What I Like About Hunters

Well, as usual, I am late to the party. Many more perspicacious bloggers than I have already posted about the first shared topic from Blog Azeroth, suggested by Siha at Banana Shoulders. But considering how light I was on posts this week, and the fact that the antibiotics are already having a salutatory effect, I thought I’d chime in also.
Q: What do you enjoy about the class you play the most?
The class I play the most is the hunter class. In fact, other than a rogue bank alt (stuck at level 11) and the mage my husband forced me to try (stuck at level 14), my other 13 characters are all hunters. (Note, however, that I am not actively playing all 13 of them right now!) And I’m sure that one day I will sacrifice the bank slots and my husband’s love and delete those two annoying non-hunters …
Of course if you are familiar with this blog and with it’s sister site Petopia, you know that I am very much in love with the hunter pet system. I’m a fool for broad, accessible game systems with just a hint of depth, and moreover I love animals. For me, it’s all about the pets!
But that’s not my answer.
No, I have to be completely honest here: the thing I enjoy most about playing the hunter class is the fact that I can play the hunter class. I am a notoriously bad player. I get distracted and impatient, I do stupid things even when I know I shouldn’t, I deliberately ignore other people’s advice (and my own, when it comes to it). I hate to group with other players. I’m quite social, but I will fight tooth and nail against being forced into a group for any reason whatsoever. I am easily frustrated and the smallest thing will turn me off and send me back to reading web pages instead of playing.
And yet, despite all that, I have a level 70 hunter (plus three in their 40s and another five in the 20s). Not only can I play, but I can progress at a rate that feels reasonable to me. I’m able to see most of the content I want to see (even if sometimes I am seeing it from 20 levels above). I sometimes get frustrated, but so far the experience as a whole has been fun enough to get me back into the game after I’ve cooled down. That’s not something I can usually say.
So I’m sticking with hunters. I’ve got a good thing going here.
By the way, if you are a WoW blogger or think you may want to become a WoW blogger, you should definitely check out Blog Azeroth. It already contains many excellent articles and resources for WoW bloggers, but more than that it represents a burgeoning community of really helpful people.

You know, even though you hate grouping, I think I would really enjoy grouping with you. :) There is a wonderful synergy in two hunters wiping out everything in their path, handling adds with aplomb, knowing without saying a word how to handle each encounter.

Yeah … see … those are things I just don’t do. There is no aplomb here! *grin*
yeah, the BlogAzeroth need more wowbloggers to blog and discuss some subjects.
^^
5 hunters can do incredible things, specially if you cross specs BM or two or three and give a few MM’s a shot, but im sorry Survivals are NOT hunters and soon as i stone skin/bestial wrath out of ur wyvern sting ill show u why >:) Rawr
Right Mikeoneal, I’m sure your right, survival hunters can’t do any other things, after all I can CC 5 mobs at once if needed(sure 12 seconds later2 of them are loose and 26 seconds later the other 3 start getting rowdy), but hey thats nothing incredable at all, why all class/specs can do that!
Don’t worry Mania, your still ahead of me, I still haven’t gotten round to making an account at blog Azeroth *blush* its on my to do list I’ll get round to it someday!
In my defense I’ve become so anti survivalist via a pro surv hunter back in the MCBWL days who i didnt click with too well so it tends to tranfer into the debate.
But either way from what i know and have seen it takes an absurd amount of agility to make surv work, and while hunters succeed in CC’ing where many classes come up immune killing said mobs is most likely take considerably longer then what myself or a MM hunter would take, only benefit is that those mobs would be guaranteed ur loot where i have the possiblilty of not getting to the mob in time and having it tagged by a lock or something.
And while i know there a truly great BM hunters and MM hunters i can only surmise that there are some truly incredible hunters weilding the Surv spec, but i can honestly say I’ve never seen one outside the occasional hunter in greens and blues in the occassional BG.
Sorry if anything i said horribly offends, but i cant help what i am, heart piercing, quick drawing, intimidating, intouch with the power of the beast hunter that i am
I have been forced to play a Survival hunter and although it is not all bad with Counterattack and Wyvern sting, I wouldn’t realy recommend it. I am thinking about switching to MM (my main hunter is BM) and pwning things like that with my awsome barking dog (spot).
