PTR 2.4.0: Hunter Updates

The Public Test Realms continue to update at a frantic pace, but this last update (just today) brought some interesting changes for hunters. In addition to the previous hunter patch notes, we also now have the following two notes:

Hunter

  • Multi-Shot: This ability will no longer strike any secondary targets which are under the effect of crowd-control spells that break on taking damage. i.e. Polymorph, Sap, etc.
  • Track spells will now persist after death.

That’s a solid “Yay!” from me on both of those!

There are a couple of interesting (to me!) non-hunter changes as well.

Professions

  • Fishing: Removed the level requirement from the expert fishing book, The Bass and You.

Quests

  • The daily quest Escape from Skettis has had its reward tuned down. (Booo! - ed.)

World Environment

  • Critters: Ambient level 1 creatures will no longer be picked as subsequent targets by chaining spells and abilities. (I wonder if they will still be valid targets for Multi-Shot? - ed.)

As always, you can find the complete and updated Test Realm Patch Notes on the WoW website. And my thanks to WoW Insider for doing a line-by-line comparison so I don’t have to.

That’s overall good news, I think, not least the multi shot. I’ve mostly removed it from my bars when in instances, so I wouldn’t accidentally hit it…

Nice to see changes to our actual problems ;-)

crap, I might just have to shuffle points from my minor BM supplements into barrage & imp Bar

what disturbs me more is the arena representation of hunters in 2000 and 1850 ratings. the last time i seen something like that hunters were more represented than shamans. now even shamans have it easier getting the high rankings even after all those changes. when will the devs learn that until they fix our line of sight issues hunters are garbage in arenas.

my idea: make steady shot a “channeled spell”, so as long as we can see them when we cast it, it hits them. even that change i dont see making a huge difference either… 90% of the time the only shots i use are silencing and steady shots… cant stop long enough to do anything else.

what i always wanted them to do is make it so hunters can shoot on the run, having to stop and shoot kind of defeats the purpose of hunters. i guess they would become too op but still they can make it so mobility adds a certain amount to shot timer. a 2sec shot is 4 when mobile. oh well guess you got to do with whats available until they decide something has to be done like with the deadzone.

Honestly, we should get a new aspect at level 80(or somewhere between 70-80) that allows us to shoot on the run. Have it deal less damage, have less accuracy, or increase the time between shots. Aspect of the Mongoose maybe? I dunno, however, I completely sympathize with any hunter trying to get a decent rank in Arena. After you get through all the newb groups it’s all LOS LOS LOS. Sad really.

Finally they realised the fail of Multi-shot and fixed it. Now it is way safer to use in dungeons and over all, because you dont lose one of the shots for a critter or accidentally aggro a mob… GOOD JOB Blizzies!

@5 We’ve discussed that at TKAsomething.com and dubbed it “Butt Pew Pew” since you’d be shooting arrows out the butt. Most think it’s too powerful an ability for general hunter use, but could be a viable option if it was just for auto shot and was a 41+ point talent.

They’ll never “fix” LoS issues in arena as it is part of the strategy. If every board was just a flat expanse, it would get really old, really fast, and let’s be honest, there’d still be LoS issues. BPP is probably the solution at some point. At least it’s a buff to raiders too with all the encounters where you’re moving.

The multi-shot thing will still be an issue due to lag. Even now, I’ve had my pet attack or had a melee go off just as a trap does, and it breaks.

I’m still waiting for the day: “Professions - Fishing is now fun.”

Man, I must be the only hunter who *liked* being able to multi-shot CCed targets. What if the freezing trap is at 1 second and my MS cooldown is up? I wanna shoot ‘em when I wanna shoot ‘em!

I have played my hunter long enough to learn how to avoid breaking CC when I have to. This might have something to do with me preferring PvP and rarely using freezing trap anyway.

Still, I prefer MS as-is. This change just feels like dumbing it down to please a certain subset of PvEers who would rather just spam shot rotations.

to bad we cant get a toggle for the multishot thing.i personaly like the though of being able to use that after trapping something to pull aggro off the softer members of my group without haveing to move to one side first…

I just started doing arena last night after getting most my arena gear I can get with honor points now. Im already QQing about the LOS issues =D I like Gishar’s idea of a new aspect. Although I would have to stack more AP and Hit rating if they lowered accuracy and dmg. BUT I think I would deal with that over not hitting them at all…

Blizzard managed to dumb the game up more every day. Making it so people who are less-than-intelligent can effectively play this game is going to ruin the experience for the more-intellectual players.

