PTR 2.4.0: Patch Notes

The PTR realms for Patch 2.4.0 appear to be on their way up tonight, although character copying is either down or overloaded (as usual) and I had to snag a PTR client off of Curse.

But regardless, the PTR patch notes are up and available on the WoW website for once (instead of just in the PTR forums). Below are the hunter and pet-related tidbits, as well as random things I found interesting. You will of course want to read the entire notes for all the other bits.

[Edit: Blizzard has stated that some changes are on the PTR build but not yet in the PTR patch notes, while other changes are planned for this patch but not yet implemented -- those changes will be added to the notes when they are implemented. So keep that in mind as you read these -- they are not complete.]

General

  • Characters will now retain talented spell ranks so when they retalent they do not have to relearn the spells from trainers. [Ed. - Woot! Now I might take Aimed Shot again.]
  • Spirit-Based Mana Regeneration: This system has been adjusted so that as your intellect rises, you will regenerate more mana per point of spirit.
  • Weapon Skill: Points will be gained faster in weapon skills for levels 1 through 59.

Hunter

  • Equipping a thrown weapon while in the middle of an Auto-Shot will no longer cause animation issues.
  • Casting Flare while in any way not visible, will no longer cause your flare to be invisible to other players.
  • Hunter’s Mark: Hunters with Improved Hunter’s Mark will now properly overwrite Hunter’s Mark cast by Hunters without the talent.
  • The stamina tooltip for hunter pets will now display the proper health increase. [Ed. - Ah, good. That will make things easier for me.]

Professions

  • Fishing: New Fishing Daily Quests! Visit the mysterious old man fishing at Silmyr Lake outside of Shattrath City to discover what treasures he has to offer. [Ed. - Hmm .. I may have to expand to three daily quests.]

Items

  • Moongraze Stag Tenderloin can now be consumed by hunter pets that eat meat.[Ed. - I just assumed it was especially rancid.]
  • Winterfall Firewater: The tooltip no longer specifies only melee attack power.

User Interface

  • Stacked items for sale at the auction house now display the per unit price and per unit buyout price in the item mouseover.

Bug Fixes

  • Pets are now able to properly attack mobs near the walls on the ramps in Zul’Aman, Bear Wing.

In addition, there seem to be quite a few interesting changes to dungeons, group quests, and raids, plus a lot more UI changes. I haven’t listed all those changes here because I’m not terribly interested in them and I don’t know enough about them to pick out the truly astounding changes anyway. So you should really take a gander yourself.

And as always, if you come across something interesting on the PTR (when it finally goes up), please do drop me a line!

    You’ve seen the phoenix, right?

It’ll probably just be a non-combat pet, but here’s hoping.

Thats jus too good to be true surely. I got in to being a hunter in the 1st place because i wanted to know if you could tame a griffon for your pet. Im still sulking i took too long about taming the ghost wolf.

    Rasen, phoenix?

The PTR still isn’t up, but MMO-Champion has some model viewer shots of new items up, including something labeled “Phoenix Pet”. Traditionally, though, things labeled “pet” this way have been non-combat pets.

    Also, two new instances.

The Phoenix pet, Fire Dancer model and Summer tabards make me think that the revamped holiday Kisirani was promising is the Midsummer Fire Festival. Good for me–I’ll be out of school and just working for the summer, so I’ll have time to indulge in the benefits of the season. 0:) I was worried the updated holiday was going to be the Lunar Festival or Noblegarden.

Actually…the phoenix based items will be for the new 25-man instance, the Sunwell Platuea. They’re moving Sunstrider there as the final boss…wonder who’s replacing him in the Eye? Probably some lame general. Just think how much harder the mount will be to get now.

  8. Slagathor - February 10th, 2008 @ 4:40 am UTC

No no, Kael is the last boss in the 5-man instance, he’s revived from the dead and has a big green crystal in the middle of his chest. The final boss of the 25-man is Kil’Jaeden.

