Ghost Wolf!
The comment thread for the last Petopia update and my GMail inbox were both filled with reports of a new ghostly wolf in Dustwallow Marsh yesterday. I haven’t been able to get down there yet myself, but apparently this ghost wolf is summoned by one of the Grimtotems — but is not classed as an NPC’s pet and so you can start the process of taming it. The problem? It dies after just a handful of seconds regardless of damage, and since Tame Beast lasts 20 seconds you can’t finish taming it before it dies.
[UPDATE: As of 01/14/2008, Blizzard has announced that this creature can no longer be tamed. This reverses their previous comments on the matter.]
Resourceful hunters wracked their brains thinking of ways to shorten the length of time it takes to cast Tame Beast — so far as I know this is the first time we’ve had cause to consider that problem! And it looks like someone managed to do it — kimisawa just posted a comment with screenshots of another hunter who tamed the ghostly wolf!
My thanks to kimisawa, Mugungo, Ryno, Jakal, and everyone else who has been frantically trying to figure out how to tame this wolf. Now that we know it’s possible, I want to know more about exactly how it can be done!
Edit: Our own Mugungo from Dunemaul managed to tame one of these amazing wolves today and sent me a screenshot. Click the thumbnail for the full-sized pic.
He also sent a guide about how he tamed his wolf:
I thought I would post a small guide on how to get the awsome ghost wolf. First of all, I dont know how to do this as a non-troll, but what you should do, is get the meta gem Mystical Skyfire Diamond. Then, spam aspects ’til it procs. You will have to get lucky with the wolf spawns to time the spawns with the gems proc. Then use troll zerking (the shaman blood lust skill may stack with the gem, i am unsure) and then have a leather worker drop the drums. Then you must click on the wolves EXACTLY when they spawn, and hope your taming finishes!
Also, this wolf looks awsome with bestial wrath on. Attached screenys show it with BW and I also put a screeny that is a good representation of how clear the wolf looks. =D
Again, click the thumbs for the full pic:
In the comment thread below, Maera also gives a little guide that I wanted to pull up and repeat where it’s more visible:
I tamed my little wolf with the help of Mappy (70 shammy) and my Fiance. I also was toting the Skyfire Diamond and the Drums of Battle. Found one of the Grimtotems to harrass, demanding for the wolves to be summoned. Luwl. Dropped the drums once I had aggro from the Grimtotem, and started spamming trueshot aura to get the Diamond to proc. Once it did Mappy immediately threw down Heroism. Started the tame, and hello ghost wolf!
I strongly suggest making a macro to target one of the wolves the very moment they spawn. The seconds to complete the tame is so small a window, and every little piece of time you can scrounge is crucial.
The other thing that might make you panic is that your wolf may die the second after you finish the tame. My wolf fell over dead the moment the tame was complete, I think because the wolf was intended to die after only eight seconds or so after being spawned.
[UPDATE: As of 01/14/2008, Blizzard has announced that this creature can no longer be tamed. This reverses their previous comments on the matter.]

read the Post about the Hunter, using these googles but not shure how they work … may somebody explain this please …. should start skilling Engineering if that works
I think he used the googles just for the meta socket, with the gem that has a proc chance of reducing the cast time by half.
I’ll certainly try to do this – the pet is awesome!
This guy told me he used “Surestrike Goggles v2.0″ to reduce the taming to half, and I believe he also perform Troll’s zerking. I think “Mystical Skyfire Diamond” can does the same thing.
The key is to reduce the cast time to half, and plus troll zerking or blood lust or the battle drums.
My bad, should be Meta-Socket gem “Mystical Skyfire Diamond”, the guy just choosed the google as the gem socket.
update
This hunter spent more than 2 hours to tame this wolf, since the timing is very critical.
He use the diamond and zerking (he is a troll)
for other races, blood lust is needed.
BTW, anyone knows where this wolf spawns?
Nevermind, just found it on Wowhead.
http://www.wowhead.com/?npc=24133
I NEED MORE STABLE SLOTS FOR THESE THINGS!!
Now if I can just figure out how to do it without that meta gem… I am a troll, so that helps a bit.
Hmmmmmm….
So basically you need the Mystical Skyfire Diamond, Drums of Battle, the Shaman’s Bloodlust/Heroism and hope that the meta gem goes off before the wolves despawn?
I’d be crazy enough to try to do this but considering Blizzard has a habit of making cool pets untrainable and remove them, such as the bears from ZA, I’m not going to spend the time and money to get one no matter how awesome they look.
I wonder if the other ghost wolves in the game (SFK ones and the rare in Mulgore) have been flagged as tameable now? Such as the Wolves in Mulgore being able to bark like the one in SouthShore.
The ghost wolves in SFK are not tameable.
..and are, to clarify, still labeled undead. I have petitioned a GM ingame to explain if these beautiful creatures are going to be removed or not.
Guys, do you think it’s possible to tame them with just a blood lust buff and battle drums?
I’m a level 60 night elf…i’m not an engineer and i’m not rich either, so the only spell reduction would be buffs. do you think it’s possible?
After speaking with a GM, apparently it’s a reported glitch … and might be removed from the game. The GM I spoke with said she didn’t know if it was going to be kept tameable or removed in a future patch, but it /is/ currently an error.
Oi, you should not have done that. Now you brought dang attention to them. Good job. >:-P
update: taming tricks
1) To trigger the diamond’s effect, just simply switching between aspects.
2) You will need troll zerking, or blood lust from shaman or any other similar effects.
3) You need to tame the wolf right after it is spawned, otherwise you wont have enough time.
ps. Diamond has a hidden CD, around 45sec.
………way to go Liet…….
Hunter pets had been nerf a lot…why not keeping this like the ghost leopard????????
Hopefully they dont change this!
Just tested the spawn times for these.
The tauren is able to summon them every 20-25 seconds.
The wolves last for exactly 8 seconds and then die. If you kill them before they die they will drop loot.
The wolves are immune to pretty much anything…traps, scare beast…you name it.
Follow up, 8 seconds means you need at least 60% cast time reduction from the 20 seconds to cast Tame Beast.
Unfortunately for non-engineers, the meta-gem IS required.
To Derrick
I think the engineering goggle is just optional (sorry I didnt state clearly)
Just get any gear that has a meta-socket
The things required are the diamond and a haste buff.
re: kristy, said GM said -many- hunters already asked about this, so go blame someone else. >P I didn’t even get to ask my questions before I was told the answers.
Thanks kimisawa…
But it looks like all gear that can fit a meta socket is epic and for level 70s, meaning anyone under 70 would not be able to do it unless they’re a level 350 engineer. I could be wrong though, I’ve been trying to find a loop hole.
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=2969694787&sid=1
Additionally, someone else posted on the forums asking for a blue response /long/ before I got around to asking a GM. Jeez. Way to be appreciative of people going out of their way to find information for you. :P

[edit: On second thought, I'm just going to clean this up myself.] When something like this happens, lots of people are going to want to know what’s up — I sure did! Asking a GM is one possible place to get answers. So let’s leave it at that and move on.
I do not agree with you um… “Liet”.
Could you be a Troll(10% at full health), stack Blood Fury(30%) and the Drums(5.1%?) and still get away with it or is the gem a MUST? I want to get this on a new Hunter alt(36 atm) and I refuse to level another pet from the lower levels to 70 on my Hunter main. then again, if it’s a bug there might be no point…but I want the challenge! >:D
Well, I just tried [Magic Dust] but of course the wolf was immune to it. I was soooo hoping it would work :(
I tried this 20-30 times with the gem and LW drums.. I hit it about as good as I could, 5-6 times.. and it just seemed like I was still about 2-3 seconds short.
I dont think the spell haste from the drums is enough by itself.
to Derrick: first meta socket thing I got was in 69, as normal quest reward (Earthwarden’s Coif – reward from “The Warlord’s Hideout”. it was easier part. Being 350+LW I can make and use drums, so I dont have to be troll either. Now to invest 100ish g to gem and get my shammy friend and off we go. Dunno if its worth though – recent gem costed me another 130:(. Dratew
Finally, someone got it and it’s possible… hehe, may have to look into this myself and be the talk of the server. Thanks much people who found this info out!

