Name That Pet: Katta’s Tiger

Katta, a hunter from Ghostlands, writes:

Katta is currently a seasoned hunter, having tamed some of the most exoctic pets that she has ever come across. Humar the Pridelord and the Ghost Saber beckoned to her the most, so she let loose her previous Duststalker and Shadowclaw in favor of these two.

However, as time wore on, she felt that something wasn’t clicking with the Ghost Saber. It was weaker than Humar (whom she had dubbed Blackpaw after some thought) and seemed to yearn for the freedom it had once had. So, not wishing to see that home-sick look in its eyes everytime she glanced at it, she kept it stabled, putting all her effort into her Horde-eating black lion, who had grown on her. She knew that the Ghost Saber would soon leave her, as she had been watching the young panthers that prowled around the northern edge of Stranglethorn Vale.

Yet, when the time came, she tamed not a panther but a young tiger, a feisty beast that had attacked her right as her Ghost Saber had been set free. Without a doubt, she knew this cat would grow and become her loyal partner. She set a trap, and the the young hunter began taming the feline. When the taming process was complete, she looked up to see another cat coming after her, the same panther that she had been about to tame! The young tiger jumped in front of her and had the other cat slain before she could even reach for her gun.

As you can see, the connection was instant, and I know the cat will be with her ’till she dies (err, for real, I mean). Thus, I don’t think it’s fair for him to be left as merely Cat. I was hoping for a name that means something. However, I’ll be happy with any name suggestions.

And here is a great picture of Katta and her tiger resting in Shadowglen. Let the suggestions begin!

Can’t think of any Elvish names off hand, but I can think of one or two that would fit as a nice Tiger name.
(note — I like tribal names like Blackpaw and Heavyfoot)\
    1. Stripetail
    2. Thenodar (don’t ask me where I got that…)
    3. Devotion or other emotion/loyalty related things. (I have a cat named Sorrow)

Ok so they arent all that great. But neither is my spelling.

There’s always the classic tiger - Shere Khan - from The Jungle Book. Or given the nature of your first meeting - Sentry.

LMFAO @ Ronorin - I thought the same thing.

I recommend the name Champawat. The Champawat Tigress was a female Bengal Tiger shot in 1907 by Jim Corbett. She was allegedly responsible for 436 documented deaths in Nepal and the Kumaon area of India mostly during the 19th century. (Source: Wikipedia)

    CamoCat

Since Tiger stripes are used for camouflage in the wild(yes I take my encyclopedia wherever I go even in WoW lol)

  7. Sandfur - February 21st, 2008 @ 11:22 am EST

Maybe Tigerclaw for a name or Sunstripe?

  8. Casdia - February 21st, 2008 @ 12:07 pm EST

    Azrael, the angel of death
    Gazardiel, angel of new beginings
    Mihr, angel of friendship

Second only to the Lynx, the Tiger is my farovite cat… here are some of the names I considered when I tamed one.

    Namir-Raj (m) “King/ruler”

    Namir-Ra (f) “Queen/ruler”

    Ningal (f) “Great Lady”

    Rajan (m) “King/ protector”

I like to group pet families with certain mythologies …say Bears with Norse mythology, Wolves with Celtic/Norse mythology, certain Cats with India/Middle Eastern mythology…gives a good starting point.

Eldridge - is the given name of golfer Tiger Woods …
Hobbes - The popular cartoon stuffed tiger created by Bill Watterson was named after him.
Tipu - The boy’s name Tipu \t(i)-pu\ is of Hindi origin, and its meaning is “tiger”.

    Sundarbans -
The Bengal tigers of the Sundarbans (translation: ‘beautiful forest’), bordering India and Bangladesh, used to regularly kill fifty or sixty people a year. This was strange given that the tigers were usually in prime condition and had adequate prey available. Approximately 600 tigers live in this region, possible the largest single population anywhere in the world.

