PTR 2.3.0: No Melee Range Change, Says Hortus

Hunters’ ranged combat distance changed recently on the 2.3 Public Test Realm, reducing the dead zone in which we cannot attack with either melee or ranged attacks. About the same time there were many reports that the distance for melee combat had changed as well. But Hortus posted today on the PTR forum that:

There was no change to normal melee range. This has been verified internally and independently by players on the PTR. I’m sure if you search you can find some threads with excellent screenshots.

There is a bug involving abilities with 8 yard minimum range, and it is being looked at.

Other posters in the thread suggest that some of the confusion may be coming from the way distance is measured differently with ranged and melee attacks. Unfortunately I haven’t been testing this myself, but I am anxious to hear what other players have discovered.

I did some very quick testing on this, and it works pretty much like you’d expect 4-35 yards would have worked. I switched smoothly from ranged to melee attacks when I was in melee range; there was never a time when I couldn’t attack one way or the other; and I was not able to use ranged attacks at point blank range. The tooltip is a little odd, but this is basically the behavior I was hoping for when Blizzard first mentioned reducing the dead zone.

@Bera: “1-35yards??? lol, it is impossible”… Really? And throwing lightning bolts, frostbolts or fireballs with your hands is something actually “possible”? :)

I’ve not been a “OMG: get rid of deadzone”, but I’ve found it hard to maneuver in some instances (as low as Deadmines or Stockades): you have to be so far away from your pet that you aggro a few more trying to get in range! So I more than welcome this new “impossibility”! :)

I’ve been hearing from my friends that they think the accuracy of hunter ranged attacks should scale with the distance that the target is from the hunter.
I’ve only been playing for about 8 months now so I’m not intimately familiar with the mechanics of all the actions but I thought that the accuracy does drop off with distance?
Seems to me in my normal gameplay that if I miss it is at the far end of the shot ranges…

Rusk (n TKA Something) posted a Blue post (http://forums.tkasomething.com/showthread.php?t=10636) stating the tool tip is wrong and that the range is not and will never be 1 yrd.

well now having some characters on the test realm all i can say is i love that ranged attacking buff , i only hope they are fair in this and do not only do it to hunters ? any class that can use a gun or bow should have this deadzone removed , and as i have not heard that they have done this then i can see there will be a lot of screaming about hunters being the favoured class now

i always hated buildings and caves as in some places the only thing i could do is melee and as a hunter is so limited in that it was not fun , hehe now it is though

today i started a level 1 draenei hunter off , and all i can say is the changes are making the game a lot more fun for me , i can jump back and most times get another shot off instead of that slow melee that hunters have that does so little damage ? also i got to level 10 1/2 and decided to train the n.e. boar . first was the thistle boar to get the charge and gore then i tamed the level 2 young thistle boar and went off killing and doing a few quests in the n.e. lands to my surprise the boar levels rose like a rocket and as i hit level 11 the boar hit level 10 ,seems if the pet can catch up 8 levels to my 1/2 a level they have done a great job in pet levelling , is this one of the things they added to the test patch ? or is it just i am still a low level ? can any higher level hunters confirm that pets are levelling faster ?

Unfortunately I believe that it was just because you were very low level. I started a NE hunter on a live realm last weekend. I choose a level 1 Young Thistle Boar as my first pet, and just as you describe he hit level 10 just about the time I hit level 11.