Such a beautiful wolf though. I intend to level him to 70 and actually use him. If Blizzard will let me keep him, anyway ><

Bah. Pictures aren’t working! Doh! ><
Now I wish I was 70 so I could tame that.
Completly awsome that some one was able to get it though.

proof that none-troll hunters can tame ghost wolf is here, 2 org hunters had tamed them.
So, go and tame your ghostly wolf now, none-troll hunters!
I’ve added more screenshots from Mugungo plus the mini-guide that he sent me. And Maera, I pulled your comments together into the main post as a sort of mini-guide also. (I think I managed to fix the links to your pictures also, although I have no idea why they were behaving that way.)
If you want one of these, I would suggest hurrying — I doubt they are going to be around for very long.
So I want to make clear, because I have heard differently, that the shammy heroism will stack with the MSD. As a NElf I have a feeling this would be the only way to get it would be to use the drums, MSD and a Shammy’s heroism.
btw, to go with the above, I think it would be useful to get the JuJu flurry from the E’ko quest in Winterspring, that is an extra 30 spell haste – As a Nelf, looking again at Maera’s post, I thinking Shammy, JuJu, Drums and MSD will make it possible for me (and any non-troll) who have good timing.
Hmm…I look forward to confirmation that it can be done without being a troll. Also, to those that have captured it, does it exhibit any abnormal behavior like improper feeding or not attacking PVP/PVE targets (IE: Old serpents and the old quest ravager)?
Hope to hear about a non-Troll taming it soon before I make the investment. 8)
I’ve talked with several people about this pet. Besides calling me insane for working to get one and having to grind 40 levels with it, they’re all stating that Blizzard will scoop him up and steal him once they fix the glitch with taming him. S’rather upsetting, and I’m wondering if I should even take the time to really level the wolf. -_-

I’ve always felt that the vision quest wolf was the most unique visually (no pun) of all the critters. Now there IS one to tame, and the challange is high. I don’t have chars of a level to attempt it, sadly, but it’s well worth the efforts, in my opinion, even if bliz recants and takes it or changes the skin or just nerfs it in some horrid way.
alas for not being able to at least try. my highest is a dwarf hunter, and have no gems or anything like that. nothing mentioned, actually. my highest horde is a lvl 32 orc hunter. ::sigh::
what a fine pet. /me jealous of those that get it before the Bliz rampage takes it away.
shibumi the sad
Yah, managed to get the pet myself. Yes, a troll. Damn it was a good workout to get the fella, but well worth all the huzzle.
Well, the pet has one little flaw/merit, it doesnt really use running animation, usually only really fast walking. ^.^ Must say, its both blessing and curse, sometimes he’s cute as hell.
Ah yeah, funnily enough, my tale on the taming was quite much like the one Maera gave there. My wife helped with her lv70 shaman. Leatherworker and all.
GOOD TRICK TO TAME
Priest can use mind control to the mob to summon the wolf, so the timing will be much easier.
the spirit-shifter’s wolf summon has 5sec CD
go go Hunters!
In Taiwan, someone found out that the Pri can mind control the mob. Through this, the Pri can control the respawn timing of the Ghost wolf ( a 5 seconds CD spell). Funny thing is, although the mob is under controlled, the summoned wolf is still showed as an enemy and still can be tamed. This is the best way to tame the wolf.
I successfully tamed one and I’m an NE.
I used:
Drums of Battle
Juju Flurry
Mystical Skyfire Diamond in a Beast Lord’s Helm
and Heroism from a fellow guildy shaman who was leveling fishing between attempts @ taming.(sup Garidoxia).
It died about .5 seconds after tame but I was able to rez it. Oh and it has no running animation lol. Just walks really fast.

Your screen and interface look very clean and neat! Could you share what UI are you using? I love the center map, and the head icon thing…
Just got mine on Anub’Arak server.
Blood Elf (Misty) with a Shaman (Djunn) for bloodlust, Leatherworker (Kambei) for drums, and the Mystical Skyfire Diamond.
Would like to note it seems to die at 7 seconds, not 8. :3
Drums + Bloodlust + Diamond = 6.5 second cast time.
The wolf does have a strange running animation while running next to you, or not under the dash animation. However, he does gain loyalty, level, and gain training points like a pet should. He always will gain happiness when you feed him like other pets. Besides his funny walk, he is a functional pet.
He will set back and howl like other wolves, except no howl comes out. Poor thing. =(
And one last thing, the growl/snarl he makes when you send him in to attack is creepy! He sounds so very ghostly and eerie!
Used all the above tips, worked first time. Shaman and priest made this very easy, thanks for the help guys!

Thanks to Firestalker and Revelation for messing about helping me while I babbled like a madman on vent.
Can any proud owners perhaps post a video of their new pet, his odd (lack of) a run animation and attack sound?
I let a Grimtotem pummel away at me for awhile and watched him spawn wolves for awhile.
With a stopwatch I saw that each and every time the wolves die after 8 seconds, give or take a fraction of a second.
BTW guys, I have a strong feeling blizz will fix this…Araj the Summoner in western plaguelands spawns four wolves with the same skin…they are called Illusory Wraiths or something….but they are not “beasts”
I believe that Blizz will fix the grimtotem wolves so that they are the same as the Araj wolves.
Actually, this wolf has the same run animation as all the coyote models do. It just doesn’t switch all the way up to that “gear” when following along beside you, as he hasn’t scaled all the way up to his 70 size yet. If you use Eyes, it will do a full run animation.
A video of myself taming the beast:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_tLDiHRSlY
Enjoy.
Got all ready.
Hopefully will get it before/after tonight’s raid.
I must say that metagem trick will come handy for future elite/hard mob taming.
Why not just throw down a freezing trap? Or wont that work?
Immune to every CC.

I take it druids can’t hibernate the wolf either? I’m loving reading about all the taming efforts people are going to for this. Give the players a challenge and someone is always willing to try for it. I would love to see more of these pets around the place.
I was actually able to tame with with just 2 people.
I went to the area with my hunter and my friends shaman(I had 2 windows of wow open). An had a guildie priest come and help me out. I had him mind control the mob to and target me. Used blood lust on the Shaman, and then started spamming Trueshot aura (with skyfire diamond for the proc). I told the priest to wait until he see’s the buff from the gem, and as soon as he sees it to summon the wolf. I also used a macro (/target grimtotem spirit guide /cast tame beast) which I put on a hot key. Sure enough I got the wolf. It did scare me at first though cause he had died as soon as he was tamed.

