WotLK Bestiary: Shovel Tusk

Wrath of the Lich King: Shovel Tusk

Several people wrote in this week to let me know that Blizzard’s Wrath of the Lich King Bestiary page has been updated with it’s first actual beast — the Shovel Tusk, a huge moose-like creature with truly absurd antlers. Unfortunately, I don’t hold out much hope of this being a hunter pet: Blizzard has never let us tame ungulates. But still, it’s good to see some progress on the Bestiary.

Way to use the word Ungulate and make me browse Wikipedia ending at “The Evolution of Cetaceans” Jerk. >.<

And yeah, actually, when I saw that I thought to myself, “No way are hunters getting these.”

  2. Mania - February 9th, 2008 @ 2:16 am UTC

Heh! I had the word in mind because I saw a WoW CM — Drysc maybe? — use it in a thread the other day. Unfortunately he used it in error; he was talking about jello and I am pretty sure he meant undulate. (I was going to ask him but you know how blue threads get.)

  3. Trollin' - February 9th, 2008 @ 3:01 am UTC

Ahh, makes sense. And yeah, that would be the wrong usage, you’re right.

  4. marzix - February 9th, 2008 @ 1:20 pm UTC

they look pretty sweet…. they will let us tame these when they let us tame kodos and clefthoofs

  5. Shelgeyr - February 9th, 2008 @ 1:38 pm UTC

Sorry, but I think they are silly looking, and wouldn’t want one. I think Dr. Seuss had one of these though….

  6. Schadenfreude - February 9th, 2008 @ 6:27 pm UTC

I’ve always wanted to ride around an elephant moose-lion, so here’s to hoping that they’ll be the Talbuks of northrend. 0:) Moo ha ha.

  7. Kurdor - February 9th, 2008 @ 9:57 pm UTC

On one hand, these don’t seem like the kind of thing they’d let hunters tame. On the other hand, I know they’re going to add new tameable types of creatures for Northrend, and this would be the lazy option.

    O.o

Are the artist’s at Blizz smoking crack?
They use owls as crows, and buzzards as ravens…… or is it the other way around. Then they come up with some really weird crap. The artistry is good, but geeez people, some of you would go nutz over a pile of dog crap with antlers if they put it in game. Wake up and demand better for your money.

    Boars are ungulates. :D

  10. Kristy - February 10th, 2008 @ 8:19 pm UTC

For the upcoming expansion, the Shovel Tusk is too big to be a Tameable Hunter pet.

And I’m looking forward to more valuable Bestiary entries (they did have 3 outta the 5 Tameables in their “Burning Crusade” Bestiary) into the “The Wrath of the Lich King”.

Well i for one want to see a few more interesting beasts showing up , that Shovel Tusk well i know that’s not going to be tameable , but as a general thing in the game i hope they fix some of the bugs this game is getting before they bring out the next instalment .

stuck mobs x thousands at all levels , mobs that group up and attack although they are not close together ? sure looks like a bug to me , the citys and that dam lag , 3fps i get at times in shattrath and logging only sometimes helps , mobs i kill and cannot loot ” messages like you are not close enough to loot ‘ ???? , so i end up logging out and in so i can loot , when i first started this game a long time ago it was rare to see stuck mobs , i used to laugh at the tree in darkshore that growled when i got close though , but i am sure it is much worse now and it is slowly spoiling the game , now it has got to the stage that i wait a second to try and see if a mob is moving correctly before shooting , as i found the other day a mob that i had to run half way across the zone with a low alt ( well it seemed like it ) to escape it as i could not kill it , even out of sight it was still hitting me and i had to log to clear it , luckily i did not die from it but that’s what usually happens to me ,

Well i would rather they fix the bugs they have already got , then give us hunters a few more pets , even a few that are already about being made tameable would do , or a few extra skins , but i would rather have just one extra pet slot , 1 for sorrow ( dps my cat or a ravager) 2 for where the hell did that come from ( my warp stalker ) 3 for grouping , bird/wolf . 4 for show tall strider ? ( your choice here ) thats at 70 of course when i have no new skills to learn , but with this new expansion i can see i will lose one of my pets anyway .

although i am interested in the new expansion i am not so sure i will rush to buy it as are many of my friends thinking exactly the same , they seem to be on a roll to create new content without fixing what they already have .

yes i know some will disagree with me but i know a few game programmers and i know unless they are properly controlled they will ignore faults and push ahead regardless to get to their goal.

  12. Dracobeast - February 11th, 2008 @ 7:12 am UTC

there is no way a hunter will be walking around with that boar-like thing but if theres somkething they should make a tameable pet is the mana serpents inm ghostlands and mana wyrms in eversong woods.

  13. Ryno - February 11th, 2008 @ 10:02 am UTC

Well, Blizz will probably make some type of snow cat tamable, like the ones in Winterspring but just different skinned (like the ones in Dar). That’d be the cheap way out, and a lot of people would be ok with that.

  14. shibumi - February 11th, 2008 @ 5:37 pm UTC

folling the link, I wondered about the Nerubian Vizier. Half insect half human. Excuse me, but, while giant swords the length of 3 of us with electric sparks and glowing balls is hard enough to take (a hat dip to anime I guess – too cartoony for me), half human, half insect.

What human, no, what insect would… no it’s just too much to visualize. I think I’ll just poke my eye out with some handy needles.

  15. Mikeoneal - February 11th, 2008 @ 9:59 pm UTC

    Kinda what Ryno said.

