i hit 39, i have the black lion(Humar) as well. Hunter’s name is Rajji, lion’s name is Rhu, so i wanted something to go with them, finally i settled with Razer, nice feirce-sounding name & the odd spelling makes it less boring :)
Darkfang?
Here’s a few suggestions:
I don’t know if anyone has done it yet, but I have always wanted to name a pet “Imwithstupid” just like the novelty T-shirts. LOL
Ok, here’s a few…
1. Darwin
2. Clevergirl (A Jurassic Park reference)
3. Damnation
How bout’ Wrath simple yet terrifying
ok, i love raptors. i just adore them. al of my pets are raptors. i have a plain old bloodtalon tallisher i got him at lvl 6 and have had him since. i also got another pet, a cat lion. it was echayakee, and let me tell you im not a ct person rither lol. well i still have tallisher, named Mozart. but , when i was lvl 43 ( im lvl 44 ) i came across a very cool color raptor, Tethis in stranglethorn. he is a smooth colow blue and white.
Now about that name, i must tell you im a raptor fan and yes i have done the quest with goreclaw i dont haver him as a pet, but im working on a alt and defiitly getting him . i tell you to please pick this name, i am a raptor fan, big one. all of my pets are raptors.
The six names i would either pick are: 1. Masterpiece 2. Successful
3. Vallejo 4. Zaphod 5. Raptorgz and last but not least, 6. the original name, Goreclaw. ( i would choose Raptorgz.
I have a special name for raptors. I suggest you call it “Protego”. Got it off of the latest “Harry Potter” movie. It’s a spell that reflects a spell back onto the spell caster/a shield spell. And it’s Latin. It means “to protect”. Like a friend, in my guild said, it (raptors) protects you! lol
Well, Messyah sort of helped indirectly as well. The KuraBat (my Sporebat, so nickamed by my Guilders) now has a name of ‘ImWithStupid’. More than one person has called me stupid for having a Sporebat, so it fits! :)
As for the raptor, I can’t help but giggle girlishly at some of the names. ‘Feral and rapacious’. Definitely not much of a ‘Kawaii Neko’. Sorry Maree! :) Anyway! While I wasn’t considering Japanese for a name (again: it’s more a roleplaying thing, and my character isn’t Japanese; just has a name ‘that happens to sound Japanese’… cough cough) I did like the idea of ‘Shi’ to match with it. So I went with ‘Kuroshi, which is ‘Black Death’, to be able to match the coloration as well as bring in that ‘shi’ I liked so much. Thanks for the help on the ideas!
Our pleasure, Kurasu! I’ve updated the post to let everyone know the name you chose for the raptor.
I spent a lot of time thinking about a name for my black outland raptor. It insisted, that it was a Female Raptor and didn’t like beeing called all those cool and deadly sounding names. The solution to my dilemy came from a freind of mine who proposed “Blackpearl”. My Raptor loved it and who am I to disagre with her… :p
so, can anyone tell me rthe name chossen?
Funny, I have the same exact problem. I too have just tamed an Obsidian Raptor, he looks just like Goreclaw, except I found him in Zul’Drak (Northrend). Just an fyi, the new patches have made it so no matter what pet you tame lower lvl’d than you, they will become 5 lvls under and you can lvl them the rest from there. Lemme make this clearer:
65 Hunter tame a lvl 4 pet. The pet instantly become a lvl 60 (5 lvls under Hunter.) Tho if you tame a pet say…the 65 Hunter tames a 63 pet, the pet stays at 63. Blizz is getting better. :D
So anyway, yeah I just tamed an Obsidian Raptor exactly like yours. I think Blackpearl is pretty, but I want a brother for my Mottled Scytheclaw (the rare emerald green raptors of Wetlands.) I’ve had my Sytheclaw since lvl 26 (lowest lvl raptor there) and he’s now at lvl 78 with my 80 Night Elf Hunter. <3 He’s eaten the most of my cats, birds, wolves etc, but he’s been the strongest and most faithful and reliable pet to get the job done. You really can’t go wrong with those Scytheclaws. I did a Biology project over the Periodic Table on an element called Chromium. You guessed it! That’s how I got his name. Chromium is actually the chemical in glass bottle that gives them their emerald green color and is one of the strongest chemicals out there. Thus, Chrom Chrom was named. :3 SO! Back to the subject. I STILL need a name for my Obsidian raptor lol.
well raptorgurl why not just look at the names posted theyre all neat…. altho u probly already have a name chosen by now lol