This is all about Blizzard trying to target a broader audience in time for WotLK. With that in mind, I offer you all this piece of pure gold advice.

KEEP THE GUILD YOU ARE IN THE SAME - Settle differences, make peace, do whatever you have to do to keep your current “working” guild in-tact and you can continue to enjoy the game. Otherwise, you’ll be left dealing with someone who buys an epic 70 and can’t play worth a lick.

  12. marzix - March 6th, 2008 @ 1:11 pm EST

heh, @11… im in a pure pvp guild who has like 1 semi-set group that does kara for badges every once in a great while. who knows, if we all got the badge loot when sunwell comes out, we just might have the gear to do ZA. not that i ever go to kara, or would go to ZA, but what you say is so true.

  13. Ansawa - March 6th, 2008 @ 4:51 pm EST

Well, the multishot thing isn’t too bad, though I’ve just trained myself not to use it in rotations if there’s something in the Zone of Terror, as BRK calls it.

Having it no longer hit critters, though, that would be sad. :( I like getting a 2k multishot crit on a random crab in SV.

Or, better yet, missing it with multishot and having it aggro onto me. “Crab hits you for 1″ is a hilarious addition to my combat log.

  14. Deathbang - March 6th, 2008 @ 5:25 pm EST

Ok tracking is annoying when you die but I’m more grateful for the drop down track of 2.3(Maybe it was there before but I didn’t know) But the multishot thing is awesome! I don’t know how many times I hit multishot for dps(I try not too because my tanks aren’t usually warriors so the aggro breaks if I do usually) just as the mage hits polymorph to put some cc! Since I don’t have aimed yet multi is a main dps and its humiliating to have your whole group ticked because you forgot about the two cced enemies!

  15. Arides - March 6th, 2008 @ 5:52 pm EST

I think the benefits from Multi not breaking crowd control and being able to use it full-time (increased DPS in PVE situations, a quick-cast AOE for arenas and/or other PVP) make up for any wounded ego I might have over not having to micromanage it any longer.

I’ve actually noticed of late my tracking sometimes lasting through death (and sometimes not). I wonder if it’s a bug being made into a feature.

Finally, critters: Slave Pens. Waiting for pull. Our guild uberlock gets bored and says on Vent “Watch me pwn this frog”. Shoots level 1 frog with level 70 talented shadowbolt. Frog resists. Frog hops over to uberlock and starts level 1 whacking him. Now we know what really happened: that frog was an escapee from the 2.4 PTR.

  16. Maevet - March 7th, 2008 @ 12:46 am EST

MD + DS + multiple critters = some one in the party gets new ‘combat pets’

  17. Priestholy - Dmaw - Vendi vidi vici - March 7th, 2008 @ 3:52 pm EST

hunters do not have problems in arena, it IS a l2p issue, sorry to say it.

  18. THe Ghostie - March 8th, 2008 @ 4:57 am EST

I am a hunter. Some time ago, I bought a slot in the stable. Tamed another pet. Now, my stable is locked. I can not purchase new slots, swap pets etc.

I have delted WTF folder Cache and everything else blizzard have told me to do, but still locked. I Guild friend has logged my account on his PC and still locked.

    Anyone had this before?

  19. Seidouyumi - March 8th, 2008 @ 4:59 pm EST

For those who’ve been attacked by Frogs, I’ve had that happen too. It’s rather funny, though I’ve thought abut it. Wouldn’t a HUGE toad be an interesting pet addition to the game? Skills are Bite, Pummel, and Slime.

  20. Kristy - March 10th, 2008 @ 3:59 am EDT

I’m glad that they finally fixed Multi-shot.

  21. Idoru - March 10th, 2008 @ 5:50 am EDT

For those that say that MS is fine as it is:

No, it is not fine as it is. MS is not an AoE (blame the stealthed rogues who whined) and therefore it should not break CC.
