Really Simple Fancy Item Link Tooltips via Thotbott

I’d been resisting adding some sort of script to do fancy item links (like this) to this blog. I don’t link to that many items — not like some people! — and anyway it seemed like a lot of work.

But Thotbott recently added a nice feature for bloggers who want to have their fancy links without a lot of hassle. Just insert a small line of script somewhere in your HTML (mine is in my included header file) and voila! Fancy item links. There’s also a Thotbott search field you can insert into your page and a couple of other goodies as well. One thing I really like about this method: If I decide not to use the fancy tooltips, I can just remove the script call and all my links continue to function as normal.

Now, I know a lot of you prefer Wowhead or other database sites, but I’m partial to Thotbott. I like the color; I like the layout; I like the fact that there is a lot of history in many of the comment threads. There are a few areas where I’d like to see more — for instance, help finding reputation quests — but then other sites have their own missing information. It’s not easy keeping even a small niche site up to date — I can just imagine how hard keeping a site on the whole shebang must be.

At any rate, for now I have cool fancy item link tooltips without any sort of hassle — so I’m happy!

  1. Ooh. Shiny.

I swapped to using Wowhead for information because Thottbot seemed to be running super-slow when I alt-tabbed to it from within WoW, and Wowhead wasn’t.

Too be honest though, I tend to check both for information, and I like Thottbot more now that I have it set to a black background.