They have frostsabers as tameable pets, and look at NE mounts not to mention the wintersaber tamers mount.
So what gives? I feel so long as it is labeled a beast, is not a boss, and is not absurdly large or powerful, it should be tameable. Like what they eventually did with serpents.

I’m expecting Blizzard to eventually get the message we want more choices, and not one or two, Think of how many hunters have ravagers and warp stalkers, and before that how many frostsabers were there?

  16. Maevet - February 12th, 2008 @ 7:19 am UTC

I want to tame one just to name it TheHatRack

  17. Martijn - February 12th, 2008 @ 12:07 pm UTC

The Antlers! What a shame! It looks so unnatural! I know WOW is fantasy, but this just doesn’t make sense!

  18. Bobo & SgtPork - February 12th, 2008 @ 12:12 pm UTC

I want to say Thank You for the appropriate use of “ungulate.” What is the point of having an expanded vocabulary if you aren’t allowed to use it? As far as Drysc using “ungulate” re jello, I believe it is made from hooves, so the terminology does apply ;)

  19. Mania - February 12th, 2008 @ 7:07 pm UTC

Gazmik Fizzwidget: Ack! You have ruined my entire argument! I hope you’re happy. *pout*

Bobo & SgtPork: That is a very good point about the jello! Nice catch.

  20. Kristy - February 13th, 2008 @ 12:03 am UTC

Oh, I just thought of something! They may do what they did with the snakes in Zul’gurub, before “Burning Crusade” came out (make those hawks in Zul’aman Tameable, before their “Wrath of the Lich King” release, duh). :-) lol

  21. Nyx - February 14th, 2008 @ 12:02 am UTC

Martjin – google Megaloceros. Real thing!

  22. yaso - February 14th, 2008 @ 4:35 am UTC

    I’ve wanted a zebra since release ;(

  23. Lokthr - Laughing Skull - February 14th, 2008 @ 12:07 pm UTC

    Pfft Zevra… all pets suck except for Giraffe…. I want a freakin giraffe… >,<

  24. Ryno - February 15th, 2008 @ 7:56 am UTC

Yeah, but the giraffe would have to be really small so it wouldn’t bump into things… what I want is tamable silithids. Maybe a silithid hatchery room where we can tame them since they’re young or something… I’ll take any excuse, any… >_>

  25. Yossir - February 16th, 2008 @ 3:02 pm UTC

I’ll just be happy if we can tame something that can fly and/or has an ice-based attack unique to its family.

  26. Ryno - February 16th, 2008 @ 4:58 pm UTC

    *coughIceSilithidcough*

  27. huntlord - February 17th, 2008 @ 1:37 am UTC

i wana caster pet with buffs and spells like a lock pet

  28. Mikeoneal - February 17th, 2008 @ 4:26 am UTC

I wish the term “caster” actually meant ranged. Cuz if your going to cast, cast dont do whatever then run in and get 1 shot.

  29. Meowmington - February 18th, 2008 @ 12:01 pm UTC

I want one for those white bucks so I can call it Patronus. (lol)

  30. Mactuft - February 19th, 2008 @ 3:39 pm UTC

You know, they may not make them tameable, but I could see them as mounts.

  31. Hotaru - February 20th, 2008 @ 7:23 am UTC

We should be able to tame moths imo :P they could have an awesome pet race-specific spell that slows ppl with spores or something like that. :P

  32. shannon - February 20th, 2008 @ 4:47 pm UTC

we will all be taming kodos and Zevras before they will lets us tame that thing
    damn blizzard

  33. Otzlowe - February 20th, 2008 @ 11:01 pm UTC

    @ 14

“Humanoid” is entirely different from “Human.” What about Ahn’Qiraj, too? It’s not like these Humanoid versions of odd things are even slightly new to Warcraft. Nerubians themselves are humanoids, and they’ve been around (since I don’t know their first appearance) at least Warcraft II.

That said, I like the Shovel Tusk. It looks interesting, but its in-game model does it more justice than the concept art does. The Concept makes its one big horn look a bit wonky.

  34. Rotun - February 22nd, 2008 @ 10:07 am UTC

    pah. I want an ellekk:(

  35. Farseer Lolotea - March 4th, 2008 @ 3:50 pm UTC

We’re not going to be able to tame these. There’s no way they’d allow it.

But, as Mactuft already said, let’s hope they’re available as mounts. (Exalted with the Kalu’ak, perhaps?)

  36. Airodan - June 10th, 2008 @ 1:35 pm UTC

I dont think that these will be tamable (I wouldn’t want one if they were.) but I do think that a Northerend faction will use them as mounts, and you can get one when you become exalted.

  37. Jegard - July 6th, 2008 @ 12:16 am UTC

I’m really voteing on these to be tameable just because of how different they are! Point being we really desperately need more exotic and rare pets. Just and overall variety so that we aren’t all basically running around with the same pets!!!!

  38. Dal - October 7th, 2008 @ 9:57 pm UTC

The shovel tusk isnt to big to tame most of all the creatures you tame shrink so would the shovel tusk. But i do agree its ugly and i wouldnt want it as a pet. I hope they put something completely deferent then whats in all of azeroth and outlands.

  39. Serhim - January 25th, 2009 @ 2:02 pm UTC

I don’t know if someone pointed it out before, but your description is slightly wrong. They’re not moose-like, they’re boars with one moose antler on their forehead. That doesn’t make them all that mooselike. Also, they’re not huge. They’re quite small compared to other northrend beasts, and most of them, except the higher level males, are smaller than, say, a kodo mount or even a horse/skeletal horse. They may have looked huge in the images Blizz released at start, but they aren’t.
