Name That Pet: Ysildra’s Pets

Final Names: Dieltalah & either Connor or Isengard

I shouldn’t have picked on Styfios a couple of weeks ago when he asked for help naming both his pets — it turns out that many hunters have a bit of a block when it comes to pet-naming. Luckily, I have you guys willing to help us out!

So today we have a plea from Ysildra of Draenor (EU). Ysildra writes:

I’ve had alot of trouble finding a pet that really feels right and now I have tamed these 2 beauties and I have absolutely no clue what to name them:( I would prefer fantasy or some other kind of “mystical” names over silly names.

The wolf is certainly a male but I’m not sure about the carrion bird what sex she/he/it is yet. The wolf I chose because of his capturing green eyes and the colour of his fur just made me wanna pat it. I never looked at him as a possible pet before my BF pointed him out when I was looking at all the pets in Petopia. I dont know what made me want to tame the carrion bird, there was just something about it that fascinated me.

As you can see, Ysildra is a blood elf with an eye for great screenshots. So let’s see if we can help her find some sexy names for her two unnamed pets!

Update: I almost missed this in the deluge of ghost wolf comments, but Ysildra has chosen her names: Dieltalah for the bird and either Connor or Isengard for the wolf. Thank you everyone for your help!

I am offering up “Rumbledon” for the woofie, and “Arcanion” for the birdie.

Hmm well this is funny. I actually tamed the same bird last night to make into a Tank pet for Grp Quests and have no clue as to what to name him errr her. So I will be interested in the suggestions.

As for the Wolf he looks like a Pedro to me, dont know why just the first thing that came to mind and seems to fit him.

    Best of luck 2 ya!!

    You could name the wolf:’Lycaon’
after a Greek mythological figure that was turned into a wolf by Zeus after trying to feed Zeus a plate of human flesh.

as for the bird I’m sorry dont got any ideas =s GL finding a name for both :D

Kind regards Fafhrd Nelf Hunter Bloodfeather (EU) 45/15/1

Hmm, well, the bueatiful brown wolf could be named “Lupis” but Pedro is an awsome name.

As for the bird, “solstice”? I realy don’t know why, maybe cause he has black feathers for the winter solstice and white for the summer one.

    Nice pets!

For the wolf, Connor, a English variant of the Gaelic “Conchobhar”, meaning, roughly, “beloved hound”.

For the two-headed bird, Didymus, the Greek word for “twin”.

Fenris seems the obvious name for that particular wolf.

As for the bird… Chiaroscuro would do it for me. Not mythological, but an art term for light-dark, which suits it’s plumage.

For the bird how about Dieltalah? Its Thalassian for travelling death which seems appropriate for a carrion bird.

As for the wolf, how about Selama which is Thalassian for Justice

These just popped into my head.

    bird: Talach
    wolf: Gustav

  9. Ysildra - January 8th, 2008 @ 9:36 am EST

I love Dieltalah! And the meaning is truly appropriate for her^^ Thanks Lienna alot!

Your name makes me think LOTR. I found a reference to “The Wolves of Isengard” that were housed in dens beneath the tower when Saruman was in control of it. No individual names are given, but I think “Isengard” matches well with yours for the Wolf.

  11. Caiti - January 8th, 2008 @ 10:44 am EST

I think Isengard (comment by Gitsom) is a great name for the Wolf. It sounds very serious and dramatic.

The bird looks like it could take you in its wings and carry you far and wide. I dont have too many name ideas for him/her but…

    Skallor
    Ensithe
    Keathene

As for the sex of the bird…I know how you could find out. (if interested) go to wetlands. On the coast, not horribly close to menethil (but not all that far away) are some shipwrecks. On these boats are undead pirates that curse you and your pet. If the pet is female, it will turn into an undead female. If male, an undead male. Kind of interesting :) I still have to take my own there…I’m curious what he/she is.

