Petopia: Fake Skills and Allakhazam

The ‘fake’ pet skills that I posted about here a bit ago have been added to the Big List of Pet Skills on Petopia. There’s a short list at the bottom of the page, and a link to a Fake Pet Skills page with more info.

In addition, the individual pet pages at Petopia now have links to Allakhazam as well as Thottbot and Wowhead.

Thats just not fair! The “fake” skills would be awsome in real play

I’m always sad about that darn crab skill. Crabs could use that thorns/nature damage!

Also put me down as also loving the icon images you’re using!

Swoop and Throns would be great additions to the pet skills list. Perhaps with some alterations they’d be perfect not only for the specific pet, but maybe for a few others.

Swoop would be great on Carrion Birds, Owls and Bats. It would give us another pet set with a Charge like ability.

Thorns would also be great, though maybe just limited to the pet. Maybe have it work a little differently. Instead of it being a ten min cast time, it could act like the Shaman’s Lightning Shield where it has a set number of ticks before it fades and has to be recast.

Thank you once again for the wowhead links. Makes me a happy hunter.

    Hi Mania,
Just a quick and minor note. I was poking around Petopia, and went into the pets with special qualities/ behaviors section. (Forget its official name.) Anyway, in your comment about Arikara’s unusual animation when summoned you refer to Arikara as “he.” In the quest text however, Arikara is referred to as “she.”

For some reason the wording “fake pet skills” brought back memories of a slightly different subject.
Pet abilities made for several pet families (including horses!*) invented back in the original beta have been datamined, varying in effects from overpowered to useless. That list of abilities was unearthed by some people prior to Burning Crusade, and it was briefly passed around as a sweeping pet reform. These abilities may seem far-out, but they were once possible pet skills, and you can check them out on Wowhead or Thottbot if you wish.

*Note that whoever the rumormonger was, they removed the horse family skills in order for the rumor to sound more credible.

    Ket Shi,

I noticed that some of those pet skills were retooled and made into official skills. Some of them did seem rather over powered though.

Why not add a list of pet skills that exist in the wild but that are not available?

Such as net for spiders. You see tamable and non-tamable pets in the wild that have some interesting skills that are not available at all.

Additionally, you could add a page for frequent requested pet skills. For example, I would want to see resilience as trainable for pets.

Like the new look, takes a bit of getting used to is all.

Varsar and I have been making some suggestions about how to finish out pet skills on a different thread. I thought I’d repost them here to get some comments.

Crabs- Thorns, a Passive damage spell that consumes one charge each hit. This is a combination of the Fake Pet Skill and the Shaman spell Lightning Shield.

Crocolisks- Rend, a Damage over Time ability similar to the Warrior skill.

Hyena- same as Crocolisk, both animals tend to do similar behaviors in the wild.

Nether Rays- Lightning Breath. Nether Rays, Sporebats and Tripods all have a lightning teather type ability. I figured that this would be a good solution.

Spiders- Poison Spit similar to Serpent’s. Certain spider mobs do this.

Sporebats- Sporecloud, (instant, 30 sec CD, Deals X to Y damage and then Z damamge every 2 seconds over 10 seconds to all mobs in melee range, This ability causes a moderate amount of additional threat.), Lightning Breath. Sporebats do something similar ‘in the wild’.

Tallstrider- Screech, giving them the only land based application to that. This idea actually goes all the way back to where they got these mobs from. It is said that some actual flightless birds of old actually would use a scream/screech to intimidate enemies.

Turtles- Varsar recomended that this have a damage reflection component to it similar to the Improved PW Shield ability of a Discipline Priest.

Gorillas- Charge. Retool of Thunderstomp- Instant, CD 30 seconds, does X to Y damage to all mobs in melee range. Varsar recomended keeping it to a 30 second cool down. I recomended it be in melee range.

Wolf- Furious Howl’s focus cost reduced. This would allow for FH to be cast more often, boosting a Wolf’s overall DPS.

