Name That Pet: Airi’s Wind Serpent

Airi, a level 70 Dwarven Beast Mastery Hunter on the realm of Drenden, e-mailed me last week. He’d like some help naming his new wind serpent. (And isn’t Airi an excellent name for a wind serpent owner?)

Airi writes:

I need a name for my Wind Serpent, that I’ve been leveling with for around 4 long levels. I normally have no trouble at all naming my pets. I usually just do one of two things. First, I check my Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion guide and look at interesting suggested names for the races of that game. Secondly, I often look at Wikipedia, searching the generic name of the pet that Blizzard has before you tame it, or searching for a more specific version of that name.

For example, at level 43, I tamed a Hyena in Tanaris, just outside of Gadgetzan. After thinking he looked cute and seeing he had a higher rank of Dash, I quickly ran back to Gadgetzan, and stabled my current pet. After taming him, I didn’t like any of the names in my game guide, so I looked up “Hyena” on Wikipedia. After realizing there were 4 species of Hyenas, I clicked the link to the “Spotted Hyena” article, my Hyena’s skin being spotted. I read about famous hyenas in movies, in pop-culture, and in history. After not being pleased with any of the Lion King Hyena names, I was about to give up when I caught site of the Binomial Name of the Spotted Hyena, Crocuta crocuta. As I had a particular fondness for Latin, I chose that as my hyena’s name, and am very pleased with him and his name.

However, with this new pet, my Wind Serpent, I am completely clueless. I can’t find a name in my game guide, on Wikipedia, or (it makes me sad to say this), Mania’s Arcania. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I take multiple screenshots of my pets before I dismiss any of them, and would like to know if you or anyone else does this as well. My favorite is to hit Alt-Z and turn off the entire HUD, then use Eyes of the Beast to set him up for his photoshoot.

Airi and his unnamed wind serpent

Name suggestions for Airi’s new wind serpent? And does anyone else take shots of their pets before they dismiss them? I like that idea, although I’ve had some many pets over the years I’m afraid I’d run out of disk space …

If you like Latin, how about Ventus (Latin for wind).

  2. cloudmonkey - March 4th, 2008 @ 9:12 pm EST

How about Zephyr or Zephyrus for another wind-related name.
I once named a wind serpent Sizzle for its lightning breath attack.
Chrysopelea is the name of the genus of flying (really gliding) snakes.
Fulgora is the personification of lightning as a goddess, from the Latin root Fulgur-.

Hmmm, well, “Bird-snake” in latin is AvesSerpentes but that wouldn’t fit with that many letters. But I looked up “serpent” in my reverse latin dictionary and it had a few things like Cockatrice, but I looked down and saw one that I personaly liked.

“Serpent in the Headress of Egytian Kings = Uraeus” Uraeus may be a nice name!

  4. Ansawa - March 4th, 2008 @ 10:08 pm EST

I went with Radiance for a wind serpent of the same skin. (I eventually switched back to an Azerothian wind serpent for my raiding pet, because the Outland wind serpents have a gimpy-looking flight animation. :( Which is sad, because they’re really pretty creatures.)

You could always go with Zeus or Thor for a mythological name (yay lightning bolts!).

  5. Bobo & SgtPork - March 4th, 2008 @ 10:08 pm EST

I’m gonna suggest “Fieri,” altho it may seem tacki :P

  6. Felandra & Spooks - March 4th, 2008 @ 10:52 pm EST

    There are many possibilities.

Thor - Norse god of thunder and lightning, obviously the latter part is the good stuff, and Thor is a pretty brawny guy. So it is quite fitting for a DPS pet. (DOH already mentioned)

Quetzalcoatl - The Aztec Feathered Serpent god. Scary god… But the name might be too long and too hard to pronounce fast.

    Tezla - Tezla coil anyone?

  7. Drakkena - March 4th, 2008 @ 11:39 pm EST

Quatzequatl: Winged God - Feather Serpent

Though these updated Wind Serpents don’t have the feathered Plum of their non-outland cousins I do think it suits a Wind Serpent ^^

Or if you don’t like the long name you can use Quetzal - which implies something divine or precious

  8. Schadenfreude - March 4th, 2008 @ 11:55 pm EST

My wind serpents were my PvP pets for a while, so I liked naming them “Blitzkrieg”; literally, “lightning war” in German.

  9. Paikya - March 5th, 2008 @ 1:06 am EST

    I like Thor

  10. Breledorm (EU-Aszune) - March 5th, 2008 @ 1:49 am EST

I have a polar bear named “Zixten” so when i got me a PvP-pet at lvl 60 i named him “Blixten”.