  12. Caiti - January 8th, 2008 @ 10:44 am EST

Oh Note: if your character is male, you’d be undead male. So its not a “random” curse that gives you a random gender. Since I’m a male tauren, if cursed, I’d be an undead male.

Just to Clarify the Bird is Female. See below quest.

I want Torgos, king of the bonelashers, dead!

Not long ago, while I was out hunting at Veil Rhaze on the western edge of the wastes, he fell upon me.

He took my eye, and now I would have his life! Bring me one of his tail feathers as proof and I’ll give you a worthy reward.

You’ll need his mate Trachela’s carcass though to call him down as he’s deathly afraid of the old arakkoan scarecrow known as Torgos’s Bane.

Find her at Carrion Hill in the northern wastes.

  14. Ysildra - January 8th, 2008 @ 11:54 am EST

I know she’s a female according the quest but it doesent make it impossible for me to think of her as a him, male^^

  15. Messyah - January 8th, 2008 @ 2:33 pm EST

I think Isengard (comment by Gitsom) is a great name for the Wolf. It sounds very serious and dramatic.

Of course it does, its Tolkien. :-)

For the wolf, I suggest “Nikita”. For the bird, I suggest “Windripper”

  16. Darkbander - January 8th, 2008 @ 3:05 pm EST

For the wolf, Bruno comes to mine. And for the bird, Apex.
Lienna? Where did you learn that much thalasian?

  17. Ansawa - January 8th, 2008 @ 3:37 pm EST

Emberheart springs to mind for the wolf. For the bird, I’m not sure yet.

Also, the Wetlands test, I think, is not quite right–I think it uses the sex of the hunter to determine the pet’s sex there. You could test this with a male warlock with his succubus out, but I dunno, succubi may actually have their gender toggles set.

  18. Angelakane - January 8th, 2008 @ 3:38 pm EST

Nishinki for the wolf and cluless about the bird. I’ve never tamed Carrion Birds, they just dont do anything for me

  19. Ragnir - January 9th, 2008 @ 1:54 am EST

    Wolf: Lytreides

    Bird: Rotwing

Wowwiki has the Thalassian that I used for my pet names, I’ll admit its not 100% but its a fictional language so I doubt people will get too uppity. But Diel means travel, Talah means death (according to something Sylvanis said) so Diel’talah means travel death, but looking at the way the language goes it would be changed to traveling, when a ‘ is added between two words one word becomes a descriptor for the other word eg Sin’Dorei which means Children of the blood but we know Sin means blood and Dorei means Children, the words of and the just appear out of no-where.

And as for the wetlands test I’ve tested it with my pets, my lion tamed form the rake came out male (lion with a mane is male, makes sense) and my windserpent tamed from Arikara came out female and the quest to summon that windserpent describes her as female, so it seems to be accurate.

I’d say Canis for the wolf and Pheonixian for the carrion

  22. Ysildra - January 12th, 2008 @ 8:46 am EST

Thanks all for the name suggestions,I have decided to name the bird Dieltalah and the wolf is gonna be either Connor or Isengard, Thank You all again, if it werent for you guys and gals my pets would still be un-named

WoW, tolkien names are always very useful to use for pet names if u get my drift. For pretty much all of my characters i use prefix’s and suffix’s from Tolkiens, The Silmarillion. i have the newer paperback version that has the name stuff in the back. and its all Quenya so that makes it a nice majestic and light shining name. unless of course u use dark names which have no elegancy in it at all. Like Grond. and Daur, Daeg, etc. I name my human mage Sereglin which means blood point, my pet bear tank, Lîthmîr which i believe is grey-mist or something. email me at djfeas001@yahoo if u want a list of some names and/or preffix’s and the like.
    with WoW love, D-man.

and for all u other hunters without pet names and are looking for something realistic and RPG, email me at djfeas001@yahoo.com

I don’t know about the bird, but I think the strength of the long-haired wolf would be well represented by the name “Sampson”.
