Boars as always rule at low levels. But ive found that as far as longevity goes you will be much happier with a raptor or a scorpid as a pet that can take you from lv1-70. Personally i like the scorpid for leveling. It will give you enough dps to use as a tank and does some decent dps with scorpid poison. Only con to the scorpid is the lack of dash later on and it still cant top the raptor the in dps.

For first pet, or rather, early pets, I've been doing catch and release; tame a pet, learn it's skill, abandon it, and go get something with a different skill. I keep my current favorite in the kennel, aka stable.

My level 13 orc has tamed the black and the molted piggies, (molted is in the kennel), and a red raptor. The raptor is more fun, looks cool, and does some good foe-rending damage; I'll probably keep him (her?), even though the pig is a solid performer. The pig is easier to feed, though. I'll get some scorpids tonight.

Why more than one? I think it is useful to have level one of a skill, even if the particular pet does not need it (has a higher level), especially for something as universally used as bite or claw; that way you can teach it to another pet sooner after you tame it. So tonight, I'll hunt Claw 1 as well as Claw 2.

Low level (pet not much higher than level 10) skill importance:

Bite is essential, since you can train most of the pets in Bite. Claw is second or third; of the few things that can't bit, most can claw; some pets can do both, so that's two attacks. Howl or Screech is the other one you really want to have, if your pet does it.

Pigs should have charge and gore, so if you are going to work with a pig, get these skills.

Scorpid Poison looks like it should be awesome. Pet class specific - so if you aren't going to use a scorpid, you don't need this.

Cower - forgo using it for now. At present, it is counterproductive. I want to learn it in case I want to train it latter.

Corrupted Mottled Boar is a great choice if you plan to use a <a href="http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/html/mobs/mob_rottingagamar.shtml" rel="nofollow">Rotting Agam'ar</a> later.

I did just start up a new hunter, and I did grab a boar from browsing my options on petopia. Charge is a wonderful skill for a pet until you can get dash, but the problem is the only way to upgrade charge and gore is to go to Redridge and tame a Great Goretusk (or go even further and tame a board in Loch Modan). The same thing applies to the next level in skills, go to Redridge once again, or wait a few more levels and go into RFK.

If you're a fan of keeping your pets abilities up to date, but not a big fan of going into the heart of enemy territory to do so, I really can't recommend a boar as a long term pet.

Love the little guide. Its extremely useful if you are just starting a hunter. Wish it had been around when I started out, had to learn through a lot of trial and error. I recomend a boar every time a new hunter asks for a good pet. They are great while learning the class, can hold aggro like a champ, and eat almost anything. Keep up the great work Mania!

And have a happy holiday everyone!

Ronorin: I added longevity as a pro for any pet that's generally considered pretty good at high levels, and as a con for those who are generally considered pretty bad. And I left it out for the others. That's as complex as I want to get with this level of guide. :> I think that the specifics -- for instance, the ordering you give to cats, boars, and raptors -- depend too much on your playstyle and activities to be useful in a simple guide like this.
