Clever Pet Naming

A hunter named Boarwood from Gorefiend let me know about the method he used to name his pet ravager, and I wanted to share it with everyone because I think it’s very clever.

In short, he changed his language (which you can do via the little quote bubble icon on your chat window) to his racial language (Troll, in his case), found someone of another race to help out, and then said (typed) the word “Ravager”. His helper, not knowing Troll, saw “Craaweh” — which is presumably the Troll word for ravager. And so Boarwood named his ravager Craaweh!

You needn’t confine yourself to the family name, of course, nor to your own race so long as you can find a friend to help out. The Darnassian word for “Little” might be the perfect name for your orc’s stolen owlet, for example.

been wondering this for a while – is there a slash command to do the same – toggle common speech to native tongue? My mods seem to have elminated the ‘quote bubble icon’. don’t recall ever seeing it really.

I used this method once. In fact, I also used the Lore mod (a language mod that lets you speak Thelassian, Demonic, Draconic, etc) and have named a few pets out of those languages.

But sometimes common words are nice too. My favorite roleplay for hunters is a very special storyline involving a Ghostsaber named Spectre. :3

This is a terrific idea. Thanks for sharing, Mania and Boarwood! :)

This is a very neat trick — I used it once to name a cat “Feline.” In Darnassian, it came out “Ishura.” I thought “Ishura” was a lot prettier than blah-blah “Feline” anyway. =D

This is quite a cool way to think of names! I often simply choose a simple, one or two-syllable word which in some way has something to do with the pet family (Soar or Rath for a windserpent, for example, or Ripper/Scythe for cats).

On a side note, I’ve newly started a Warcraft blog as a repository for tips, tricks, guides, hints, and maybe some RP as well, entitled Welki’s Roll. If anyone has some helpful feedback to get me started on the Roll, you can visit it at http://welkisroll.blogspot.com/, or simply click on my name at the top of this comment.

Currently, I have absolutely nothing on the blog but a list of alts and an explanation of what I want the blog to be. If anyone wants to start contributing to it, please let me know how I can start making the blog a helpful resource!

And Mania, I apologize for advertising the Roll on your site, hope you don’t mind, heh :)

Ha i remember back in the day going thru wetlands i finally tamed those beautiful orange raptors in the north.

Named him (sadly her actually) Grant as in Dr. Grant from Jurassic Park.
I say her cuz, i can’t be the only one to figure it out, but the cursed crew in wetlands give that debuff that turns whatever afflicted into an undead. Well I’m a male character and i always turned male and every pet I’ve done it with turned into female Undead except the creatures we know to be males, i.e. Bangalash from STV and Sian “Rotam”? Patriarch of the wintersabers, or in other words one of the two white lions in the game.

My ravager, Andu (“rage” in Thalassian) was named the same way. I also have a Ghoststalker that’s named like that as well, but I forgot what “memory” is in Thalassian..

  8. Murphius - February 12th, 2008 @ 6:30 am UTC

I took my Nelf hunter at lvl 10 all the way to the blood elf starting place to get a crazed dragonhawk and after seeing him use his fire breath i named him the first thing that popped into my head “BIC” just like the lighter

  9. warhound - February 12th, 2008 @ 10:14 am UTC

Too bad I didn’t know this trick I just named my ghost saber steak.

  10. Rikaku - February 12th, 2008 @ 11:30 am UTC

I name my pets after favorite characters they seem to resemble. Like Heero for my Netherstorm Lynx since he has such a spiky fur mane, and Heero (the character he’s named after) has spiky brown hair.
I noticed the same thing Mike, that my raptor Domon changed female on being cursed, but I noticed that all the pets I had did, including Even the barrens lions were female, so I think it may just be a default setting for any mob that isn’t required to be male in a quest.

  11. Corvidea - February 12th, 2008 @ 12:52 pm UTC

I like this idea, although I know that doing translations like that can get you a lot of repetition of words. I tend to use “themes” for pet names. Since Corvidea is latin (the name of the crow family) most of my pet names are latin (thank you on-line translators!) I don’t know how accurate they are, but I come up with some really neat names. Phantos, (Ghost) for Bangalash for example. My latest is a Ironbeak Hunter that’s working out great and is named Cordatus (either Wisdom or Insight, I forget which!) They have all kinds of translators online, and I’ve also gotten some good char names that way.

  12. Concrete - February 12th, 2008 @ 1:29 pm UTC

cool idea, i named Echeyakee, “Kimba”. Its one of the 1st Japanese Manga characters, Kimba the white lion.

Need to name a Windserpent soon once it hits 70.

Actually, there are only a small handful of set translated words for each language in WoW.