    Tara -
Officials soon started to believe that the likely culprit was a tigress called Tara. Conservationist Billy Arjan Singh had taken the British born cat from Twycross Zoo and raised her in India, with the goal of releasing her back into the wild. His experiments were also carried out on leopards with a respectable element of success.

Experts always felt that Tara would not have the required skills and correct hunting techniques to survive in the wild and controversy surrounded the project. She also associated men with providing food and comfort which increased the likelihood that she would approach villages.

    Echo

Wow, some nice names with a story attached above. Given Katta’s story though I would suggest Pounce - or Pownce if you use that particular social network ;)

  14. Taylor 'Weshezzi' - February 21st, 2008 @ 6:48 pm EST

    Very nice story! Maybe…

    Devilclaw
    Stripetail
    Piercingclaw
    Bloodmaw
    Dunestalker
    Mightyvoice
    Sunskin

  15. Kanaan - February 21st, 2008 @ 7:18 pm EST

Hmm.. Lightining! Seeing as he killed the panther before she could react, that seems like an apt name to me! ^_^

Was looking in my Latin Reverse Dictionary (Pet namers best friend!) and liked the idea of Protector, something like what Emowin said. Well, Protector of the People (you are a “people” right?) turns out to be Tribune. Tell me if I am wrong, though!!!

Tribune sounds like a good tiger name to me though…
    Tribune the Tiger…

Just looked in another dictionary btw. Tribune = Any official person chosen by the people to protect there interests. (I suppose staying alive is an interest..)
    Thank you oxford english dictionary…

My cat is Sian-Rotam, and I named him “Mittens”.. I like to have horribly ferocious pets with fluffy cute names :)

  18. Frankly - February 22nd, 2008 @ 1:33 am EST

After reading your story I could only think of the name “Harlequin”

    for an explanation why …
Harlequin is a character from Italian Comedy who was typicaly mischievous, and even though a servant role, he knew how to capture his audience.
But also, Harlequin means an English Longbowman.

Both of you are linked together in that one name.

  19. Derek Hodge - February 22nd, 2008 @ 8:37 am EST

    Spot.

  20. Emowin - February 22nd, 2008 @ 10:51 am EST

Ooooo I just thought of another one. I redently tamed Sian-Rotam and crisened him Ambush. Seams to go with your storie to :)

  21. Bobo&SgtPork - February 22nd, 2008 @ 12:17 pm EST

My dranei hunter Soloryn tamed a Durotar tiger and I named her “Reeve,” after a friend of mine who loves tigers. It also sounds like a mashup of Rend and Cleave. I would be honoured if you chose to name your beautiful cat “Reeve” (or “Reave,” to play more off the mashup).

  22. Kurasu - February 22nd, 2008 @ 12:25 pm EST

I suggest against Hobbes for only one reason: very, *VERY* popular tiger name. I think I’ve seen about five ‘Hobbes’ running around in SW *alone*.

Aside from that, I think the above suggestions are better than mine. I just wanted to keep there from being, for the love of Elune, *another* Hobbes out in WOW-world. ;)

  23. Ansawa - February 22nd, 2008 @ 5:48 pm EST

I love that you have full-screen glow on in the screenshot, Katta. It makes your new companion very bright.

On that note, my recommendations would be Brightpaw, Radiance, Aureus, or Savitar–after a Vedic sun deity whose chief concerns were sunset and sunrise. Savitar means “rouser, impeller, vivifier”. Another suggestion from the same mythology would be Indra, also a weather deity, as the god of war and one of the more active personages in Hindu mythology.

  24. Sarai - February 23rd, 2008 @ 4:15 am EST

After reading all the Mercedes Lackey books, I made a blood elf hunter, first pet tamed was a red lynx. I named him Ashkeyana, which is Kaled’a'in for ‘beloved’ or Ashke for short.