The sporecloud was completely Varsar’s idea. I just added it in to make this one post, and because I liked it.

Sporebats should have an aura, I think. One that heals very little and deals little damage to all allies/enemies in range (20 yards perhaps?) constantly. It would cost focus, but focus regeneration would be able to keep it going all the time. Thus, they could keep it up most of the time, while using growl.

Crocolisks could have a skill called deathroll, where the crocolisk and the victim are rooted, unable to act for 5 seconds. The cooldown could be 5 minutes, but it’d be an awesome stun. No damage done also, plus the pet can’t attack during that time. 5 minute cooldown would make it hard to take any drastic advantage of this in pvp (often, hehe =P ).

Spiders need a web, plain and simple. There’re already pets with poison skills, and a web sounds more fun. It would be a melee range attack, rooting the enemy for a few seconds, with a 2 minute cooldown.

Nether Rays don’t need a lightning breath, sheesh, wind serpents have that silly… they need a mana drain ability! Little cooldown, but they could drain a chunk of the enemy’s mana, which would be a channeled ability.

Hyenas need a heckling or giggle ability of sorts, perhaps one that would reduce enemy attack power or something. I was thinking of it as a fear, maybe 2 seconds of it, all in melee range, but that could be overpowered if not handled well…

Well, there’s my opinion. The other skills sound good, hehe.

  14. Seidouyumi - April 18th, 2008 @ 11:00 am EDT

Well, Ryno, a lot of why those skills were mentioned is that they’re in game already, or would take modifying existing skills. Part of it is also that any secondary root spell would cause a major nerf for the Hunter.

The reasons I though for having Nether Ray’s use Lightning Breath is because they’re relatives, the Tripod and the Sporebat, both have a lightning based attack, but also, as Casters, they get an actual chance to crit when hitting a mob with this skill.

The Tallstrider was suppose to have a healing aura originally, but it was pulled before the Hunter class was even implimented. Unfortunately, while it would be a great idea, it can never be.

  15. Ryno - April 18th, 2008 @ 11:05 am EDT

Hehe. Yeah, I just kinda went off on opinion, a lot of what I said is dreaming. But Blizzard shouldn’t be reduced to using other skills already in existence for pets, imho. I also didn’t really consider in game family traits or anything like that in the wild… and as for nerfing a hunter, well, we all know that won’t happen. =P

  16. Seidouyumi - April 18th, 2008 @ 11:25 am EDT

Well, Ryno, having unique family skills is always nice, unfortunately, as we’ve seen with Charge, it can lead to problems as the skill gets left in the dust because that family won’t show up again for ages and ages. I would love to see two families with a given unique skill that way we can get them more readily.

  17. Ryno - April 18th, 2008 @ 12:45 pm EDT

Blizzard should let pets gain rested exp while in the stables, with no cap, hehe. That way you could get some low pet, stable it, pick it up a few days or a week later, and level it even faster.

Or, Blizzard could have pets in the stable level, just at a very slow rate. So you could level one pet, and still have a few more gaining exp.

This would help with pets being distributed how they are… hehe. That or have buyable pets, costing a fortune, for the lazy hunters… though choosing which ones would be available to buy would be hard, hmm… plus that’s a lot of coding in one spot, hehe… ah well. Just ideas.

  18. Seidouyumi - April 18th, 2008 @ 3:42 pm EDT

    Ryno-

One idea that I’ve had kicking around in the back of my head is the idea of buying levels. It would, say, cost a lot of money to get a pet from level one to level 70, but it would really cut down on the agony of leveling up a given pet skin.

  19. Ryno - April 19th, 2008 @ 2:47 am EDT

Sounds like a winner to me. But again, hunters already have funds going out to things like ammo, quivers, etc., hehe, enough to worry about than paying for a pet to be leveled. Nevertheless, I like the idea of it as an option.