Blixten means “lightning bolt” i swedish.

If you go for the Winged serpent sun god make sure u google it for properly spelling just incase someone missspelled it lol no offense im pretty sure the first one is correct and the other was just one finger faster then the otehr i do it all the time -.-

Next Hoorah for the Dwarven hunters your not a hippy and ur not a Horde :D

last idk why but Cataclysm sounds like an awesome name for ur Wind Serpent and please spellcheck that i just pulled the spelling outta thin air, but its a very firm and powerful name.

  12. Saranette - March 5th, 2008 @ 2:10 am EST

Like many I’m sure, I like to look up weapon names. I actually almost went with Mjolnir or Gungnir with my trusty Arikara. I ended up settling with Gram though, nice and short.

The actual name of the guy who invented the AC current and described the radio wave was Nicoli Tesla; the guy who invented radio was Marconi.

You could go with the major proponent of DC current, Eddison; or with Wyvern, the name for a mythological species of winged snake.

The origin of the word wyvern comes from the 13th century word wyver, which comes from the French wyvere meaning “viper” and “life”. Other names: Wyver, Lindworm, Lindorm, Wouive, Vouivre; sometimes pictures with 2 legs or the head of a woman with a ruby between the eyes.

The Dragon of Henham (http://www.henham.org/henhan_dragon.htm) was a flying serpent -

    Egypt:
    Aapep the snake demon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aapep

    Mertseger the cobra goddess, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mertseger

Buto aka Wadjet, snake-goddess of the city of Buto http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wadjet

    Other snake-gods and demons:
Jormungand and Aido-Hwedo the Rainbow Serpent lie under the ocean, so perhaps aren’t what you’re looking for here; the Ourobouros eats it’s own tail and is the Alchemical symbol for purifying.

  14. Wolfington - March 5th, 2008 @ 6:39 am EST

I just now remembered a name that might fit your massive, powerfull pet — Herculean!

    Good luck naming ^.^

  15. Thymeril - March 5th, 2008 @ 8:42 am EST

I tamed the level 69 one from Netherstorm on my Nelf hunter, Thymeril, and named him Tractor (since he shoots tractor beams from his breath!)

I also like, from the movie Dodgeball, Blazer.
“Meet Blade. And Lazer. And now Blazer.”

  16. Nidhogg - March 5th, 2008 @ 8:44 am EST

Well I named my Wind Serpent “Masaru” It’s japanese (or was it chinese?) for Victory!

  17. Messyah - March 5th, 2008 @ 10:30 am EST

    Here are my two suggestions:

(1.) Caduceus simply because the Staff of Hermes looks like a Wind Serpent (and has serpents in its dipiction).

(2.) Nerilka, who is a character from the Dragonriders of Pern series.

  18. Arides - March 5th, 2008 @ 1:04 pm EST

The person who helped me tame my Soulflayer from ZG insisted I name it “Trousers”. This was not helpful. I ultimately veered away from specific serpent names, calling her Rani (princess) instead, but some names I was tossing around before that while my friend kept whispering me “Trouuuuuserrrrsss” were:

Quetzal: This is part of the name of the Aztec feathered serpent god Quetzelcoatl. It’s a South American bird with long plumes in its tail which looks quite a bit like a wind serpent when it flies. Doesn’t shoot lightning out of its beak, alas, but one can’t have everything.

Inazuma, Arashi: Dictionary definitions of “lightning” and “storm”, respectively, in Japanese. Yeah, I know–fanboi Japanese ftl, but they *sound* nice.

Nagaina: The female cobra in Kipling’s “Rikki-Tiki-Tavvi”. Unfortunately he named his snakes with the Hindi for cobra which is, of course, “naga”. I debated if Nagaina was too close to “naga” to keep people from telling me about my “mistake” in-game and decided it wasn’t. The name I ultimately used was also Hindi, though.

  19. Yogsoggeth - March 5th, 2008 @ 2:05 pm EST

I named My Pet Wind Serpent Luicifer, Mostly because Satan wasn’t an Available name.
After 2months off line I log in and find my pet renamed back to its standard name “Wind Serpent”
I understand, The Lord and Master of All Evil can not be Owned… thats fair enough…

  20. Ceravan - March 5th, 2008 @ 2:22 pm EST

looks like a Scarlet or Blitz name would fit the windserpent as well.