  25. Sarai - February 23rd, 2008 @ 4:17 am EST

And I agree with Kurasu, don’t name him Hobbes or anything like that :P

  26. Cybele - February 23rd, 2008 @ 2:36 pm EST

    Hmmm…how about

    Tora (tiger in japanese)
Tigris (The word “tiger” is taken from the Greek word “tigris”, which is possibly derived from a Persian source meaning “arrow”. From wikipedia.)
    Arrow

  27. Yossir - February 23rd, 2008 @ 11:37 pm EST

    Lancerate
    Rend
    Bane
    Drifter
Dai Dai (part of the Japanese word for orange)
    Ranger
    Sol
    Helios (Greek sun god)
    Horus (Egyptian sun god)
    Sirus
    Samus (Metroid bounty hunter)

  28. Lorith - February 24th, 2008 @ 11:40 am EST

Those are some great ideas up above :-) You going to update the post when you make your decision? Anyway, thought I’d contribute a few possible elvish ideas.

    Serrar or Zaram: Blade

    Mush’a: hunter

Dieb: family (woulda suggested sister, but sounds like your tiger’s a male.)

Good luck and looking forward to your decison!

  29. Me - February 24th, 2008 @ 11:46 am EST

hmmmm this is the only one I can think of

    Belore (Blood elf for Sun)

The reason I say that is that the sun is very powerful, and his/her fur is bright orange :)
    my suggestion

  30. Me - February 24th, 2008 @ 11:49 am EST

and for the love of god DONT name it Hobbes! (or mittens no offense Vaiolust)

  31. Nasya - February 24th, 2008 @ 1:32 pm EST

I tend to go for things one off of others. Like after getting my ghost cat and leveling her to 41 I named her Ishtar, Babylonian god of fertility, love, and war. Known for her seductive nature and cruelty upon leaving a lover. All in all the name was destined for a cat I think.

Simple process to find a name like this is Wikipedia. Search names of gods, demons and heros. Just a tip, try to avoid Roman and Greek gods unless it is a very obscure one.

  32. Katta - February 24th, 2008 @ 6:13 pm EST

I love all the names, and I’m planning on posting which one I pick.
I’m about to head off to World of Warcraft to try out some of the names.
(Can you say: Bank Hunter with tiger that hasn’t been named?)
But, my decision should be along shortly.
And no worries, I’m rather sick of Hobbles myself.

  33. ron - February 25th, 2008 @ 10:37 am EST

well I’m not too awful good with meanings but you want something with some kick something that will make others stand and look at you and your pet with awe and maybe a little fear. I have 2 pet cats both from winter spring I tamed both when they were level 59 and i was level 70 took me a long time to get them to 70 the white 1 i named Mutilator and the White stripped blue with blue paws I named PainKiller. I also have a scorpid named ReaverODeath but going to let him go and get another pet you might want to name it InstantDeath for the speed and quickness at which he/she killed the on coming tiger as always just suggestions

  34. Ves - February 26th, 2008 @ 12:52 pm EST

At lvl 10 I tamed a Darnassian tigress, and here at lvl 70 she still fights by my side. I wanted to give her a name that would remind me each time of what her duties were. I looked to the names of the gods and goddesses for inspiration and finally settled on one from the egyptian pantheon…Sekhemet. The cat goddess of destruction who slew so many she was able to bathe in their blood. A bit gory perhaps, but my cat has become well known on my server. I could not fathom playing my hunter without this beautiful and deadly cat by my side.

  35. Karii - February 27th, 2008 @ 10:28 am EST

Maybe Shadowstripe? Or for something a bit kooky, Tangerine?! (Tanga for short :P )

  36. Rwar - February 27th, 2008 @ 7:09 pm EST

Hmm…. I think you should choose “Bellator”, which means a fighing man or a warrior in Latin. I think it suits your pet very well since he started to fight immediately after you tamed him, and before you even started to tame him. ;D

  37. Lonewolf - February 28th, 2008 @ 2:35 am EST

    Eloiden - Elfish

    Liraƫl - Elfish

    :P

  38. Boomkin - February 28th, 2008 @ 3:12 am EST

call it Shenanigans, I always wanted a pet called that =P and a tiger is just too cute not to call that xD
