Name That Pet: Mazeku’s Lynx
Mazeku of Bloodscalp (PVP) writes:
I’ve been trying to come up with a name for my newest hunters first pet. But to no avail. Thus, after reading several of the previous name pet topics I’ve come to your blog to see if I could find a good name for Mazeku’s Precious feline partner.
As it stands I’ve always wanted one of the precious Red Lynx felines from Silvermoon. But sadly my main hunter was a level 70 and these lovely cats are only found in the low levels of 6-7 and that would have taken far to long to level it. Thus I came up with a new character that I’ve wanted to test out several of the new features of hunters.
A little about the character in general. Even though I am a resident of Bloodscalp (PVP) I am a very good roleplayer. Mazeku, was born in a royal family who has lived a very bad life. As a young blood elf he’s gone through a rough time with his mother, she considered him an abomination for wishing to seek through his fathers class as a Hunter, where she was a Warlock. He despised demons with a passion and anything related to the dark magics his mother study wasn’t what he wished to be.
He sought comfort with the little silver dragonhawk that his father has bought him when he was just a starting hunter. His first natural pet known as Glider, and this quickly allowed for him to presue becoming a hunter. Much to his mothers disapproval. He adored the Springpaw cubs as a young, beginning hunter and through all of his leveling has wished to actually tame a cub to raise up as his faithful companion.
On that day when he finally reached his hunter ‘adult hood’ he eagerly finished his quest. Taming first, to his distaste the Dragonhawk, though elegant and beautiful in his mind they weren’t what he was looking for but he must bear with it for his quest. Then to the Elder Springpaws, their brown coloration was nice on the eyes but he just did not adore the brown pelt as much as that red shiny fur of the cubs. And finally, after his long trek to Ghostlands and back he got the Mistbat. Bats, they were an interesting thing but they were considered to be ‘dark’ to him.
Finishing his taming training he got through his training and eagerly learned how to feed and teach his pet skills that would literally be a savior of his life. Eager to tame his dream he has gone back and tamed a level 1 Springpaw Cub, and has now raised that lovely cub to be a loyal companion to aid him by his side. Many laughed, saying that the cub would die but he forever proved them wrong, his cub is his best friend since his father has fallen to battle and his mother wishes nothing to do with him.
Now all there is that task of picking out the perfect name for his loyal companion. I’ve gone through Several names, Lord Mazeku doesn’t wish for his pet to be a silly named critter. I’ve gone through several of the servants names that he has but none of the seemed to fit. Falassion, Ezkiel, Ezekiel, Eclipse were a few choices but I could never hit enter for them. I am looking more so for a meaningful name. As on my main hunter when I finally reached that level of 57 and tamed Rak’shiri for the first time, I named her after a favorite character of mines… Long the Tiger from Bloody Roar. But I don’t see Long matching a Lynx, as Long was a tiger heh.
For this precious feline I am looking for either a elven name or, something related to the Japanese cultures around the world. Its just so hard trying to keep up for names these days with hunter pets.
I’m not sure what I can add to that! But I know we can come up with some great name suggestions for Mazeku’s lynx.

I wonder whether someone has told Mazeku that a similar lynx model can be found close to Sylvannar in the Blade’s Edge Mountains? Level 65-ish, I believe. I can fully understand his desire for that model though, my draenai hunter went on a suicide mission from Bloodmyst Isle up to Everwood (yes, all through Azeroth, WP, EP) and got his first AD reputation with level 15. *grin* It’s a beautiful pet and I still have it, never changed it.
I once got a springpaw for my orc hunter, only to realize that he didn’t really fit with her so I later released him. I loved his name, Adoni, though. It’s an Australian Aboriginal word for “sunset” which perfectly describes the colours of a springpaw.
Japanese: Aki (autumn), Monogatari (story or tale), Kiniro (golden).
Those are the first ones that popped into my head, there are also lots of names from Japanese literature that are on the tip of my tongue but I can’t think of them right now.
(I did a lot of Japanese Study-related classes in college… been a little while though.)
@Serafina: That’s the brown lynx, though, not the gorgeous red of the Springpaw cubs and stalkers.
For Mazeku, I’d go with Akemi for the lynx. Japanese for “dawn”. :)
Akaotôto is my bastardization of Red (aka) and younger brother (otôto) in japanese. That is a way of saying the cub was, and is, the only family that you have left in an honorable way. Every single one of my character and pet names are special in some way, either celtic, norse, or latin, or japanese. I’d be happy to help with any name you require, as I’m a veteran of rp servers from different games as well. My hunter on Destromath is Orxata, and I’m just learning about playing as a Hordie there.
