PTR 2.4.0: Random Notes from the Isle of Quel’Danas

PTR 2.4.0: New Interfacte Option - Show Free Bag SpaceThis morning I finally managed to get onto the Public Test Realms. I immediatedly headed for the new zone, the Isle of Quel’Danas. For the Horde, at least, there is a flightpath from Silvermoon City. (Whether that has only been given to us on the PTR or whether that will be available from immediately on the live realms I do not know.)

This new island looks a lot like Eversong Woods — or more properly, like the ruined part of Silvermoon City. It’s quite pretty — and crawling with undead and magic-addicted blood elves (aka crack elves). There is also a large naga area to the east, complete with enslaved murlocs. Unfortunately, I only saw one type of beast — a Shattered Sun Dragonhawk, right when you land — and they, as Beast Lore says, Cannot Be Tamed.

I rode my little Brewfest mount all around the new zone but haven’t yet gone into either of the instances. There seems to be a decent amount of solo content, including a couple of daily quests, but the instances are presumably the focus.

Since I am unlikely to make it into either instance, I’d really appreciate any information on beasts in the instances that you happen to run across. Thanks!

In other news:

  • While riding about, I saw Nightmare Vine and Mana Thistle. (I’m an herbalist.)
  • You can now complete 25 daily quests per day.
  • The Interface Options panel has been redesigned to look like a more normal options panel (pic below), and there is a handy new option to show how much free bag space you have on your backpack icon (pic above).

I must be soo behind everything. Slow down.
    1. A new area is coming out? Huh?
    2. What color where the dragonhawks? Gold, or that weird tarnished gold of the Feral Dragonhawk Hatchlings?(there is still a chance of Blizz making them tameble!)
    3. Whhyy don’t I ever know these things…? *hehe*

  2. Kurdor - February 10th, 2008 @ 4:31 pm UTC

Well just because they aren’t tameable now doesn’t mean they never will be. Look at the Nethermine Ravagers. :p

Also, Alliance get to fly from Ironforge. Fun fun.

And speaking of stuff new to this patch, have you seen this yet, Mania?

Apparently it doesn’t use a quiver or ammo, it just manifests its own arrows. O_o

  3. Wolfington - February 10th, 2008 @ 7:28 pm UTC

From what I know, that bow is not useble outside of this one dungeon.(Thats all I know about where it is used, just its “this one dungeon.” hehe…)
NOTE: look at the DPS and buffs. Blizz would get sued soo bad if level 70′s got to use a bow with 148.7 dps, good speed, Agi bonus, and a bagillion different buffs.
*long sad sigh* it would be sooo cool though.

  4. someguy - February 10th, 2008 @ 8:49 pm UTC

it will be usable outside of the instance unlike the legendary weapons of the kael’thas fight. however the bow uses no ammo and therefore the ammo dps is included in the bow dps. so you could subtract the 53 dps of timeless shell to get an idea of the true dps (steady shot will hit harder since its damage is (base weapon damage plus [RAP * 0.2 + 150]) though)

  5. Draketh - February 10th, 2008 @ 8:54 pm UTC

Sorry to burst your theroycrafting bubble Wolfington, but that bow is the real deal. The bow you are probably thinking of is the one which Hunters can get during Kael’thas event in TK: The Eye.

However, the bow which Kurdor linked is quite real, and quite Legendary, as it’s shiny orange name suggests. It is dropped off the last boss (presumably) in the Sunwell Plateau 25-man instance. If you take a look at it’s effects, the bow has two nifty features:

    1. It replaces the quiver’s speed bonus with an equivalent bonus. (15%)
    2. It conjures arrows. which means…

NO MORE QUIVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of course, the lucky hunter in question must actually GET the bow, and the SWP raid is tier 6, and harder than either BT or Hyjal.

The Kael’thas event bow is limited to the instance, and despawns once you leave it. However, it is quite legendary as well. This is it: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=30318

Also, just as a side question: How would Bliz get *sued* for an in-game item?