Hi, I’m I able to do it at level 30, or sooner than 70?
I tamed this wolf just a moment ago using the metagem, beserking and the drums (after about 2 hours of bad timings). It doesn’t seem to have a run animation, it just moves its legs faster and faster which looks a bit wierd.
Worked for me as a Orc too, but I had to compensate for my bad latency with Flurry Juju in addition to the Bloodlust (no Leatherworker available for me, so no drums).
http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/8350/wowscrnshot112207124952ou8.jpg
Only had a priest helping me – a lot easier than depending on my own luck.
Archimonde’s first !
In Org
Got one today. :) Happy Thanksgiving to me!
Can confirm its doable with just the gem and shaman BL. Was a close one though =)died a millisecond after it was tamed. Very nice animal!
I tamed it today without help of any priest, shaman, leatherworker or additional buffs other than berserking and the skyfire diamond. I just wanted to remind others that it is possible even without an army, it just takes a bit of practice and a ton of luck. :)

Got it 2nd try. Priest, shammy, LW and gem.
http://paxymus.googlepages.com/wolf6.jpg
Just got mine….named him MyBoyBlue. I kept failing until I finally found a Druid with Drums of Battle to help. Tamed him then he died. Rezzed and he was mine!! Love him! =D
Just wanted to chime in. Orc hunter here. Tried 4 times with just MSD and Bloodlust and failed (split second off). Added the drums to the mix and got him first try.
Just got mine tonight on Dragonmaw. Did it solo, no shaman or priest. Used the drums, berzerking, and the meta gem to make it happen. Definitely was not easy, but it was rewarding to finally tame him. I really hope that even if Blizz makes them untameable, they will allow the ones that have already been tamed to keep their skin. After all the money and work I put into this, I’ll be pretty upset when/if the nerf comes.
Just got mine today. I am a nelf, so yes it is possible. Second try with drums/shammie/spriest. Not too hard, not too easy..
does a lvl 30 alliance char has any chance of tamming this pet? with drums, shammi, priest assisting?
GOT ONE ! Finally
[quote]does a lvl 30 alliance char has any chance of tamming this pet? with drums, shammi, priest assisting?[/quote]
No, you need the meta gem.
This is easiest with a priest to Mind Control and a Shaman to Bloodlust/Heroism. Make sure they’re patient friends. :)
Macro:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/stopmacro [target=target,noexists]
/cast Berserking
/stopcasting
/cast Tame Beast
Or:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/stopmacro [target=target,noexists]
/use Drums of Battle
/cast Tame Beast
You could also possibly use Abacus of Violent Odds. Just make sure there aren’t any Grimtotem Spirit Guide corpses lying around that you might end up targeting instead.
to Xaraphyne you want to be berserking and using drums BEFORE you have target and cast macro…
if you use the drums and berserk after you might not have time to target and cast before your gem proc goes away due to global cooldown.
Neither the drums nor Berserking sets off the global cooldown. The top macro is the one I used to get my ghost wolfie. :) Dunno about the Abacus though.
The drums did the trick for me. (NE)
Tried several times with gem, shaman and priest only – but always missed it with 0,5 to 2 seconds.
I had heroism when i started spamming aspects already indeed. Shouldnt be a prob to proc in that time :)
Btw, let the shaman shock the wolf that isnt getting tamed. You dont want to get interrupted by that one.
Tough to get, especially if you aren’t a troll, but well worth it in my opinion. I love the guy, even if he prefers to walk everywhere =P
I had a priest MC, a shaman use bloodlust, and another hunter who was a leatherworker use the drums. I just switched aspects until my meta gem proc’d, the priest summoned the wolves, and I used a taming macro. 8 seconds later he was mine =)
3rd hunter on Archimonde to get the wolf. Choobie and Vizmund beat me too it xD
Wolf 1
Wolf 2
Wolf 3
I’m a night elf, got mine tonight. I think the first on Vek’nilash. Several have tried and failed that I know of. Don’t know of any that succeeded and haven’t seen any on either faction. I used a priest to MC the mob, Shammy with heroism, drums of battle, MSD and a juju flurry. Got it on first try and had a second to spare. Had priest use MC once the mob was in her control, drums and heroism were popped as I started switching aspects back and forth. Gem proc’d on 5th switch, wolf was summoned and I hit my macro:
/use Juju flurry
/Tar Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast tame beast
It died a sec after taming but rezzed it and good to go. The fast walk instead of run animation is kind of funny, though I noticed it runs like a “normal” wolf when I use aspect of the pack and eyes of the beast. It is not a troll only pet, though being one would make it easier to tame I have no doubt.
I have also posted on the Blizz suggestion forum asking the developers to please leave it alone and let us keep them since I fear it may go the way of the Death Ravager – rally around the forum post and ask the Devs. to leave it be. this makes me think was the one from mulgore at a lvl 6ish quest ever tried?
Its hard to be optimistic when Blizzard has a habit of taking away pets that don’t fit properly into their system. Personally, I would love to see their damage when summoned be lessened, but have their summon time increased to 25 seconds or so. DON’T HIT ME!! I know that means you went through a lot of trouble for a pet that’d become common, but not everyone has access to everything needed to tame one, and I think it’d be a shame to rob a hunter of such a gorgeous pet because they just don’t have the time to spare. Also, last I checked tame pet can’t be knocked back or anything. It can be interupted with standard spell interupt mechanics, stuns, knockdowns or the like, but a standard, none slowed casting speed tame will always take twenty seconds, no matter whats trying to eat your face.
well, i got mine yesterday. had a priest MC it, then i popped my drums, shamans bloodlust and priest waited for me to get my buff, and i started spamming my target/cast macro and i got it.
heres hoping the link works for it, think you need myspace, but im too lazy to make a profile for some other free picture upload thing. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=146180920&albumID=0&imageID=14015309
Confirmed this works perfectly. Tamed yesterday. Very hard cause you need to have a good timing between the proc of the meta gem, the drums, the bloodlust and the apparition of these wolves. Take me 3hours and half to do this ^^
Got one last night on my Night Elf hunter along with another night elf hunter who was there, Priest/Mindcontrol, Shaman/Heroism, Drums of Battle, Juju Flurry, took one try for my me and my guildies helping.

To Palladiamorsdeus:
No they should keep it hard to tame, that’s what makes it so alluring. I dont want it to be like the ghost saber where theres 9 million of them running around. No matter how unique a pet is, if everyone and their brother has it, it’s still just a regular old pet.
You want it, you work for it! :P Get your butt to 70 and put the time and gold required into it if you really want it. Otherwise theres lots of easy to tame, but unique looking pets out there to choose from already!
I am trying hard to level my hunter, but I doubt I will be 70 before they take this out.
So there is no way to get this pre-70? I think that the Drums and Bloodlust will give me +35% to casting, is that still not enough? (I think that would make my 20 second cast into about 7 seconds)
Email or comment me back. (Bowsermaster12@gmail.com)
~Zuty
I got it on Destromath … I am a Troll, I got myself to 5% health, berzerked, a friendly priest then MC’d the npc and I began to cast aspect of monkey over and over, Diamond procs, and then used macro: Macro:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/stopmacro [target=target,noexists]
/stopcasting
/cast Tame Beast
* o ya .. priest gave me a shield too ..
Thieves
@Zuty
That would give you something like a 13 second cast time I believe.
And yes, the diamond is the only completely necessary item in everyones tames. The rest depends on if you’re a troll or not. :D
Got mine… much harder than described. I had (estimated) less than 7 seconds.
had a priest do mind control, shaman do blood lust and did Berzerk and used gem. Let the mobs beat me down to about 5% health before starting to get 30% cast speed increase. even then it was very tough… used this macro:
/target grimtotem spirit guide
/castsequence reset=15 [target=target,exists] berserking, tame beast
priest did MC, I messed with True shot till Gem proc, shaman waited for proc and cast blood lust, priest waited for blood lust then summoned wolves, I just spammed macro.
Keeping this wolf hard to tame is a good thing to motivate hunters to level up (which is good for Blizzard, makes more money?). I hope in the future, more of this kind of unique pets will present but require different conditions to tame (even though we got nerf all the time, we can still get some funs out of the game…lol)..
Go Pokimon hunters! Collecting pets are fun! We want more stables! (like 10)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v322/Path/ghostwolf2.jpg
Got one on Cenarion Circle, 2:37 server time, alliance night elf. Guessing its the first one there, have yet to hear or see anything else about it.
I used the Mystical Skyfire Diamond, the Flurry Juju, and a shaman’s Heroism for the cast speed, and a priest for the mind control.
I made a macro that /cast Aspect of the hawk (rank 1). I also made a macro to /use Flurry Juju /target Grimtotem Spirit Guide /cast Tame Beast.
To time it correctly, I had the priest cast MC and the shaman use heroism (bloodlust) immediately, at the start. I then spammed my aspect macro with the Meta gem hat on. Once focus proced, I yelled on vent to summon the ghost hounds, and I spammed (yes SPAMMED) that tame macro. I ended up taming them RIGHT as they died. It was milliseconds close. I can’t stress enough how the juju saved that attempt.
It took me 5 attempts over 40 minutes, but it worked. Unless you are an engineer, it will be SO close. And watch out for the spirit shifters breaking MC, they actually broke MC during my successful attempt, but the priest managed to re-MC and summon them right when I procced focus.
Thanks to Baelor and Icaforta!
Finally got it with alot of help from friends. Has anyone confirmed what skills they can learn? Same as the regular wolf class?
This is a nice lil find. Ever since the vision quest and I saw that wolf I knew then, some day… some day I will have a pet like that. That day has came, I got mine a few hours ago. Thanks to everyone for the great taming tips. Meta gem, JuJu Flurry, Drums of Battle, Bloodlust… tamed!
Lil tip, I’ve never had a wolf before so I don’t have any howls 1-4. So make sure you either have a free spot in the stable for a training pet or you already know the wolf skills before attempting to tame this beautiful beast.
Tauren on Wildhammer
@yakoosa
Yeah they’re just the same as any other wolf as far as skills and stats.
Mine knows furious howl, dash, bite, and growl, as well as cobra reflexes and avoidance. That’s pretty much all you can teach any wolf aside from the obligitory stamina and armor training, which I’m going to train once he hits 70.
He’s up to 61 now by the way:P
Got it tonight for a guild hunter. we ran with 4 total (Hunter, Shaman, Priest and Rogue). The Priest mind controlled the Grimtotem Spirit-Shifter, and gave a 2-count (after the hunter’s Mystical Skyfire Diamond meta proc) on Ventrilo before summoning the Grimtotem Spirit Guides. This gave the hunter (dwarf) enough time to use a [Juju Flurry], have Heroism cast by the shaman, and Drums of Battle used by the rogue. After the hunter used his Juju Flurry, he just started spamming his macro.
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast tame beast
For the record, I was the first to tame this on Twisting Nether (Nov 21 2007, ~6:30 pm) and have the screenshots to prove it, unless someone else can provide SS’s of an earlier taming. I’m pretty sure Xaraphyne was the second.
Screenshots: note the time in the upper right hand corner.

