Introducing: Maja

Well, I gave in and created a new hunter alt. I’m still laboriously leveling my mage — I did promise my husband I’d make it to 25 — but I was thinking about useful pet comparisons and got excited about an idea I had. So i just had to create a character to try it out …

I’m going to do this character a bit differently than I had planned in that she will be leveling two pet families simultaneously: hyenas and tallstriders. Both these families can learn Bite and Dash, and their stats are mirrored in terms of health and armor. (Hyenas have +5% armor; tallstriders have +5% health.) I’ll concentrate on Natural Armor with the hyena and Great Stamina with the tallstrider, and otherwise do my normal beastmaster thing. I’ll trade off between them as I level, same as I’ve been doing with the crabs. And we’ll see what develops.

I’m also going to take a different tack on posting about this character than I have with Kaet as well. Instead of a blow-by-blow diary, I intend to post only occasional observations about how the pets are doing and the differences I see between them. This should be enough to record my experiences without burning out either my writing urges or your reading urges. :>

Her first hyena will be the orange Kolkar Packhound at level 13, although I intend to eventually trade that in on a red Scarlet Tracking Hound. (The immature orange matures into a lovely blood red.) For tallstriders, I will start with Mazzranache (of course!) at level 10, move to the Strider Clutchmother at level 20 and — if I get that far — finally the Lost Torranche at level 70. (Again, my pet’s plummage will change as it matures.)

My biggest regret is that there are at least three colors of hyenas and three colors of tallstrider I’d like to keep. But the truth is we don’t have space for all the pets we’d like, and even if I could keep them I could never keep them all leveled. So this will have to do.

But what about Maja herself? I’ve got a streak of roleplayer about me, after all, so who is this girl? Well, she’s got a nasty wit … and I do mean nasty. She finds other people’s misfortunes pretty funny; she laughs at their pain (and the hyena joins in, presumably). And like most blood elves she’s a bit vain, she thinks rather highly of herself depsite the lack of evidence that she’s anything special. On the other hand, she really rather dislikes most members of her race — she’d rather hang out with the undead. They share her sense of humor, at least, and she finds them rather less … shallow. And she does have a bit of personal strength: her father committed suicide rather than deal with the fate of the blood elves; her mother threw herself headlong into living for the now and prefers to forget that she ever had a child. So Maja has lived on her own for quite a while.

In that sense her pets fit her well. Both are solid, dependable, not the best pets but useful … and also flashy in their own way, with brightly colored fur and feathers, a wicked laugh and a permanent smugness.

The Scarlet Tracking hound is a nice choice, love their “growl” and the noise they make when they attack, lol. Got one myself, and will not trade him for anything, even thought Blizzard refuses to give him his own skill, sigh. Oh and his name is Boomhower, he does sound like he is mumbling a bit, but thats another story.

i like the thought of bringing up two pets at the same time but never did try and bring up two types and boosting their stats differently i usually go for the basic damage skills and if the pet seems to get damaged badly on health see what stats need the boost it will be interesting to see how you do with them

on one of my hunters i have the clutchmother and only a few levels with her but the walk/run amuses me and she seems to do reasonable damage and the look? of surprise from some other players has to be a bonus

i have not played with my be hunter for a while but was thinking of trying the dragonhawk out and trying to see if i can work out something with their castor abilities , it seems to me we hunters may be missing out on the ” joke ” with the castors , they do get improved spell damage i think ? and i was wondering if i boosted the spell damage that we hunters can use if it would make the dragonhawks fire damage more worth having , i have seen with my other hunters that + spell damage can boost the damage our shots do so . ho hum yet another aspect of hunters abilitys i have seen little said about

thanks to your ideas , as they are giving me so many different ideas to play on with my various alts

Got a tallstrider on a alt hunter too (think i have mentioned them before, no?), and i must say his stats are better than i espected. And its fun to run around with a pink emu. Here’s his stats; http://s223.photobucket.com/albums/dd78/MareeRawr/?action=view&current=WoWScrnShot_122607_201525.jpg Got the highest ranks of Great Stamina/Natural armor and the BM pet buff (i don’t remember the names.)
    -Peace

Alas, if only the Hyena did not have that god awful model glitch…I would have one, but I can’t stand watching my hyena suck it’s tail through it’s ass and i9nto it’s stomach any time it bites or lunges forward. ~_~ The beautiful skins and amusing sounds won over it’s lack of any special ability, but the new model glitch makes me cry.

….unless, they fixed it in 2.3…?

I just got a hyena on an alt, I’ve got one on my 70 hunter that I tamed back in ‘04, 6 days after launch. I love ‘em, the “Chirrr” when you send them to attack is awesome. And they’re solid tanks when you need them to be. Before hunters got pet skills, he tanked all the way up to Sunken Temple for me and my little group of guildies. And at 70 they’re huge!

Ohgawd, I’ve leveled two pets at once before patch like, 2.2.
Pain in the arse if you ask me, I stopped at 52. Heh.
I kept Bullet the wolf (Who has a post on this site O.o)
Then I got one of those new Ghost Wolves at level 67.
But still, leveling two pets is a big hassle… When you get passed level 40ish.
GL, I always LOVED tallstriders! ^-^

Hyenas have always been a favorite for me. Snort the Hackler is a good one to get, and of course the beautiful Scarlet tracking hounds!!!

Tallstriders are an interesting choice. I have seen very few hunters showing off there all-mighty Binky, the green chicken. You show them! Your over-master tallstrider will.. uh… stide..? over there cats!!
    Good choices! :)

My 46 hunter alt has ended up with a hyena pet. I wanted something unique (after seeing six people in one day with my ghost sabre, I stabled him permanently). Sahjak is the white/gray packhound found with the centaur in Southeastern Desolace. He was hell to tame solo, but he’s worth it. I love that insane warbling growl >.> As for levelling two pets at once…good luck! I tried and quit at 30-something. Someone was always behind. Tallstrider and hyena diets should give you some flexibility, too. Have fun :D

Well, I’ve been leveling 2 pets at once on my BE hunter (red lynx from BE land & owl from NE land) and while it can be a pain, they have actually been keeping up with me pretty darn well. Kaledain is now at lvl 31 & both his pets are 30 :)