  6. Wolfington - February 10th, 2008 @ 9:19 pm UTC

Dang, man, that must be one tough place. Sorry if I threw someone off there, I am to lazy to realy look that up. (Woops on my part >.<)
I still think it is weird that a 70 would get a bow that powerfull, but I guess it is just some extra special weapon.

Draketh — I did not mean actualy “sued” I guess I just used it as a phrase. My bad again.
    Sorry again.

  7. Draketh - February 10th, 2008 @ 9:23 pm UTC

Oh yeah, SWP is going to be rediculous. . But that’s why I don’t raid.

Yeah, the person above my original post pointed out something I missed- the bow isn’t really as powerful as it seems, because the fact that you don’t have ammo means you don’t get the flat DPS increases that come from it. So really, the two bows (the TK one and the SWP one) are about equal in DPS, but the non-white-damage parts of your shot rotation should be hitting harder.

And you don’t have to apologize Wolfy, I was just a little confused by the statement. Stupid me

    :)

i just hope that new bow means that eventually theyll phase out ammo altogether and,if needed just give us items that can be put in the ammo slot (like a trinket or a peice of armor/weaponry) that add to dps or have other neat effects.that way we could FINALLY get another bag space and start saveing all our ammo funds for other stuff.like petfood for example…i wonder when theyre gonna add an auto decline for guild/group/duel invites to?i get spammed with those alot more then trade requests…

  9. Rasta - February 10th, 2008 @ 10:36 pm UTC

I’m pretty sure that Thori’dal is not going to be setting a precedent for future bows and guns to come. Part of what makes this and the Kael’thas bow legendary is their lack of an ammunition requirement. The fact is, ammunition and the limited bag space is one of the ways Blizzard designed hunters’ “upkeep cost”. Because we save money (usually) from wiping (durability hits, loss of potions/buff foods), we make up that money in buying ammunition and losing bag space which could potentially be used to hold more items, and thus make more money. Every other class has upkeep costs designed into them too.

I think the general idea of this bow is sort of a “congratulations, if you’ve made it far enough to get this, you have earned the right to not have to keep buying ammunition.” Not to mention, the stats on this bow contribute a whole lot more to a hunter’s DPS than the BBotB.

You may be interested in knowing that the Grimtotem Spirit Wolf seems to be very bugged on the 2.4 PTR. I don’t know how to explain it other than that the rendering is broken, the ghostly blue is breaking out of the model frame. Contact me if you want a picture for petopia, I could take some screenshots. Hopefully this does not prompt them to take it from us.

  11. Ziarre - February 11th, 2008 @ 4:43 am UTC

I don’t know about Mania, but as an owner of a Spirit Guide I’d sure like to see the screenshots… *worries*

  12. Wolfington - February 11th, 2008 @ 6:21 am UTC

Oh dear. That is not good for those ghost wolf owners. Now all of the lucky people who got them will have a broken-glass wolf? El henios! (uhh, yeah, that just sounded good there)

My two Ideas about the bow are contradictory. I must make up my mind.
    1. For all you hunters out there that do Hyjal and BT for fun, you may have a chance at a sweet bow. Good job!
    2. UNfortunately, not all hunters have the luxury of getting great gear at huge dungeons. I, for example, live off of the gear I get from Auction House and from low-difficulty dungeons like Steam Vaults. I have a 0% chance of getting this bow.
If one of us runs in to AV and starts fighting, they may run into one of the other faction with that bow.
    Ok, lost that AV, next…

Grattz for all of you epic gearers though ^.^

  13. Rasen - February 11th, 2008 @ 8:21 am UTC

If this thing with the ghost wolf persists to the real realms, it could be Blizz’s way of making those us who have one get rid of it of our own accord, thereby it’s “not their fault” and saves them the trouble of making it unfeedable or changing the skin.

If they do this I’ll be really annoyed, mine dinged 69 yesterday.