I probably shouldn’t be posting this here, but I’m a little wary of posting it on the official forums (don’t want them to snatch away our existing pets when (most likely) they hotfix them to be untameable).
i tamed this pet the day after the patch came out, not realy that hard. i had 2 shama’s, one wiht the drums and one with the gem. after about 15 mins of trying to pop everything at the same time i got it.
Kind of late to the party, but! Helped a hunter friend get one of these tonight (hah, like I’m wasting a stable slot on a WOLF….); I got to play the priest, we brought in a shaman for Bloodlust, etc etc. Only real deviation from the standard drums-meta proc-bloodlust-spawn wolves we had was that the hunter spammed a slightly modified CC macro that read:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/clearfocus [target=focus,dead][button:2]
/cast [target=focus]Tame Beast
First line targets the nearest wolf (big help not to be standing on the corpses of old attempts); second line sets the focus to the wolf if you don’t already have a focus (this is why you can spam it); third line clears the focus if your current wolf dies or you right-click; fourth line casts Tame Beast on the focused wolf. Simple, but helpful for us.
PS: go laugh at Karonis if you stop by Earthen Ring… sucker has to go discover the joys of an underleveled pet now. ;)
PPS: whoever is first responsible for devising how to tame these suckers (I don’t need a name)… let me bear your children.
How would being an engineer help? I’m an engineer and will take any extra precautions I can when I try to tame him in the next few days.
This is disappointing that you HAVE to be lvl 70 to even consider taming this wolf. Its a nice rare pet to have, but that just blows. Ah well, back to the grindstone gotta get 20+ lvls under my belt to even think about this one (though with having to grind him from lvl 30 to 70 I may just pass….).
Safe journeys,
Sétanta, 46 lvl Hunter on Fenris
No, at level 66 you can get helms with meta sockets through quests or otherwise.
I would say level 66 is the minimum.
I tamed this bad boy today on Muradin at 11:05 PST. They are changing the leveling system of pets too, so this won’t be too bad leveling up. I got this with the help of a 70 shaman, a fellow Hunter who had Drums of Battle, and a Priest for Mind control.
MAJOR THANKS TO KENISFIS, ZEPHIR AND SHAZZAMM!!! I love ya!!
I made a macro to target the wolf and immediatly begin tame beast. Our method (which worked after 4 tries) was having the priest MC the mob, then the instant they saw my metagem proc, summon and I instantly hit my macro the second I saw the tauren move its hands. Hunter threw down drums, Shaman slammed Heroism, and viola. I got me a wolf. Wolf died right as it tamed, so it was worrisome until we heard the lovel “ding” of a new pet becoming tamed.
Good luck to all those attempting this. it’s insanely fun to try, if a bit maddening.
Tamed second try on a NE hunter with just a shaman’s heroism, MCed mob to time the summons, and the skyfire gem proc. Had juju flurry ready but forgot to get the cache out of the bank. Wolf died literally as the cast finished, was that close, but it’s mine now at least for a while… :-)
Tamed first try with priest and shaman. Bloodlust, spam TSA, priest summons on proc, then spam your macro and your done. Drums prolly help if your laggy, but easily done as non-troll with a shaman and macro quickness.
Couldn’t do it with just bloodlust due to lag or whatever, came back tonight with juju and it made the difference first try :)
Thank you so much for posting this as i’ve just tamed the wolf myself. Took abit of practice but its definetly doable. The way i did it was keybind 1 to Drums of Battle, 2 to Target the wolf and 3 to Tame beast. Then given the strict orders of
1. Mind Control Summoner
2. Push 1 for drums of battle
3. Keep changing aspects until proc kicks in
3. Shammy casts Heroism and priest summons dogs
4. Push 2 for targetting and instantly push 3
The dog died just as i tamed it and just required a ressurection to bring back to life.
Another interesting note about these little guys are their cute running animation lol. What’s also interesting is when you logout before you name it. Mine went from ‘Wolf” to “Unknown”. But I have since named him Kiba though.