  9. Nalanthus - February 10th, 2008 @ 3:10 pm UTC

Actually, Slagathor, if you’ve ever hung around Shattrath when a Verdant Sphere is turned in, you know that Kael was never actually killed. “Beaten, but alive”, as he puts it. Via that scripted event, his return and the eventual s**t hitting the fan that’s called the Sunwell was foreshadowed pretty clearly. Granted, Kael didn’t come out and say “Hai guyz! Guess wut! Im bringin Kil’jaeden back!” but he did hint about serving a higher power and that we’re all doomed.
On the subject of the crystal in his chest, I think that it was there all along, it was just cleverly hidden beneath his robe. If you take a look at the original Kael, you’ll see his robe juts out with a little crystal right about where “Broken” Kael’s crystal is.
Now, as far as Jangalian’s original question goes, they (meaning Blizz) might use the same logic for “Broken” Kael existing in Sunwell while Kael still exists in the Eye as they did for Thrall being able to be in Orgrimmar and Nagrand at the same time. However, we won’t know for sure until 25 very patient (or bored) people have the time to venture into the Eye on the PTR and pay Kael a visit.

  10. Slagathor - February 10th, 2008 @ 5:25 pm UTC

No, I’ve never hung around Shattrath when a Verdant Sphere is turned in, and no the crystal was not there before because it’s frikkin huge.

Upping the pick rate on Fel Lotus, and making it so the Skettis tree-guys will be herbalized for Fel Lotus as well has made me one happy Alchemist! Flasks for everyone!!!!

I’m pissed about them removing ANOTHER and most important set of attunements.
Coming from a guild who (in my absence >.>) have kick vashj’s ass multiple times, downed kael about a month ago, and as of this week downed bosses 2 and 3 (excuse me if i miss counted) and are most likely attempted Azgalor before calling it quits, this week should bring his and most likely archies downfall, it’s kind of a knife and butter situation.
getting back to the point, the BC brought with it the title “You are NOT Prepared” and now they’re turning it into a playground for anyone who thinks “OMGZORS LET GO GETS T6!!!!”

  13. Mania - February 11th, 2008 @ 10:31 pm UTC

If it makes you feel any better, Mikeoneal, it will never, ever be a playground for me. ;>

  14. Mikeoneal - February 12th, 2008 @ 3:52 am UTC

Aw Mania I’m sure if you were on uldum we could hook you up with the best raiding guilds on server, well once we make horde alts lol, or if you wanted to become a switcher :P.
Just sucks cuz we were old WOW raiding guild with issues, and after a huge blow up we reformed and kicked ass in BWL and were fine tuning our Neff strategy late november early December with BC coming out that january >< then the holiday came and never finished
Like they’re toying with us soon as the prize is in reach they yank it away lol sure they’re tons of guilds in similar situations.

has anyone noticed when training a low lvl pet that you arent getting training points or loyalty? I just trained a low level boar 15 lvls and nothing have been feeding food 10 lvls above him.

  17. Mania - February 25th, 2008 @ 3:53 pm UTC

Bloodfeather: Just to be clear, are you seeing this on the PTR or on live?

  18. Goodmojo - March 21st, 2008 @ 12:38 pm UTC

I am so frustrated with Blizzard, when when when are they going to fix the
existing pets in the game?? Thank you for giving raptors and ravangers dash.
Like they needed more stuff, what about spiders? or all the other one skill wonders
we have in the game? What about sporebats?? with none except what is learned from trainers.
Wouldn’t it be so cool to see spiders, crocks, in high level places? All you see are cats, raptors, ravangers and boars… at least boars have some nice skins more than the others.
I have posted on the game forums but no Blizzard has responded.

  19. Aulvin - March 22nd, 2008 @ 1:12 am UTC

You must not have gotten very deep into Outland if you think that there are no crocs or spiders in higher level areas, Goodmojo. A brief glance at Petopia shows that Ridgespine Horrors are level 68 spiders that live in the Blade’s Edge Mountains, having a very nice and menacing red, black, and yellow coloration, and the Barbscale Crocolisks of Netherstorm to be level 68-69, with the albino skin that Sewer Beast was famous for. The most common complaint though comes from the fact that there are no new higher level boars, the highest level tamable boar being a level 60 Plagued Swine from the Eastern Plaguelands with Charge 6 and Gore 8.

Adding new abilities to some old pets, such as a web or poison ability for spiders, would be great for Blizzard to do but developing “new” content is a lot harder to do than simply allowing old dogs to learn new tricks.