  14. Volcan - February 11th, 2008 @ 8:59 am UTC

I already saw the bow and if its true it conjures arrows its really epic. Now i finally will have space to put my pumpkin bag to ^^ If i get it of course lol, which will be hard…

  15. Rikaku - February 11th, 2008 @ 11:14 am UTC

Broken Glass wolf? Oh no…I may have to log into the PTR with a copy just to see this. I can’t have my little Kiba ruined T-T

  16. Ryno - February 11th, 2008 @ 12:32 pm UTC

My ghost wolf just dinged 70 this morning… Blizz better have a d*** fine reason for making the wolf broken if it stays that way. The most obvious answer is that they’re making a shaman ability to summon wolves that look the same, as I doubt they really changed it because it didn’t fit the hunter class. Any ideas?

  17. Mania - February 11th, 2008 @ 1:20 pm UTC

I wouldn’t panic yet — I am hearing a lot about assorted graphics issues with the PTR.

  18. Ziarre - February 11th, 2008 @ 4:13 pm UTC

True…the last PTR I copied a character and noticed graphics issues then. Perhaps it’s a PTR thing. *nods* I very much hope so. I haven’t been this content with the pet I have since my Griever (Rak’Shiri).

  19. Concrete - February 11th, 2008 @ 4:50 pm UTC

the ghost wolf graphic is just a test realm thing. Last time i was in 2.3 no one had left shoes for some reason! Everyone was running about SW like an annual pirate party and they all forgot their wooden legs.
Ghost Wolf is here to stay for the lucky ones, just think of it as like the onxy raptor whistle

  20. Deathbang - February 11th, 2008 @ 5:39 pm UTC

Remind me where it says it uses no ammo! It just says “Does not stack with quiver effects” The whole ammo thing is a rumor started by misinterpretation of that line!

    Requires No Ammo
    Instant
Thori’dal generates magical arrows when the bow string is drawn. Does not use ammo.

  22. Draketh - February 11th, 2008 @ 8:35 pm UTC

I’m pretty sure that Bulldazhor just flattened you, Deathbang. wtfpwnd.

lol…..it’s a hidden effect listed among the item codes, but if you have any doubts mmo-champion has a thing on it somewhere among their piles of goodies.

    It’s quite legendary.

  23. Deathbang - February 11th, 2008 @ 9:43 pm UTC

Yup I just got pwned but you can’t yell at me for not knowing about hidden codes lol oh and btw http://www.warcraftpets.com/wow.pets/mythical/miscellaneous/phoenix_hatchling.asp
Then phoenix is indeed a small pet. I was kinda hoping for a dragonhawk skin but oh well.

  24. Murphius - February 12th, 2008 @ 6:40 am UTC

    after looking at the linkhttp://www.worldofraids.com/2008/ptr/24/sunwell/items/thoridal.jpg
i noticed that it says nothing about not needing arrows just that you get a speed bonus so you must not need a quiver

  25. Mania - February 12th, 2008 @ 7:05 pm UTC

I just realized that I never answered Wolfington’s first question.

The dragonhawks I saw were the red/pink dragonhawks, like Bloodfalcons. There were just the two, guarding the flight master, and they were on the Shattered Sun Offensive faction — which is why I doubt they will be made tameable.

I didnt notice any problems with how my ghost wolf looked but it seemed like mobs werent leashed (I would continue to run mounted for a while and mobs still continued to follow me) and it seemed like I was always in combat. I would even get to the docks and FD, leave combat, then stand up and I was in combat again. Part of the ocean was missing when I flew over it and when i got on the griff it took about 30 seconds of hovering/flying before it actually took off and flew.

  28. Volcan - February 13th, 2008 @ 12:35 pm UTC

Autumn, that rather sounds like you were lagging than graphic problems… ya know, delayed ports and fly-offs etc are just because of lag usually…

  29. Wolfington - February 14th, 2008 @ 2:01 pm UTC

Thanks for the answer! I actualy forgot I asked that question ^.^

  30. kilgoron - May 20th, 2008 @ 9:51 am UTC

i really wouldnt mind getting that bow, since i raid alot I waste alot of money on arrows. imma start raiding SWP just for it. though i could use some legendary gear for my pally. blizz needs to make some
