Name That Pet: Sekhmet’s Frostsaber

This episode of Name That Pet comes to us courtesy of Sekhmet from The Venture Co (US-RpPvP) server. She has achieved her goal of taming a Frostsaber Pride Watcher, one of the very lovely lavender cats of Winterspring — but she doesn’t know what to name it! I hope we can help.

Ghost Wolf Removal Roundup

As I posted yesterday, it looks like our chance to tame the Grimtotem Spirit Guide, aka the ghost wolf, is gone. And the hunter community, as expected, is not reacting well to the news.

Ghost Wolf Gone

Just a short while ago, Drysc posted the unfortunate news on the WoW Hunters forum: the ghost wolf (aka the Grimtotem Spirit Guide) can no longer be tamed. Drysc says:

Through a hotfix we’ve recently removed the ability to tame a Grimtotem Spirit Guide. Players who have already gone through the trouble of taming the creature will be able to keep them unchanged. This hotfix only removes the possibility to tame this creature from here on.

The removal of the spirit guide has been debated within design discussions for a while now as to what impact the pet and its precedent has on the game.
The unintended nature of the taming, the undead status of the guide, appearance of the wolf in relation to the feel of the hunter class, and the complex processes of taming were all issues touched upon and discussed.

Ultimately the discussions brought us to the conclusion that this should not be a permanent addition to the pet selection available to hunters; however, those that have already tamed them should be allowed to keep them due to their efforts in obtaining one.

Previously, Blizzard had said that they would be leaving the ghost wolf as a tameable creature. Apparently, they changed their mind.

My thanks to Alanonymous for bringing this to my attention.

Maja: Level 40 Tallstrider vs Hyena

While I was waiting on Patch 2.3.2 with its faster pet leveling, I spent a lot of time with my newest hunter, Maja. About a week ago she hit level 40 and promptly bought a black hawkstrider. (The original plan had been to purchase an skeletal horse instead, but try as I might I am still 5500 reputation short of Exalted with Undercity. So it’s a chicken for now!) But level 40 seems like a good time to pause and take a comparitive look at the stats and utility of her two pets: Sarcasm the tallstrider and Scorn the hyena.

Choosing Your First Pet: Azuremyst Isle

This article is part of a series for new hunters on choosing your first pet.

Azuremyst Isle is the homeland of the Draenei. It is only accessible to players who have purchased the Burning Crusade expansion. Bloodmyst Isle is the second island in the Draenei archipelago and also has a few creatures in the right level range. Bloodmyst Isle is directly north of Azuremyst Isle. Azuremyst (and therefore Bloodmyst also) is easily reached from Auberdine in Darkshore via boat, which makes both islands quite accessible to young Night Elves.

Ghost Wolf Phases

Chigawaa, a level 70 hunter in the guild Hellfire Club on Suramar, sent me this excellent graphic showing his ghost wolf Mirage in four different “phases”: normal, buffed with Furious Howl, poisoned, and in Bestial Wrath. Click below for a full-sized view.

Says Chigawaa: “I really don’t mind being Poisoned anymore.” And I can see why! Is that one amazing wolf or what?

PetEmote

Just a quick note today while I compulsively level pets. *grin* I’ve been seeing a lot of references lately to a WoW UI Mod called PetEmote that allows you to easily perform emotes that look as if they are coming from your pet.

For instance, I type: /pet sniffs the air and then whines softly.
And people around me see: Maja’s hyena Scorn sniffs the air and then whines softly..

The mod is very configurable — you can set up the beginning of the emote in a variety of ways to suit your needs — and there are random emotes to play with per family as well.

I roleplay lackadaisically, but I’m excited by the potential in this mod for personalizing my pets. And Funny, the developer, is actively seeking feedback and suggestions for new emotes and features. So check it out!

Patch 2.3.2 is Here - with Faster Pet Leveling

It’s here! It’s here! (Unfortunately as I type this, the realms are still down. But they’ll be up soon enough, and then …) It’s finally here!

Why am I getting so excited over a minor bugfix patch with no big new content? One reason: Pet leveling speed has been increased.

Name That Pet: Ysildra’s Pets

Final Names: Dieltalah & either Connor or Isengard

I shouldn’t have picked on Styfios a couple of weeks ago when he asked for help naming both his pets — it turns out that many hunters have a bit of a block when it comes to pet-naming. Luckily, I have you guys willing to help us out!

So today we have a plea from Ysildra of Draenor (EU). Ysildra writes:

Big Red Kitty Shares His Expertise Visually

Big Red Kitty has created two excellent videos for new hunters. The first, the BRK Lowbie-Hunter Guide Movie, focuses on the fact that hunters are a ranged class and covers basic techniques for staying at range, even before you get a pet. The second is the BRK Intro to Pet Training Movie; this one walks new hunters through the complicated process of learning and teaching pet skills.

These videos aren’t everything a hunter needs to know — that isn’t entirely feasible in a 14 minute video! — but they make an excellent starting point for players new to the hunter class.