For some reason my comment link goes to thottbot. If you want to see, copy paste I guess lol
Trained on Bonechewer server at 11:50 PST on Nov 25, 2007. Better late than never!
Drums of Battle, Heroism, and Priest Mind Control. Took 3 tries but the drums of battle were needed to overcome the lag.
So far I have not seen another one yet on Bonechewer.
Trained mine on Rexxar server 7:30pst on Nov 25, 2007. Was worth every min.
used priest for mind control, drums of battle, mystical diamond, and Heriosm from shammy.
I have yet to see another alliance hunter with this pet on the server. Everyone stops and looks and has so many questions.
Really exciting to be the only hunter on the alliance with the Ghost Wolf.
Have noticed a couple of things:
1. while in slave pens leveling the wolf leveled after killing one mob and then leveled again after killing the very next mob. Seems as though he is leveling faster than my other pets have.
2. Also noticed that with basic party buffs his shadow resistance was at 98 and the others were at 20. not sure why this happened.
Good luck to all you hunters out there.
p.s. i have one question, did that cat that was in skettis mountains that was removed from the game get taken away from the hunters that had already tamed him?
What might Blizz do to these unique pets?
In regard to Toureg’s question about the cat from Skettis mountains that was removed, Blizz did NOT take it away from the hunters that had already tamed him. I had tamed him, and still had him after they removed him from the game. Unfortunately, he was the one I dismissed to make room for my Ghost Wolf, which I now have (as of yesterday) and love SOOO much. ^_^
To Toureg
Also the same thing with those who tamed Torgos. Friend tamed the bird 4 days after launch of BC. He still uses it to this day.
I dont think Blizz actually takes pets away from the hunters if they have them already, since it would be like taking possibly their only pet (I know alot of hunters who stayed with the same pet for all 60 levels of 10-70). The only problem we (those who have the wolf) will lost out on is the possibility of getting the run animation fixed for the wolf lol
Ok, I got this wolf as an orc. Like the site says, Skyfire + Blood lust + Drums. A macro helps too.
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast Tame
A preist helped me too. Gem proc’d and I spamed macro when he summoned wolves. Hehe.
Anyone else having a trouble training this wolf? Mines gaining no points despite loyalty and levels
Dont panic i noticed the same thing with my Wolf and expected him to start changing loyalty levels. It took about 3-4 levels before he moved up at all. He is now at level 40 and is only at loyalty level 4.
He will start to level so dont worry.
Toureg:
Thanks for the advice, glad to hear it. I didn’t bother with reporting a bug since well I wasn’t sure if it was a bug or just a huge level gap difference lol. Thanks again
Priest mind control, shaman heroism, drums of battle, juju flurry, & mystical skyfire diamond. 8 tries and almost an hour later we got it just right! It tamed & died almost at the same time! I spent the next 3hrs leveling it from 30-38 & lvl 3 friendly. I love it! I spent 159 gold just for the meta gem & farmed a couple of hours for the juju flurry but it was well worth it!
Tamed on the 25th on Thunderlord. This guy is really cool. He got an unoriginal name but I’m not real concerned about it. Was able to do it with just a Shaman and a Priest and the MSD proc. Hope they let us keep them.
Well I was overly excited when I heard about this pet, so much that I was inspired to level from 48 – 62 within 3.5 days, not talking played time. I gathered a group once at 60, only to see I couldn’t get bloodlust, which obviously ended in failure, and again at 62, with bloodlust, drums, juju flurry, and full berserking, only to be around .5 seconds off. So hopefully tomorrow, when they add S3 and probably a patch, they won’t take away this beautiful pet, and I will be able to get it in the future, but for now grats those of you who tamed it, my wolf is in the hands of blizzard now.
managed to get mine for my troll.two tauren with me tryed but the timeing just wouldnt play nice.hopefully they can try again once servers are back up.its buffable by priests and the run animation works fine when useing eyes of the beast.i had no trouble with bestial wrath or kill command.but i havent tryed intimidate or any pvp yet.they look downright psychotic on the log in screen to…theyres also the abicuse of violent odds and a “haste potion” if people are looking for other things they can use…i love how the forums are mostly positive about us tameing these to…
WHAT THE @*(& Why do people always report things like this… STFU and just play instead of reporting every little thing that a class may get enjoyment from.
I tamed this guy two nights ago, on Kirn Tor with the aide of a priest, shaman, and wee rogue (he had to bang on the drum, as my hunter isn’t a leather worker)I was 67 at the time sporting the SV quest reward, I helped clear the instance with my 70 and guild mates agreed to summon my hunter when we got to the final boss (I got my set shoulders to!) The end boss took a lot longer than normal to kill with me there (I was 66 at the time; dinged on the quest)- so if you’re 66 you’ll need to find a really solid group but it is possible.
I tried during the day about 4 times, but our priest was having lag issues and was unable to spawn the dogs in sync with my meta gem proc. I tried again that night and after about 3 tries (Shaman got aggro when casting his buff the first time, priest missed the meta proc, and the last time he was ours!) He died at almost the same instant the tame went off, and everyone in the group got rather flustered, thinking we were going to have to wait 10 more minutes. He’s name is now Hollow, he’s 45 and considers me his Best Friend. If you’re worried about him not gaining loyalties correctly, its pretty typical for low level pets to ding a few times before liking you from the other low level pets I’ve worked with.
I tamed my ghost wolf on the 26th…i had the meta…a preist for MC…a shammy for heroism…an a 350 leatherworker for the use of the drums of battle…what i did ….we MC the grim totem…jump aspects till meta procs…as soon as it does…priest summon wolves…shammy pops heroism…leatherworker uses the drums as i tab to wolf an start the taming process..very diffucult, so worth it…
I found out about this ghostly wolf yesterday. I wish I could tame it on my level 44 Hunter. I guess I’ll have to wait until 70 to tame it if Blizzard doesn’t nerf them and make them untameable. It’d be neat to have this as an unwritten epic pet Hunter quest.
Tamed this pretty pretty wolf a few days ago, already have him up to level 44 and Best Friend. I’ve been keeping a close eye on the hunter forums, hoping to catch news that we hunters will be allowed to keep such gorgeous beasts. Until then, much love to Not Dead Yet members for still taking me along in instances with an underleveled pet (heroics too!).
Still tamable after maitenence today~
Tamed this lil guy last night on Frostmourne on my Troll hunter. Had a priest MC the Spirit mob, make sure we were in an area with no other dead wolves (to avoid selecting dead ones). Another hunter started the LW Drums, I repeated Trueshot to proc the Metagem, as soon as it proc’d the priest summoned the wolves, and I used a macro to start Berserking, JuJu, target the wolf, and start taming. Tried it quite a few times before finally getting it. Prob 1-2 hours was needed all up. Make sure you take some low level food too.
Now I only hope blizz allows us to keep him, and I can be bothered to lvl him hehe.
I am getting mine tomorow, iff it is still possible…
Hoping i can make it on my own else i will get some people from the guild to help.
I am a Troll and leatherworker and have the Meta Gem….
Only problem for me… I DONT HAVE E META GEM HEADPIECE…
i dont do much pvp. And am 70 for a long time now.
I dont have any Meta Gem headpieces anymore (sold them all)
Iff you also did that you have 2 choices….
Go and pvp a lot till your honor is about 16000…
Or go and run lots of Shadow Labs and stuff to get Spirit Shards… You need 18 to get a headpiece..
Im one SL run away from my headpiece…
So i really hope it will still work tomorow…
Go and
Just tamed mine yesterday. I used a shammy (bloodlust), Priest (mind control), LW (drums), plus Juju Flurry and the Mystical Skyfire Diamond. I love playing Candid Camera with it in Orgrimmar ;D
I’m Arathor’s 2nd :)
So far i still remain the only alliance hunter to have tamed this wolf on Rexxar, as far as i know. I tamed him on Saturday Nov. 24th at 7:30pm. The number of people who have come up and commented on the Ghost Wolf is awesome. I have shared with them the the process i used and the items that are needed. I hope to see some more on our server soon. It would be fun to compare the adventure with someone else on Rexxar.
Note: he is now level 52 and have noticed that the buff from priests for shadow protection give the wolf 98 shadow resistance. I think this is a little higher than normal for that buff.
Note: I named my wolf —— Casper
lol
Go get him Hunters
Is the Skyfire Diamond a must-have? I really want this pet – I have the only other translucent pet, Ghost Saber – but I won’t be able to use the Skyfire Diamond for a while (being lvl 46 Troll). Is there anything that can substitute this?
Please let me know!
Diamond is a must, the proc cuts Tame into a 10 second cast then the % effects make this into about 7 seconds. I did my math wrong last time, after helping two hunters get this I am sure that you NEED this gem.
~Zuty
YES!….finally got one today after a lot of pain and effort and bad luck with procs….in the end it was myself, my girlfriend on her leatherworking druid and on her nephews shammy on a different PC, and another guildie on his shammy, i used the mystical skyfire diamond, Beserking (on about 10% hp to be sure), Drums of battle bloodlust and many many attempts…but i now finally have this awesome wolf <3 i’ve levelled him to 43 already just using mobs at about 62-64 in zanga…wasnt too tricky tbh
its officially the most effort ive ever made to get a pet, in that i farmed the mats for 2 skyfire diamonds..the mystical and a swift to put my beast lord helm back to how it should be =P that and all the other things make it a lot of work….but im so glad i have him…he does officially look awesome ..especially with BW on ^^ so good luck to all out there trying for him…i hope u get him soon =) if ud like to see him before u decide if its worth it im Kirjava on Dreanor server =)
PS Blizz have already made it so he cant learn a thing to try and deter people is i suppose their intention….stuff it tho im keeping this one =D
GL all
Kirjava
does it still die after 10 seconds if you sleep it or fear it?
bah….PPS ive just remembered that i meant to comment on something else…. he has a strange…well…”bug” in that he doesnt often run….especially when going to a mob he often runs then walks the last bit ^.^ its unusual but i have to say i like it…its more like a wolf’s normal “lope” anyway =D
¬.¬ ok now im asking a question having read through more posts…. has anyone after the S3 arena gear been able to teach theirs anything? as ive seen people prior to today were able to …. but i cant >.< im hoping that either i will be able to somehow or that at the very least im not the only one to have found this =S
ok…. now i really….really am sorry for this…..this is now my 4th post im aware so again…sorry….but ive just discovered (MUCH to my happiness) that i CAN teach my awesome wolf moves…for some reason my addon “beastmaster” didnt want me to, but i remembered it had screwed me before so turned it off and presto =D so this is Kirjava Dreanor server reporting that as of the 29th of November he CAN learn moves, in which case all thats “wrong” with it is the dodgy running…but as i said earlier…its a wolf’s lope..so im fine with that =)
sorry again for the maaany posts ..and good luck to anyone getting it ^^
many thanks to Silfesni and my wonderful other half Raventao for helping me with this =D
After only 2 days of farming mobs in Hellfire & a couple of 5 man’s I’ve gotten mine to lvl 57 now! I hope to take him into Kara this weekend! I love the whispers I get asking about him. I’ve yet to see another one on Argent Dawn.
Got mine up to 61 now and have taught it furious howl and im pretty sure he will learn bite (rank 9) at 64, i hope im first to get him to 70. Paperboy- Blood Elf- Deathwing
Oh ya he alos was able to learn dash so yes he can learn moves
Have to say thanks to everyone here your comments helped a lot. i went out tonight with a shammy a Priest a couple others were there to watch my lvl 44 hunter friend wants one so he had to come out and watch us try and after messing around we nailed it on the first try used the gem had heroism thats all folks i had the drums but the guy who could use them never logged on just like a lot of other people here the tame and death happened same moment rezed and named it badwolf from doctor who season 1
all the guys who came out were bummed it was the purple and red but once tame it goes to the silver and blue color already got 2 lvls to 32 tonight was in stormwind and people were going crazy first one i have seen on bleeding halo
i really feel this was something exciting hope they do maybe a few more in the future but i am not sure how they can top it with the death and tame going off same time it is a fast 8 secs. i will try to get screen shots that i took after i tamed i was so stunned to get first try i forgot to take a shot of the taming but hey those are the breaks
Capt jack
Got mine last night on my own after 4 tries… It really really is a great pet..
Now for leveling it and hope the stats on him are bit nice when he hits 70…