Each of the languages have a list of pre-determined words ranging from 1 letter all the way to 9 letters that are used to replace the words in a sentence to give it a presumed translation when in fact it’s neither literal nor logical.

“I am a monkey’s uncle” could just as easily translate to “A fi e chakari siame” in troll as it would “S ju o tanponi difus”.

The specific words the WoW translation filter uses for Troll are as follows.

    One-letter words: A, E, H, J, M, N, O, S, U
Two-letter words: Di, Fi, Fu, Im, Ir, Is, Ju, So, Wi, Yu
Three-letter words: Deh, Dim, Fus, Han, Mek, Noh, Sca, Tor, Weh, Wha,
Four-letter words: Cyaa, Duti, Iman, Iyaz, Riva, Skam Ting, Worl, Yudo
Five-letter words: Ackee, Atuad, Caang, Difus, Nehjo Siame, T’ief, Wassa
Six-letter words: Bwoyar, Deh’yo, Fidong, Honnah, Icense, Italaf, Quashi, Saakes, Smadda, Stoosh, Wi’mek, Yuutee
Seven-letter words: Chakari, Craaweh, Flimeff, Godehsi, Lok’dim, Reespek, Rivasuf, Tanponi, Uptfeel, Yahsoda, Ziondeh
Eight-letter words: Ginnalka, Machette, Nyamanpo, Oondasta, Wehnehjo, Whutless, Yeyewata, Zutopong
    Nine-letter words: Fus’obeah, Or’manley

  15. Deathbang - February 12th, 2008 @ 6:59 pm UTC

Wow never thought of that might use this for my alts! Anyways i usually try to come up with a pun like Soul, my Ghost Saber!(Mania I owe this pet to you! And it is my most favorite pet ever! I don’t think anything else would suit my Tauren Hunter!)

  16. Dunadri - February 12th, 2008 @ 10:17 pm UTC

This doesn’t work for some of the animals, but for my snow leopard, I actually used the scientific name “Panthera uncia” But since that’s too long…I just used “Uncia”

Wouldn’t really work for Ravagers or Dragonhawks…Plainstriders maybe use the name for emu, or ostrich or something??

  17. Boarwood - February 12th, 2008 @ 11:35 pm UTC

Dunadri i actually used “Surnia” for an owl once, same thing, surnia is a part of some sort of owl’s scientific name. For my owls i use the name “Kotori” now, which is navajo or something for “owl spirit”. that’s another good way to name some pets, and characters like tauren and trolls that have a certain jungley or native american feel to them, look up a word in a similar language to them that means something like “strong” or “soul” or whatever you wish… i had a tauren warrior named “Honovi”, meaning “strong” in something in some native american language… use that as well if you like.

  18. Kristy - February 13th, 2008 @ 12:06 am UTC

    Nice. Very clever! lol

  19. Mikeoneal - February 13th, 2008 @ 3:29 am UTC

Yea i figured female is default for all creatures, just felt it odd that because some creatures that are commonly known as male do indeed turn male, so obviously some amount of work went into such an occurence whether it was on purpose or not idk.

Occassionally when I’m creatively blocked on names i steal NPC names, like my old ravager before i released her i named her Noraani after the engineering trainer in Zangarmarsh…… or was it the alchemy vendor vendor??
Then while training my STV scorpion to see how her dps does in raid setups, decided to take her to our first few attempts on Lurker Below. That day i had just looted the captured firefly NPC pet and that refers to the SciFi series of the same name and movie Serenity, so i guess my mind was on the subject when my friend tell me her BF who was also a good friend was a huge fan so Serenity just stuck. Also helps they’re both bugs so i usually find myself with both pets summoned lol

Or name your pet in memory of a past one. First pet ever was Westfall Coyote which i later named Dakota, well one thing led to another and eventually i released her since i couldnt seem to lvl her after leaving her in the stables for a couple days. Guess i felt bad about treating my first hunter pet so harshly, so it was a no brainer when i tamed one of the black BE wolves.

  20. Trysten - February 13th, 2008 @ 4:32 am UTC

I’m actually one of those guys that is lucky that they haven’t been reported for their pet names. I’ve had a few pets in the game, but I can only remember 2 of the names I’ve used. I had one of the Ghost Cats named Dawn Keebals and I now have one of the black tigers from Skettis named Drew Peakok. (And no, Trysten is not the name of my character.) ;)

  21. Suzi - February 13th, 2008 @ 5:05 am UTC

That’s a fantastic way of naming pets (or characters, for that matter)!

I’m not as inventive so most of the names I come up with just remind me of the pet I have in some way.

My latest pet bucks this trend a little because it actually means something. I tamed myself a Skettis owl and decided to name her Athena after the Greek goddess of Wisdom (amongst other things), whose companion was always a owl – which in turn is known for being a very wise creature.

