As part of the leveling changes in Patch 2.3, a number of elite creatures outside of dungeons are becoming non-elite. I want to make sure that Petopia has updated information on the elites that are changing, so I’ve been checking out all the elite beasts I can find outside of dungeons.

Birnam, a level 66 Night Elf hunter from Moonrunner (US), wrote this week to let me know that Windroc Hunters and Windroc Huntresses have apparently been removed from the live game. After spending a lot of time looking for these lovely owls in Nagrand and not finding them, Birman asked a GM who confirmed that they have been removed.

I imagine it might have been because both Hunters and Huntresses were heavily scripted — flying down to attack talbuks and such — but I had never heard that this caused problems with them as a pet. I’m also curious when this change happened — does anyone know offhand?

At any rate, losing the Windroc Hunter isn’t too terrible — Windrocs and Ravenous Windrocs are the same color and level, and between them have the two skills that the Hunters did. But I do regret losing the Windroc Huntress. The other two black owl choices near that level are both elite: the Windroc Matriarch and Gutripper.

I arrived home from my business trip yesterday evening … only to find that my home desktop had some sort of catastrophic HDD failure while I was gone. Good thing I bought a laptop, eh?

And thank you to everyone who let me know that Patch 2.3 is scheduled to go live next Tuesday. I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to do it, but I will do my best to have Petopia updated as quickly as I can after that.

I had intended to post this Monday but … time just got away with me. I’m currently in North Carolina as part of a short programming contract. I didn’t mention that I was going to be away for a few days because the money from the contract allowed me to finally pick up my own sweet little laptop and I figured with that I’d be able to stay on top of the news and post at least once a day, even if it was short.

I took a quick look today at how the experience changes on the PTR might affect our pets. I found absolutely no surprises:

• Pets still require 25% of the experience that a player would at the same level. Players now require less experience to level between levels 20 and 60, and so our pets also require less experience during those levels.
• Pets still do not get any share of the experience when their owner completes a quest. (I didn’t expect they would, but it was worth checking.)
• As on live, pets do not get experience when they kill something that is grey to the hunter.
• The experience that pets get per kill does not appear to have changed.