  21. Emowin - March 5th, 2008 @ 2:32 pm EST

I had a wind Serpent once who I named Strike

  22. Emowin - March 5th, 2008 @ 2:33 pm EST

Oh and Yes I take picks on my pets when and if I ever let them go. Onces I keep not so much but My feance says I have to many hunters. But I ask how can one tame all the pets they want unless they have a butt load of them. MORE STABLE SLOTS FOR THE WIN!

  23. MrPrim - March 5th, 2008 @ 3:29 pm EST

Since we’re going in a mythological lightning theme in these posts, here’re a few more options:

Zeus - Easy one, Greek lightning God. Duh. Stupid. NEXT!

Indra - A bit more obscure to us Westerners, Indra is the Hindu storm deity. In the Vedas he’s the big boss of the pantheon, but by the time the Upanishads and such roll around, he’s deemphasized. These days he is not a major focus of religious devotion, though he is still counted amongst Hinduism VAST pantheon of deities.

Perun - The Norse Thor. I’m naming my baby Perun when I get around to taming him.

Raiden - Japanese. He’s loud and ugly and boisterous.

Susanoo - Also Japanese, though he’s more of a storm god than a lightning god.

Tlaloc - Is the Aztec rain god.

Shango - A powerful Voodoo Lwa and Yoruba Orisha, patron of thunder and the Sky.

Personally, when I grab my Wind Snake, I’m probably gonna go with Shango. My cat is named Samedi, so I figure I’ll stick to my Voodoo Troll naming conventions. I wish I could go with Perun… but I’ve already locked myself down.

  24. MrPrim - March 5th, 2008 @ 3:31 pm EST

Oi. For Perun, I meant the “Russian” Thor. It’s not another name for Thor, merely a similar deity, both surely stemming from some similar Indo-European root deity. OR they’re cousins.

    Kissing cousins.

Let that percolate in yer brain, I dare ya.

  25. Jayhawk - March 5th, 2008 @ 3:33 pm EST

    Cinnabar might work?

  26. Concrete - March 5th, 2008 @ 4:33 pm EST

I called my red windserpent “Sparkplug” I got a white one now i have no idea what to name

  27. Deplobius - March 5th, 2008 @ 5:41 pm EST

I’ll second “Arashi”, for it’s meaning and that it kinda matches the hunter’s name. “Here come Airi and Arashi.” It has a bit of a ring to these ears.

Also, after my third dismissed pet, I started taking pictures of everything I tame before I dismiss them. I suppose I’ve become a tad sentimental about pixelated, imaginary animals, and I wish to commemorate their valiant service in teaching my main pets new tricks. Ha ha ha.

    Happy hunting!

  28. Rasen - March 5th, 2008 @ 5:42 pm EST

    Mine’s called Tesla.

  29. Deathbang - March 5th, 2008 @ 5:50 pm EST

Dusk, his wings look like a setting sun to me

  30. Kahlua - March 6th, 2008 @ 3:33 am EST

Aine, it means Sky or sun goddess.
Anor, which is Sindarin for Sun (sindarin is the language Tolkien invented for the elves)
    Bain, Sindarin for Beautiful
    Gwaeron,Sindarin for Wind
    Hurricane
Nagafen, it is a very famous and hard to kill dragon in the MMORPG Everquest (1+2)
Shadowflame, mostly because its both black and red.

  31. Bill Hall - March 6th, 2008 @ 4:51 am EST

how about Ehecatl which is Nahuati for wind serpent

  32. Bloodspatter - March 6th, 2008 @ 3:45 pm EST

For windserpents I like names after storms - How about Tempest?

  33. Me - March 6th, 2008 @ 4:54 pm EST

I like mystic type stuff sooooo DeathWing AirBlood or AirFang very odd pet names I know but this is coming from the girl who named her Humar Superstition

  34. Ansawa - March 6th, 2008 @ 4:56 pm EST

I want to second Perun, here. Awesome, awesome name.

And it makes me want to go tame a watery pet (or maybe a Coilskar cobra) to name Rusalka or Vodyanoi.

  35. Seidouyumi - March 7th, 2008 @ 2:51 pm EST

Inazuma is the Japanese for Lightning. Of course, that’s my Shaman’s name.

Let me see. . .over the years I’ve had a Wolf named Kiba (Fang), a Carrion Bird named Igor, a Gorilla named George, a Bat named Jim (for Jim Steinman), a Raptor named Bender, a Cat named Katana, a Croc named Nibbler, a Turtle named Om, a Wolf named Angua, and Wolf named Delphine.

For a Windserpant like this, Spike works. Quetz or Coatl are good names for for a Windserpent. I’ll have to think some more about it.