GREAT NEWS
GREAT NEWS:
Blizzard has stated we get to keep them and they will not be changing them. from the Euro forums:
Hi Fierce,
While this feature of the Grimtotem Spirit Guide wasn’t exactly intended, it was agreed by the development team that this is a fun use of in-game mechanics, and we therefore have no plans to address this issue – it will still be possible in future for everyone who wishes to tame this NPC to do so. :)
I hope this alleviates your concerns!
Issuntril
this is very encouraging. I guess I’ll be getting a dog now :) just need to gather the requisite bits and pieces – kin make the drums, but don’t have anything else, much less a priest and shammy. we’ll see.
very nice news Issuntril, thanks

You forgot the link Alanonymous. =P

This is an awesome news! I tamed mine last Monday night, and I saw first hand why people said it was a blast to do. Getting to hang out with friends and learning the timing right for the tame was really refreshing, unlike the usual “go there and camp x hours” and “go there and tame it” ways we normally do it.
The amount of positive comments and reactions I’ve been getting from the wolf while in towns is astounding. I’ve gotten a few whispers before while using unusual pets like the Warp Stalker or Nether Ray, but this one just blow them all out of the way. =D
i have a lvl 34 troll hunter alt, and i tryed it yesturday using 30% haste berzerking / war drums / bloodlust… only to find out that bloodlust doesnt effect lowbies
what lvl can you benefit from bloodlust? and is there any other way to get it at my lvl?
cuz i may sound crazy, but i swear i saw a low lvl tauren hunter running around with one… not even lvl 60
how is that possible?
I don’t think it’s even remotely possible without the meta gem to cut the casttime in half for starters, so I would guess you didn’t see a low lvl Tauren running around with it…
thats what i was thinkin… how could a lowbie tauren get one? im gonna hope to run into him again and check his lvl
anyway, does anyone know what lvl you need to be to get effected by bloodlust?
is there anyway to get this pet as a lvl 34 troll hunter?
I did get my yesterday
Did use help by:
Priest – mindcontrol and drop totem (Priest can mindcontrol for 1 min)
Shaman – use bloodlust (30% cast speed. Last 40 sec)
Leatherworker – use Drums of Battle (Increases casting speed rating 80 (5.1%). Lasts 30 sec.)
Gem – Mystical Skyfire Diamond (spell cast in half time) (last for 6 sec after it proc, thats why priest have to summon fast.
The Tricky party is to time everything. The gem procs very easy (usally 1-10 aspect changes). What i did was start with priest start mc, then leatherworker and shammy cast bloodlust/Drums of Battle. Then i have 25 sec to get my gem to proc since i needed the pet being summoned before Drums of Battle runs out.
Then i spam my macro:
/cast aspect of cheatah
/cast aspect of pack
when trinket proccs my priest see it on emote and he have macro:
/y Casting Wolves summon
/cast Copy of Summon Dire Wolf
and when i see the yell i press my macro ONCE:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast Tame Beast
Important to only press once, otherwise u will start cast and change target and mess up the timing.
The cast time for Tame beast is usuall 20 sec, u can get it down to 7.9 sec The wolves die after 8 sec so u have 0.1 sec fault tolerance.
1. MC
2. Bloodlust/Drums of battle
3. Spam aspect change macro
4. When gem procc Priest use summon macro
5. When you see the yell from priest press Tame beast macro ONCE
6. Be happy! or if it fail and try agan after 10 minutes bloodlust cooldown.
2 shamans will help u alot since then u can have 1 bloodlust every 5 min then and do it alot faster. U will prolly dont make it at first try. It took me allmost 2 hours.
Hope this help u to get this imba pet.

managed to get my woof a few nights ago.got him to level 41 so far.took about 3 and a half levels befor he got loyalty.guildies got hers to.someone mentioned that the drums stack but we didnt confirm it.
also.iv noticed another odd beast thing.the dire ravens in blades edge mountains say theyre not tameable.but they list a meat/fish diet in beast lore.the tamed birds the nearby grishna falconwing have as pets list a meat diet to.anyone tryed tameing those? i was thinking of trying later to see what happens…
and thankyou blizz for letting us keep our wolves…
For whoever was asking about bloodlust I was only able to get it at 62, but it might have been an accident, though even with full berserking, juju flurry, bloodlust, and drums of battle, you can’t do it. The gem is required.
I wish they made it a little more easy to tame those wolf’s.. I been tryin on my server but no Shamans ever want to help and its had for us low lvls to get the money for some the the items on top of that most of the items are lvl 70 req to use so .. make it a little easy for us next patch … just happy there stayin
70 nelf hunter. Got mine Thanksgiving morning. First on Gorefiend I do believe.
Tamedx mine earlier today with the help of the guild [mispelt i know]. Third known tame in Garona. First was a Horde, then an unknown alliance. Am I the only female dwarf hunter with this pet. :o
Reposting some info in case you don’t feel like scrolling:
1. You NEED Mystical Skyfire Diamond!
2. Durms of Battle.
3. Heroism / Bloodlust.
4. Bracers of nimble thought / Mantle of nimble thought (or epic gear w/ spell haste from G’eras, really depends on how far you’re willing to go to get this wolf).
5. Juju Flurry (from Witch Doctor Mau’ari in Everlook (Winterspring), requires you to do 3 quests first and you MUST have the Cache of Mau’ari to use the Juju Flurry).
6. Marcos are your friends!
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/stopmacro [target=target,noexists]
/stopcasting
/use Juju Flurry
/cast Tame Beast
7. Don’t forget the 70 Priest! Mind controlling this mob will help greatly, since otherwise you couldn’t control when the wolves are summoned, and the Mystical Skyfire Diamond proc only lasts 5 seconds.
8. I reccomend bringing someone (anyone) who can heal, just so you can keep agro off yourself while taming (meaning, them spamming heals).
Finally, the Ghost Wolf will always be tameable! So, no need to rush!