I personally have one of those lynxes for my dwarf, which I tamed after taming a brown one just inside the Pass to get its skills at 20-21, and I did it the hard way, by running all the way through WPL and then EPL and dying multiple times, only realizing I could run through the zone as a ghost about 4 hours later. That did make it a bit more worth it, and I see very few hunters with one at low levels. I have a picture of two others with me in Ironforge somewhere… =D
I love your choice of pet, I’m one of those alliance nuts who went absolutely crazy about them. So crazy that I picked it twice: the day TBC came out on my NE at L60 (WS furby grind was great for levelling her up) and again after a corpse run through EPL on a L10 Draenei (didn’t know about the ghost run & log screen trick back then).
“Anar’alah belore” is “By the light of the sun” in Thalassian (High-Elf/Blood-Elf language), and “Anu belore dela’na” means “The sun guides us”; that makes me think that Belore might mean sun.
From one of the many name list websites:
Yata (F) the star-mirror of the Sun Goddess (Japanese Mythology)
Teruko (F) sunshine girl (Japanese)
Marishi-Ten Goddess of light, of sun and moon (Japanese Mythology)
Nagato A character from the anime Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.
Tsuruya Another character from that anime.
McAfee Yep. The virus program. I named my latest cat, Echeyakee, that. O.o
Domu - Child
Berugu - Mountain (guess that would better fit a gorilla)
Buddy of mine in JH and HS had a black cat named Domu… he was the terror of the apt complex. He would beat up dogs at night for fun…
apollo would be my choice as he is the greek god of the sun, the word Lynx is greek for meaning to shine., this would be befiting for your perfect pet from wich you wish will shine in the future. like the glory of silvermoon.
I have two pets myself, as an orc hunter. a wolf named lobo, and of course a lion named Tsavo, in reference to Tsavo africa with the man eating lions. as you probably guess I use Tsavo for pvp. lol no mater what choice you make remember Hunter=FTW
Moicano, like the hair of punks uses.
PillowPants
i named my red lynx (now 70) Catalyst a play on the cat name but also a play on words as well my pet is the “Catalyst” for my encounters…
My husband and I each have one … Cayenne and Nutmeg
Hey, Mania…sorry for taking up blogspace, but I didn’t know how else to contact you…
About caster pets…I think those that have spell abilities do loads more damage with their spells if they are a caster.
Reason for thinking this: I trained a dragonhawk today, and watched the damage he was putting out. It was pretty significant…for a lvl 7 dragonhawk, his fire breath did 24 damage over 3 seconds. However, once I learned the fire breath skill and tried to apply it to another animal (which obviously didn’t work, but it was worth the shot), it reported being able to only do 6 damage over 2 seconds. That’s a HUGE difference…4x the damage! The dragonhawk only had lvl 1 fire breath, so it must be related to being a caster…they lose in health and armor, but they put out big elemental damage. It makes sense…they’re more like a mage or priest.
Check it out! If it’s true, they might not be such a bad choice after all (if you’re not looking for a tank, that is…like serious PVPers).
Derek, I’m trying out this same theory with a dragonhawk myself. I have a non-caster Bloodfalcon on Ansawa, and my Horde hunter Doallyn now has one of the caster Crazed Dragonhawks. Once Doallyn hits 70, I’ll be working on gearing him as close to Ansawa’s current gear as I can, respec him to 42/19/0 like she is, and compare the damage they put out. If the difference between the two is nontrivial and biased in the direction of the caster, I may try this with wind serpents as well and check one of the caster Outland blues against Ansawa’s level 70 Son of Hakkar in terms of the damage Lightning Breath does.
What you’re probably seeing there, though, is possibly the fact that Fire Breath scales with the dragonhawk’s level AND with a hunter’s RAP. I know FB2, which is supposed to be 111 damage spread out over three seconds, ticks for ~124 every second when coupled with Ansawa’s 1500+ RAP.
I need to check the equation for applying a hunter’s “spell damage” (i.e., what they would get by bonuses from their intellect) to their pet’s spell damage. My hunch is that might be a factor as well…and I may need to actually get and level a caster dragonhawk or wind serpent on Ansawa to compare their damage with her non-caster pet of the same species, just to control more for racial bonuses and whatnot. Hm.
Okay, kinda late to this thread, or whatever, but it seems you’ve already chosen a name, but don’t know it. Twice in the OP you call your cat “Precious.” Done deal, imo ;)
Here’s an idea, name him/her “Konnichiwa” as in “Hello”, as in “Hello Kitty” :-)
Here’s a few other suggestions…
- “Kitana” (I play on the word Katana)
- “Seppuku”
- “Metsubushi” (Eye closer)
- “Alainn” (Gaelic for Beautiful)
Here’s a couple of fun suggestions…
- “Fritz” (As in Fritz the Cat, an animated movie that to this day must remain in the “Adult/XXX” section, even though the content in it would look like an episode of “Little House on the Prarie” compared to some of the stuff movies have in them today.)
