Name That Pet: Equiroa’s Dragonhawk

Recently I received this well-written request for help from Equiroa, a Blood Elf hunter on an unnamed PvP server.

I fell in love with my first hunter in WoW years ago. I’m a very pet-centric hunter, loving BM spec and expecting my pet to pull more than his (or her) fair share. I’m not a role player, but I do gain an attachment to my pets on my hunters that doesn’t happen with my warlocks and their minions. And so I care greatly about the names I give my pets.

She continues:

I’ve started a new Blood Elf hunter, Equiroa (all my characters are named equi-something). She’s leveling on a PvP server (I hate PvP) with my boyfriend’s male BE mage. I’m more experienced with the Horde side of things than my boyfriend, so my hunter has taken on a bit of a domineering attitude. She decided, this strong willed character, that she would have a dragonhawk pet. Caster stats? Pshaw. I’ll kite, Coromandel (the mage) can learn to kite or can learn to keep his threat under mine / the pet’s (he’s doing great kiting so far). So a caster-stats Dragonhawk we have.

I took one look at this beautiful creature and was instantly reminded of a Tequila Sunrise guppy. I tried to name my Dragonhawk Tequila Sunrise (and TequilaSunrise) and was thwarted. I’d like to find a name in that basic vein, but I’m finding myself at a loss. The only suggestion I’ve heard was “DawningStar,” and that’s not really sitting well with me. I want a name that reflects both my dragonhawk’s beauty and my hunter’s fiery attitude.

Could you and your readers be of help?

I am certain that we can!

Equintess sounds good, because Equintessence is too long. :p

    Equitina? =P

I know you like Equi-something, so that’s the first thing that came to mind. =P Good luck.

    Ermmmm….
    Ummm…
    *Looks through encyclopidia*
    Flaming, Flaring — Ignescent
The latin name for Red-Tailed Hawk is B. jamaicensis. Maybe Jamai or Jamaicen, although they don’t really sound right to me.
But, I really do like Equinox.
(My friend suggested Equiknocks, but I like Equinox better ^^)

    Sunburn?
    Cinderella/Emberella?

I’m having a hard time thinking of pretty AND fiery names…

Oh, my. I think my writeup was just a little unclear. My pet names don’t need to start with equi-something, and in fact it’s better if they don’t! I have so many characters that pets named equi-something just become too many equis to keep straight. For an idea of what I mean, see my rarely updated character chart.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Ignescent “feels” pretty good to me - it’s certainly in the vein I’m hoping for!

Lucifer (Son of the Morning) might work?

  9. Bloodshrike - March 11th, 2008 @ 3:08 am EDT

How about Kestrel? I remember reading the Westmark trilogy by Lloyd Alexander, and 2 of the characters names stuck with me. Shrike and Kestrel. Check the link to see the marking on the bird.

Once again I find myself back to Ember, Amber, Blaze, Flare, that kind of thing…
But actually, more than anything, I knew a redtailed hawk once, named Fiona, fiercely loyal, but dominant, possessive and with a mean streak…

Azrael, the angel of death. I don’t know, I just love names that has some angelish touch to it, but it might not fit with your dragonhawk.

Hmm Exona, Luara, Furrion, Dawn or just simply tequila or sunrise

    1.) Cinder

2.) Mushu (The dragon from the movie “Mulan”.)

3.) Kiyo (Kiyo was a Japanese waitress who, when spurned by a priest, turned herself into a dragon to seek revenge.)

4.) Glaurung (The first of all Dragons in Middle-Earth.)

5.) Apep or Apophis (Egyptian mythological names of the serpent that chased Ra.)

Valefor? It’s the bird summon from FFX, looks kinda like a dragonhawk I think. I named my first ‘hawk pet that.

    Variations:
    Valyfor
    Vallefor
    Vailefor
    Valefyor
    etc….

A lot of my names for both my characters and pets come from AD&D’s minor deities.
For your Dragonhawk, I would suggest Fierna (or, as I’m fond of spelling it, Fiernaa). Fierna is a fiery temptress who rules her lavabed domain with her father. She’s high spirited and very powerful.
Fiernaa is the name of my Orc Shaman, who loves fire the most out of the four elements she commands.

Bit of a hunter nutter myself, I d go for Sunfire (on account of the blood elves fascination with the sun) of perhaps Hyperion (who, unless I am mistaken, represents the the dawn/dusk cycle of the sun falling and rising in greek mythology)

I could be wrong about the second one,you might want to check before actually naming him.

  20. Kahlua - March 13th, 2008 @ 2:27 am EDT

Naur, sindarin for flame (sindarin is the language that tolkien created for the elves)

    Pyihel, means sapphire tears

    Aine, Sky or sun goddess

    Anor, Sindarin for sun

  21. Dulin - March 13th, 2008 @ 5:31 am EDT

For my own dragonhawk, I went with the ‘dragon’ motif and coloration, and then where I got it: Quelastraez. Other names I’d had in the running at the time included ‘Sindostraeza’ and ‘Belorestraez’ for rough ‘blood dragon (f)’ and ’sun dragon (m)’ conjugations.

  22. Emowin - March 13th, 2008 @ 11:07 am EDT

    Uruloki-small wingless dragons from Tolken.
Fafnar-Norse myth name of a dwarf who transformed into a dragon, the symbol of greed (male)

  23. Kerub - March 13th, 2008 @ 2:28 pm EDT

I named my blood falcon (also a dragonhawk) Tinder, thats small burning embers
but its close to tender too , so to me, means fire and close to the heart

  24. Ayrie - March 13th, 2008 @ 2:42 pm EDT

    Ignacio
its latin for “born of fire”
had a hawk named that for a while myself, but ended up going with a kitteh instead. seems fitting for both you and your choice of creature companion =)

  25. Cotytto - March 13th, 2008 @ 4:22 pm EDT

    Vallenari
It’s last name of Michelle Pfeiffer’s character from the movie Tequila Sunrise.Cute name and some people will get the reference.

I’m not sure if you’re a Star Trek fan, but I remembered a drink Data made for Troi in one episode called a Samarian Sunset. It was really beautiful and reminded me of the color of the dragonhawk.

Got myself a dragonhawk today (have you any idea how long it takes to get to eversong from menethiel harbor!? Also only being lvl 23, was quite fun to run through the plaguelands :P but i digress) And called it Adarna.

Is the shortened name of the Philippines equivalent to the Phoenix Ibong Adarna, and thought it was rather fitting.

well, i have a Wind Serpent i got from netherstorm, i love him and his lightning bolts hehe but i named him Blitzeflügel, meaning Lightning wings in german(native country of mine) and i always get questions about his name :) oh, i even have the boar from EPL, i named him Schweinfeind lol (means Pig enemy)

maybe u could use Verbrennenflügel, roughly meaning burning wings. i think its a lil long lol but there are many variations u could use, if anything it does sound kind of fierce…that is if ur enemy can even pronounce it lol

anyway….i don’t think i helped really and all lol, but good luck on your quest for the perfect name, but its always worth it to have the right name for your little buddy :)
