Introducing: Roderick — Or Maybe Stabby …

No, I didn’t give in and make another alt. Roderick — or Stabby, or whatever my husband eventually decides to name him — is a real-life addition to our household. He’s a hedgehog.

I wanted a picture to put here, but 1) he’s very shy and hasn’t come out of his little box yet, 2) when you look in the box, all you can see is some spines, and 3) we’ve mostly been asleep since we got home from picking him up.

See, there aren’t any hedgehogs for sale near us, but we found a breeder who lives about three hours away. She let us reserve a baby and held it for us until it was weaned and ready to leave home. She e-mailed us a few days ago to let us know that Roderick-Stabby was ready, and that to cut down on our trip to come pick up him she would meet us in a town about two hours drive from our place at 10 am on Sunday morning.

Let’s see … it’s two hours away and we need to be there at 10 am. So we need to leave here at 8 am. Problem: We normally go to bed at 8 am.

What can I say? We’re night owls — we do our best work at night. There’s no shame in it. And one of the reasons we’re getting a hedgehog is because they’re nocturnal …

So I went to bed at 4 am and “slept” for 3 hours (which mostly involved lying quietly with my eyes closed, but it was better than nothing), then got up, downed too much caffeine, and drove four four hours almost straight (with a 5 minute break in the middle to accept the hedgehog). And then we crashed for several hours until our abused bodies woke us up in confusion. We are definitely getting too old for this.

The good news, I suppose, is that we are waking up just about the same time as Roderick-Stabby. Maybe we’ll even get to see more than 5 spines of him tonight.

  1. Did he come with “dash”? :-p

Gratz on the RL pet! I hope and pray he proves to be a good companion to you guys. Good luck with the naming (I, personally, like Roderick over Stabby, for what it’s worth).

  2. A hedgehog pet? Now that’s new to me…
Congrats on getting one, though. =)
Like Deplobius, I’d go for Roderick.

  3. At least you dont need Bloodlust, Drums of Battle and a caster meta gem to get your hands on him.
    Congratulations!

  4. I had one for about 5 years they make very good pets don’t forget that they like a dust bath now and then her name was Nairobi

  5. I used to have an Albino African Pygmy Hedgehog. They are extremely unique pets, and alot of fun once they get used to you. Heres a few tips from an experienced handler…

get an old shirt or other piece of clothing, get both you and your hubby’s scents on it, tear off a piece, and place it in his cage/enclosure. This will allow him to get comfortable with your scents, and will make you friends much faster.

Get a good pair of rawhide gloves for handling. this is for a few reasons… one, if he happens to bite you, your in for a trip to the hospital, Hedgehogs gnash their prey, and he will rip into your fingers and not let go, stiches will be required, lol. and 2.) those spines hurt, and you could damage them by handling him roughly if he happens to stick you (accidental jumping from the shock). you’ll only need these for a little while, once he gets used to you handling him, he’ll keep the spines down and they will be soft as hair.

I love those little guys, they are alot of fun, and like I said before, very unique. If you need anymore advice, ask away. My little guy (Snowball) unfortunetly passed after only 3 years, but I have a ton of great memories from him.

  6. Oooooooh a hedgehog. They are so cute ^^ Good luck on breeding him, and dont teach him Cower or you will never see more than 5 of his spines :D

  7. I second the Sonic,
but I guess that only works if he has Dash.
I’d call it Stabby after Sonic.
But Roderick probably should win for conversation sake.

(“Hi, do you have any hedgehog food? Mr. Stabby is hungry!”)
    >.>

    lol
I’m sure he’ll be loved no matter what he is called.

  8. Aww congrats on the new pet sounds cute. I used to have rats, but then I got my cat…….kinda went the opisit dierection there didnt I. Ha ha no my cat didnt eat the rats, unfortunatly I was alergic to them every one of their tinny claws made me itch. Hope your not alergic to your new buddy. Stabby for the win!

  9. Grats on the new little buddy! Hey, that gives me a great idea for a new pet type, a porcupine based defensive pet. Basically a tortoise that has a dam. to attackers, Thorns-like ability. Would be great for holding aggro. At least in melee.

  10. awesome, congratz on the hedge hog! I always wanted one :\ they are sooo CUTE!
what ever you name him he’ll be as cute!
    (name him Stabby)

  11. Stabby McStabbins!

Grats on the new RL pet Mania. Maybe you should wait a bit before naming him. Stabby would most definitely be appropriate if either of you happen to get pricked, er… stabbed!