  36. Hellsfury(my hunts name) - March 8th, 2008 @ 4:08 pm EST

I want to second Indra, and Shangoo, both very rare/unused names. Would make your pet stand out for sure, plus it’s somthing you’ll remember. I’m naming my pet ethier, love those names.

  37. Buxton - March 8th, 2008 @ 6:10 pm EST

My “main” pet is a windserpent named Kiyo. I found this from Wikipedia also; she’s a spurned wench who delved into magic and turned herself into a dragon. Seemed fitting :)

My boar is called Matilda. See if you can find out why…

    Buxton (Druid)/Corbetti (several Hunters)

  38. DaiseachBlathanná - March 8th, 2008 @ 10:29 pm EST

I am a bit of a noob but im irish and i like the irish for “wind” which is “Gaofar”..

i dunno im just trying to help lol

  39. DaiseachBlathanná - March 8th, 2008 @ 10:32 pm EST

hello ! the irish guy again!! my pet is named “Setanta” because that is the name of an old irish storybook hound that fought “Cuchulann” at the battle of meabh and Ruairí….another good name…..Ruairí

  40. Dethfire - March 8th, 2008 @ 10:43 pm EST

I would name him arkj ( Ark-K-j) or (ark-cage) are the how it sounds I have a recriting guild named kittens on emerald dream sever if you put me on your friends list if you catch me on wisper me ” i would like to join kittens” i will add you.

  41. Seidouyumi - March 8th, 2008 @ 11:25 pm EST

Not to disagree with DaiseachBlathanná, but he’s got his story wrong. Setanta (prounounced Sheytantah) is the true name of the Hound of Cullain (Cu Chulainn).

Hm…getting into Japanese myth and legend, Orochimaru was an evil snake who fought the toad Jiraya and his friend, the slug Tsunade. And, yes, I know that they got folded into the story Naruto.

To go into modern pop culture- Voldemort. If you want to get twisted, from the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy- Moldybutt.

From Buddhaism- Muchalinda is a serpent who helped protect the Buddha.

Ryuujin- Japanese mythology, the Dragon God or King Dragon.

Ok, odd ball one- Blitz or Blitzer. Blitz is the German for Lightning. In English, it means a fast attack meant to do a lot of harm fast. I’m not sure how many people out there would use this name.

I take names very serious. Right now, my Hunters have two pets (Three hunters, but one is only lvl 6). The Orc Hunter’s pet is named Igor. Igor’s a Carrion Bird. The Blood Elf Hunter has a pet named Akatsuke (prounounced Akatskay). Akatsuke’s an Owl. Akatsuke is Japanese for Dawn, but also means Begining or Ending.

  42. mammy - March 9th, 2008 @ 12:10 am EST

Seidouyumi - you must be a very boring person IRL.

  43. wick - March 10th, 2008 @ 11:59 am EDT

name it Dave, or Roger or something like that…i think it’s funny and people get a helluva kick out of it. :)

  44. Kaelna - March 10th, 2008 @ 3:45 pm EDT

I suggest Ouroboros. It is the serpent that is eating its tail, from some kinda mythology :D

  45. Seidouyumi - March 10th, 2008 @ 5:51 pm EDT

    Mammy,

Once people get use to how I talk, which I admit is a bit stilted and arcane, they tend to like me a lot, and even find me rather funny. Usually in forums and chat I come off very formal. It comes from years of living in an academic setting.

However, most people don’t find me boring. In fact, they get tired of my enthusiasm over so many different things in life.

  46. Baxtorian - March 10th, 2008 @ 5:56 pm EDT

What about “Nefarian”?Your pet looks like a dragon and Nefarian is dragon king..I have same pet as you and name “Nefarian” looks good.

  47. Mama Druid - March 10th, 2008 @ 6:00 pm EDT

I looked up serpent names for a hunter and liked the following:

Awanyu (also Avanyu) - “Represented as a horned or plumed serpent with curves suggestive of flowing water or the zig-zag of lightning…”

Aethelinda - Anglo-saxon name meaning Noble Serpent. I’m actually using this name on a hunter.

  48. Wolfington - March 19th, 2008 @ 4:19 pm EDT

    Me-
Loove the name Superstition! Same legue as Sorrow, and Pleaseure. (thinking of naming my Mazzaranache that ^^)
I do like the tribal names too. I had a Goreclaw the Ravenous named Heavyfoot, and a temporary Croc named Heavytail.. My brother also has Goreclaw, named Lackjaw.

Cool names. Weird names. Love it!