I would ike to know if anyone has yet to find a way for someone (lvl37) to tame this wolf, I found out about it right after the patch and really want to get it, I dont have much gold, but have tried several times to get it and failed, i get bout half to 3/4 of the way tamed and it dies. Im on Azjol-Nerub server anyone caught on yet on this server? If so message me, my character name is Fireandice as well, Thank you very much. (I really dont want to have to wait 30 lvls to get this pet)
What’s with everyone who keeps asking how they can tame this in their 30′s?
You HAVE to have the Meta Gem!! No ifs ands or buts about it!
A couple of things to keep in mind when trying to tame this.
Yeah, you have to be high enough level (66+) to slot a metagem. Presently, metagems only fit in head gear.
Secondly, something that was a painful lesson for me last night: the metagem requires you have more blue gems than yellow gems. What that really means is that you need to at least have two blue gems and one yellow gem or any combination where you do have at least one yellow gem and the blue ones outnumber the yellow.
I tried it with only the metagem slotted and the gem wouldn’t proc at times for seven minutes worth of attempts. Once I got a gem into the slot and a pair of boots that I could slot with two gems, (one yellow in the helm and two blue in the boots), I noticed the gem procced seven times on the first attempt and then again on my fifth attempt a few minutes later.
I’ll be trying again with my friendly neighborhood shaman, priest, and a helpful leatherworker tonight!
there are many pieces of armor on the shatari faction merchant that require the badges from heroic dungeons that will increase spell haste. Unfortunately they are not suited for hunters so much. So if you want to waiste your badges for this pet. Do it.
Hello
I have the Meta Helm, the Meta Gem, the Priest and the Shaman. I am an Orc hunter. Do I absolutely need the drums? Also, what is Juju Flurry and what does it do?
By my calculations The gem proc and Bloodlust will make my 20 second cast time 7 seconds. Isn’t that enough to tame it?
Help :) I can’t wait!
I just tamed this bad wolf after roughly an hour of failure, i ended up having to get a priest to MC and a shammy to BL and the meta gem from hell. 162g for a pet? hell yes. know why? its not really a beast, its a DoT with a graphic. So thats right folks…we are Taming a spell! haha I love it. hes so pretty!

Ooogh…why does my hunter have to be level 44…
So far I’ve seen NONE of these beasties on Eonar, and desperately want one to replace my now suddenly common Ghost Saber (seen 3 Draenei and another Blood Elf with it in the past month =O!)
Thanks for info about how to tame, now to get those last 26 lvls…
Congrats to all who got it!…. I was second on Elune’s server, and I must say thanks to my priest friend Elam and TS’s shammy who came along to help me out… You two rock!….
I did it using the skyfire metagem and switching aspects to get it to proc, the shammy’s heroism, and Elam using MC and watching for my proc.

I got mine last week on Daggerspine…he’s up to 40 now with no name as of yet and I haven’t seen any others. I just wanted to post to say yes, it can be done with just the gem ( when it procs gives you focus, halves casting time lasts 6 seconds), a priest (for shield and MC) and a shammy (for BL/Heroism). It took 3 times, the 1st time my macro targeted a dead guide and the 2nd time I am guessing my latency was too great. Great looking pet and 30-40 went quick so I hope the last patch helps take him to 70 quickly.
~serf
Just got him today, think im the first on Zangarmarsh, alliance side. I just used the gem, heroism, and a priest to MC. Got it on the second try.
WOOT! Got mine on Dragonmaw/Horde just now, took about 20 minutes of waiting around for berserking cooldown. Used the gem in an Auchindoun spirit-shard helm, Drums of Battle (leatherworker), and Xaraphyne’s macro. Started by finding a few mobs to hit at me fora few minutes to get to ~20% health so berserking is worth closer to 30% rather than 10%. Bang the drums, go aggro the Shifter, start spamming aspect changes and then the macro once the gem procs, hope the guy summons the wolf within that 5-second gem haste window. Macro hits berserking right away since the Shifter’s hitting you and therefore you have a target, just not one that’s tameable. Not a problem since berserking lasts 10sec and the gem proc is only 5sec anyway.
Now for the pain of leveling it all the way to 70. This thing is going to rock in AV ;-)
Tamed mine on Dath’Remar the week patch was released, just hit lvl69. Should have him to 70 tomorrow.
Cheers for all the info guys!
yay my wolf hit lvl70 9 hours ago =D
Terrific looking pet well worth the effort!
OK, here is a little sum-ip since I still see questions at the very end of all these comments. Maybe this could be called a guide…
Here is what you need (as a NE hunter…)
- One head item with a meta slot, this could be “Helm of Desolation” or something like that.
- More socketed blue gems than yellow gems (Attention: You CAN fit blue gems into red or yellow sockets, they won’t work, but they still do count towards the “more blue than yellow”-thingie!!!)
- A Mystical Skyfire Diamond which you should put into the meta- slot
- The Drums of Battle
—–
You will also need the help of some people:
- A leatherworker with 350+ to beat the drums
- A shammy
- A priest
—–
If you don’t have all of these things, don’t waste your time, it will probably not work!
It is strongly recommended to create a macro to target the wold and then immediately cast “tame pet”. Example:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast Tame Beast
Now, here is what you do:
First of all, clear out all mobs around the those folks in the tents, but leave them alone. They will summon the wolf for ya.
Now, you start changing your aspects until the gem procs (that will show you with some kind of aura around you and making a very distinctive noise, the proc is called “Focus”). Simultaneously, the priest should mind-control your target and get ready to summon the wolf.
Once Focus procs, the shammy needs to cast Heroism, and the priest needs to summon the wolves.
The instant the wolves appear the hunter (you) has to hit the macro (put it on a key?) and thus start taming the wolf. It will either work, or not. If all the prerequisites are in place, and you hit the macro fast enough, this WILL WORK! It’s really not hard, it’s just a question of being well-prepared.
As stated before, the wolf will die once tamed. No stress, just revive it and start feeding your new pet :)
Btw, a good place to level him is the area in Nagrand leading toward the High Path entrance to Shattrath. Just kill the Talbuks and Clefthoofs and things there. Mine is level 60 now and going strong :)
Good luck, an congrats to those beautiful pets.
C.
Argh, I forgot: Once Focus procs, the leatherworker needs to hit the drums, too! :) Don’t forget!!

Ja, that’s the well known… and totally uninformative… video. You can’t see what she’s doing, it’s pretty much just a “look-how-cool-I-am”-vid… Sad.

Got this morning on Uther Server.
Juju Potions, Meta Gem, Battle Drums, Blood Lust, and MC Priest! Woo hoo!
Seems to grab aggro too well…had to stop sending him in while levelling as he was holding
aggro on level 66 talbuks and dying! Very cool looking.