By the way, Mania, don’t worry about not liking groups. I can be like that too, saying excuses like, “Umm, I have to go soon..” etc. in my defense. I am just like that.
Gad i love my wolf. I shall now leave you to argueing and click on my wolf.
ClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClickClick….
well i started a hunter next thing i know i’m lvl 40 :D i think the hunter class is soo cool because, its awsome Randges power tracking, melee moves, mail, races and of course the best bit id pets pets PETS!!! the abbity to show off that you have the most imba pet ever the abbity to own ppl with it :P there just a relli easy class how ever there is skill in the easy makeing them more of an expet class that y i9 think they own , my shammie sux compaired to theis guys :D
Mania, I don’t believe you! :D
No one ever does. *sigh*
I think I like hunters for the exact opposite reason you do. Sure, it’s fun to mess around in the outside world, but the real joy comes when I can show off my hunter-ish skills in instances, kiting, misdirecting, chain trapping, pet offtanking, and all that fun stuff, and topping the damage meters while doing so (barring something like, say, a really excellent rogue). Plus, it’s much easier to show off my 70 Ghost Wolf in action in an instance than in the outside world. :p
Though I do love the pets. They’re an element of customization that you find nowhere else in WoW.
Pets ftw.
Also, Mikeoneal, go look up Shifttusk of Shifttusk Does PvP. He makes deep Surv look good. :D
I really like beaing able to prevent a wipe multaple times by pulling mobs off the healers and then kyting them/trapping them.
I can’t find any video evidence of SHifttusk besides the grainy fraps of what apears to not be shifttusk, but maybe one of his horde friends?
All i can find is his blog, so until i see him in action i cant say anything about him, although i will say if he has as much arena gear as i think he has, he is what i would consider “unkillable”. Tier gear vs. PvP resilience i can’t pump enough damage into him before he eventually brings me down whatever the spec, but whoever can arena that much and win i have to give respect to.
Heh if only i went to college a year later I’d have full t5 and working on t6 then those resilience clad hunters would be more intimidated ><
I can’t say that I’m all that pleased hearing this anti-survivalist jive, seeing as I play a survivalist hunter myself. >=( I made the switch from BM to survival at 60 and didn’t look back. It kept me from hanging up my hunter for good.
How about playing what spec YOU like and not dissing others for playing the spec THEY like, hm?
Haha, Hunter is the only class i can play aswell. I tried druid (I love the cat form), I tried pally, I tried shaman and mage before I was like.. okay last time im going to try again. And now 54 lvls later I’m still with my hunter.
Oh come on it’s an opinion, I’ve been survival and as a pre BC raiding hunter i was obviously MM and hated every minute of it. Xpac finally allowed me to express my true inner hunter. If i wanted to just sit back and dps i would have rolled mage, but as all my fellow Petopians will agree its the pet that makes an incredible bonus to being a hunter.

I am so glad I am not the only one! This sums up exactly why I love my 3 Hunters over my 2 non hunters (warlock and a druid). I’m an incredibly social personn, but in game, I would rather take on that orange elite by myself then group with some people for a quest.
I have to say, I get yelled at too by friends when they see me “leveling another hunter?!”. But its just also the feel of the class that gets me. Rikaku (my night elf) with her blue frostsaber and Ghost wolf. Hiiro (blood elf) with her Old Cliff Jumper who looks just like her orc mount. Selantis (draenei) and her raptors Argo and Domon. They all feel like different personalities too. Even if you all had the same pet, they each feel different.
I havent leveled in about a year any class, so leveling this draenei is so refreshing from the hustle and bustle of 70 raiding.
As for specs, I truly believe as long as you ejoy the spec, forget what others think about Hunter specs. They’re all good, it just depends on the hunters ability to play with that spec. I’ve played all specs of Hunter for a long period of time, but for me, it’s beastmastery. I’ve been beastmastery long since before the days of Burning Crusade even being whispered of being created. Back in the days when you had to be MM, or nothing in a raid. Honestly, I love BM. I wouldn’t trade it for any spec. But that’s just my opinion.
But when I group with my hunter friends for a quick instance run or quest. Nothing is like both of us and pets getting heroic presence, ferocious inspiration and trueshot aura. Even if we’re playing around, its fun. So I wouldn’t sweat the small stuff of “which spec is better”, because really, it’s all about what you like.
Love to all my fellow hunters, Rika’s out!
