PTR 2.3.0: No Melee Range Change, Says Hortus

Hunters’ ranged combat distance changed recently on the 2.3 Public Test Realm, reducing the dead zone in which we cannot attack with either melee or ranged attacks. About the same time there were many reports that the distance for melee combat had changed as well. But Hortus posted today on the PTR forum that:

There was no change to normal melee range. This has been verified internally and independently by players on the PTR. I’m sure if you search you can find some threads with excellent screenshots.

There is a bug involving abilities with 8 yard minimum range, and it is being looked at.

Other posters in the thread suggest that some of the confusion may be coming from the way distance is measured differently with ranged and melee attacks. Unfortunately I haven’t been testing this myself, but I am anxious to hear what other players have discovered.

Kaet: The Post-Brewfest Blues

Kaet in her Flimsy Female Dwarf Mask.

I haven’t played Kaet — I mean really played Kaet — since before Brewfest started. I logged her in more or less daily for about a week to get some Brewfest tickets, but my heart wasn’t really in it. At the same time, though, I might at any moment have decided that she really needed a Brewfest hat or a pony keg, so I couldn’t really take her anywhere else either.

And then Brewfest ended and I felt a strong desire to really play (instead of just logging in to run rams around), but I was out of the habit of Kaet. Even though I’d been enjoying the character, even though I knew exactly where she was and what she was doing, I felt diconnected from her — I wanted something new.

PTR 2.3.0: New Obsidian Raptor

An angry obsidian raptor!

Greengorilla, a Horde hunter from Blackhand, wrote today to share some more very good news from the Public Test Realms. Seems he was exploring the new and improved Dustwallow Marsh and ran across a new tameable raptor — and not just any raptor, but one with an appearance we haven’t been able to tame before!

Goreclaw the Ravenous has the same look as the (untameable) Venomhide Ravasaur from Un’Goro. Goreclaw is level 39 and neither rare nor elite. You can find him in Bloodfen Burrow, a small one-room cave just northwest of the new goblin town of Mudsprocket in Dustwallow Marsh.

Thanks, Greengorilla, for sharing this great find! And thanks to Blizzard for finally letting us tame this gorgeous raptor.

PTR 2.3.0: No More Dead Zone!

The Public Test Realm updated today, and although I don’t see any difference in the patch notes there are some clear differences in functionality.

First off, guild banks are now in and seem fully operational. There are some cool bits there — the guild master can give each tab of the bank a different icon and name, for example. The only thing I don’t like is that there’s only one pool of money — you can’t allow some guild members access to the petty cash but reserve the deep pockets for the officers.

More exciting to most hunters, however, is the dead zone — or rather, the lack of a dead zone. I honestly didn’t expect this change to make it in so soon, but as of today on the PTR the base range (that is, with no talents) for ranged attacks is now 4-35 yards. Now I thought that melee range started at 5 yards, which would mean that I should never be up close and unable to attack again, but in testing I was able to get myself into a range where neither bow nor sword would work. But this was a pretty narrow range — a step in either direction and I was attacking again.

Unfortunately for you knife-throwers out there, it looks like the range on thrown weapons remains 8-30 yards for now.

PTR 2.3.0: Reported Issues

Like all PTR testing, the current PTR has some … problems. But Hortus has been kind enough to post a list of the issues that Blizzard is currently looking into.

The big one, which was also brought to our attention in a comment from Celeglad: Hunter pets are lost when stabled.

(I didn’t actually lose my stabled pets, but they did duplicate very oddly and then disappear temporarily.)

Those wacky Test Realms!