Blood Elf Level 70 Hunter
zomg I grew up on Uther… say Hi to Gypsy Cab Company for me, will ya? And congrats to the wolf ;)
If Blizz made it possible to tame this Wolf…Why not make one that isnt summon and WONT disappear after 5 bloody seconds? (Wasted an hour trying to tame one…)
Got this pet on the first try! Had a shammy and a priest, and I had the metagem.
Did trial first so we wouldn’t blow the blood lust cooldown.
Used macro:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast Tame Beast
Priest was in same room as me, and has Shammy cast Blood lust, started changing aspects, and as soon as gem proc’d, priest cast dire wolf, and I spammed the macro.. Worked first time!
Levels quick too. (At least at low levels)
Took him on a Auch Crypts run, and he gained 6 levels in 55 min run :)
Thanks for all the info here.
I got this like December 10th i level him sometimes. hes lv62 atm.

yet another post, no guide here, theres enough info, just wanted to note, non troll, hit mine first try with shammy, priest, meta, drums, macro, and juju…but did this a while back, he is now level 53… and still the only one ive seen on runtotem server. good luck all, hope they never nerf it.
I managed to solo it today with my troll hunter (Kinha, EU – Frostwhisper). I am here to thank for the ideas which helped a lot. Here is how I did it:
1. Mystical Skyfire meta gem up and working.
2. Some Grimtotem brutes in Du Marsh village hit me down to 10% life.
3. Engaged the shaman. Casting Trueshot Area to proc the gem.
4. If shaman summons wholfs and gem does not proc or it did proc but it went off, go away feign death, let wholfes die and corpses disapear. Repeat with 2. Else 5.
5. Gem proced and shaman starts summoning wholfes (his hand is up) use the following macro (put it on a hotkey) and prey:
/cleartarget
/targetexact Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/stopmacro [target=target, noexists]
/stopmacro [target=target, dead]
/cast Berserking
/stopcasting
/cast Tame Beast
Needs a lot of patience. I was also LW and had drums but I couldnt get both berserking and drums up in time to work. Berserking alone is enough.
Now I only need to level him up. :)

i just used t4 helm + the meta and spammed my aspects untill it procced.. then i said on vent “gogo” then the priest summoned the wolfs and a shammy popped his bloodlust.. i allso had the priest shield on me when i tamed it (dident help much). did it on 2 try since the 1 shammy did pop bloodlust after the wolf died =S the 2 try vent perfect.. so what did it cost? pretty much nothing sinc i had the mats for the skyfire on a bank and just 10g fee to craft it and a few azure moonstone (to make blue gems) i did not use the drumms
the meta procc last for like 6-7 secs according to ct_buffmod
macro:
/target Grimtotem Spirit Guide
/cast Tame Beast
thx to Unliving, Dansker and Bump and the nice forums that did gave me an idea how to do it

UPDATE…
Sorry to be a selfish SOB on the item, but I want to be the first to get a Ghost wolf before I tell everyone what item will help a lvl 30 get it.
I had a trusted friend run the quest and get the item..(lvl 40 NE hunter). The ghost wolf attack was in fact extended, but not enough even if we had a shammy. So I need to lvl up a new hunter to do the quest, get the item, and then get watch the AH for the cloth items that give +10 haste to range and spell, (I dont know if these will haste tame though) and try it again with a shammy.
On a side note I will add this…I think Horde can get this without a Gem.
If a toon is honored with orgm and is at the xroads when a certain quest is completed they are given a world haste buff. If a party is waiting at the spirt guide, summon the hunter who got the buff, pop of hero… this maybe enough to get the timer down into the proper range.
So a Horde hunter maybe able to get this before 66.
Got mine yesterday. Level 70 NE Hunter, Llane Server. Instructions from above worked flawless on first try using MC, Drums, Heroism and Meta Gem. I’m not the first on our server to get the ghost wolf and didn’t know anything about this pet until I saw another hunter running around with it in Shat. That’s what sparked my interest. Had a Rogue[drums], Shammy[heroism], and Priest[mind control] help me like above. We actually tried this without the Shammy first and it really did take Heroism to give me the boost I needed. Since Blizz sped up the pet leveling speed in the last patch, I got mine up 4 levels in about twenty minutes, so it shouldn’t be too bad to level him. A macro definitly helps when taming the pooch.
Technicaly, the lowest level you can have a Meta Gem equiped at is 55. This would be done with the Engineering Googles. Why 55 though? Because the Googles are BoP AND you need to have a Primal Neither to make them. The lowest level you can be to get a Primal Neither is 55 (can enter Hellfire Ramparts). Only problem then is the less than 1% change for a Primal Neither to drop. Oh, and you will still need to make up the Gem requirements to actually USE the Diamond… So, to use the Diamond, there might be enough socketed items at level 60…. that I would have to research more. So, if your super lucky, you might be able to tame this pet at 60.
I got this wolf, use the meta gem to cut cast time to 10 second, use drums and heroism to get you down to 7.1 seconds, now make a hotkey thats /target grimtotem spirit in first line and /cast Tame Beast on second line so you do not loose time targeting…now your set, have priest MC mob to time summon to occur once meta procs and shammy hits heroism at same moment, remeber to hit drums right before you start switching aspects for gem proc and boom you got a ghost wolf…
On The Scryer server, Erfing and myself(Nestarion) have tamed them. Manifest(Erfing’s pet) is 53 and growing and Destiny(Nestarion’s pet) is finally 70 as of 1/10/08. We used a combination of Mystic Skyfire metagem, Juju Flurry, Drums, a patient shaman and a mind control to help know exactly when to start the tame. Here is the link:
Picture of Destiny
Would it not be possible to do it as such; Troll Hunter intentionally loses a duel outside the Grimtotem compound. Drop freezing trap, have a Shammy pop Heroism, Troll pops Beserking (which, due to the duel loss and low HP, is 30% speed increase) and while both are up, has a Priest MC the Grimtotem and pop a wolf?
I haven’t tried this, but thinking theoretically. With the above macros, +30% haste + another +30% haste would equal 60% haste, dropping the cast time to 8 seconds. Since /target does not affect a global coldown, you should have time to do it, just barely.
May take a few tries, but should be doable about level 50 (I’m pretty sure thats the earliest Heroism works).
60% haste would not drop the cast time to 8 seconds. 100% haste would cut it in half, i.e. 10 seconds, 60% would not even come close…
I have a 70 NE hunter, but i got this beauty with a bit of effort and gold. Around 200g for the diamond, and then something like 18 spirit shards for the helm from running aunchidon instances (which btw is usable at lvl 64). Then got a LW friend, a Shadow priest and a shaman. Shadow priest would MC the mob while i spam aspects to get the gem to proc. Once gem procced LW would hit the drums and shamman popped heroism, then Shadow priest would summon wolves, i used a macro to target and tame them. 6 sec later i tame it and 2 sec after that it died. Rezed, fed, and bingo a happy hunter. Easily done at 64 providing the spirit shards.
I’ve heard some people say that they would never tame such a low level pet because it’s too much of a grind getting it to 70. Since the latest patch, leveling a lower level pet seems to be much easier. I believe someone mentioned going to serpent lake in Zangar so I started there with the fish mobs, which really works great with some breathing pots. After several runs through some lower level instances however is where I saw the biggest difference. I just put pet on submissive and let it sit back and watch. Mine is currently sitting at level 61. At this level it’s finally starting to hold it’s own in fights when soloing and feel more comfortable using misdirection on it now.
Has anyone mentioned the sound these wolves make? Very different than any other pet for sure. This whole time I’ve been playing with my sound off for different reasons. Just recently is when I discovered the difference. Definitley a ghostly sound. And as far as how it runs, I’ve seen some documentries on wolves and my personal opinion is they run more like “real” wolves than other wolves in the game.
THE WOLF HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY AND IS NO LONGER TAMEABLE: Per Drysc on 1/14/08: Through a hotfix we’ve recently removed the ability to tame a Grimtotem Spirit Guide. Players who have already gone through the trouble of taming the creature will be able to keep them unchanged. This hotfix only removes the possibility to tame this creature from here on.
The removal of the spirit guide has been debated within design discussions for a while now as to what impact the pet and its precedent has on the game.
The unintended nature of the taming, the undead status of the guide, appearance of the wolf in relation to the feel of the hunter class, and the complex processes of taming were all issues touched upon and discussed.
Ultimately the discussions brought us to the conclusion that this should not be a permanent addition to the pet selection available to hunters; however, those that have already tamed them should be allowed to keep them due to their efforts in obtaining one.