Heh, have to agree with you, Mania. My hunter is my lone wolf, and the character I am most likely to avoid a group with. I have soloed nearly every non-instance, less then five man quest ((And one five man, but shooting Dimensius from the doorway really doesn’t count.)) just to see if I could. Its not that my Illidius is bad in groups, on the contrary he is the anti-wipe. I just prefer the feel of soloing, just me and my wolf/cat/serpent. And while I know I harp about how it doesn’t matter what sort of pet you have, each of my hunters has a different pet set up, and each one feels so different.
I have four seventies, a hunter, warlock, paladin, and druid, and numerous mid to high levels of all classes, but hunters are the only class I can make multiple classes of and not get bored with.
i guess i am as mad about hunters as i am about wow ,,,,,
i have just decided to go horde properly on my server , hehe , 4 hunters and sad to say a priest , dam shame there is not an undead hunter or i would be the first in the line waiting to start one.
i rarely group , never found any real need to , as the few times i have tried with unknowns i have died a lot , so for now at least with my guild when we manage to all get on at the same time we are starting to do a few instances , but with a guild with only a few level 70,s in it is not so easy to group , which i must admit i do not mind about.
going back to my latest madness i now after just 2 days play have 2 level 10 hunters a level 6 and a level 10 priest , each will have its own professions , and i intend to do very little if any buying at the auction house , my guess is it will take a while to get any real gold saved up but at least i know others will not be making their gold from me , the priest has made bags for all the others so far and made herself a wand from materials she disenchanted after making them , so soon they will all have enchants , my bloodelf hunter is already making enough bullets for all the four that will eventually be made , the one last character i have to create will be my tauren hunter and as she has the racial ability will be my herbalist/alchemist ,
am i mad or just in love with the way hunters can take on just about anything , on allied side i have already 3 hunters from 30 to 70 a priest and a druid all doing all the professions except blacksmithing , but i may add that one day
Sandralover, no your not crazy but honestly no disrespect to any class. but druids are some of the best herbalists in game period. Not only for the fact we can now stay in flight form while doing it (once u get it) but if your <68 soothe beast soothe beast soothe beast /herb /cat /stealth. Not as ruthless as killing everything in your line of sight like i do with all my other 70’s, but an incredibly useful trick. And for the people who already hate me for my ideas and pro BM stance tehy shouldnt be surprised to see i have a feral Druid lol
Bah, hatred isn’t something I can work up over a danged video game, LOL! I just get annoyed about the Surv spec bashing. I hear it ALOT, both in and out of game. =P
I also play a druid, currently resto spec and loving it!
[...] of you are alternately laughing or cringing at this point, but I did warn you — I’m a terrible player. At any rate, this routine drained mana like crazy and I occasionally lost Banshee, but it sorta [...]
Could never go resto, … again… had to for the epic flight quest, Anzu was a bitch atleast before the nerf.
Sometimes get criticized for having three dps class 70’s yet the druid is fairly bad dps. Have so much nicer bear gear then cat ><. and surprise my lock is Demonology the beastmaster of the locks lol.
[...] I seen a lot of blether by a bunch of paladins, hunters, and priest all talkin’ aboot how their class was smashin’ so ah figured I’d have [...]
I’m not the biggest group fan either. I usually just go off on my own solo all my quests and only group to help others or for instances. The Beast Within made it so easy to solo I have no idea if I’ll ever not solo!
I love hunters because of the easy of lvling them you can lvl so quickly with hunters, unlike all the other class’s that i have played, and pvp is much more fun with um…. i love topping those tables..!
i have played WoW fo 3 years now and can’t get enough of lvling hunters.. sod the others classes i tried in the early days
I have to say of all the specs, I enjoyed survival the most well some sort of sur/marks spec. It dose (I’m pretty sure) only really shine when you’re off getting yourself past that 1k agility (Enjoyed passings it), but it has nice CC and always gave me the feel I was playing a pre-bc hunter again ^_^
All in all I really love the feel of the hunter class, the weird way it flows kinda thing hehe.
(Speced Marks at the moment not enough agility on all the pvp gear ;_;)
I am pretty much the same way, always prefer to solo rather than group. I also absolutely LOVE the “animal” classes, my main is a feral druid, my second main is a hunter, & I have 2 other druids & 2 more hunters as well.