- “Poohsayeetor” (You figure it out. LOL)
- “Gossamer” (The name of the big, red monster from Bugs Bunny. The classic, “Monsthers are thuch interesthing people…”
- “Cringer” (He-Man’s cat before he becomes “Battle Cat”)
I know you asked for japanese or japanese sounding names, but I found a few that are latin that might also appeal. (These are rough translations, mind you.)
Oriens - Sunrise, morning.
Occasus - Sunset, west, also destruction.
Aestus - Passionate fire.
Ah, the hunter’s pet. I put forward either ShadowBane, fitting in with your hate of warlockery. Or shirvallah, the troll god of the tigers.
well, i like them pets too :D yes pets still confuzle me but i can always think of good names,
Aura
Blaze
Summer
or random names that looks cool :P
solour
soulor
eldounr
etr :P
also name it after that poinless guy that sells “soap on a rope” :P or random mobbs that are freindly lol :P have fun rember if you think of it it will be better :)
I agree with Bobo above. You keep referring to your lynx as precious and it seems to me that would be a great name. And if you hate the idea of “Precious” as a name, translate it into another language. But it does seem to me, based on your original post, that you’ve kind of already named it. :-)
My lvl 70 draenei hunter has one a springpaw lynx, I named her Sunrise. I wanted this cat bad enough that I crossed both plaugelands alone at lvl 40 to get to the area outside silvermoon to get one. I actually managed to lvl her to 70 from lvl 6. It took quite a while, Sunrise finally caught up to me at lvl 60. Lol, I spent 20 lvls without a functional pet…that was rough :)
Hey, I’m am Alliance Dwarf and ghost run to Eversong to get this pet when I was lvl10 ^^ It’s been my companion from lvl10 to now (curently lvl63).
I named him Matahari, the Malay word for Sun, simply because his skin color is only vailable in Eversoong, home of the Blood Elves who have relations to all thing daylight and sunny, sunwell etc.
I love many of the names already mentioned, but thought I’d throw in the name of my own lovely red lynx which I (as mentioned in other threads :P) crazily tamed at lvl 70…
The name I chose is Ember, for the inner glow always waiting to roar into a fire at your beck and call. Also, it ofc fits the red colours of the skin and mane.
I tamed the ghost saber from Darkshore on my BE hunter (and boy was he a pain to get, needed to find 20+ figurines before he spawned), then I had the same problem as you, I couldn,t think of a good enough name. So I googled elven translators & found a site for the Forgotten Realms Dark Elf language. I wound up calling him Gulhalrathn, Drow for ghost(gul) saber(halrathn), & I love it. :)
erm i know this is wrong and that but i didnt know how to make my own Name That Pet ,
i just got mazzzarchant (pink talk strider ( i got a lvl 40 xD) odse nay one know a good name?
Gareth, just send an e-mail to mania@maniasarcania.com with a picture of you and your pet and some explanation about what kind of player you are and what kind of name you are looking for. Unfortunately I’m a little backlogged right now, though, so it may take me a while to get a post up.
Nikita
Sepha
Bloodbane
Flash
Flamebeau
Slasher
Redclaw
Gareth - A fantastic name for you to use would be “Dyxlesia”
ROFLMAO
Akamaru
I’d say Eternitius. Strong, willing, lives for eternity. Call him or her Terny if you get bored saying the full name, but I’d say it best suits a nightsaber, found in Teldrassil. I know it’s a noob area, but, man, I love nightsabers, and they level up at more or less the same rate as you do if you get one at level 10, that way your pet’s always more or less the same level as you.
Some Latinate words I like are:
Lux (light)
Luceat (shining light, pronounced loo-CHAY-ott)- Luc for short
Both referring to Mazeku’s choice to turn from the darkness of demonic magic, and his pet as a symbol of that choice. Also-
Irae (wrath, wrathful, pronounced EE-ray)
Mmmaybe close enough to elven to pass? Your call.
(Ganked from the Requiem Masses I’ve sung, so the translation may not be exact.)
Yeah, I agree with Pithrandil, nightsabers are really good at kicking butt in a good fight, but the one thing you must remember is that if you don’t keep nightsabers happy, it’s really really hard to get them happy again and you have to spend at least a gold on getting them happy again. But yeah, apart from that, nightsabers are great creatures and they can help you out seriously in a duel, my one never dies when we’re duelling. :-)
Well Islanzadi is the name of the Elf queen from the Aragon books, or you could go with her daughters name Araya
Sunrise is good… My alt draenei called hers Fireclaw.
Firepaw, Ruby, Sunset, Autumn.
The answer is surprisingly simple
Neko (Japanese for ‘cat’)
I think you should named him mysty