  22. Meldor - February 13th, 2008 @ 9:07 am UTC

  23. Shando - February 13th, 2008 @ 3:53 pm UTC

Had a mess around with the languages today with a friend and got sort creaped out. It turns out that my real name, my hunters name, and the actual word hunter, when translated into Darnassian…all come out as Shando!
    Spooky huh?
ive actually taken a liking to that name now so it is now my offical title
(unforutanaly through some more playing around we found that hitler also translated into the same..oh well) ;)

  24. Deathbang - February 13th, 2008 @ 8:01 pm UTC

My Undead bear is name Takanka the Tauren word for Undeath.

  25. Rasen - February 13th, 2008 @ 10:57 pm UTC

On a similar tack, WowWiki has pages on pretty much every Warcraft language, with some official translations. It was how my newest owl, Kazkah (would be Kaz’kah if I could do the ‘) got her name. It translates from the Troll language as “Death Totem”

  26. hyena84 - February 14th, 2008 @ 1:47 am UTC

thats what i tend to use when i cant think of anything.works for bank alts to.though sometimes your better off useing something else since some of the translations might get you banned…

  27. oi - February 14th, 2008 @ 12:11 pm UTC

I have the rarespawn saber from teldrasil, nightstalker i think his name is. I named him seunghuicho because he’s so bad ass.

  28. Siden - February 14th, 2008 @ 4:31 pm UTC

I actually use Lakota words for my pet names.
My wolf is Mieyobo which means I am
My warpstalker is Wanichi which means No good
It appears that Blizz used a few too.

Washte (as in Washte Pawne) is the Lakota word for Good

  29. Ringo Flinthammer - February 14th, 2008 @ 7:43 pm UTC

This really is a clever system.

It makes sense that there would be multiple random letters that it would use, though, to prevent cross-faction communication.

And to answer an earlier question, inexplicably, there isn’t a slash command to switch languages, like there was in EQ, but a guildmate of mine made a mod to do just this, in response to my request.

It’s called LangCommand and can be found at Widge’s Workshop: http://www.planeofhate.com/wow/workshop/

It even lets you change languages within a macro.

  30. Laura - February 15th, 2008 @ 1:51 pm UTC

My Troll Hunter named his black wolf Mojo and his White owl Juju.

  31. shibumi - February 15th, 2008 @ 6:48 pm UTC

    Ringo

much thanks for the link. I never found a slash command, figured I just didn’t look hard enough. :)

  32. shibumi - February 15th, 2008 @ 6:54 pm UTC

I tend to name my pets either with navajo names or just whatever strikes my fancy.
shimosi is navajo for my cat. like Rasen above, it’s frustrating not to be able to use the ‘ in a name, which in navajo is a glotteral stop.

ts’ah is needle for example. I have a character named tsah and someone asked me if it was a reference to ‘there’s something about halo’ – ::sigh::

shibumi (which is *not* navajo) :)

  33. Rasen - February 15th, 2008 @ 9:45 pm UTC

The fact you can’t do ‘ in a pet name is mildly annoying actually. Randomly generated Voidwalker names have em sometimes.

  34. David - February 18th, 2008 @ 6:16 pm UTC

My hunter has a pet serpent he tamed in Wailing Caverns which he named “Trouser”.

  35. shibumi - February 19th, 2008 @ 2:32 pm UTC

I named my first ’sewer beast’ tame ‘grip’. several layers of joke-ness there. First, his bite. second, old reference to a suitcase (in the days when they were made of alligator), and lastly and the biggest stretch – film industry grip. won’t get into that one here …

or caltrop for my first ravager – no matter how you tossed him, he always had a point up. sorta.

    ok, I’ll stop now

  36. tongpu - February 21st, 2008 @ 1:49 am UTC

I found out about this trick long time ago (almost 2 years ago) but the trick itself can be tricky for the user him/herself. WoW ‘native’ languages aren’t that complicated… I do not know myself how much Troll language is complicated but I bet that Blizzard added around 4-5 words for 7 letters words like ‘Ravager’… That means that if You write in Troll language:

    Ravager
    America
    Letters
    Preview
    LOLROFL

You will see the word “Craaweh” at least 2 times…
That’s why I think this trick is crappy… Because You may find a Troll one day who will ask You why did You call Your pet ‘LOLROFL’
    Have a nice day everyone

    ‘Survival’ above ‘Beast Mastery’ :D

  37. tongpu - February 21st, 2008 @ 1:52 am UTC

I got a Broken Tooth cat back before all the patches that nurfed him. I named hin Brojta Tonn which is Old norse for (one Guess) Broken Tooth. I goes along with my character name(s) and the guild I happened to be in…

    Thor
