Leveling Up a Pet: Another Useful Spot

Mugungo from Dunemaul wrote to me this week to let me know about another good spot for level 70s who are trying to bring up a low-level pet.

In Serpent Lake in Zangarmarsh there are packs of Mudfin Frenzies — vicious little fish who made my first trip out to Coilfang Reservoir fairly unpleasant. Mudfin Frenzies are level 62 to 63, which makes them green to a level 70 hunter. They come in linked packs of four.

Now each pack of four is worth the same experience as a regular level 62 or 63 creature — in other words, you have to kill the whole pack to get the same benefit as a single sporebat or other enemy. So why are these guys handy for leveling a pet?

Because each individual frenzy is really easy to kill! Pick a pack, multishot, lay down an explosive trap, and then maybe whack at each fish once and you’re done. No muss, no fuss, no serious damage to you or your pet, and no respec’ing. And the lake has billions of the darned things. You can apparently make some decent gold off their drops, too.

So when you get tired of hanging out at Firewing Point in Terokkar Forest, give these fishies a try. Just remember to bring an Elixir of Greater Water Breathing!

I found out about this a few months ago, saw another hunter doing it with a freshly tamed Ghost Saber. It didn’t even occur to me to throw out the info to everyone else. *facepalm*

Sweet! I’m going to take crab here. I hadn’t even thought of this area. He’s lvl 61 at the moment I believe (or VERY close to it).

wonderful news. I have a stabled ghost saber. feeling a bit guilty about that. also still trying to level up that poor ravager (I blame you Mania, for telling me so late about the color change … grin). In fact, I skipped those ravagers, and went for the black/purple skin once I hit 70. now he’s in the stable and the changing one is slowly grinding up - 66 now - this will be very helpful.

    thanks

Nice! Speaking of leveling up pets, I just tamed Shy-Rotam. What should I name her?

I *thought* I recognized that e-mail address! But even though you’ve written me several times with great info I didn’t put it together. Sorry about that — I really am a scatter-brain sometimes.

Another way I’ve leveled low level pets to 70 (ex: Ghostsaber or Winterspring Owl) is to take them into instances with me. I just leave them on passive, and for fights with AoE trouble I make the ’stay’ back. It puts a small dent into my DPS, but your pet can gain 1 -> 8 levels per run(depending on starting level) Just clear it with your group first, as I’ve had some people not understand a Marksman Hunter can be productive ‘without’ a pet =D

OMG, SWEET. Colbert (Shy-Rotam skin, level 62) and I have a date with some fish tonight.
Another good place I’ve found to level (once your pet is 60 or so) is in Oshu’gun, killing Voidspawns. I like to multitask, and these bad boys drop Motes of Shadow (part of the mats for the Ebon Netherscale set). They do tend to resist some of your pet’s spells, so (1) use a threat meter and (2) be prepared to draw aggro and be forced into melee. Immolation traps and plenty of water (for Mend Pet) and bandages (for you and your pet) come in handy.

Man. Wish I had known about this earlier! I leveled Humar from lv43 on the Laughing Skull Ogres in Nagrand!

Oh well. I made Exhalted with Mag’har and “Skywise” is now 70, so all is good. :)

That’s interesting! I’ll have to try that out later. Too bad I already leveled my Springpaw Cub to level 61 on the ravagers on the border of Hellfire and Zangarmarsh. Then again, being a skinner netted me with a nice income from the AH. =P

as a marks hunter with LW, if i grind something, it will probably be something i can skin. that said i forgot to take a pet out of stables after dismissing one and went to farm the clefthoofs in nagrand for their clefthoof meat for the cooking daily. i was easily able to kill packs of them no problem without my pet. lay a frost trap down between you and it, aimed, arcane, auto, steady, auto, run til it hits trap, if its still alive i auto once and its dead. farmed a whole stack of the meat today without a pet, heh.

Hey guys, another great spot is sunspring village in Nagrand. The Murkblood scavangers go down with a single multi shot, and the Putrifiers will sometimes stand there and feebly try get off a spell.
